a new experience for this grandmother is going viral this morning. her step into virtual reality i don't know what was on that. i'd like to know what it was. good morning, i'm doug meehan. cindy fitzgibbon. randy and emily are off today. coming. cindy: they must have heard. tomorrow i think we are going to be dealing with our first snow of the season. not a lot. but bad timing with the morning commute. fortunately if you're getting ready to head out the door this morning, things are pretty quiet. just a little chill in the air. this is what it feels like out there right now. wind chills out the door in the 20's. actual temperatures in the low to mid 30's. 32 worcester. 34 boston. a little closer to 40 degrees down on the cape this morning. just a few patchy clouds here and there. we've got a big area of high pressure nosing out of canada. the flow around that high draining down some colder air so even though we're starting out in the lower 30's, temperatures

notice despite sunshine by lunchtime we're still about 33 degrees. and that's where we hold into the afternoon. so it's a chillier day overall. but we are going to be watching the storm down on the south. this will increase the clouds late in the day i expect snow to break out just after midnight tonight. winter weather advise reup for this storm. through the morning commute tomorrow, snow and ice going to make for slippery travel. it looks like we do change over to some of that icing and sleet by about 10:00 tomorrow morning. talk about how much snow you can expect coming up. but right now let's get you out to the roads and see what we're dealing with out there this morning. good morning, olessa. kelley: not a whole lot. if you're heading out the door right now a live look at the pike by allston/brighton eastbound moving to the top of the screen. let's go to the maps and see the rest of the ride which also looks nice and light. no problems getting into boston. no construction to contend with right now. south of town an accident-free start. 24 looking good. 95 as well. route 3 no problems. the pike and route 9 getting by at the speed limit this morning. and so far it's a quiet start. 9 south, route 3 out of chelmsford. route 1 also wide open.

the morning on schedule. doug. doug: thanks, olessa. breaking overnight. police are searching for the driver who slammed right into a cafe in lynn. we're told it started with a traffic stop for a report of a stolen vehicle. the driver took off but the s.u.v. kept going crashing through the wall of the walnut street cafe. no one was hurt. right now police are searching for the driver who ran a woman down and just took off. erika: the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is live in malden with what we know at this hour. antoinette? antoinette: and erika, police investigation, but what we do know is that the victim was a woman in her 70's. she was hit while she was trying to cross this street right here in this crosswalk. this all happened around 8:00 last night here on pleasant street in malden. the victim was taken to melrose-wakefield hospital with life-threatening injuries. as for that driver, police will only say that a dark-colored area. no word this morning on any arrests or any possible suspects

malden police are asking anyone who knows any information about this hit-and-run crash to give them a call. we're live in malden this morning, antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> oh, my god! (siren) that's a tornado. erika: you can just hear the terror in that woman's voice. this morning, nine tornadoes are confirmed in texas wreaking havoc on the state. at least eleven people are dead in that state alone. communities just in ruins. the christmas twisters marched across the texas landscape. in the neighborhood of row let, they tossed trucks and tore trees from the earth. the twister that hit gar hand texas was clocked as an ef-4. >> you can see the transformers blowing up. erika: the survivors count themselves luckily. >> we're grateful we're all safe. all this can be replaced. erika: in missouri flooding like this led to several deaths and

state of emergency sunday night. in oklahoma, west texas, and new mexico, snow created whiteout conditions on the roads. >> just last week it was 60 degrees in rosswell. today everything is covered in snow. erika: trucks out of control rest in the snow bank. more than 20 motorists were stranded on i40 between amarillo and the new mexico border. in western oklahoma, the national guard has been deployed to help people stranded. all of this weather impacting air travel to more than a thousand flights in the u.s. canceled. more than 4,000 delayed. >> i would call it living hell. erika: that winter weather is on the move. there's a winter storm warning in chicago. we will get a taste of it tomorrow as cindy has been reporting. she'll break down the impact and the timing in just a few minutes. doug: a little closer to home. quincy credit union customers are expecting their debit accounts to work today. they were shut down yesterday because of fraudulent activity; others were drained. the bank c.e.o. says, in all, at

cards may have been compromised. bank employees worked late last night trying to resolve the issue by taking special precautions. those included putting restrictions on debit card and a.t.m. use and blocking compromised cards. the bank thinks a.t.m. skimmers stole the information locally. then counterfeit cards were sold in new york. >> i guess some of the larger banks are probably a bigger target. maybe you think a small-town credit union probably isn't on the radar but obviously, you know, nobody is too small. doug: the bank posted updates on facebook all day yesterday, but some customers say they wish they'd been called. now customers are being encouraged to check for suspicious activity on their accounts. they're also being reminded that those accounts are insured and money from fraudulent transactions will be returned. >> she had nothing to do with this. she was just answering the door for the police.

