view unlike any other. and christmas is coming so something to add to the wish list. good morning. i'm emily riemer. erika: thanks for starting your day right here. randy is off. cindy is is here. another comfortable start. unseasonable. cindy: middle of december. usually it's in the 20's but not today. on average our high this time of year is 42. we're waking up warmer than this morning. definitely a mild start. low to mid 40's out there. 47 in boston. 42 in worcester. we've got upper 40's to near 50 on the cape this morning. so kids out at the bus stop, cloudy, mild start. 40's now getting off the bus this afternoon. in the 50's. can't rule out a spot shower or some patchy drizzle throughout the day. but not a lot happening here in southern new england this morning. there is some snow across far northern maine this morning. but a storm system to our west going to spin up some mild temperatures throughout the day. and the steady rain looks like

south of town 24 out of brockton now right up into randolph. in weymouth. up to the sphrai now braintree split right up through columbia from braintree to boston. if you're taking the trains, all lines are running on time. erika, emily. emily: kevin, thank you. right now jurors are just hours away from deciding the fate of the teenager accused of raping and murdering his teacher. erika: all eyes will be on the courthouse in salem today. the eyeopener's sera congi is there to set the stage. sera: erika and emily, closing arguments are scheduled for then the jury will begin deliberating on whether the danvers teenager is guilty of murder. the trial began in october for philip chism. prosecutors allege he murdered danvers high school math teacher colleen ritzer two years ago. she was killed in the school's bathroom. stabbed 16 times. outside the school. chism was 14 years old at the time. jurors will have to decide on

degree murder, aggravated rape, and armed robbery. he faces a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. now during opening arguments chism lawyers admitted that he killed ritzer. however, they are building an insanity defense. they claim that he is severely mentally ill. live this morning at the salem courthouse, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: right now we are awaiting new developments in the case of a runaway red line train that put passengers at risk. the eyeopener's juli mcdonald is live in boston with what's at stake for the worker involved today. reporter: that's right, emily and erika. the operator who was supposed to be at the controls of that runaway red line train faces a disciplinary hearing today. as "5 investigates" was first to report, the employee involved is this man-- david vazquez. we've also learned he did not follow several safety procedures including setting the brake before stepping out of the operator's cab. the train traveled from braintree to quincy thursday

50 passengers were on board. no one was hurt. we'll be following today's hearing very closely and bring you new information as we get it. live in downtown boston, juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now. firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in worcester that killed an elderly brother and sister. the flames broke out around 8:00 last night on burncoat street. neighbors say the siblings lived in the single-family home for decades. firefighters say the fire spread quickly. by the time they arrived on scene, most of the damage had already been done. we're still waiting to learn the names of the victims. right now a 90-year-old man is in the hospital after being hit by a car in revere. it happened on malden street we're told the victim has serious injuries. the scene and was also taken to the hospital. erika: it's now 6:05.

mark a somber anniversary today. it was three years ago that a elementary school killing 20 children and six educators. fresh in everyone's minds, the faces of the lives lost. anniversary has fallen on a school day. newtown's high school and middle school will mark the tragedy with moments of silence. but lower grade schools will just try to keep the day as normal as possible for students giving parents the option of discussing the tragedy with their children. today massachusetts leaders will mark the anniversary by unveiling a new gun-control billboard. it's being sponsored by "stop handgun violence." that's the same group behind attention-grabbing billboards overlooking the mass pike near fenway park. that billboard came down after the parking garage under it s sold. across the from the hynes convention center. emily: commitment 2016. the campaign trail in new hampshire. sanders: it is an insurgency

elements of the establishment. emily: the democrat spent sunday in iowa making at least four stops in the critical battleground state. the iowa caucus is just seven weeks ago. on the republican side, ben carson doubled down on his threat to leave the g.o.p. if the party engages in what he calls "back-room deals." carson: if that is the case, then i'm out of here. emily: the republican front-runners will meet in another debate tomorrow night in las vegas. and this saturday night, the three democratic candidates will debate in new hampshire. abc news and channel 5 will have live coverage beginning at 8:00 p.m. erika: new bedford is mourning the death of the city's police chief. david provencher died last night after suffering respiratory arrest at st. luke's hospital. he was 59 years old and a survivor of throat cancer. new bedford mayor jon mitchell called provencher an outstanding police chief and a great man. "5 on the opioid crisis" and new help for a community struggling with addiction.

