held last summer. he's facing a slew of charges in that case including attempted murder. meanwhile the family of the teacher he is now convicted of killing is vowing to live in kindness. the ritzers wore pink in the courtroom as the jury found philip chism guilty on three of four charges including first degree murder and aggravated rape. through their grief, the ritzers promising to remember colleen and how she lived her life. >> our family enters a new phase in our lives. begin. best to find the good in every day. sera:16-year-old chism now faces life he'll be sentenced after the holidays. it's unclear if he will be here in boston for today's hearing.

emily: thank you. other stories we're following now. two people are hurt after this crash in wakefield. a car rolled over just after 1:00 this morning. both people inside were taken by ambulance to mass general. erika: eight people are hurt airlines flight rolls off the runway in nashville. the plane landed in a ditch last night as it was approaching the arrival gate from houston. the nose appeared damaged. the faa is investigating. emily: that operator of that runaway train was hn fired. the train ran past four stations before it stopped last thursday morning. investigators are looking into whether he tied a chord around the train's controls when he got out to check something.

deny. erika: a major decision is looming that will have a big and the world is watching. the eyeopener's juli mcdonald is district with what we can expect in just hours. juli: economists expect the federal reserve will raise time in nearly a decade. just here but around the world. here's what we know right now. the fed is widely expected to hike that key interest rate by a quarter of a point. it's been near zero since december 2008. basically the hike makes it more expensive for americans to get a mortgage. the fed has been slow to hike rates waiting for surer signs of economic recovery. but today's rate hike is far from the only concern on wall street. investors will be more concerned about any signals from the fed about future rate hikes including how fast they'll come and how much rates will rise. we will be watching all of this very closely so stay with us throughout the day.

>> one of the problems is he is far too often supported hillary clinton and barack obama. debate. carly fiorina made a case to involve tech companies in surveillance against home grown terrorists. ben carson, his numbers fading, said he's be tough in protecting the u.s.. this is the last republican debate of 2015. at least two more are scheduled before the iowa caucuses in february. debate stage in new hampshire this weekend. they'll face off saturday in campaigning in minnesota, front-runner hillary clinton unveiled her plan to defeat isis saying americans can't give in to fear. >> we can't let it stop us from doing what is right and necessary to make us safe and doing it in a way that is consistent with our values.

emily: newscenter5 on the opioid crisis. nurses and athletic trainers in norfolk county will receive training today on how to use the overdose-reversing drug narcan. the norfolk district attorney says overdose deaths in the community have a pattern of starting with sports injuries. athletes can get addicted to opioids when they're prescribed to them after getting hurt. erika: a new federal report suggests teen misuse of prescription painkillers is decreasing. 12th graders who said they had used narcotics, other than heroin, decreased 5.4% from a high of 9.5% in 2004. fewer students also said

emily: 4:45 this morning. mike was just telling us about his trip to puerto rico. he would like to go back. it is a little chilly tonight. mike: 82 a day there. if you get a chance to go there, i recommend it. in fact, take me along. i came back, i'm expecting snow on the ground. cold weather. what do i get? temps into the 50's. the temperatures running 10 degrees above average. you know that is not going to last. let's talk about what it is

temperatures, although they look cool this morning compared to yesterday are still pretty close to where we're supposed to be for daytime highs. good news for some skiers. you may get a little bit of natural power well to the north. dew point, relatively dry. winds in a northeasterly direction. that may push some clouds in. we have a little deck right now. not much. a few spots of drizzle. it is going to continue to thin out. the big weathermaker this week is way out here with the central plains. you can see what's happening. we have showers. we have snow. we have heavy rain. there are those thunderstorms right there. this whole thing is going to eventually get here but when it comes in, it is so mild that it is going to be in the form of

today, mostly sunny skies. temperatures about where they are at now. they are not going to change much. they will dip down and come back up. temperatures 32-38. i'm not too worried about icy conditions here but in the berkshires we could see some. even if we have rain coming in, it is not going to be a big issue. way out west, you might run into a couple of areas we'll keep a close eye on. look at this. climbing into the 50's. that's why precipitation will be in the form of rain and not snow. here is that system. it is working its way in. headed towards canada. it is going to bragg drag this warm air in here. tomorrow morning, not much going on. tomorrow night, a little reinforcement coming in. eventually cooler weather starts coming in. i don't want to use the word cold. even though it is going to be much chillier than what we see

