his quick moves to save them from a fire, a story first on 5 good morning, i'm randy price. emily: and i'm emily riemer with cindy fitzgibbon. . we're starting our first official day of winter in the 50's. cindy: feels like it is spring outside. winter financially arrived overnight just before midnight. here we are, first morning of winter. average high is 39 this time of year. we should be in the mid 20's. look at these temperatures waking up in the lower 50's now. boston, beverley, marshfield mid 50's on the cape. west of town, 40's showing up from lawrence back to worcester. 34 one of the colder spots in nashua, but everybody is above freezing. off to the south, this whole area of rain is working in our direction and we're going to start to get in on some showers by 8:00 this morning and then that rain expands through your

mcgrath's rented white chevy in the drive thru of a mcdonald's in raynham. she was arrested the kids returned to their relieved father. >> it is just an overwhelming feeling. now we have christmas coming up. it is going to be a great christmas. reid:it's not clear where mcgrath may have been headed with the kids. she's being held on $10,000 bail. she'll be arraigned in wareham district court later this morning. emily: breaking overnight, a major mess is still being cleaned up in plymouth. this is new video this morning as crews work to remove a toppled crane that crushed a home splitting the roof. a young girl inside when it happened. she's ok but this morning the investigation into how this happened is just getting underway. the foreman had hired a crane to trim the trees around their lisa avenue home. but as it was lifting one of

17-year-old rebecca was in the kitchen when it happened. >> it sounded like a tree had fallen on the floor. when i looked up at the ceiling, i saw damage. brought in to right the toppled one but osha quickly said that was unsafe. larger cranes were needed to do the job. randy: sentencing will be handed down today for the man who loaned a gun to the boston marathon bombers. stephen silva pleaded guilty to drug and gun charges. during the marathon attack trial, he told the court he gave a gun to dzhokhar tsarnaev two months before the bombings. prosecutors say that gun was later used to murder mit police officer sean collier days after the attack. all police officers in methuen will soon be wearing body cameras. last night, the city council voted to approve funding to extend a pilot program launched back in june. newscenter 5 went along with

the department will now begin the process of training officers on how to use and wear the cameras. the program is expected to be in place in february. right now, schools in nashua are getting ready to reopen. a threatening email forced all the city's schools to shut down yesterday. police say it was detailed and directed at students at the district's two high schools. a day long search at those schools turned up nothing. there have been no arrests but the investigation continues. >> donald trump is on video and isis is using him on the video to recruit! and it turned out to be a lie. she is a liar. emily: this morning the war of words is escalating between donald trump and hillary clinton. right now neither front-runner is giving an inch. the eye's erika tarantal is here with the latest skirmish.

previous administration were sound. and by the way, i don't think anybody working on the current project does either. >> the two governors also exchanged shots over the department of children and families. baker saying patrick disagreed that there were systematic issues with the agency. but baker admits he did hire the same woman to fix the agency that patrick suggested. emily: there will be no charges in the jailhouse death of a texas woman. sandra bland was arrested last summer after making an improper lane change. the traffic stop was captured on a cruiser dashcam. she was charged with assault after things quickly escalated. bland couldn't make bail and was found hanging in her jail cell. a grand jury did not indict anyone at the jail over her treatment. but they'll return next month to consider charges against the arresting officer. a new york city police detective has been identified as one of the six americans killed in a suicide attack in afghanistan. detective joseph lemm was serving with the u.s. air national guard. the attack happened in a village

facing murder charges. one person was killed and dozens more were injured in the crash. police say holloway was homeless, out of money and sleeping in her car with her 3-year-old daughter. it's unclear why she allegedly drove into the crowd. but police say surveillance footage shows she did it on purpose. emily: new trouble right now for chipotle. the centers for disease control say they are looking into 5 more cases of food-borne illness linked to the mexican food chain. the cdc says the recent cases appear to have been caused by a different bacteria, than the e-coli outbreak. those cases are also unrelated to the norovirus outbreak at a chipotle in boston. new cases have popped up in oklahoma, kansas, and north dakota. economic headlines this tuesday, asian stocks mostly flat overnight as investors wait for more signs of potential economic growth in china. right now u.s. stock futures are lower. wall street will be watching for new data on home sales

by up to 10%, not just next july but every two years going forward. the t hasn't formally submitted a rate hike proposal but this certainly gives riders an idea of where the cash-strapped agency is headed. just yesterday, governor baker told our janet wu he's not sold on the idea of fare hikes. yet. >> is it possible in year two of your administration we might see a fare hike? >> i'm not going to comment on that because the fiscal management board still has a lot of work to do on that. >> the vote by the t board came shortly after transportation officials revealed nearly a quarter of mbta employees will make more than $100,000 this year. that includes overtime and pay raises. an audit on that has now been requested. emily: todd, thank you. 5 investigates looking into potential terrorist targets in our region and the status of security. experts say the rail system is often overlooked. 5 investigates met up with armed homeland security officers making an unannounced visit at south station. they're part of what's called a viper team, working with amtrak

looking for suspicious behavior and explosives. their periodic operations are one method of protection, but analysts say our rail system is highly vunerable. the entire amtrak system encompasses more than 21,000 miles of unprotected tracks. the rail line between boston and washington dc, the northeast corridor, carries the majority of amtrak's passengers. >> if the terrorists were trying to disrupt and "terrorize" that would be a prime target of those individuals. emily: at south station, there aren't baggage checks for amtrak passengers. they don't have to show id to board, just a ticket. amtrak says it teams up with local police to help with security. randy: right now, a woman accused of murdering a baby is out on bail. the eye's erika tarantal joins us with the revision that let her go free. erika: that revision coming from the state medical examiner's office.

a year that office has revised a finding of shaken baby syndrome. pallavi macharla was charged with killing a neighbor's baby girl in burlington last year. but last week, the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on the 6-month-old revised her ruling. that allowed macharla to be released on bail. prosecutors are still pursuing murder charges against her. earlier this year prosecutors dropped murder charges against nanny aisling brady mccarthy after the medical examiner's office revised their finding that the cambridge child in her care died of abuse. randy? randy: a health issue made worse by the warm winter. emily: why some people would actually get some relief from the cold if it ever came and a man traveling from haiti to boston for some life-saving surgery. the result when a tumor was removed from his face. randy: a announcement that could

today for the danvers teenager, convicted in the murder and rape of his high school math teacher. lawyers for philip chism will meet with prosecutors and the judge to discuss the teen's sentence. chism was convicted last week in the 2013 death of colleen ritzer. the 16-year-old faces life in prison, but could be eligible for parole after 15, because he was a juvenile at the time. a life-saving overdose drug is now even more widely available in new hampshire. governor maggie hassan announced yesterday that the state has written a universal prescription, for anyone looking to purchase narcan. the drug can reverse the effects of an overdose, if administered within a certain time frame. now, anyone can buy the drug through a rite aid pharmacist under this new error. emily: 11 barbershops have been shut down by lowell city inspectors, over a slew of violations. the crackdown follows complaints made to city leaders and police. some shops were shut down for failure to stay up-date on business licenses.
