kinds of things; but you think about the way that the greater boston area is changing-- international tourism, people expect to be out later-- so i think there should be some consideration given. but i think this will be through an effort by the legislature and then ultimately in our case at the local level in the city of everett. janet: you are going to be a part of that fight. desalvio: we'll be a part of that discussion, absolutely. doug: catch "on the record" this morning at 11:00 right here on channel 5 followed by "matter of fact" with fernando espuelas. this week's guest is democratic caucus chair xavier beccera. still ahead, a bizarre appearance from a troubled former c.e.o. sera: the latest misstep by the man now called the most hated in america. doug: she's a young woman who's had a difficult home life. but that's not keeping her from being a success at school. you'll meet this week's a-plus just ahead on the eyeopener. danielle: winter makes an appearance today but it's not

for our average high temperature. so we will take the december warmth. wicked be near record highs for christmas eve. more about that in just a second. look over boston right now. a gorgeous shot. a lot of sunshine today. you can thank high pressure for that. but it's cold. 36 degrees especially with that wind. it's been out of the west at about 10-15. it makes it feel more like about 29 in boston. that's that wind chill value, what you dress for. the winds are anywhere from 10-20 right now. but as we go through the afternoon, they should back down , and that will allow it to not feel as cold as yesterday. but look at your high temperatures. upper 30's, low 40's for highs. with lots of sunshine. and tonight we're going to see more clouds. temperatures drop back into the 20's in the merrimack valley. upper 20's in worcester. low 30's in boston. low to mid 30's on parts of the south shore, the cape and the islands. so high pressure dominates our
9:37 am
and then as we head towards tomorrow, we're going to watch this warm front. you see this area of low pressure here. this is our next big weather maker. what it's going to do is bring in clouds, bring in warmer air and bring in very strong winds. you're going to feel them tomorrow out of the south and west at 10-20 miles an hour sustained. gusts over 30. in fact, we could be talking about a potential wind advisory for the south shore, the cape and the islands but it's a warming wind so take a look. we're in the upper 40's in worcester. low 50's in boston and even the mid 50's down along parts of the south shore. now this warm front brings in clouds through the afternoon. maybe one or two showers. i think the best bet for the shower activity though is up in northern new england for tomorrow. you will expect windy conditions and warm conditions. once we get towards tuesday, watch what happens. we have a cold front coming across. and that means, i think, we will see more widespread shower activity everywhere tuesday

that will knock temperatures back on wednesday slight slee cooler but still pretty mild for this time of year. we could really use that rain down over ten inches for the year now in boston. so rain chances on the way up wednesday as well as on thursday. for christmas eve. but we are drying out as we get towards christmas day. i do want to talk about that warm air in place on christmas eve. right now i'm forecasting to beat record temperatures and go to 61 in worcester and 63 in boston. if we do that, that would be new records. behind this, we turn a little for christmas. lots of sunshine. i can't believe we're talking about the holidays with high 50's. doug and sera. doug: danielle, that's a-plus right there. a-plus takes us to leicester high school and a young woman who lost her mom at age of six and moved from family member to family member. sera: but she isn't letting an unstable home life hold her back from succeeding. the eyeopener's antoinette

good chances for afternoon showers as we head towards wednesday. we're going to see heavier rain come in wednesday night into thursday. that's associated with a warm front and cold front that's also going to bring in much warmer air for christmas eve. we're talking record-breaking warmth potentially. looks that way at least right now. 63 degrees on christmas eve. and 64 on christmas day. still not that bad. sera: that will be a great day. you can go out for a walk after your big meal. doug: i'm thinking about the ice sculptures for first night. will it be cold enough for those at all. danielle: it looks like it may get colder closer to that time. doug: thank you very much for joining us on this sunday morning. george stephanapolous "this week" is next. sera: happy sunday, everyone. >> this is an editorial by wcvb-tv channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. bill fine: in just the few weeks since governor baker's pledge of much better service on the mbta, substantial problems are piling up.

with more limited seats than contracted for; a runaway train barreled down the red line; also, what looms as a mistake in our mind, the elimination of late night "t" service; and on top of all those issues, some expansion plans are being scrapped, changed, or potentially eliminated altogether. even a lack of snow can't help stem the tide of bad news. all of this indicates commuters are unlikely to see a well oiled, much-improved operation in the months ahead. we remain hopeful; but as we have said before, hope is not a strategy. the governor may take a hit on "t" issues, but he deserves more cooperation from the legislature and the medical community on his plans to deal with the opioid crisis. a public service campaign begun last summer has substantially increased awareness of the staggering extent of the problem, but the surge of abuse has not diminished. baker's plan to limit initial prescriptions of opioids to just a 72-hour supply for new patients is one of many ideas worthy of discussion.
9:48 am
lawmakers and doctors was unfavorable to that drastic step. but surely there is a middle ground between 72 hours and the frequent over-prescription of 30 to 90 days' worth of pills-- medication that often goes unused and is a potential source of supply for addicts whose growing number includes those patients baker is seeking to protect. the governor has signaled a strong willingness to discuss his proposal with all stakeholders and has an open mind to a mutually agreeable solution. he shouldn't be left hanging. this ongoing and still growing crisis demands forceful and imaginative action. >> honored as the nation's best
