>> wcvb newscenter 5 at 11:00 starts right now. heather: the wintry mix moving area. keeping your commute on track. >> the heroes who dashed into this burning home to get a woman out. >> donald trump's new target in new hampshire tonight. >> a helpless grandfather trapped in this wreck, the quick thinking by his young grand sons to save his life. heather: right now, our first winter storm of the season is moving in massachusetts. j.c.: it's bringing snow, sleet, and rain and the timing is bad news for the honoring commute. harvey leonard is here with what to expect. heather: it's a bit of an adjustment we have to make. we are set to get the storm. it is going to be a mix. it won't be big snow amounts but tricky for that morning commute. temperatures right now, let's check around the region. 31 in boston, right around freezing, along the south shore

north and west. the ocean water temperature is 47. so as the winds become more easterly, low levels will warm along the co-and warmer air coming in at higher levels. before that can happen, we have a winter weather advisory in effect until 1:00, until 7:00 tomorrow evening far to the north and west with an icing potential. radar is picking up some snow. most is not reaching the ground. it is reaching the ground now in north adams in albany, new york and moving eastward. notice you go from snow to ice to rain and that will be the progression here. so let's give you an idea of the timeline. notice it overspreads the region around 1:00. this is a narrow band of light to very light snow. it picks up in intensity. this is all sleet. we're going to have more sleet than we are snow during the course of the morning commute and that could be tricky in itself. by the end of the morning commute, then in boston we're shifting over to rain, but well north and west there could actually be an icing problem of freezing rain afterwards.

minimum one to maximum three of snow and sleet around the boston area, a coating to an inch to the south and perhaps two to five inches maximum north of route 2 to southern new hampshire and southern maine and ski country farther up in morning new england. this area could have the icing situation later tomorrow morning into tomorrow afternoon. a tricky end to this storm, also, i'll be discussing that in a little while. j.c. and phil. j.c.: the first test for the t, the shiny new equipment are supposed to keep train's running. jorge quiroga is live in boston and jorge, some riders are not that optimistic? jorge: certainly not nearly as upbeat as transportation officials are saying they are ready for anything this winter will bring. skeptical riders say actions speak louder than words. at south station, anxious passengers tracking the first winter storm. >> they promise to have it,

mary: a woman who lived on the first floor here is fighting for her life at this hour. she has a fighting chance thanks to the police officers who risked their own lives to save her. >> they didn't hesitate. they went right in. mary: neighbors are talking about the fire that ravaged this apartment house on granite street and the police officers that rushed into the flames to make sure tenants were out. three officers sounded the alarm, two of them pulled an elderly woman from the first floor unit. >> i saw them take the person out of the house and i saw them perform c.p.r. on her. >> they just rushed right in there, no hesitation at all. it was really good to see that. you know how they just do that to save other people. >> luckily they came across her within 10 feet of the door and they were able to get her out. it was difficult on their end and they did a real nice job getting her out. mary: investigators are still pinpointing the cause, but the

building was quickly engulfed. >> we refer to the shingles as gasoline shingles or siding, petroleum products and also on top, we had a propane tank that went off on the second floor. that didn't help. mary: this building now has been condemned. the seven people living in the four apartment units here have lost everything. those two police officers were treated for smoke inhalation and going to be ok. live in webster, i'm mary saladna, wcvb newscenter 5. phil: breaking news, the so-called aflewensa teen is behind bars. they have been caught in mexico outside a popular resort. he made national news back in 2013 after being sentenced to probation for a dunk driving crash that killed four people. his attorneys claimed he suffered from aflewensa, a condition that stems from having wealthy privileged parents who never set limits.

>> you're watching wcvb newscenter 5 at 11:00. j.c.: two new hampshire boys are being called life savers. their grandfather trapped in a truck after a crash. the young boys in the back seat, what they did next may have prevented tragedy. the 64-year-old somehow lost control of his truck on this road. the truck careend 25 yards in the woods after hitting several trees and rocks. temple was hurt and trapped. his 8 and 5-year-old grandsons managed to escape and ran to a nearby home for help. >> i heard them knocking on the

i went out there and his face was all blood and hands were all blood. they were saying, what's the matter? my papa, you got to help him. his head is bleeding and he needs help. >> ray and his son called 911 and followed the boys to the crash scene. >> how are you doing, he was able to communicate and stuff. the first question he asked was how was my grand sons? >> they freed temple from the manglinged wreck. >> they were shaken up but they responded in the appropriate manner and got help on the scene which was as fast as they could. >> the boy's courageous trek through the woods and over a creek likely saved their grandfather's life. >> he was bleeding profusely from the head. his knees were stuck. he couldn't move at all. those kids, they were little. they did a great job. j.c.: the grandfather is hospitalized with serious injuries. his grandsons have a few bumps and bruises but back home with their parents.

