6:13 am
eventually we'll see that shift to sleet and rain through afternoon. through lunchtime, winter weather advisories up across a good portion of the area but lingering out through northern worcester county where there could be freezing rain into the afternoon. obvious lie with sleet and the rain mixing in, we're not talking about a lot of snow. we've reports up to about an inch so far. coating to a couple of inches in most areas. a little bit more though north of northern worcester county here. once you head up into southern new hampshire, there could be more than a couple of inches in spots there. ski country doing well out of this system. more than six inches through a lot of parts of northern parts of vermont, new hampshire, western maine. the mountains going to be doing very well with this. that's where the pry mayor snoal fall will be with this system. we're seeing that changeover of snow to sleet from now until 9:00 this morning. we watch that sleet turn to rain first at the coast and then penetrating inland. once you get north and west of 495 though that push of warm air with that easterly wind coming off the ocean may be hard to dij lock the cold out this way.
6:14 am
the temperatures lower 20's out this way. up to 30 now lawrence. above freezing boston, plymouth down to the cape. almost 40 on nantucket. even warmer air to the south associated with our system coming in first at mid levels and then low levels. as this low rides north ward sleet changes over to rain in new york city. that will be happening here as well. you can see that in the next 45 minutes or so. we're going to see that area of rain transition up through parts of the south shore. eventually reaching boston by 9:00 this morning. north and west of town though still sleet hanging on mid to late morning. by noontime primarily rain across the area but notice as we taper off the precipitation, we could have some freezing drizzle kind of lingering into the afternoon to the north and west. we'll talk more about that and also how much snow we've seen so far. let's send it over to mike. mike: the accumulations have not been that high but it's very slippery out there. that's part of the reason of kind of precipitation falling. many times snow is easier to
6:15 am
we have going on out there right now. brewster half inch of snow. dracut 1.1 inches of snow. about a half inch here at the station. what we're talking about is a lot of sleet. what is sleet? sleet is when it starts to snow, falls through an area that is relatively warm and then it kind of refreezes into a clump of ice. it bounces when it hits. you hear that ping, ping, ping going on. freezing rain which we may have problems with as we look inland. this is where that area of really cold air is right on the surface. maybe just the surface itself is cold. it falls as rain. then it freezes on contact. so this is the area we'll be watching as we head through later this morning where we on. if you get enough cold temperatures and enough of that rain falling you see what happensment the ice builds up. that's why as you look out towards the berkshires we could get as much as a half inch of ice out there. there could be power outages as well. cindy: the big difference in temperature, mike, between that and the coastline. in boston by noontime it's 40 degreesment we're in the lower 40's this afternoon.
6:16 am
this afternoon into this evening we are holding it right into lower 30's. so even as the precipitation tapers off there may be pockets lingering of freezing drizzle. and that is a concern through the overnight hours and even as we get toward tomorrow morning right ale long the coastline as well. some lingering low-level moisture. maybe freezing on contact. heads up on that through the morning hours tomorrow morning. otherwise tomorrow is a dry day. we're going to watch this system down to the south kind of shift up the coastline. could bring in a little bit of rain especially southeastern massachusetts wednesday night but time timing is good for new year's eve. if you have plans, if you're heading into the city for first night, it will be dry. mostly cloudy skies early. we'll see clearing happening. temperatures dropping to around 40 degrees in the evening. down into the mid 30's as we ring in the new year. we're not getting out of the 0's the first couple of days of 2016. a chilly weekend setting up. i believe winter has finally arrived. olessa: i think it's finally shown that it's here. not pleasant. cindy: this morning really tough.

seeing those temperatures inch over the freezing mark as we've got that wind coming in off if ocean with water temperatures in the mid and upper 40's. warmer air to the south too coming up with our storm. city. sleet has changed over to rain as this storm lifts north ward. that trend is going to continue. notice as we get toward about 9:00 this morning, we will have flipped over to rain in boston. sleet north and west of town transitioning to rain by lunchtime. as we get into the afternoon hours watching outside of 495 for some lingering areas of freezing rain and drizzle. we'll talk about more how much has fallen out there now. let's send it out over to mike. mike: that sleet is not piling up as much as the snow does. so the areas that have had snow is where we're seeing our heaviest totals. haverill, dracut into southern new hampshire as well. here are some of if totals. you can see atkinson picking up three inches of snow. haverill over two inches of snow. but then it gets less as you head south ward. lexington an inch. natick a little bit less than an inch. even farther south as you head toward new bedford only half an inch of of snow.

talking about is that warm air working its way in aloft. that's going to turn over to snow and sleet to a rain. cold. so we could see some ice build-up especially as you look out towards the berkshires where we could see as much as a quarter inch of ice sticking on things. maybe a scattered power outage or a tree down. that's a possibility for us. primarily rain. cindy. cindy: mike, yes, we're going to watch the temperatures at the coastline come up as we go through the afternoon with that transition over to the rain. but out here along 495, this is where it's going to be colder to bring in the warmer temperatures. so by noontime in boston, it's 41. lower 40's through the afternoon. but look out here in worcester county. this is where we're keeping it in the mid 30's so the concern that freezing rain and drizzle may linger out this way. right up until the overnight hours. as the storm pulls away the moisture goes away as well. freezing drizzle a concern even into tomorrow morning. keep that in mind. tomorrow is is primarily a dry day but this storm to the south may clip southeastern massachusetts with a little bit of rain on wednesday night.