a woman is accidentally shot and killed by police. officers were responding to a domestic call saturday when 55-year-old neighbor bettie jones was shot by mistake. the city's embattled mayor is asking the entire police department to review crisis training in the wake of the killing. right now boston police are searching for suspect after a teenager was stabbed near the jackson square "t" station in mattapan. orange line service was suspended because of the investigation. the victim is expected to survive. back in october another teenager was stabbed to death at that same station. the mbta promised increased security after 17-year-old mason raymond was killed during a fight with another teen. doug: right now boston police are investigating a shooting on rosewood street in mattapan. it happened around 8:30 last night. a man was hit but he is expected to recover. two people were shot on that same street last january. a setback this morning for a teenager shot in dorchester on saturday. his uncle tells "the herald" doctors did not remove a bullet from the boy's leg for fear he'd bleed out.

whoever shot the 14-year-old on stratton street. the boy says he and a friend were walking when they were approached by a man and woman, and things got physical. erika: just about 5:08. commitment 2016. donald trump is headed back to new hampshire tonight. the g.o.p. frontrunner will hold a rally at pennichuck middle school in nashua. that's at 7:00 p.m. the latest polls show trump ahead of the pack with just six weeks to go before the new hampshire primary. republican jeb bush will also be in the granite state this week. he heads to peterborough and hillary clinton is looking to close the gap in new hampshire making stops in portsmouth and berlin on tuesday. are remembering a man who had a huge impact on the team's world series dreams in 1986. announcer: to left field. deep and down he goes and he's back. it's gone!

saying, you know, i wish we had some snow on christmas. cindy: there were quite a few people saying that. doug: i would imagine. cindy: it looks like we've got winter weather on the way. you can see that storm spinning up out of texas. severe weather out ahead of it. snow on the backside. it will bring us a taste of wintery weather here tomorrow morning. we've got a winter weather advisory in effect. it looks like snowy vent ally changing to ice and rain. it is really going to make for a slippery tuesday morning commute. here are the highlights in terms of the snow. it begins just after midnight. it's going to snow through the overnight hours into tomorrow morning but between 8:00 and 10:00 tomorrow morning, we're going to watch that snow start to change over to sleet and ice and eventually it goes to rain. in fact by noontime it's going to be raining in a lot of spots especially near the coastline but over the interior sleet freezing rain may hang on into the afternoon. that's why the set-up is a slippery one tomorrow. you can see the temperatures this morning hovering very close to the freezing mark. 32 in worcester. 33 up in beverly.

mid to upper 30's for you on the cape this morning but look to the north. see how it's only 14 in ottawa? this cold air is draining down around high pressure. so despite the fact that we're going to have some sunshine today, this colder air will continue to brain on down. just a few patchy clouds out there this morning. i think we are going to be looking at a decent amount of sunshine here throughout the day with afternoon clouds starting to thicken up. look at this. the wind chills today are going to hold in the 20's all day long as those northerly winds are going to be kind of kicking up throughout the day. they're going to hold the temperatures fairly steady. what you see is what you get for the temperatures. don't expect them to budge much at all here over the course of the day. all the while we've got that cold air in place. we've got our storms starting to lift north ward in our direction. daylight hours today. just after midnight notice how out. by this time tomorrow morning, i think a lot of us are going to be seeing the snow. so the morning commute tomorrow at 6:00 a.m., snow for a lot of us. a couple of inches likely on the

to the south we're start to go see that warmer air invade first at higher levels of the atmosphere so we're starting to change that snow over to sleet. with an easterly wind places like the south coast and the cape may change over pretty quickly to some rainfall. in fact by about 9:00 tomorrow morning, i think it's raining for you on the south coast and the cape. we're start to go see that mix around the boston area. snow hanging on on the north shore, the merrimack valley, southern new hampshire. but by noontime, i think we have transitioned over to plain old rain across a lot of eastern-most massachusetts. outside of 495 we may hang on that freezing rain even on into the afternoon. so in terms of the snow, it's not a lot. one to maybe up to three inches of snow. once you get out toward the worcester area closer to an inch in boston, under an inch, i think, across much of the south shore. once you get north of the route 2 corridor into southern new hampshire, we could see more than three inches of snow. locally even up to five. afternoon.

so far we are doing just fine. trains and buses starting the morning on sced. doug: thanks, olessa. 5 investigates putting the the test and finding most cities and towns getting a failing grade. erika: our mike beaudet teamed up with "the boston globe" and northeastern university for what's believed to be the largest test of its kind ever conducted in massachusetts. journalism class at northeastern average citizens looking for public records. they asked every city and town in the state for a copy of their payroll and the police department's policy on when officers can use their weapons. state law requires a meaningful response within 10 days. but the majority of the state's 351 cities and towns failed that test, responding either late or not at all during the 40-day test. >> are you ignoring our public records request? >> no. here. here. here's all the information right here. in here.

