128, interstate 95. lots of other roads are backing up pumper to miles. the crash that triggered this string of headlines and olessa has what you need to know before hitting the roads. i'm randy price. thank you for joining us. erika: i'm erika tarantal. emily is off today. another cold start, cold but dry. a lot of people will be getting last minute things done, traveling and running around. no weather worries so that's a good thing. had to do some scraping this morning. there is frost out there. look at the temperatures again. cindy: it's a cold morningnd teens in the suburbs and down to 17 in orange and yesterday we were down to 13. 19 in bedford. boston slipped below the freezing mark. south of the city, teens in norwood to totten and lower 20's for you on the cape this morning. it's definitely another cold start. you see how clear the skies are. once again, high pressure in control. it's sitting right on top of us this morning and it will get just an ever so slight nudge to

the east today and that will turn our wind around to the southeast as we get to the afternoon. the temperatures will come up a few more degrees and good amount of sunshine at sun rise at 6:47. and we're holding at a freezing mark but into the low to mid 40's. midday temperature of about 44 degrees. topping out around 45 today, boston. some upper 40's on the south shore of the cape. nashua, your high of 45 degrees. no problems on the roads or in fact airport delays right now, not a factor at all across the northeast. if you're getting ready to head somewhere else across the country, it's pretty quiet overall with no weather delays to speak of at the present time. let's get to you the roads to see how we're looking out there. olessa: so far in great shape. eastbound moving to the top of the screen. let's get to the maps and check the rest of the ride. so far no complaints. heading into boston, you're good to go and no construction to worry about. quiet start on route 9 which is

wide open and so far so good on your trip from new hampshire and trains and buses starting on schedule. randy? randy: breaking overnight, hundreds of protesters making their voices heard in chicago, swarming roads and blocking a freeway. these people are outraged by newly released video of a white police officer officer shooting a black teenager 16 times. that officer has been charged with first-degree murder for the 2014 death of laquan mcdonald. erika: this is dash cam video of that night. mcdonald walking in the middle of the street with a knife in his right hand. as he walking away from the police two approach him with guns drawn. one of them, jason van dyke fires but mcdonald was shot six times in 15 seconds. >> of the eight or more officers on the scene, it was only the defendant who fired his weapon. erika: a hearing will be held monday to determine if van dyke should be released on bail. the city paid mcdonald's family $5 million in a settlement.

randy: we're getting new details about a new terror alert as people across the country prepare to travel for thanksgiving. todd kazakiewich is live with a message this morning. todd: good morning from terminal a. you look behind me the line for t.s.a. security screening has already started forming and was here since we got here at 4:30 this morning and there are even more people here now. obviously it's going to be a long day. patient. with regards to terrorism, we're talking about copycats and people looking to cause the same terror on u.s. soil that terrorists saw a few weeks ago. a new warning calls for increased security at so-called soft targets and includes airports, malls and transportation hubs like washington's union station. >> over here we have one of our detection k-9's and up there are special agents with

todd: law enforcement tells abc news while there is no specific threat, the u.s. is watching a group of isis followers. coming up we'll talk to the t.s.a. workers and tell what you to expect either today or the holiday weekend. reporting inside, todd kazakiewich, newscenter 5. erika: drivers know all it takes is one crash in the wrong miles. this nightmare had traffic at a virtual stand still for hours yesterday, even the back road were clogged when drivers tried to get off the highway and started with this box truck accident on the northbound side, shutting down three lanes. the river effect was felt from wellesley to braintree. >> thanksgiving is stressful enough for people and then you add this. erika: state police are expecting another heavy travel day today so plan accordingly.

a freak incident that's deadly, a car flying out of control and hitting shoppers. we are in natick this morning on what we learned about this crash with antoinette. antoinette: it happened at the shopping center in colorleaf and it went airborne and hit the tool shop. this morning one man is dead and two others injured. we've learned a woman in her late 80's somehow lost control of her vehicle, hitting those three men as they walked out of the harbor friday tools store. two were customers in their 70's and another was an armored truck driver in his 40's. was killed. witnesses recall a horrific scene. >> she went airborne so when she hit the curb you could hear an accident sound and when we all came running out of the building and bang, bang, bang, one on top of the other.