hottest toys landing dozens of people in the hospital. hover boards considered a fire hazard are linked to as many as 70 injury reports. most are minor scrapes and bruises, some injuries go as far as broken bones and concussion. if you have one, doctors say take precautions. >> if you're going to use one of these boards, you have to wear a helmet and wear padding on your elbows and knees and wear wrist guards. phil: the consumer product safety commission is expecting the number of wipeout injuries to grow in addition to the wipeouts, they are investigating 21 fires involving those hover boards, those fires are linked to batteries. j.c.: folks in texas and parts of the midwest are trying to put their lives together following a devastating weekend of severe weather. in texas, 11 people were killed barreled through an area near dallas. that same storm triggered flash floods in missouri and illinois where 15 people were killed. it's estimated the wind from one of the twisters may have reached 200 miles an hour.

football field is now a hockey rink. take a look. gillette stadium will host the bruins and canadiens on friday afternoon. you can see the rink is assembled and the field has been basically transformed. today's work focused on tomorrow's weather. >> outside of what you see, we're in pretty good shape. we're getting ready for the weather like i said, trying to lock up a lot of the stuff down on the field. tomorrow will be a little bit messy in the morning. once we get through that, we're going to start to get the decor around the rink. we'll see if mother nature stays with the real snow or if we have to put down some hollywood snow. phil: i don't know about the hollywood stuff, the nhl will also host the first-ever outdoor women's classic featuring the boston pride before the alumni game on thursday. j.c.: why do you need the hollywood stuff when you have the real stuff. the snow is falling in addition washington, new hampshire, lightly, but it's there.

about a real mix and mess for tomorrow morning. harvey: it is snowing in addition with a, new hampshire, most of the area is not snowing yet and most of the area, we got to get the low levels to get a little moisture. that will start to happen after midnight in a widespread sense, midnight, 1:00, 2:00 in the morning. the period of snow is not that long, 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., south to north, we're going to transition to sleet and ice. that's over the interior to sleet and then rain along the coast because the coast will warm the quickest in the low levels of the atmosphere, all of us will gradually warm in higher levels of the atmosphere. here is boston right now at 31 degrees for now. the air is fairly dry. notice the wind direction is now come around to the east northeast. i'm pointing that out because that direction is off the ocean. because of all of the warm weather we've had, the ocean is mild, milder than it would be at this time of the year normally. it's 47 degrees for the ocean

starting in a few hours, that's going to start to slowly warm the coastline. there will be sleet there, too, after a brief snow, but then it will go to straight rain. the farther back of the coast you go, then the cold air and low levels tend to get locked in. and it's snow, sleet, and freezing rain when you get to that 495 belt north and west. the battle is on between the real cold air trying to come sought out of eastern canada and all of that warmth that has our temperatures to reach the 60's, christmas eve and christmas day. that's still there. in-between the two, that's where we get the storm. notice the snow that is breaking out and this color is showing you the sleet and freezing rain and then to the rain. so that is the progression. it isn't going to be a straight snowstorm. here is some of the snow that is finally reaching the ground in the southern new hampshire and all will move eastward. that first little tongue of snow around midnight or 1:00 a.m. and more widespread

however, look how quickly the sleet area comes in. i think there is going to be more sleet than snow during the morning commute tomorrow. that may make roads rather slippery. please keep that in mind. it doesn't accumulate as readily as the snow, but can make things even more slippery. then as we get deeper into the morning commute, we'll see the rain line move from cape cod up toward boston and the north shore and a little bit inland north and west. so the first part of the day that will have the roughest conditions. by the evening commute, precipitation is pretty much a done deal except for a little bit of drizzle left over. this is not just a snow accumulation, this is snow and sleet. this is the potential anywhere from about an inch to maybe two or three when you go boston to the west and to the north a little bit. go to the south of boston, i think it's just a coating to an inch of snow and possibly really more sleet than the snow. get to route 2 and points northward, minimum two to maximum five, especially in southern new hampshire of snow and sleet and then work your

hampshire, to portland, maine, a four-inch band. tomorrow afternoon, what's left of the precipitation could be freezing rain around that 495 belt and to the north and to the west. as for the ski areas to the north, they finally make out well with over six inches of snow. that is going to be appreciated with a colder pattern to follow. if you want to finish up the christmas week into new year's with skiing, you'll be able to do that. tomorrow, the snow will be transitioning to sleet over the more than commute, rain on the coast. there may be some freezing drizzle tomorrow night as the cold air comes back to the coastline. thursday leading into new year's eve, not a problem, temperatures will be in the 40's. there will be some rain where it could be a little icy, far northern areas only. new year's eve, temperatures will start out in the 30's dropping from 40 into the 30's

bit lower late on new year's eve. new year's day looks seasonally cold and breezy, same thing as we start the weekend and some very cold air will likely move in later next weekend and monday of next week. and cindy and mike will take you through this early tomorrow, so stay with them. that will be the trickiest part of the storm. j.c. and phil. j.c.: finally starting to feel normal around here. it feels so bizarre. phil: it was so nice. j.c.: a new year's tradition in times square. phil: j.c. is not talking about