>> all payroll. >> it seems like you could have just mailed this off back then. >> i had no time to do it. erika: a group representing cities and towns says nobody is trying to hide information but that public records requests can be too much work. but others say the findings show that the public records law, which hasn't been updated in 42 years, needs some chnages. >> are you surprised by our results in. >> well, i'm disappointed to hear these results, but unfortunately i'm really not surprised. >> is reform needed? >> reform in my opinion is definitely needed. erika: secretary of state bill galvin is joining senator lewis in calling for changes, telling "5 investigates" this audit proves reforms are needed to address fees, enforcement, and timeliness of responses. doug: blue cross/blue shield of offering new benefits for end-of-life care on january 1. the state's largest insurer is set to expand options for patients including providing more choices beyond-hospital care.

the calm before our first taste of winter. good morning, everyone. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm erika tarantal. doug: and i'm doug meehan. cindy and olessa will be very busy tomorrow. yes? olessa: we had a nice break. cindy: this isn't going to be a big storm. just a taste but the timing is not good tomorrow morning. you know, the kids are on vacation. not as many people are going to be dealing with it. winter weather advisory up starting tonight through midday tomorrow. snow to start. then it changes over to ice and eventually rain. looks like a mess on the way tomorrow. it's chilly out there this morning. this is what it feels like out the door. so you want to dress for december. actual winter is what it feels like out there this morning. wind chill s are in the 20's. temperatures running in the low to mid 30's but throughout the day temperatures go in where. they'll hold steady all day long despite the fact that there's a little bit of sunshine. that northerly wind 10-20 miles an hour going to keep those wind chills in the 20's all day.

actually mother and daughter. police say they claimed that they saw a man throw a baby into the merrimack river. while this all happened on the night of christmas eve. the report prompted a massive search including a helicopter and dive team. police say holy and christine fowler who live near the river reported seeing a man on the phone along the bridge throw a baby into the water and then run away. the search was called off after interviews with the two women revealed that it had been a hoax. now it is still unknown why the two women made up the story. we could learn more about that at the arraignment today. the fowlers say face charges including misleading a police investigation as well as filing a false report. live in haverill, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: thank you. the trial of a suspected kidnapper is being pushed back to the summer. nathaniel kibby's trial is now it had originally been planned the new hampshire man is accused

captive for eight months. he faces more than 200 charges and could go away for life, if convicted. new this morning. a tip in an infamous art heist led the f.b.i. to the suffolk downs race track in east boston. "the globe" reports agents conducted a day-long search back in september. investigators checked out the barns and parts of the grandstand that have been closed for years. but they didn't find anything. they were looking for 13 masterpieces stolen from boston's isabella stewart gardner museum in the 1990's. doug: the chipotle restaurant where more than one hundred people got sick is back in but getting back to full speed is slow going. sunday was a quiet day for the cleveland circle locatoin. the restaurant was shut down and scrubbed clean. because of the suspended subject to more frequent inspections. most restaurants are inspected >> we'll do spot

unannounced and make sure things are right. they are now scheduled now for inspections every three months. we'll do this for six months to a year. doug: the commissioner has such faith in the inspection system, he says he plans to have lunch there today. some portsmouth residents who drank contaminated well water may have to wait until april to get their lab results. officials shut down the haven well at the former pease air force base last year after high levels of a chemical were found. the state says more than a thousand people got their blood tested after drinking the water. the first results should start going out in the mail next month. erika: new this morning. boston's public works department has already spent its entire overtime budget mostly on special events. a "herald" review found that city employees were paid more than $1.3 million in overtime with only 45 percent of it going to repair and infrastructure work. a chunk of $300,000 went to staffing special events, such as parades and festivals. the public works commissioner

tomorrow afternoon. but inside of 495 we go to all rain tomorrow afternoon. here's the storm right now. it's going to come at us during the overnight hours. so out ahead of the it today, we're dry. but high pressure to the north is just raining down much colder air from canada. so 34 degrees in boston right now. we're at 32 worcester. we've got lower 0's up through the merrimack valley. mid to upper 30's on the cape. but look at the high temperatures this afternoon. these look familiar? pretty much where we are right now. the temperatures go nowhere today despite the fact that we are going to have a little bit of sunshine. 10-20 miles per hour, wind chills all day long they're going to hold in the 20's so do make sure you are dressed for it. we'll watch this storm come at us. the clouds do thicken up late in the day but it's dry into the evening hours. there you see around midnight or across the area. it is going to snow for several hours through about 6:00 snowing across a good portion of the area but on the south shore, the cape, we're starting to picks with some sleet already. that area of mixing does pivot

