courtroom. todd kazakiewich is at danvers high school, where jurors will visit today. todd: good morning. this is where chism is accused of murdering his math teacher, colleen ritzer, before dragging her body to the woods. today' s view follows the first day of presentation by the defense, which claims chism suffered from an undiagnosed mental illness at the time of the murder. chism' s testified on how the dramatic change in the defendant' s behavior. >> i knew him as a very excited person, very outgoing, getting to know us. and then he just got quiet and change completely. todd: chism' s grandfather also took the stand in a day filled with emotional testimony. he explained that the teen' s grandmother and aunt both suffer from mental illness.

high school will have a half day of classes to accommodate the jury view. they will go into the bathroom where she was murdered. live in danvers, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: thank you. right now firefighters are trying to determine what caused this large fire at a historic home in exeter, new hampshire. these flames broke out around 6:00 last night on oak street. we' re told this home is 150 years old. the family who lived here was able to escape unharmed. a firefighter was injured after cutting his hand on a piece of glass. it' s believed the fire started in the back of the home where there is the most damage. >> they got him. emily: a family demanding justice after a vietnam vet is gunned down and robbed. police in new bedford arresting two teenagers in his murder. police say donald depina was shot execution-style saturday night after giving the pair a ride in his cab. police were able to track down the 18- and 16-year-old with a

prosecutors say the 66-year-old vietnam vet gave them a ride to a local park even though they did not have enough money to cover the fare. his family not surprised by his generosity. >> it is unbelievable what they did to him. if they were trying to rob him, they could' ve asked him for the money and he probably would have gave it to them. emily: depina' s wallet was stolen after the murder. one of the suspects, alexander mills, allegedly tried to use the vet' s credit cards at several local businesses. randy: right now, a new task for former massachusetts governor deval patrick. the announcement coming less than 24 hours after new fallout in the shooting death of a chicago teenager at the hands of police. the eyeopener' s erika tarantal is here with the job taking him to his hometown. erika: patrick has been tapped to advise a five-member panel looking into the department' s actions following the shooting of laquan mcdonald. the teenager was killed last

i will be going hard at rehab. antoinette: this injury sunday apparently looked at lot worse than it actually is. gronk suffering from a bad knee bruise as well as a knee sprain. the pats take on the eagles here at gillette on sunday. we are in foxborough this morning. antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: thank you. 5 on the opioid crisis. troubling new numbers out of new hampshire this morning. the eye' s erika tarantal is here with the end of the year statistics with a month still to go. erika: the numbers are grim. new hampshire is expected to set a record for drug deaths this year. there have been 295 opioid related deaths in 2015. that number is expected to hit more than 350 by year' s end. 183 of those overdoses involved fetanyl. there were 326 last year. despite efforts to save lives with narcan training, the

>> the disturbing part is the amount of narcan we have to give is increasing. it is becoming more pure. erika: the numbers are high and there are still 80 suspected drug overdoses that are pending toxicology results. randy? randy: thank you. a wareham man is charged with driving drunk during this violent crash. 36-year-old mark giberson is accused of hitting a parked car, and then a man standing in a parking lot off onset ave. the victim at a boston hospital with serious injuries. giberson was arrested at the scene. wareham police tell us that he was driving with a suspended license. more charges are pending. emily: a man is suing a local catholic school claiming he was denied employment because he' s gay. matt barrett was hired to run food services at fontbonne academy in milton. but when he filled out his paper work, that job offer was rescinded.

emily: workers will hold a rally today at walmart in quincy in their push for change at the superstore. the protest is part of a national grassroots called "are you with us?" employees and supporters want to highlight what they call the negative impact of walmart on american workers, including low pay and insufficient benefits. randy: harvard university administrators are changing the title of so-called "house masters" amid racial concerns from some students. some students claim the term is associated with slave owners. the masters of harvard' s 12 undergraduate houses have now unanimously agreed to change their titles. administrators will soon meet to select a different name. buyer beware. police are searching for a package thief in pawtucket, rhode island. this is security from a home that shows this person stealing police say if you' re going to order items, especially this time of year, make sure someone is home, or have them ship to a more secure location. emily: sky 5 over bedford, new hampshire, where firefighters from a dozen communities tried

everyone made it out safely, but that home is a total loss. could be seen for miles. investigators say it started in the attic, and may have been burning for some time before anyone noticed. a warning for drivers. kentucky shows a deer running into the path of a police cruiser. police say the officer did the right thing, applying his brakes and steering away from the deer in a controlled manner. you can see the deer runs back into the woods. the officer was not hurt. randy: a kentucky woman says a hair tie caused an infection on her wrist. audree kopp says she noticed a small, red lump on her wrist and thought it was a bug bite. she went to the hospital when it continued to grow. she says doctors told her it was an infection caused from bacteria in her hair elastic. kopp wants to warn other women to be careful when keeping hair elastics on their wrist. emily: the 76ers make history on the court. but not in a good way. they won their first game of the
