juli: that' s right. an mbta official said he heard an emergency call over the radio at the -- this morning. a a train packed with writers taking off on its own -- a train packed with riders taking off on its own. mbta officials are trying to figure out how a red line train carrying passengers traveled multiple stops without an operator. an operator stepped off the inbound train just after 6:00 in braintree to check a problem. the train kept moving, hitting him, and continue to travel four stops -- travel four stops before mbta personnel howard the -- stopped the train.

no passengers were hurt and the operator was treated for minor injuries. the mbta general manager is incident. he released a statement this morning saying that passenger safety is their highest priority. wcvb newscenter 5. emily: thank governor baker is saying believes that train was tampered with. frank holland is live at the jfk-umass station. frank: the cause of that runaway train is under investigation by t police. the fbi has also been notified. governor baker is confirming that the runaway train was tampered with, but not providing any other details right now. fortunately, all the passengers were able to get off here safely . this is a live look at that

we expect investigators to take an especially close look at the entire train and a safety device within the cap. that might have been the with. no specific details about the nature of the tampering, but governor baker says it appears whoever was responsible had and how it works. cooperating with law in the investigation. they are currently interviewing several people, including the gentleman who was the operator of the train. the most important thing, from my point of view, is the investigation is ongoing. nobody was hurt, thankfully. this train was tampered with and by someone who knew what they were doing. frank: back live, this investigation is ongoing. the operator of the train is now being treated at a south shore

todd is life outside city hall with the numbers and the reaction from city hall. todd: the threat is hypodermic needles being found all over the city, including right here at city hall plaza. the city lost a team in may known as the mobile sharps team to pick up the needles. 7000 syringes have been picked up since then. over 500 of those needles were found by residents who then reported via the citizen hotline or the app. nearly every neighborhood is affected. citizens found 98 needles and roxbury. 77, downtown. 68, dorchester. 60 in the south end. we spoke with mayor walsh about the heroin epidemic. mayor walsh: we are looking about -- into how we are going to combat this addiction issue.

the damage is estimated in the millions of dollars. governor charlie baker is about to speak on the runaway red line train. let' s listen in. governor baker: as many people know, there was a train that left braintree that was unmanned this morning. it passed through four stations and stopped. the passengers were let off. thankfully, nobody was hurt. the train, it was determined that it was unmanned traveling from braintree -- within a couple of minutes after it left, the power on the third rail was shut off, but the train coasted because it had momentum at that point through several stations before it came to a stop. inspection of the train determined that some of the controls had been manipulated. there is an ongoing investigation right now that involves folks from the mbta,

from what we can tell at this point, it appears to be an isolated incident. >> governor, is the fbi involved in the investigation? governor baker: to my knowledge, they are not involved at this point. >> you said it was tampered with? governor baker: manipulated, tampered with. it is pretty clear that it was set in forward motion, which is why it moved in the first place when the signal was manipulated. as i said, within a couple minutes of it leaving, the third rail was turned off and it coasted through several stations. >> [indiscernible] it was explained to me that he got out to check something wrong.

i think that the system overall in a normal way. this incident is being investigated on its own. as i said, they cut the power within minutes of that train leaving the station. >> is it conceivable that this man put something in gear and then saw the signal and made a mistake? governor baker: i don' t want to get to hypothetical about this, but i think the big question at this point is the right one. the discussion is going to take place.

versus something else. right? >> is tampering a question? governor baker: it is pretty clear that the main control that drives the train was tampered with. as bill just said, the big issue is whether it was a negligence issue or something else. >> thanks, everybody. governor baker: thank you. emily: we have been listening into governor baker talking about the incident this morning on a red line train. the operator got off that train and then something happened. it may have been tampered with. it is clear that this train went through several stops with no operator, no conductor. we want to talk to someone who as it was happening. fe what was happening? as this was going on? did you know that there was no operator?

it was just a regular train with nothing different. i was in the second car. the train was on the left side. the train on the right side had just left. so, nothing unusual. we closed the door, it started moving. nothing that would cause any type of alarm. emily: you even aware that the operator had gotten off the train? did it seem like just another regular stop on the commute in? fernanda: we did not stop in quincy. we did not stop at that one. is coming. you never know what is going on. that is when the lights started completely went off. the train stopped between quincy a little over 30 minutes. emily: over 30 minutes. enough time to realize, what the heck is going on?

fernanda: one person was calling the mbta transit police. the first view that we had -- we thought it was a medical emergency and that someone had got shot. we did not know exactly where. that was the first information we had. the second information we had -- they opened the in between doors , that is when they started knocking on the driver, so we could know what was going on. was no driver. emily: ok. resolved? did t workers come and get you off the train at that point? did you get off at the next stop? fernanda: yes, we did went to the next stop. two mbta officers arrived. they walked in all the cars and

they asked if anyone was injured. we did not get any new information. we were asking what happened and they just kept walking. "we just want to make sure nobody is hurt." they had an issue with the exit doors. then we were able to stop at jfk. then we all had to get out of the train. emily: fernanda , not the way you were expecting to start your morning, but glad everyone is ok.
