50's. 51 degrees boston. 51 in plymouth. 55 already on the vineyard and 54 degrees on nantucket. but it is much cooler up through the merrimack valley. you can see we're at 30 degrees in concord as well as in keene. as we go through the next 12 hours, we are going to keep temperatures in the 50's and warming up to near 60 degrees in some spots like boston, the south shore, the cape and the islands. we're going to stay in the 50's up through northern massachusetts as well as southern new hampshire. the big reason is this. we have clouds coming in right now. they are associated with a back-door cold front. this cold front slowly working its way in as we head through the afternoon and into the evening. and then we're going to watch this area of low pressure here which is actually going to be our next chance for some significant rain. we'll talk about when coming up. antoinette and frank. antoinette: danielle, thank you. right now. police want to know who left a military rocket at a new hampshire gun shop. the situation so serious that a bomb squad had to be called in.

moments. frank: the eyeopener's john atwater has the scare and close call from pelham. officer: at first glance it obviously looks very intimidating. it looks very official. john: at four-feet long it sure gave officers a scare when they responded to one of the more unusual calls they've ever gotten. officer: you don't know if this is, you know, a live round that at any time could explode. john: police promptly called the bomb squad which x-rayed the rocket and determined the massive weapon was harmless. the man who dropped it off found it while doing renovation work in his home and apparently thought this gun store was best equipped to handle it. officer: when in doubt, bring it to somebody who will be qualified or certified to look into that item. he did and the firearms dealer did the next best thing. they contacted the local law enforcement agency. john: now police are trying to find that man who didn't leave his name. it's not clear how old the rocket may be, but police are relieved they didn't have to respond to its deadly power.

one point and had the potential to be active and to do some damage. luckily that wasn't the case. john: police here are also working with the military this morning to try to get some more in pelham, new hampshire, john atwater, wcvb, newscenter 5. frank: right now. after a man walks into a dunkin this happened around 11:00 last night. victim was stabbed on dutton dunkin donuts for help. no word on any arrests or circumstances surrounding the incident. antoinette: this morning we are waiting to learn the identity of state police say the victim was not walking in the crosswalk on the lynnway when he was struck. the driver of the car that hit him did stay on the scene. surrounding the mbta's runaway train. right. juli: the mbta is still investigating what went wrong thursday morning when veteran operator david vasquez stepped off his red line train and it kept going without him. it would have required the throttle pushed into forward mode. mbta official: in any way wedging or restricting the movement of the train would, in fact, be a prohibited act that would subject the operator to termination. recognizing what went right yesterday-- the quick response of dispatchers at the operation's control center. they got the call within a minute the train was moving without a motor person and knew there was less than a nine-minute buffer until it would reach the next train at wallaston. mbta official: the decisions they made were to clear the line so they expressed trains that had passengers on them to cross j.f.k. first before beginning to make a decision to kill the entire power along the braintree brain. juli: had those trains been closer together, the dispatchers

the entire branch stopping all trains on the track. they kept that as an absolute last resort impacting the fewest riders and also to ensure no trains became stranded between stops. transportation leaders believe this was an isolated incident but can't be certain what happened at the operator's seat. mbta official: we have no reason to believe it is a widespread practice. we do not have cameras in the control cars so there's no video we can review to see what is actually happening. juli: and there was a new policy that was put into place yesterday having to do with the authorization of that by-pass mode which disengages the brakes. now a senior mbta official must be present at that train when the switch is flipped. in braintree, juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: a fallen u.s. army ranger from new hampshire is being remembered this morning. cpl. andrew aimesbury died in a live-fire exercise in georgia. the 21-year-old is being remembered by family and friends for his leadership and dedication to serving his country.

