it. live in boston this morning, juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now. firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in worcester that killed an elderly brother and sister. the flames broke out around 8:00 last night on burncoat street. neighbors say the siblings lived in the single-family home for decades. firefighters say the fire spread quickly. by the time they arrived on scene, most of the damage had already been done. we're still waiting to learn the names of the victims. right now a 90-year-old man is in the hospital after being hit by a car in revere. it happened on malden street we're told the victim has serious injuries. the driver of the car stayed on the scene and was also taken to the hospital. connecticut and the nation will mark a somber anniversary today. it was three years ago that a gunman opened fire at sandy hook elementary school killing 20 children and six educators. fresh in everyone's minds, the faces of the lives lost. this is the first time the anniversary has fallen on a

emily: a big change may be coming this week for tobacco laws in boston. this thursday a vote is set on a proposal to raise the age to buy tobacco products to 21. mayor marty walsh is backing the proposal, saying he hopes it can discourage young people from taking up smoking. if it passes, the new rule would go into effect early next year. a similar bill is in the works on beacon hill right now also looking to increase the statewide age to 21. tom brady and rob gronkowski reunited on the field down in houston last night. that helped the patriots clinch a spot in the play-off. after gronk missed last week's game with a sprained and bruised right knee, gronk a major boost to the ailing offense helping to get the team back on track. the patriots dominated this one. with just 14 seconds to go in the half, brady throws up a jump ball and gronkowski get his 10th touchdown catch of the year making it look easy. 17-6 patriots at the half and no looking back from there. the tight end happy to get back to work. gronk: everything just worked out. throughout the last two weeks,

>> hi, i'm not with you this morning but i want to show you some wonderful people who are here tonight in the boston convention center honoring our fallen heroes post 9/11 here in massachusetts and their families who are with us. good morning, "eyeopener." emily: good morning to you. we are so proud to pay tribute to our gold star families as boston's community leader. there were more than 1,200 people on hand at this event friday night. randy says it was one of the nicest and most moving events he's taken part in. erika: an amazing crowd. nice to see randy. show us what makes you proud in your community by recording a wake-up call. then post it by going to the front page of wcvb.com and upload it in the u-local section of our website.

kevin: good morning, everybody. erika: good morning to you. kevin: it's not even friday yet and we're getting all whacky here. emily: monday morning. i told kevin he had to say something funny. now he felt the pressure. kevin: i have nothing to say. emily: all right. you have stuff to say. cindy: the weather has been kind of funny very undecember-like. these are live pictures this morning from memorial drive. we've got the cloud cover in place this morning but fog not an issue. you may encounter a patch or two of drizzle. you may want to do one of these with the wipers this morning. just briefly use it. we do have the risk of a little bit of patchy drizzle or a spot shower in the forecast today. but i think the bulk of the steadier rain will hold off until after the evening commute. so the steadiest rain comes in overnight. at that time could hear a little bit of thunder as well. we have rain on the way but this morning it is is just cloudy and on the mild side. look at these temperatures. upper 40's on the cape. low 40's worcester. low 40's up toward nashua as well.
5:13 am
the temperature s are going to pick up pretty slowly. we should come up to around 50 degrees by late morning. and then spend the afternoon in the 50's. but all the while, the clouds are going nowhere. really that's all we have out there this morning. there is a little bit of wintery precipitation up across northern maine where there's some snow flying this morning. but you have to head far to the west to get into that steady shield of rain. it's coming ahead of this frontal system. low pressure passing to our west. it is just spinning up a ton of mild air. it is in the low 60's right now. cincinatti to charleston. you can see pittsburgh in the lower 50's. that's the air mass that works on in so despite the clouds all day long, notice how the temperatures do come up into the mid and even some upper 50's. cooler across southern new hampshire today. and you can see through the morning hours, just a patch or two of drizzle. and then just cloud cover throughout the day. notice for your evening commute 6:00 p.m. rain is still off to the west. i think showers advance eastward. by about 8:00 you should be raining in worcester this evening. then overnight widespread rain embedded downpours.
5:14 am
by about 5:00 tomorrow morning, the steadiest rain is shifting off shore. we'll find quick clearing behind it. in terms fsz rainfall looks like a widespread half an inch of rain. perhaps less farther to the north and the temperatures will actually hold steady or rise aing bit overnight through the 50's. and that's where they stay tomorrow. clearing skies. gusty winds. temperatures coming again into the 50's throughout the day. and those winds are going to be quite active as this storm starts to pull away and really we are going to see some improvements tomorrow. so in terms of the temperatures, still holding on to those reading into the 50's tomorrow but it's a little deceiving because the winds are going to be gusting up over 20 even close to 30 miles an hour throughout the morning hours and then as we go through the day, winds get stronger. could see gusts over 40 out through the worcester hills. that brings in cooler air for the middle of the week. and then another rain event coming. it looks like later thursday and friday. behind that one, yeah, there's some cooler air waiting behind that one. blustery by next weekend. i spy december on saturday. it's finally going to feel like it.
5:15 am
overnight rains tonight and the temperatures mild, no chance of early morning freezing? cindy: nothing like that. the roads will be wet for tomorrow morning. kevin: roads are dry right now. could be a little bit different story later tonight but a live shot at route 1 here in saugus. looking pretty good so far coming down through that stretch. we've got a little company up by the jug handle lights in peabody. overall a fairly nice ride down to the tobin bridge. we've been keeping an eye on the crash on 128 south manchester-by-the-sea. a crash which school street as two lanes block. just the breakdown lanes getting by. you do have some slowdowns. getting by that should be in the process of clearing. it's been out there for quite a while. routes 3, 93, 95, nice ride new hampshire down to 128 and beyond. downtown pick up all the overnight work crews. the expressway so far so good. you're getting a little busy. still a 10-minute ride split up to the o'neill tunnel. no troubles on routes 3, 24, 95. you're looking good out to the west. if you're starting the morning with the trains, all lines are running on time. emily. emily: sounds good, kevin. thank you.
5:16 am
student. dennis njoroge hasn't been seen for two weeks. this morning family and friends are pleading for help and hoping for clues. they spent sunday handing out flyers at northeastern university and at other areas around boston. njoroge was home in worcester for thanksgiving. his older sister talked to him just as he returned to campus. both she and her mom are understandably concerned. >> i am concerned because we used to talk almost every two days, either through texts or phone calls. >> i do love him so much. i love him so much. mike: the family also set up this facebook page to help with their search. they say it's not like him not to be in contact. anyone with any information is asked to call northeastern university police. flames rip through an apartment building in southbridge. this morning 15 families now have to find someplace else to stay. the good news-- no one was seriously hurt when this fire broke out sunday morning. the fire at the rosemeade complex quickly grew to four