open in charlestown. 25 people have overdosed in charlestown this year. three of them died. and "the globe" reports hepatitis c, often an indicator of drug use, is higher in charlestown than any other boston neighborhood. emily: a big change may be coming this week for tobacco laws in boston. this thursday a vote is set on a proposal to raise the age to buy tobacco products to 21. mayor marty walsh is backing the proposal, saying he hopes it can discourage young people from taking up smoking. if it passes, the new rule would go into effect early next year. a similar bill is in the works on beacon hill right now also looking to increase the statewide age to 21. tom brady and rob gronkowski reunited on the field. and that helped the patriots clinch a spot in the playoffs. gronk a major boost to the ailing offense, helping to get the team back on track. erika: the patriots dominated this one. with just 14 seconds to go in the half, brady throws up a jump ball and gronkowski get his 10th touchdown catch of the year

the east-southeast right now. and that flow of air off the ocean keeping the temperatures up overnight. upper 40's to around 50 for you on the cape. 47 in beverly. out in worcester we're 4 des. over the next 12 hours there will be a slow tick up in the temperatures despite all the cloud cover throughout the day. should be right around 50 degrees at noontime. we'll spend the afternoon in the 50's despite the clouds. the temperatures are going to warm up. now to the north there's actually been a little bit of snow across far northern maine. warmer air though is surging north ward out ahead of this storm system. low pressure here tracking to our west up through the great lakes. that is going to send the warmth in our direction. you can see it's in the upper 50's right now. near 60 in d.c. they're going to hit 70 today. it is already in the upper 60's, close to 70 down in tennessee. this is that warm air mass that will surge north ward ahead of the storm system. even with the clouds, we're only up in the mid even upper 50's late in the day. cooler up near the new hampshire border but throughout the day nothing more than a spot shower or some drizzle.

still off to the west. starts to pivot into worcester county by 8:00 p.m. then overnight midnight to about 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, that's when we're going to see the steadiest rain. there could be a rumble of thunder. some downpours and then the rain tomorrow. we'll dry it out throughout the day. i'm expecting half an inch of rain on average. perhaps a little bit less to the overnight those temperatures tick up. 50's overnight but there are day tomorrow. one more day in the 50's with clearing skies in the wake of our storm system and a real gusty wind coming out of the west. that's going to bring in that dryer air but that wind is going to be super active throughout the day tomorrow. notice during the morning hours, we're gusting over 20 miles per hour 689 and then in the afternoon, winds could actually gust over 40 miles per hour. that brings cooler air in for wednesday. and the next storm system coming in on thursday. evening hours. another area of low pressure coming up from the south. so it's mild as that comes through. rain tapers off on friday.

blustery saturday. when was the last time we used the word blustery? kevin: last year. cindy: it's been a while. it will feel like december by next weekend. kevin: good for us. you know, we've been getting a number of problems on area roadways here this morning. just within the last 15 minutes here. this is residual delays on route 1 southbound in the saugus stretch down to an earlier crash by lynne street. let's go to the maps and show you where that is right now. we're seeing big delays route 1 from that 95 off ramp all the way down to the earlier crash that we had. 93 slowdowns after 128 but everyone is held up to a crash down at 125 coming out of that andover stretch. route 3 has slowdowns. 495 to treble cove road. 95 northbound a crash by 495 taking out the left lane. delays pushing back to 295. 24 northbound slow going here out of brockton all the way up into randolph. that will take you almost 30

now if you're taking the trains this morning, so far mbta reporting all line s are running on time. emily. emily: kevin, thank you. right now a desperate search is on for this missing college student. dennis njoroge hasn't been seen for two weeks. this morning family and friends are pleading for help and hoping for clues. they spent sunday handing out flyers at northeastern university and at other areas around boston. njoroge was home in worcester for thanksgiving. his older sister talked to him just as he returned to campus. both she and her mom are understandably concerned. >> i am concerned because we used to talk almost every two days, either through texts or phone calls. >> i do love him so much. i love him so much. mike: the family also set up this facebook page to help with their search. they say it's not like him not to be in contact. anyone with any information is asked to call northeastern university police. flames rip through an apartment building in southbridge. this morning 15 families now have to find someplace else to