sense of humor. >> basically they have my trophy. i want the rock. i want to put it on the mantel over my fire lace. erika: of course repts the rock. emily: watch the top left of your screen. a construction wall collapses onto a malden sidewalk. several people trapped including a mother and her baby. more than a dozen people came to the rescue. firefighters, able to save the baby, while paramedics helped his mother. both their injuries are considered minor. workers took down the rest of the wall, as investigators try to figure out why this collapsed. erika: the feds are now launching an investigation into hoverboards that appear to burst into flames. this is what's left of the latest hoverboard that burned in california. at least a dozen reported cases in 10 states so far this holiday season. amazon has stopped selling some models because of the risk which may be from lithium batteries. emily: investors around the world have their eyes on the federal reserve ahead of an expected interest rate hike. that sent asian stocks surging this morning. right now, stock futures are up on wall street, after the dow

17,524. emily: changes are coming to chipolte lay after an e. coli outbreak and noro virus. health officials have not been able to identify the source of the outbreak. a check of your trending stories. a state of emergency in flint, michigan over a water crisis mayor karen weaver is asking for state and federal help for what she calls a man-made disaster. the city switched its water there. source to the flint river in 2014, while it awaits a pipeline project. but doctors say infants and children now have above average levels of lead in their blood. bacterial infections and rashes in kids have also spiked.

relaxing its rules on hairstyles for women. they will now allow dreadlocks and twists. the uniform board determined that the hairstyles would be easier for female marines to maintain on expeditions. the military has faced criticism over it's ban on hairstyles that are historically popular and practical for women of color. emily: a proposal leads to legal trouble for a texas couple. vidal had his friend stop traffic so he could pop the question to his girlfriend. he could face a fine or up to six months in jail. the couple has apologized . the silver lining here, at least she didn't say no. they are getting married. it is 4:52. the extra safety steps a school

emily: it is now 4:5. time for your early news to go. a second case against a teen accused yesterday of murdering his teacher, heads to court today. today's hearing will focus on philip chism's alleged attack on a social worker, while he was being held last summer. he's facing attempted murder charges in that incident. the 16-year-old now faces life in prison after he was convicted yesterday in the murder of colleen ritzer. erika: new hampshire police are searching for this man, before he can strike again. you see him jump the counter at a manchester convenience store and trade punches with the clerk monday night, while holding a knife. police are investigating if the same guy robbed another store a few hours later. nobody was hurt in this

erika: the man accused in this robbery in brewster will be arraigned today. michael sletzinger is charged with holding up the brewster farms market on sunday night. new bedford police say he may have pulled off another robbery in that city. and he could face more charges. emily: all los angeles public schools will be open today after a terror threat shut them down yesterday. the threat came to an l.a. school board member. hundreds of thousands of students stayed home. new york city received the same threat, but called it an obvious hoax. in boston, there was brief concern when the city's internet system crashed this morning but it was blamed on a sudden infusion of data. emily: bridgewater state university is introducing a new app to students, designed to keep them safe on campus. the smartphone app, known as rave guardian, has been tailored to the university. it works like a panic call button to the university, and the police department. it then tracks students using their phone gps, if it's turned on. erika: jurors in baltimore are back today, after failing to reach a verdict in the first of

freddie gray. officer william porter is charged with manslaughter, after gray died from injuries sustained while in police custody. deadlocked. armored vehicles and police are on standby around the city if and when the verdict comes in. emily: a major international conference on syria will take place in new york on friday. secretary of state john kerry and russian president vladimir putin agreed to the meeting yesterday when the opposing sides met in moscow. secretary kerry says the u.s. accepts russia's position on syria president bashar assad and both sides want to find a peaceful end to the war in syria. emily: rhode island lawmakers are making another pitch to get curt schilling to testify. a first subpoena expired without ever being served to schilling, who lives in massachusetts. now they will issue a second. rhode island wants schilling to testify about his video gaming company that went belly up after

this is where we should be now. this is where we may get this afternoon but we are way above average. yesterday of course you got so used to temperatures in the 60's. boston should be about 44. most of the temperatures nicely in the 40's today. a little bit of a northeasterly breeze and we may see a new deck of clouds develop through the afternoon. now a thin deck along the coast. not very big. it is going to dissipate through the morning and give us plenty of sunshine throughout the afternoon. then a new batch of clouds my try to develop later on this afternoon. there is where those clouds are now. the real rainmaker is sitting way out here to the west. it is going to take a while to get here and by the way, you're seeing snow and really nasty stuff out over the midwest. don't worry. when it gets here, it is too warm. it is going to be just in the form of rain. this morning, a lot of clouds, maybe a spot of drizzle here or there and then we start to see reinforcements coming in with steadier rain.
