can bring out the worst in some people. you've got your gifters, black friday ball friday brawlers. but none of that compares to the people we're about to show you. they're called porch pirates. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: it's the most wonderful time of the year, but for some, the holiday cheer is being snatched by grinches lurking nearby. across the country, police are working to thwart those scrooges, thieves who swipe packages right off front porches. >> we're in a local neighborhood here. city of rancho kor dovea. >> reporter: they go undercover and drop off a bait package to catch suspected thieves. >> this is a problem. thieves prey, they follow around delivery trucks. they wait for them to leave. and then they steal the precious packages. >> reporter: their crime suppression unit has implemented

this package actually contains a tiny gps unit. >> the gps tracking device would not be identifiable to the thief. >> reporter: the unit's officers go undercover dressed as deliverymen working with area residents and businesses to track down the potential thief, and if the package is picked up -- >> we pull up the device on the computer screen. as soon as it moves, we can determine what direction it's going and where it's going. >> reporter: a whopping 10% of americans say they've been a victim of package theft. more and more of those sticky-fingered thieves are caught on security cameras by savvy homeowners. this season, over 1.4 billion packages will be shipped, a 10% increase from last year. just last week, a man drove up to this california home, taking a package, and putting it in his car, and then stealing two oranges right off the tree. and last month, this pair backed

driving away. and who can forget this grinch from last year. caught on camera in west virginia. peeking in the door, trying the handle, and casually taking holiday packages right off ryan and marty root's door steps. what was in the packages? >> a soccer ball and some plastic cars. >> so your kids' christmas gifts? >> correct. >> that is low down. >> reporter: she doesn't stop at the toys. she actually swiped the wreath. right off the front door. >> the lady took your wreath. that is crazy. who takes a breathe? >> it's funny now. but i could have killed her. >> reporter: ryan coupled the power of surveillance cameras with social media to take down this unlikely scrooge. >> this is the second camera. >> reporter: thanks to the high-tech security camera which includes four cameras around his house, ryan was able to go right to the videotape. >> here it is.

expecting to see a guy here. you see a female obviously. driveway. puts the packages in the trunk of her bmw. >> reporter: that's right, the getaway car, a beamer. >> you don't expect someone to drive up with a bmw. >> well-dressed, older later. i was thinking, she just had her highlights done. >> reporter: he showed it off to a wider audience. >> i knew if i put it on facebook, someone would know who it was. i put it on tuesday morning. by tuesday night we basically had her. >> how many views did you get that day? >> around a half a million. >> wow! >> in one day. >> reporter: ryan root and his family were out of town for thanksgiving. the story got so much attention online and local media, within 24 hours the 63-year-old deborah davis turned herself into police. >> she comes down and talks to us and said it was a prank, but got the wrong house. >> reporter: police quickly

they found something else out, too. >> she also went outside around the house and said she urinated in the bushes. she said that she needed to use the restroom and was trying to get in the house for that purpose. >> that explains why she tried the handle both in the front and the back? >> that's what she said. >> reporter: deborah davis pled guilty to attempted burglary. and just this past september was sentenced to two years supervised probation and 52 days community service. she ended up becoming probably the most infamous suspect in all of west virginia. >> yes. people called her the grinch. >> reporter: we wanted to know davis. i can hear you talking to the dogs behind the door. why did you take those packages?