the good news-- no one was seriously hurt when this fire broke out sunday morning. the fire at the rosemeade complex quickly grew to four alarms before firefighters from neighboring communities were able to knock it down. this building was just rebuilt after it was damaged in the june 2011 tornado. new fire alarms were installed. the building was up to code. something firefighters credit with helping avoid tragedy. a firefighter and a resident were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. erika: it is now 6:19. economic headlines this monday morning. asian markets were mostly lower overnight. all eyes will be on the federal reserve which is expected to decide wednesday on whether to raise interest rates for the crisis. right now stock futures are higher. online retail giant amazon is pulling some types of hoverboards after reports of several of them bursting into flames. amazon says it will no longer carry boards made by swagway until safety reviews of the products are complete. the problem may be connected to

batteries which can sometimes burst into flames. emily: want to avoid the snack lines at the movie theater? there's an app for that. the largest theater chains including a.m.c. and regal are rolling out mobile apps that allow you to pre-order popcorn on your phone before you arrive. then you just swing by a pickup station and head to your seat. a.m.c. is also considering snack delivery for theaters with reserved seating. erika: stress is a given during the holidays. snacks that may take the edge off. try starting the day with oatmeal with berries. the oats have b vitamins to stabilize your mood while the berries pack a big dose of vitamin c to keep stress away. during the day, snack on whole grain crackers with nut butter. the carbs in the crackers and the protein in the nuts stabilize your blood sugar which is key to keeping calm. and finally, consider some salmon sushi with brown rice. experts say fatty fish is key to protecting your heart from stress-induced diseases which is key this time of year. emily: the return of a tradition

christmas bell is now hanging downtown. a similar bell was part of the city's decorations for years but hasn't been seen for decades. this year an effort to replace this piece of the past was lead by h.c. media, which built a new bell with the help of students at whittier regional vo-tech high school. the bell was hoisted into place and lit for the first time saturday night. it also has a speaker inside that plays holiday music. stealing packages from doorsteps is becoming more and more common. one homeowner's unique approach to the problem ahead in eyepoppers. erika? erika: new at 6:30. arrested for speeding two times in less than a week. that driver greeted by a familiar face. loved one killed outside the business he loved. how he is being remembered this morning. the mother of a little boy killed at sandy hook with a new mission. keeping schools and children

that way. but what i'm watching is this area of low pressure back here. this is spinning toward us. it will bring in steadier rain but i think most of that comes after the evening commute. so much of the day is dry. sun is up at 7:05. should about 51 degrees at noontime with a lot of clouds and temperatures holding in the 50's throughout the day. but can't rule out a spot shower or patchy drizzle. i think it's after the evening commute that we start to see some showers come in to worcester county. there will be some downpours overnight. can't even rule out a rumble of thunder. the biggest impacts from the rain come in overnight and into first thing tomorrow morning. let's get you out to the roads right now. not even done with the rain. we have trouble. kevin: dry roadways but very busy out there. most of the accidents are cleared away at this time. the expressway no trouble. just that normal volume. 30 minutes getting by the gas tan frk the split right up to the o'neill tunnel. let's go to the maps. further south you've got the slowdowns on route 3 beginning right around route 18, slow up

and 93 north approaching route 37. 24 on the brakes out of the brockton stretch. 95 an earlier crash by 495. looks like it's in the clearing stagesment big residual delays back beyond 295. mass pike slowdowns right around route 9 in through that framingham-natick stretch. up to the north route 3 on the brakes after 495. 93 south cleared an earlier crash by 125. delays down most of the way to the city now. and route 1 jammed here off the 95 ramp. it will take you about 37 minutes to get down into revere. from an earlier crash. erika. erika: kevin, thanks. now to the stories we're tracking right now on the eye. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a deadly fire in worcester. an elderly brother and sister were killed when flames broke out in their home on burncoat street last night. closing arguments are set for this morning in the trial of the danvers teenager charged with raping and murdering teacher colleen ritzer. lawyers for phillip chism claim he was insane at the time. and a disciplinary hearing is set for today for the mbta