frank: as you shop this holiday season, instead of swiping, many of you are probably using the new "chip" cards. they are safer, but there are still steps you should take to avoid potential fraud. newscenter 5's heather unruh has the warning and the simple way to stay ahead of problems. heather: you've swiped more times than you can count, but that's changing now as you dip the chip. if you have one of the new cards, you know it has a small metallic chip to prevent a thief from accessing your account. julie conroy: and that chip creates a unique transaction code that gets sent to the issuer every time you use your card at the point of sale. heather: analysts like julie conroy say it is more secure, but others remind us scammers are already working to change that. >> they shimmer, which is the new version of the scammer. heather: crooks can wedge a shimmer into the new credit card chip reading slot. security website krebs posted this picture of one. it can record the chip's data similar to what skimmers did with your swipe card. a shimmer has been spotted in mexico. analysts say it's only time before they pop up here. another threat? the lack of a pin number.

receipt, but many new chip cards took away the option of also having a secure pin. one less layer of security. your best defense at this busy shopping time? it's something so basic that only about 12% of us actually do. julie conroy: looking at your credit card statements, looking at your bank statement. heather: a simple daily check of those statements will help ensure you don't become a victim in changing to the chip. not every store has those chip readers yet. that comes with some liability. if you're forced to swipe and fraud is tied to a that transaction, the store could be held responsible for the damages. heather unruh, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meterologist danielle vollmar. antoinette: 46 degrees outside right now. i cannot believe it's december. we're pinching ourselves. this weather is too good. danielle: we just talked about it. we're wearing open-toed shoes
5:14 am
frank: i'm not though. danielle: if you do, we might have to talk more about that later. antoinette: if you wanted to, you could though. just unbelievable. it feels more like mid-april or mid-october than mid-december. so it's spring-like ahead for your saturday. we're also going to see more clouds work their way in on sunday. and it is going to be a touch cooler although still running well above where we should be this time of year. and then we're watching for some much-needed rain coming on monday. more on that timing in just a second. but first let's talk about today because today we're not going to be close to records. we'll be pretty close. i mean, we're going for a high temperature of about 58 in worcester. the record is actually 63 set back in 1911. in boston forecasting a high of 60. the record there though is 68 degrees so even though we're not going to break any records today, we're still running well above where we should be this
5:15 am
51 degrees in boston right now. 52 on the cape. 54 on nantucket. but there is some cold air up there especially near concord, keene and orange. you're holding in the 30's this morning. and you can even be waking up to some patchy fog out there so be aware of that. we do have a little bit of a wind out of the west today. that wind is going to feel anywhere from about 10-15 miles an hour sustained right now. folks. so that means our temperatures are going to warm up really nicely. so we're going to 60 degrees in boston, 60 in taunton. 58 degrees in worcester. and the mid 50's up through the merrimack valley. i will say iforts going to be a mix of sun and clouds with more sunshine i think but more clouds are going to work their way in as we head through the afternoon. and really into the evening. you see a couple of clouds already trying to build their way in but there will be more of them. it's associated with this back-door cold front that is dropping in. so mild air is really to the
5:16 am
cooler. it's not cold. it's cool. that's the big story here so we're going to stay mild for the next couple of days. in fact here's what happens on our future cast. notice that that back-door cold front kind of comes through on saturday night into sunday. then we're going to start to bump right back up as we watch this area of low pressure that's going to bring us some monday. so tonight temperatures will drop back into the 30's and 40's nantucket. it will be mostly cloudy, i think tonight. winds starting to shift to the north and then finally tomorrow the northeast to the east. so we're going to have definitely more clouds around tomorrow. i think it's the mostly cloudy day. there could even maybe be some patchy drizzle by the coastline tomorrow. notice the temperatures running about 10 to even 15 degrees cooler than today. this is all associated with this cold front. then we're watching this area of low pressure so rain chances are
5:17 am
now monday morning, there could be some patchy drizzle around but by monday afternoon, we're start to go see more shower active. by monday night, high shower activity. in fact, there could be downpours overnight into first thing tuesday morning so let me show you this on the future cast here. it's all that area of low pressure. here it comes. it is mild though with temperatures in the 50's. but we are looking for gusty downpours and rainfall rates in excess of about half an inch to an inch from this system. behind it, we're still mild on tuesday. we're a bit breezy but then we start to drop temperatures back into the 40's which is actually where we should be this time of year by the end of the week. antoinette and frank. antoinette: danielle, thank you. 5:17. stories we're following right now on the eye. the defense rests its case in the manslaughter trial of a baltimore police officer. frank: that officer is the first of six to stand trial in the death of freddie gray. officer william porter testified he did not see any injuries on gray when, after his arrest, he said he was in need of medical care. however, porter maintains he did tell the driver of a police van
5:18 am
wanted to go to the hospital. gray was instead taken to the police station with a broken neck. closing arguments are expected monday. antoinette: a texas grand jury will look at the mysterious death of a black woman who died in police custody. it was back in july that sandra bland was found dead in her jail cell. the sheriff's office said she committed suicide, but her family maintains she would have never taken her own life. a preliminary autopsy supports the sheriff's office claim. frank: a call to declare to islamic holidays federal holidays is not getting support from the white house. president obama has declined a petition calling for eid aladha and eid al-fitr as national holidays. congress has only designated 10 federal holidays a year. that petition had more than 100,000 signatures. those were obtained in less than a month. antoinette: a new health concern from daily stress may be linked to memory loss. in a study of more than 500 people older than 70, those who
5:19 am
stress had more than double the rate of memory problems three years later. researchers say more work is needed to figure out that link. >> now sportscenter 5 with bob halloran. x bob: it was game 23 for the celtics this season but it sure felt like a game 7. just like a play-off game it was that exciting. imagine if there were a play-off game. it went all the way into double overtime. the celtics finding out tonight that their very best stacked up pretty well against the very best. fourth quarter action. isiah thomas knocks down the three to give the celtics the lead. but this man is incredible. a long-range three to give the warriors the lead with under a minute to go. thomas driving to the hole. he ties it at 10. they take it to overtime and then double overtime. finally the celtics couldn't come up with enough shots. a fantastic game. 124-119 the final. in double o.t. encouraging news from the

