erika: welcome back. such a mild christmas. welcome back to reality tomorrow. cindy: and two problems. we haven't had snow all season yet. this one is coming during the morning commute. i think it's just going to be bad timing. doug: is there hope here? cindy: yes, there is. doug: it's vacation week. cindy: the big yellow school buses not on the road. not as many commuting tomorrow morning. for those who are, we have a winter weather advisory. it gets started at 8:00 tonight. it is with us through the midday hours tomorrow. that's when we'll see the snow transition on over to ice. and the morning commute is really the one of concern. this storm still pretty far away. but it's severe weather. these are tornado watch boxes down near the gulf coast this morning. on the northwestern side of this storm, there is a wintery side with some snow. for us, that snow is going to begin right around or just after midnight. and then during the morning commute tomorrow, around 8:00 in
4:42 am
morning, 10:00 a.m., snow is going to start to change over to sleet and ice and eventually go over to rain in the afternoon near the coastline but over the interior there could be a prolonged period of some icing. so there's a mess on the way for tomorrow. starting out this morning mostly in the lower 30's, even closer to 40 on the cape right now. but there is colder air sitting just to our north. we've got high pressure nosing out of canada, feeding down that colder air. so starting out dry certainly with some patchy clouds but we are going to see sunshine kind of battle against that northerly flow of colder air. notice throughout the day, temperatures change very, very little. so it is going to be a colder feeling day. temperatures holding in the low to mid 30's. with that northerly wind at about 10-20 miles per hour, a bit of a wind chill will be out there over the course of the day. we'll watch our storm approach us as we get toward the late afternoon and evening hours. expect thickening cloud cover. during the overnight hours, that's when the snow starts to break out around midnight, 2:00 in the morning.
4:43 am
north of the mass pike. and then our winds are going to come in off the water. so pretty quickly we are going to see a transition down along the south coast and the cape over to some rain, maybe freezing rain initially. then look what happens as we get deeper into the morning hours. by 9:00 a.m., snow is hanging on only, i think, up through the north shore, the merrimack valley and southern new hampshire. otherwise, we're start to go see that changeover initially to some sleet and then eventually in freezing rain. so we can push those surface temperatures up over 32 degrees. that will happen around the boston area out to around 128 but once you get beyond 495 notice how as we get towards lunchtime and into part of the afternoon, we may hang on to a little bit of freezing rain. warm enough that it's falling as rain but as it hits the colder surfaces could be icing even into the afternoon hour. not a lot of snow with this. i think it's a quick burst initially of one to maybe up to three inches of snow for a lot of us. a little less to the south. once you get toward the route 2 corridor up into southern new hampshire, there could be a
4:44 am
inches of snow, four inches locally up to five so that's where the heaviest snow will be. look what happens though as we get into the afternoon. temperatures near the coastline up into the 40's but over the interior, that is where we're going to hover in the lower 30's. so this is where we have the biggest concerns for some icing out that way. we get beyond this system on tuesday. and things actually break for us on wednesday. but by the end of the day another system coming at us. that one could bring in rain in the evening hours towards early thursday. that's it. we start off the new year on friday with a chilly but dry conditions. notice temperatures right through next weekend going to be more seasonal. it looks like the warm weather party is is coming to an end. abruptly. tomorrow morning a big dose of reality out the door. olessa: ring in the new year with a little bit of winter finally. so far it's a quiet start on the roads this morning. a live look outside at the zakim and the leverett connector. typically we see that overnight construction on this camera shot. not today. you're in good shape. it is a vacation week for many.