runaway red line train. "5 investigates" has learned david vazquez ignored several safety procedures. emily: and new this morning, that's not the only trouble for the red line. the eyeopener's juli mcdonald is live in boston with the new numbers that may concern commuters. juli: emily and erika, it won't come as a surprise to people who take the red line that it's ranked as one of the mbta's worst performing subway lines. but new data from the "t" is painting a particularly grim picture. just last week the red line reported delays due to disabled trains on monday, tuesday, and thursday along with delays because of signal problems. the mbta has set an on-time performance goal of 75%. but new data shows the red line has fallen short of that goal nearly half the time during rush hours from september through this month. only the orange line fared the mbta's financial review board meets today. among the topics-- how to improve service on the

live in downtown boston, i'm juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter emily: right now the man accused of killing a stoughton business owner is preparing to head to the family of 71-year-old joseph beloved husband, father and grandfather. brady ran a christmas tree lot along route 27. he was run down friday night just steps away from the business he owned for 45 years. the man behind the wheel, michael burns of taunton, now facing several charges. police say he was driving under the influence of drugs. brady's wife linda heard the crash. linda: i'm going to be a curse to that man. i'm going to curse him the rest of my life. he's the love of my life and he's gone. i have nothing. i've got my family, thank god for that. emily: linda says her husband inducted in the new england hall of fame for antique racers. he leaves behind 14 grandchildren and three erika: also preparing to head to charged with shooting and killing two people in revere.

murdering a 66-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman in a home thursday night. police say a third person who was shot gave them deleon's name before losing consciousness. they believe the shooting was drug-related. new this morning. hundreds of guns are off the streets in central massachusetts. an annual gun buyback program in several communities netted 271 firearms and 54 pellet guns this weekend. organizers tell "the telegram" it was one of the most successful programs they've ever the buyback allowed people to trade in weapons for supermarket gift cards. emily: a new hampshire man is under arrest this morning, accused of trying to burn down his mother's home while she was in it. 27-year-old justin kane was arrested in salem last night. police say he had an argument with his mother and then poured gasoline on the rear deck of her home and set it on fire. officers arrested him at his father's house. a manchester man is under arrest again, picked up for speeding

police say joel figueroa was clocked going 86 miles per hour yesterday on 93 in bow. he was already facing a reckless operation charge for driving 107 on the same stretch of road in hooksett. he's due in court next month. erika: it is now 6:37. her son was one of 20 children killed three years ago today. emily: the mother taking action to prevent further tragedies like sandy hook. vandals target two mosques in southern california. the hate crime investigation just getting underway. erika: and ahead in news to go, a major traffic backup all because of a mudslide. the bumper-to-bumper nightmare

in the meantime, we've got clouds here in southern new england. there are actually snow across far northern maine this morning. underneath those clouds can't rule out a patch or two of drizzle. there is a little fog out in the worcester area where it's sitting at 42. 47 in boston. notice over the next 12 hours here we're going to see those temperatures come up. by lunchtime, lower 50's. by 5:00 p.m. it's in the mid 50's with a lot of cloud cover throughout the day. it looks as though we're going to see the steadier rain hold off. notice by about the evening shower activity is here to the west. that will start to spill into worcester county around 8:00 this evening and then by midnight, most of us are raining. could be a rumble of thunder with some downpours overnight. first thing tomorrow morning though the rain is exiting the coast. we will dry out quickly tomorrow but the winds are going to be super active tomorrow. could see gusts 0-40 miles per hour. 50's today and tomorrow. wednesday. all right. a busy morning on the roads snerch certainly is. especially here on the upper end

trial. 16-year-old philip chism is being tried as an adult. he's accused of murdering and raping danvers high school math teacher colleen ritzer two years ago. during opening statements chism's attorneys admitted in open court that he killed her. but they claim he was suffering a psychotic episode. they've built a case for an insanity defense. jurors will have to decide on three charges-- first degree murder, aggravated rape, and armed robbery. he faces life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years if convicted. live this morning in salem, sera congi, wcvb beings newscenter 5. juli: we are expecting to learn more today about the red line train carrying 50 people and how it traveled more than four stops without an operator thursday morning. david vazquezz faces a disciplinary hearing today. "5 investigates" was the first to report that he stepped off the train without setting the brakes, and it kept moving. transportation secretary stephanie pollack says wedging or restricting the position of

prohibited act. if it happened, it would subject the operator to termination. the mbta had to cut power to the third rail to stop that train. none of those passengers on board was hurt. stay with us though as we continue to learn more about this hearing. live in boston, julie mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: investigators are searching for answers after a deadly fire in worcester, the flames broke out around 8:00 last night on burncoat street. fire officials say an elderly man in his sister died in the by the time firefighters got to the house, most of the damage had already been done. we're still waiting to learn the names of the victims. erika: right now a 90-year-old man is in the hospital after being hit by a car in revere. it happened on malden street just after 7:00 last night. we're told the victim has serious injuries. the driver of the car stayed on the scene and was also taken to the hospital. emily: new questions about the screening process that allowed one of the san bernardino shooters into the country.