that driver suffered minor injuries and was feegged erratically but no word on what caused her to drive in the martin luther king. antoinette antonio, newscenter 5. randy: the founder after paxton animal shelter destroyed in a deadly fire for many animals says he will rebuild. richard clarke tells us the new building will be sturdier and more cutting edge than the building that burned saturday night. dozens of cats and dogs were killed in that fire. a gofundme webpage has raised more than $100,000. erika: governor charlie baker signed a bill into law criminalizing fentanyl trafficking, drug trafficking already is illegal but yesterday's bill makes the crime punishable for up to 20 years in prison those who traffic more than 10 grams of fentanyl could face that pun yib. -- punishment. the drug is accused of many

bring in shower activity towards the midwest, chicago, and back into the denver area, looks like they'll get into snow as we head toward thanksgiving morning. during the day on thanksgiving the system taps in more moisture from the gulf of mexico and notice how it's used up more with rain around chicago and snow on the other side of the front towards minneapolis but all the while look at the eastern seaboard. it's dry and we'll see a bit of a warm-up coming as well. the temperatures now are chilly out the door. we're below freezing in boston and 30 in worcester. on the cape we have readings in the lower 20's, 19 in totten and norwood 18 and in the merrimack valley, we have sunshine in the forecast as the temperatures come up. look at lunchtime we're in the lower 40's with mostly sunny skies. again today, we have mainly clear start and you can see the absence of any cloud cover across southern new england. high pressure is in control and

today and allow our wind to turn to the southeast and means a little milder for you here in southeastern massachusetts in the upper 40's, about 45 boston and 43 in worcester. overnight we'll bring in more clouds as the winds go southerly. you see it here. as we get into thanksgiving day, there will be a period of cloud cover in the morning hours and the clouds blanket us and overnight low temperatures tonight, upper 30's boston and the coldest suburbs in the upper 20's and not as chilly and a milder flow of air throughout the next system and your thanksgiving may start out with cloud cover in the morning hours but the skies brighten in the afternoon as we come out of the 40's for the football games into the 50's midday and get even warmer here on friday with temperatures near 60 degrees and friday night we'll watch this frontal boundary finally approach. a narrow ribbon of showers. not expecting a lot of rain and will come through mostly in the overnight hours and early saturday morning and then dry

take that would trick the thieves into thinks you're still there. first, call the post office putting a hold on your mail can prevent a telltale pileup at the front door. second, make sure the trash gets out even if the bins are empty, enlist a neighbor to cart them out on trash and recycling day. finally, plan for the weather and get a friend to shovel your walk if a little snow shows up. you don't want any red flags. erika: to the economy now. asian stocks mostly lower after the downing of a russian warplane rattled nerves but u.s. stock futures higher as investors await the report of jobless claims and the dow made up for lost ground ending 20 points higher. today two fantasy sports sites will fight to stay in business in new york. at a court hearing fanduel and draftkings will argue they're legal. new york's attorney general want to shut the sites down immediately calling them illegal gambling operations. an expert tells "the herald" it

battle with appeals. e. coli being linked to chicken salad bought at costco. 19 people in seven states have gotten sick. massachusetts not on the list. people who bought chicken salad at any u.s. costco store on or before friday are being told to throw it out. experts are still looking at the cause of this outbreak. randy: well, of course last winter's record-setting snow and cold was brutal for all of us. might be wondering what's in store for this year? cindy is back with a new prediction. cindy: our chief meteorologist harvey leonard sat down with the winter weather guru and asked him what we can expect. judah cohen is his name and he's an expert at forecasting the seasons. he predicted boston would get blasted last winter despite the slow start we had. this winter, there is a very strong el nino that is heating up the pacific ocean and sending warm, moist air into the united states. cohen's model suggests that system will battle a cold

siberian air mass over the arctic. cohen uses snow cover in siberia in the month of october as a significant factor in his forecast. judah: this past october the snow cover was below norpe. i would be more confident about a cold and snowy winter but expect more than a winter snow than last year. cindy: it will be hard to repeat anything close to the record numbers from last winter but his model predicts we'll see above average snowfall, around 62 inches and just to give you some perspective, last year we had 110.6. eamp is about 43 him -- average is about 4. randy: 44 would be all right. we'll find out but it's a great prediction. thank you. cindy: thanks, guys. erika: marty walsh says the city has a new snow removal plan. this year the city will use massive snow blowers instead of the plows. the plows push the snow to street corners, the snow

blowers will fill dump trucks to haul away the snow. the city owns two such pieces of equipment but will have to rent more at an hourly rate. randy: a facial hair trend and fast food favorite gets a transformation. erika: both ahead in eye poppers and then terrifying moments for a boston teen when a man breaks into the house. how her mom, who was not home, came to her rescue. randy: searching for this man on the run.