the morning. i think we're start to go see that changeover in most areas. still snowing for you on the north shore, the merrimack valley, southern new hampshire. by noontime it is raining i think inside of 495. some of that freezing rain may linger into the afternoon hours outside of 495. so one to three inches of snow a good bit here. boston with those higher amounts out toward the worcester area. a little bit more possible 3-5 inches route 2 on up into southern new hampshire. that wintery mix tomorrow. get a break in the action most of wednesday but another batch of rain with temperatures in the 40's coming at us late in the day. to the roads right now. at least they're dry. olessa: we're doing okay with the exception of one krarn. you can see the heavy volume on the expressway. it is a vacation week so we shouldn't see these many dplais northbound. as you can see that traffic is pretty slow right now by the gas tank. that's because there's an accident as you travel northbound on the expressway. this is by the government center so if you're heading that way, plan accordingly. right now your ride braintree to boston is is almost a half an

besides that we're doing okay. a quiet start as you travel the pike and route 9. so far no delays on 93 south out of methuen. it stays quiet through wilmington all the way down to spot pond and to the leverett connector. trains and buts also running on schedule. erika. erika: thanks so much. breaking overnight: police are searching for the driver who slammed right into a cafe in lynn. we're told it started with a traffic stop for a report of a stolen vehicle. the driver took off but the s.u.v. kept going crashing through the wall of the walnut street cafe. no one was hurt. right now police in malden are searching for a hit-and-run driver. doug: the eye's antoinette antonio is live on the scene with what we know this morning. good morning again, antoinette. antoinette: doug, good morning to you. we know that victim in this hit-and-run was a woman in her 70's. she was hit while trying to cross in this crosswalk. police say that driver just took off. all of this happening last night around 8:00 here on pleasant street in malden. the victim was taken to

life-threatening injuries. as for that driver, police will only say that a dark-colored s.u.v. was seen leaving this area. no word on any arrests or possible suspects in this case. malden police are asking anyone with any information to give them a call. live in malden this morning, antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. sera: a mother and daughter from haverill will face a judge today after claiming they saw a man throw a baby off a bridge into the merrimack river. that report launched a massive search on the night of christmas eve which included a helicopter and dive team. police called off the search because they determined the flame was a hoax. 42-year-old holly fowler and her 23-year-old daughter christine face charges for misleading a police investigation and filing a false report. it is still unclear exactly why they made this alleged hoax. we could learn more about that at the arraignment later today. live in haverill, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5.

at least eleven people are dead after tornadoes sweep across texas. the northern part of the state. damaged in one dallas suburb alone. erika: quincy credit union customers are expecting their they were shut down yesterday because of fraudulent activity; others were drained. the bank c.e.o. says, in all, at least 670 out of some 10,000 cards may have been compromised. there are now special precautions in place including putting restrictions on debit card and a.t.m. use and blocking compromised cards. the bank thinks a.t.m. skimmers stole the information locally. then counterfeit cards were sold in new york. doug: donald trump is headed back to new hampshire tonight. the g.o.p. frontrunner will hold a rally at pennichuck middle school in nashua. that's at 7:00 p.m. the latest polls show trump ahead of the pack with just six weeks to go before the new hampshire primary. a bridgewater man says someone is stealing his trump campaign signs repeatedly.

erika: right now lowell police are searching for the person who attacked a vietnam veteran and robbed him of nearly $2,000. 63-year-old john looney says the money came from his disabled veterans benefits. he was just steps from his home on bridge street when he was attacked from behind on saturday morning. looney was dazed but not seriously hurt. doug: the hunt is on for a pair a scary heist at a worcester police say the armed men burst into mcguire's lounge early sunday morning. they went through the cash register and even fired a round into the ceiling. about a dozen people were inside the bar at the time. no one was hurt. erika: new hampshire state police say they caught this guy driving 108 miles per hour. he was clocked at that speed on saturday night in the white mountains where the speed limit is 55. police also say peter mazzilli admitted there was pot in the car when they pulled him over and added the sports car he was driving was unregistered.

please don't leave me. erika: a mother is demanding the person who shot her one-year-old daughter to turn themselves in. police in north carolina say that baby was injured when someone opened fire outside the apartment complex where she lives. her mother was carrying her at the time. the young girl is still in the hospital. a person connected to the shooting is in custody. doug: a man falls to his death in california. this morning witnesses tell police he was distracted by an electronic device when he walked off san diego's sunset cliffs. the man fell more than 40 feet to the rocks below. the 33-year-old was from indiana. erika: celtics at the garden last night against the knicks. marcus smart was back for the first time in 18 games. he played for 13 minutes and scored half a dozen points. jae crowder managing to turn offense into defense for the c's at one point. carmello anthony brought the knicks within five with five minutes to go. but the c's were too good. 100-91 the final. doug: bruins up in ottawa against the senators. ottawa scores first, but david krejci would come back and tie it for the bruins midway through