gronk and edelman were on it. gronk for a second straight day. he's now listed as questionable on the patriots' injury report which means it's a coin flip as to whether he plays sunday night in hughes torch. as for edelman a surprise to see him on the field today, yesterday, that is, but no surprise he's out for sunday's game. >> i'd like to be back as soon as i can but, you know, doing it safely and then smart. just trying to improve each day. bob: and the bruins play at the garden against the florida panthers while the celtics travel to lay charlotte. that's a look at sports. i'm bob halloran. have a great day. antoinette: terrifying video. a bicyclist just inches away train. another angle shows the last second the train speeds by from under him. that's why he got tossed away there. the man was taken to the okay.

i'm meteorologist danielle vollmar. this morning it all depends where you live, how warm you are this morning. we're starting out 51 degrees in boston. 46 in worcester. but it's a cooler 36 in nashua. you only need a coat if you're headed out first thing there. as for snow, we so far have had none today. we're looking for that. our average to date is actually 3.4 inches. last year at this time we had 2.9 inches in boston and 7.5 inches in worcester. one thing we are going to see we could use it. it's going to be increasing at, at least the chances, through the day of monday. the fact monday night pretty heavy rain could come through. gusty winds. it should basically taper off
5:24 am
when all is said and done, we could see about half an inch to an ench to even an inch and a quarter in some spots which is definitely much needed. behind this system, temperatures are back to where they should be antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. all she wants are christmas cards. and this morning they continue to come in for safyre terry. look at all those. the seven-year-old girl was getting treatment here in boston. she was there as nearly 18,000 cards and 60 packages arrived at the post office from all around the world. great to see that. she absolutely deserves that. keep them coming in, right. frank: absolutely. antoinette: a very special holiday concert at boston children's hospital. frank: a 10-year-old girl celebrating one year since brain surgery. sophie fellows joined 17 of her fellow students from the vermont violin school.

