good morning, i'm antoinette antonio. emily is off this morning. randy: and i'm randy price with danielle vollmar. in for cindy. quite a bit of rain overnight. danielle: quite a bit. impressive totals, over two inches in some spots. some thunderstorm activity. it is christmas eve. a couple of cities reaching up to near an inch of rain on the cape. some locations picking up two to 2 1/2 inches of rain from some of these heavy downpours and thunderstorms that rolled on in last night and early this morning. now right now, just a couple of light showers out there to contend with. you can see all the way through worcester moving into metrowest and through southern new hampshire towards portsmouth. the other big story this morning is that fog. there is going to be some low level fog, especially in nantucket back through boston, worcester and portsmouth.

it continues downtown boston. only 10 minutes between braintree and downtown boston. randy: right now, extreme weather across the country. intense flooding across kansas. and several tornadoes, touching down in mississippi. the death toll from those storms has gone up in the overnight hours. antoinette: the eyeopener's doug meehan is tracking new information as it comes in. doug: this morning at least eight people are dead in the southern part of the country, as damage reports come in overnight. three people were killed in mississippi, including a 7-year-old boy. this funnel cloud, on the ground there for at least ten minutes, tearing through homes, and claiming lives. in arkansas, torrential rain and 60-mile and hour winds brought down this tree, killing an 18-year-old, and trapping a baby, who was later pulled to safety. streets flooded in alabama and southern indiana, as storms moved through, just two days before christmas. >> going to show us -- some how, some way. i can't see it right now, but i

i promise. randy: tough to see now. crews are now searching for areas. for. we'll bring you new information as we get it. antoinette? right now, a chipotle in boston after an illness forced it to shut down. nearly 150 people sickened in a norovirus outbreak. the eye's kelley tuthill is live at the restaurant in brighton, with how customers are reacting to the clean bill of health. reporter: employees here are ready to get back to work. the restaurant expected to open its doors this morning. that's more than two weeks after the cleveland circle location was closed. about 140 people, most of them boston college students, became sick after eating here. city inspectors say the entire restaurant has been disinfected but loyal customers aren't running back too soon.

i'm not sure if i'm going to go back. >> corners were cut somewhere. i have a feeling this is going to be it for them. reporter: the employee who sparked the sickness was fired, as was the manager who asked the worker to finish his shift. it's been a tough year for the company over 50 customers getting sick with e-coli at nearly a dozen locations around the country. chipotle is now making changes to the way it prepares food. antoinette: right now a woman is suffering serious injuries after she was struck by a car in holliston. the 57-year-old was struck around 5:00 last night along washington street. the driver, a 53-year-old man from florida, did stay at the scene. no word on any charges. randy: u.s. marshals are tying a stash of cash found in safe deposit boxes state representative from embezzlement. investigators say john george attempted to hide $1 million in

the bills were found tied in small bundles, and stuffed into over-sized safe deposit boxes. the 69-year-old is currently serving a six-year prison sentence. george was ordered to pay nearly $700,000 in restitution, but claimed under oath that he had less than 190,000 in assets. randy: right now the death of a teenage prisoner is under investigation. the 18-year-old was found hanging in his cell at the essex county correctional facility last night. anfelnin feliz, of lawrence, was awaiting trial on armed robbery and other charges. antoinette: new hampshire's state prison system is facing a lawsuit over holiday cards. prison officials banned cards and drawings after finding prescription drugs smuggled underneath stamps or stickers and even smeared between layers of crayon drawings. now the aclu is suing on behalf of an inmate whose 3-year-old son sent him a thanksgiving card. security is tantamount for us and trying to keep contra band out of the prison is really a major priority for us on a daily

rain fell last night in marion, mass. we saw up to an inch in auburn, massachusetts. we're seeing showers hugging the coast, the cape. we're young to have low level fog. by lunchtime, a couple of breaks in the cloud deck. if we get those breaks of sunshine, we will definitely exceed 70 in many spots. if we don't get many breaks, it looks like some clouds, along the cape and then we'll start to clear out later this evening and we will have some fog around. the high temperatures in the upper 60's. it is a warm christmas eve and a warm christmas eve night as well. upper 40's, low 50's and for christmas day. look at these temperatures. the mid to upper 50's. low 60's and that continues. we will cool down on saturday. still 48 degrees.

