record winter is back for more tonight. harvey has what you can expect. meteorologist: judea cohen is an expert in forecasting seasons. and new boston -- knew boston would get blasted last winter, in spite of the slow start. check out these numbers. only 5 1/2 inches fell until late january. but after that, a wicked winter shift that left boston with a record 110 inches of snow. >> it will be hard to repeat anything close to last year. reporter: but cohen's model suggests mother nature might at least try. inches. it's above average. reporter: and cribblingts what long-term forecasters are predicting. their models rely heavily on a significant el anyoneow, growing stronger right now in the pacific. that phenomenon generally leads to milder, wetter winters. united states. >> it's the strongest el anyoneow since 1997 -- el nino since 1997-1998. reporter: he also uses snow
11:17 pm
month of october to help figure out our winter forecast. >> this past october the snow cover was above normal so that means typically a colder and snowier winter here. reporter: that snow cover generate acadome of cold, dense air over the arctic. as the pressure builds, the dome pushes the polar vortex south. forcing cold air into the united states. even bending the jet stream. >> that's what happened last year. i think to some degree that will happen again this year. reporter: but cohen's model still shows slightly above average temperatures in boston this winter. putting us right back in the battle zone. >> we didn't have such a big el anyone yo, ilede be more confident about a cold and snowy winter. [laughter] heather: that was some of the fun, the kids had fun with it last year. we don't want to see that 110 inches of snow again. meteorologist: i understand that. it's really a tough forecast because you have two conflicting things. if you go by the snow cover in siberia, we could be in trouble
11:18 pm
but a large el nino like this sometimes means it's so mild that you can't get as much. absurd. that's not going happen again. meteorologist: right. statistically it's unlikely. by the way, ed, until january 23 last winter kept telling me, he would we're not going to have any winter. ed: i was right until then. meteorologist: let's shift gears. something beautiful in the skies tonight. the full beaver moon. there it is. it's going to be technically full coming up tomorrow. but nice clear skies tonight, so kind of lighting up the countryside on a cold night across new england. this is another cold night. last night was certainly cold. early this morning, lunaberg was 17. natick was 16. it's almost as cold again tonight. one of the things the cold weather has done has allowed snow making. there's a look at westford. a sign of things to come, of course. eventually. but this month, last four days,
11:19 pm
below average. but overall the month, because it's been such a warm month the first half, is still running four degrees warmer than normal. boston tonight is chilly. but not like some of the outlying areas. 38 degrees, gentle west breeze. wind is virtually calm elsewhere. temperatures in the 20's, even upper teens. low 20's on the vineyard. you know you have another cold start tomorrow. tomorrow afternoon's temperatures will be up a couple of notches from what they were today. and there will still be a fair. a sunshine. not too tough to take day. these were the high temperatures today. look at kansas city. look at memphis, tennessee. ours on friday. and thanksgiving day will be direction. so overnight tomorrow night, going into thanksgiving morning, will not be nearly as cold as tonight is. or last night was. that's good news for the football games. it won't be that cold for the games. look at thanksgiving afternoon. this is even late morning. so you can see how it's going to be 50's lunch time and the afternoon hours.
11:20 pm
time around for us. boston's temperature trend, as i see it over the next four days, shows you that warmth and then back to average temperatures by the time we get to saturday. not much in the way of cloudiness around our area and if you want storminess around the country or if you're looking to where it is, it's well to the west of this point in terms of snow. eventually some showers are going to move toward the middle of the country by tomorrow. for us, a fair amount of sun coming up for your day tomorrow. some patchy low clouds as the winds start shifting out of the south and we'll see some of that cloudiness around for part of thanksgiving day. even if there is cloudiness in your location for even a fair part of the day, it's still going to become very mild. and even warmer on friday before a front approaches friday night. that's when a band of showers may move through from northwest to southeast and then behind it we clear for the actual traditional weekend days of saturday and sunday, with seasonal temperatures and clouds come back early next week, eventually some wet weather. but it looks like it will be mild. if you're wonder being tomorrow
11:21 pm
going to get about, middle of the country had showers but the snow is pushed farther to the west and for the football games, another little review for you. about 40's for the start of the game, 50's at the end, and 40's back in the evening and shopping, which will commence midnight of thanksgiving night into friday morning, in the 40's as you can see. there you go. only some showers are likely on friday night. otherwise it's a dry forecast dales. we'll see how that works out. out. ed: what's the name of this moon? meteorologist: beaver. ed: because what? winter? meteorologist: come on. use your imagination. that. ed: there is a new "dancing with the stars" champion. heather: coming up, what the new champ is saying tonight p it's called a rigged economy, and this is how it works. z most new wealth flows to the top 1%. it's a system held in place by corrupt politics r where wall street banks