5:30 am
temperatures are holding in the 30's. it's 31 in orange. 32 in fitchburg. just south of fitchburg in worcester it's 46 degrees. and then you go farther to the south and east, and it's 55 degrees on the vineyard. so it is going to be a warm day in a lot of spots especially down along southeastern mass. we're talking high temperatures warming up into the upper 50's to pushing the low 60's. it will be a mix of sun and clouds. i think out there today. although this morning most of us waking up to pretty much clear skies except for you folks that talked about may have a little bit of fog out there. 58 worcester. 60 boston. 60 in taunton. the upper 50's on the cape. the winds are going to be out of the west at about 5-15 miles an hour. you will notice them when you step outside the door. a little bit of cloud cover out there right now. and more clouds will be pulling down from the north associated with this back-door cold front. but we're also watching this other area of low pressure you can see right here. next big rain maker is this one. we'll talk about when we could

head through this weekend and into the beginning of next week. now, there is going to be a drop in temperatures tomorrow. boston today i'm going for a high of 60. worcester 58 degrees. by tomorrow, we'll be at 50 i think in boston and the upper 40's in worcester. so about 10 degrees difference. we're still running above normal though. we will take it. you will notice it when you step outside the door. here is the reason why. we have a back-door cold front that is slowly working its way down into our area. right now, the cool air is up through northern new england, but it is mild across most of southern new england. and that is really where we're going to stay through the day today. as you look, i do want to talk about something that is happening this morning. there has been some patchy fog out there especially in fitchburg, in nashua where visibilities are now down to about three miles. and so because of that, the temperatures this morning are starting out cooler up through the merrimack valley and, say, through orange where you can see you're starting at 31 degrees.

but in the 50's in boston to plymouth down to the cape as well as nantucket. so it depends on where you live, what you're waking up to this morning. now everybody should warm up through the day today. the only exception whether probably be southern new hampshire staying in the mid 50's today. whereas parts of southeastern mass will be up into the low 60's. boston, i think, will get up into the upper 50's, low 60's: it will be a mix of sun and clouds. you're going to feel that wind out of the west at about 5-15 miles an hour. lawrence. 60 boston. 57 on nantucket. not a bad-looking day. then tonight it will be mostly cloudy. temperatures fall back into the 30's up through new hampshire. 40's in worcester. 45 in boston. and even upper 40's on nantucket. now here comes that back-door cold front. it will take down the milder air and push it farther to the south. so by sunday, we are cooler. we're seeing more clouds around

in fact, some areas like the coastline because we have a northeast to easterly breeze, could even pick up some patchy drizzle. so just be aware of that. if you're looking to do things outside, i would do most of it today because tomorrow it will be kind of a cloudy day and maybe some patchy drizzle. temperatures much cooler too in the 40's and 50's. and then the rain chances really start to work their way up as we head through monday. associated with another storm system that is out in the midwest right now. by monday afternoon, we're seeing some rain. by monday night, high chances of rain. we could see a half an inch to an inch of rain in total from this system so i do want to show you this on this future cast and break it down for you. notice monday morning could be light drizzle around but the heavier rain moving in overnight into first thing tuesday when all is said and done. about a half an inch to an inch of rain. now it will be breezy on tuesday but still mild in the 50's. then we drop back with a northwest wind into the 40's by antoinette? 5:47.

across the board upper 50's, low 60's today but a cold front is dropping in. and as it does, it's going to bring down colder air. in fact as you look on sunday what's going to happen is that cold front is actually going to bring in temperatures that are in the upper 40's through new hampshire as well as worcester. 50 in boston. the record high in boston is 63 obviously because that back-door cold front gets here and turns those winds to the north and east. we're not going to see that. we're going to see more clouds and maybe some patchy drizzle. antoinette? antoinette: danielle, thank you. okay. listen to this. a "star wars" toy made almost 40 years ago has sold at auction for a price that's out of this world. a bidder paid $25,000 for this luke skywalker action figure. it's considered very rare. luke's lightsaber broke easily, so the toys were pulled from production. the star wars figure is part of a quarter-million-dollar auction of star wars memorabilia by sotheby's. a japanese music and fashion mogul is selling his collection of rare and unique items from