"the new york times" says she had posted about jihad and wanting to be a part of it. malik and her husband, syed farook, killed 14 people in that mass shooting on december 2. the f.b.i. and local police are investigating acts of vandalism at two different california mosques as hate crimes. a device that looked like a hand grenade was left in the driveway of one mosque sunday. investigators determined it was a plastic replica. another mosque was spray painted with the phrase "jesus is the way." these are the latest in a handful of incidents at mosques across the country since the san bernardino shootings. erika: organizers of the los angeles bid for the 2024 summer games are raising some red flags. city budget analysts are concerned about the costs surrounding the redevelopment of a city railyard. olympic organizers are hoping to transform the area into the athlete's village for the games. city officials fear the costs of the land and the cleanup could soar to $2 billion.

estimate. l.a. took over the u.s. bid after boston balked at hosting the games. emily: closing arguments are set for today in the trial of the first police officer charged in connection with the death of freddie gray. william porter is accused of manslaughter for not paying attention to gray as he sat handcuffed and shackled in the back of a baltimore police van back in april. gray suffered a spinal injury and died a week later. if convicted, porter faces up to 25 years in prison. erika: right now a desperate search is on for a missing college student. dennis njoroge hasn't been seen for two weeks. this morning family and friends are pleading for help and hoping for clues. they spent sunday handing out flyers around northeastern university's boston campus. anyone with any information is asked to call northeastern university police. emily: president obama will visit the pentagon today to review the military campaign against isis with national security advisers. it is his first visit since attacks in san bernardino and paris.

out of this meeting. they're calling this an update for him. erika: new bedford is mourning the death of the city's police chief. david provencher died last night after suffering respiratory arrest at st. luke's hospital. he was 59 years old and a survivor of throat cancer. new bedford's mayor called provencher an outstanding police chief and a great man. boston is preparing to raise the age to buy tobacco products to 21. mayor marty walsh is backing the idea, saying he hopes it can discourage young people from taking up smoking. if it passes this thursday, the new rule would go into effect early next year. a similar bill is in the works on beacon hill right now, also looking to increase the statewide age to 21. emily: the university of maine is offering bay state students and others from the northeast a tuition break. the new program is an attempt to stem declining enrollment and revenue. students from mass get into u-maine in orono would pay whatever it would have cost them to go to umass amherst.

cost. erika: a sterling man is facing indecent exposure charges in new hampshire. rochester police arrested gary jenke at a walmart yesterday morning. police say they've been called to the same store two other times after similar complaints. jenke is due in court later this morning. emily: mud and rocks slide on to a major highway in the san francisco area tying up traffic for miles. the slide came down just before 6:00 last night. there were no injuries reported. berth after dominating the texans. ailing offense a major boost. with just 14 seconds to go in the half, brady throws up a jump ball and gronk gets his 10th touchdown catch of the year making it look easy. the patriots beat the texans 27-6, but there was another key injury. legarrette blount left the game no word on the extent of the problem.

what we're waiting for is this storm back to west to slide up through the great lakes. that will send a band of some steadier rain in our direction but not until this evening. so notice throughout most of the day today, it's dry. can't rule out that drizzle or a spot shower. that's why it's a good idea to have the umbrella. through the evening commute, steadier rain is off to our west. it comes into worcester county by 8:00 this evening. overnight some downpours and a rumble of thunder possible with the steadiest rain exiting between 5:00 and 6:00 tomorrow morning so we're drying it out tomorrow morning, clearing skies as we head into tomorrow afternoon. temperatures come up through the 50's overnight. and stay there tomorrow. so a mild day coming up for tomorrow. temperatures in the 50's, but howling throughout the day. we're talking about wind gusts likely coming up 20-30 miles per hour in the morning hours. could gust over 40 miles per hour so a gusty wind bringing in some dryer air. sunshine on wednesday, cooler in the 40's and then more rain friday.
