prioritize the storms. mass d.o.t. has a tiered system. five being the most severe in storms. >> we have different systems for one, two, three, four, five and everyone knows knows what to do. none of that was in place last year. reporter: it is based on how much snow is expected to fall and how much is already on the ground and if the temperature will be warm enough to melt the snow. last year's transit headaches caused by the low temperatures created opportunity for the state to make changes with the hope -- >> this year will be smoother. >> we have done a ton of work to prepare for the winter and i anticipate that work will be put to good use starting tonight. reporter: they have created a storm desk. a single location in which the department heads will monitor the storm and manage any changes that need to be made.

phil: there was a dramatic rescue pulling two people out of a burning home. mary is live at the scene. mary? >> they were first on scene at granite street and they pulled a man and older woman from the flames. the woman does have serious injuries and she was rushed to a worcester hospital. the fire chief says those two officers saved her life or at least gave her a fighting chance. she is not out of the woods yet. it was a neighbor who called 9-1-1 to report the flames that appeared to start on the porch of the multi-family apartment house. the fire spread upward and ignited a propane gas grill on the second floor porch. >> the police got here on scene and they made a pretty dramatic rescue. two police officers were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and are being evaluated as we speak. >> as many as eight people live here, but the two victims

at the time a woman is in hour. the state police fire marshall's office is here on scene, but no ruling on a possible cause live in webster, wcvb newscenter 5. phil: boston police and the fbi are investigating an anonymous phone threat before first night in the city. todd is live in copley square with more on that. todd? reporter: phil, we know the threat that was phoned into new york's 9-1-1 system was later determined to be not credible. still everything is being taken seriously and everyone who comes here for new year's eve for first night is being urnalled to to -- urged to be vigilant. security is tight around the first night celebrations that draw large crowds. this new year's eve will be no different. especially in a year they saw terrorist attacks in paris and san bernadino in addition to mass shootings in the country. there was already a police presence in copley square.

proven when boston police got a call from nypd warning about a nonspecific threat called into new york's 9-1-1 system. it was credible after they rled the caller was not saying the boston area, but bosnia. still governor baker said any threat must be taken seriously. >> our message has been pretty similar to the mess sen we have had -- the message we have had that is constant dialogue and constant conversation and significant presence at any large gathering. >> and there will be a large police presence for first night. as you look behind you can see some of the fencing ready to put in place. the preparations are already taking place here. preparations are taking place as far as the security angle goes. reporting live from copley square, wcvb newscenter 5. jc: the victim was in the

are pursuing a search warrant of the suv that they believe hit her. they confirmed that 71-year-old was killed feet from her home. she heard a loud bang and saw something fly several feet in the air. the driver hesitated and then kept going. >> just took off fairly fast and i thought i saw something fall off the truck and then got out of the car and realized it was a person on the ground. heather:up until a year ago there was a speed bump where it happened, but it was daning cars that travel -- it was damaging cars that traveled too quickly. they are continuing to issue new debit cards to the customers whose accounts were hacked. hackers using a so-called skimmer stole hundreds of debit card numbers and used them to withdraw money from accounts. at least 675 accounts were hacked losing some if not all of their money.

jc: we want to go to weather now. harvey: there is snow and ice and it is a part of this storm before eventually eastern massachusetts winds up with rain. we have a long trip to make before we get there. so after midnight is when we are expecting the snow to break out in eastern massachusetts and from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. we expect it to transition from snow to ice. by noontime it is raining in boston and along the coast but still could be icy. timing will be important. around 2:00 a.m. a high chance the snow is underway. 6:00 a.m. a strong chance of the snow and sleet combined in the region. going to sleet and rain and rain in the afternoon. the official winter weather advisory goes on from 10:00

7:00 p.m. tomorrow for inland areas. but closer to the coastline it will come down at 1:00 a.m. is the current thinking. how about boston. chilly out there now. 29 degrees and haven't seen that in awhile. the north to northeasterly wind. i want you to realize that the ocean is pretty warm. tomorrow when the winds pick up out of the east, that will help the transition to rain in boston as well as warming above. but what will happen first is snow and then the warm air will come in and that's what causes sleet. that's nasty stuff and that will be around for the morning commute. for now we have the cold air really settling in across northern new england and eastern canada in sharp contrast to the warmth that we had. the contrast fuels the fire for a storm. of course it was producing severe weather, but necially we have the -- but initially we have the cold high pressure providing the start to the storm. the radar is starting to show

but it is not reaching the ground yet. we are seeing precipitation in pennsylvania and the western york state and that's the area that should reach us tonight. 24r is a possibility that in that several-hour window of snow that it may snow at a decent clip and it could accumulate a few inches below this area takes over and that's the sleet. the sleet may even cause some additional accumulation before we eventually transfer to rain later tomorrow morning. it may not get quite warm enough for rain, so that may be a freezing rain situation for late tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon and that's where there could be some ice uh creation. in terms of the snow and sleet accumulation my best estimate is about one to three inches in the boston area, but two to five inches north of route

inspired our coach to throw our offense out there to say go and score a touchdown and win the game. i don't blame him. if we were playing better offensively i'm sure his decision would have been different. >> i hope that clears it up. meadow lark lemon, the crown prince of basketball spent most of his career with the harlem globe trotters. here is a guy who went out every day and entertained people. he went across gender and ages and went across races. he left everybody in the arena with a smile on their face inducted to basketball's hall of fame. he passed away in arizona at the age of 83. this guy was something to watch. almost everybody in the planet , he said he played more than 16,000 games and almost everybody has seen the globe trotters play at least once 6789 he was one of the most entertaining of all times. yankees added to their bull pen.

for a left handed flame thrower. it was clocked close to 400 miles an hour and only 66 innings he struck out 116 batters. he has a temper though to and off the field. he is a yankee though next year. the word from the bruins is week to week which sounds more ominous than day-to-day. up in ottawa he was hurt and left the ice. he was being labeled as an upper body injury. today at practice he was even leaving with his arm in a sling. and the bruins are playing at gillette stadium. this was the scene today as they are starting to put the logos down. the lines were down and the painting is being done and the ice will be laid down. the first player is tomorrow afternoon. there are all kinds of events leading up to the winter