was released showing a shooting of a black teenager by a white police officer. a handful of arrests there. this is some of the video. laquan mcdonnell was shot 16 times. he had a knife but it shows him walking away from the officers. jason van dyke was charged with first-degree murder. erika: one is dead and two others hurt as a driver crashes into them as they walked out of a store in natick. witnesses say the car went airborne as it jumped the curb outside harbor freight tools. no charges have been filed. right now the holiday travel crush is shifting into high gear amid high security. randy: todd kazakiewich is in the boston airport talking to the t.s.a. about security this year. todd: randy and erika, good morning inside terminal a. looking behind me you see the line for the t.s.a. security checkpoint is quite long and has been since we got here at 4:30 this morning.

the wait times vary but it is here. as you look at the video from inside here, logan airport this morning, you see it's been busy all morning, like i said, just since we arrived at 4:30 this morning. t.s.a. said it likely will be the busiest thanksgiving day -- the day before thanksgiving, the busiest since t.s.a.'s inception and goes back to 9/11 to give you an idea how many people are traveling. here at logan airport, they're expecting about 60,000 people to go to the security checkpoints today alone. we talked to a t.s.a. spokesman on what to expect and how to prepare. here's what he had to say. take a listen. >> it's a partnership. you show up and you're a traveler and ready with your boarding pass out and make sure you don't have any items in your luggage and whip help you get through quicker and everyone else behind you get out quicker. todd: it bears repeating, come

to the airport early. obviously there are very long lines. it's not just today. this entire travel period really got going last friday and continues through sunday and here at logan airport alone, they estimate about 460,000 passengers will go through the security checkpoint over that period from last friday to this coming sunday. so we'll keep you posted throughout the morning. obviously a very busy day at logan airport. reporting live. randy: police are searching for a man accused of murdering a woman whose body was found in bridgewater. retaliation drove fernando owens to murder 29-year-old ashley bortner and her burned body was found along the train tracks three weeks ago. investigators believe owens' son was shot to death in dorchester and owens thought the woman had something to do with that and is believed to be armed and dangerous. family member of a baby killed in alexandria, new hampshire, think an arrest is coming soon. 11-month-old shawn sylvester

died earlier this month of blunt force head trauma. his family tells the union lead ter happened at the home shared by the boy's mother and her boyfriend. the assistant attorney general is not suggesting where it happened and the child's mother charged in a pornography case. erika: a teen is safe after hiding in her home as a man broke in. >> i thought he looked up and i went back down. erika: the burglar never saw haleigh morris and hid in the bathroom and called 911, shaking, scared and alone. >> the police are there. stay where you are. haleigh: he walked past the bathroom twice and thought he would come in. erika: her mother called and

set off the alarm remotely when she couldn't get through. the burglar ran into the bushes and was caught and is held on $70,000 bail. new hampshire state police say they caught this man driving 109 miles per hour yesterday. they were monitoring traffic in canterbury when they clocked joshua lessard at breakneck speed and was caught passing cars in the right and left lanes and is charged with court next year. randy: 5:37. schedule changes. the t is hitting the brakes after complaints by viewers. the riders feel blindsided by the proposed changes outlined last week and were to go in effect december 14. the proposed schedule included cuts on heavily used trains and stops during rush hour. the t says it will work with riders and hopes to have a new schedule in place by the spring. erika: 5:37. we knew this. massachusetts topping the list of best states to live. randy: the factors giving us

travel. randy: todd kazakiewich is at the airport with a message for travelers this morning. todd: randy and erika, good morning. security is obviously the top of mind for a lot of people here. live inside terminal a this morning. it's been busy this morning and will be a very busy day, 60,000 people expected to pass through the security checkpoint here. the lines are long and the wait times are long so you have to get here early. we talked to the t.s.a. spokesperson, mike mccarthy, about what you should know before you fly. mike: this will be one of the busiest travel days we've seen since t.s.a.'s inception. we're fully staffed and ready for the busy holiday season and trying to get the word out and remind passengers to arrive early and arrive prepared. todd: arriving prepared means making sure there's no banned items in your luggage and making sure your i.d. and boarding pass are handy. t.s.a. and state police say

late 80's somehow lost control of her vehicle, hitting those three men as they walked out of the harbor freight tool store here at the cloverleaf shopping center. two were customers in their 70's and the other pan was an armored truck driver in his 40's. police have not said which one of them was killed. the driver suffered minor injuries. still no word this morning on what exactly caused her to lose control. we're live in natick this morning. antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: thank you, antoinette. drivers are certainly hoping nothing like this will happen today. this is a box truck crash on 128 at route 9, had traffic at a virtual stand still for hours yesterday. even the back roads were clogged when drivers tried to get off the highway altogether. three lanes of the northbound side is shut down and the ripple effect felt at wellesley and newton, all the way to braintree it. erika: they are urging you not