china as a firefighter is forced burning building. take a look. the firefighter was responding to a blaze in a second floor apartment. he was lowering a hose when his suit caught fire. he attempted to slide down a pipe,but it broke,sending him crashing to the ground,causing only minor injuries. antoinette: economic headlines this thursday morning, staples is fighting back as the federal trade commission tries to block its merger with rival office depot. the framingham-based chain says the ftc is overstating how fiercely the two companies compete saying there is plenty of other competition in the marketplace. the federal agency won an injunction to block the merger earlier this month. antoinette: asian markets slipped overnight after an initial surge thanks to plunging oil prices. wall street will be watching for that weekly jobs snapshot on this final day of trading before the christmas holiday. right now stock futures are lower.

in 2011 another driver tied down the throttle and was caught by a passenger. a similar incident happened in 1999. as for the incident two weeks ago, the investigation says the operator tied down the throttle to disable the dead man's switch. when vazquez stepped off the train to deal with a signal failure, the train took off with without him blowing through four stops with more than 50 passengers onboard. vazquez has since been fired. randy: right now, police in salem are trying to track down two christmas thieves. they say a man and woman stole presents, intended for toys for tots. the couple walked into the sex offender registry board last week, without identification, and made off with $1,000 worth of presents. police are asking anyone with

give them a call. randy: boston police are continuing to investigate a double shooting in jamaica plain. it happened at the boston housing authority complex on centre street. the two male victims are in their 30's and 40's. one was shot in the shoulder, the other in the thigh. they were found in the hallway of the building, on two different stair landings. both are expected to survive. the commissioner says it does not look like the shooting is gang-related. antoinette: police confiscate more than 100 firearms in a raid in warren. 45-year-old daniel peristere was arrested at his reed street home on tuesday. police say he made threatening comments about police. officers seized firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. peristere faces several charges for possessing firearms without a license. right now a jogger is injured after being hit by a car in hanson. it happened on winter street last night. the driver also hit a utility pole which snapped causing power outages in the area.

the first time mbta operators have tampered with throttle controls. the globe reports that two other t operators have been disciplined for the practice over the past 16 years. as for the incident two weeks ago, the preliminary investigation finds that the operator, david vasquez, tied down the throttle, thus overriding the dead man's switch. the train took off without him, blowing through four stops with more than 50 passengers on board. vasquez has since been fired. antoinette: thank you. breaking news now. belgian authorities say they have arrested a ninth suspect linked to the deadly paris terror attacks. federal authorities say a belgian-born citizen who had been in contact with the suspected ringleader's cousin was arrested tuesday. he is being held on charges of taking part in a terrorist group and terrorist murders. randy: a woman is suffering serious injuries after she was struck by a car in holliston. the 57-year-old was struck around 5 o'clock last night, along washington street.

both men appeared to be unhurt, but were taken to a hospital to be evaluated. randy: u.s. senators are urging federal regulators to allow partially refilling opioid prescriptions. massachusetts senators elizabeth warren and ed markey are strong proponents behind the push to curb the opioid epidemic. they say a partial re-fill will let patients work to control the pain, while limiting access to unnecessary medication. while federal law doesn't specifically ban the practice, some states remain unclear on the clarity of the law. antoinette: two police officers are hospitalized after they were shot during a nine-hour standoff in texas. odessa, after the man barricaded himself in an apartment. they say he had shot two officers, who were trying to the officers are listed in fair condition. randy: the hyatt hotel chain is confirming it recently found malicious software on the computer system that processes
