erika: we have live team coverage of today' s winter storm starting with cindy miss given who is tracking what is still to come. cindy: that' s right. we had snow and sleet this morning. now we are transitioning more into a freezing rain concern. that is why winter weather advisory' s are up until 7:00 this evening. along to the north and west of 495 because that is where we are dealing with some wintry weather and freezing rain and even a little bit of sleet and a few snowflakes mixed in. north shore coming to boston, metrowest, all the way down to the south shore in the kit, we are talking about rain with temperatures in the upper 30' s. you contrast that with what is happening out in worcester where it is 31 degrees and that freezing rain.

continue to drain down on a northeasterly wind. we set of this coastal front, very typical in these types of situations. that is why we are concerned that freezing rain will persist into the afternoon. the backend of the precipitation is near. we are starting to taper down the facilitation, but pockets of freezing drizzle may persist outside of 495. look for it to taper off at three: p.m. -- at 3:00 p.m. freezing temperatures could create black ice and re-freeze. right now, we want to talk about what has hollen out there already. mike: a lot of mess from smaller totals we have seen from previous years. the lightest snow is down to the south.

it is really not too bad. everyone seems to be doing pretty well. we are traveling at speed. a completely different story from earlier this morning. we have video from 5:30 this morning on what 28 through the lexington stretch. we had a trailer truck stuck in the middle of the road, got involved with a jeep. but let me tell you, based on road and the driving conditions out there, it wasn' t all that bad as far as the number of accidents. later on in the morning, we were on the 133 from the andover stretch. they got a lot more snow. we did see some power outages and spotty places. but let me tell you something. for the very first test of the

we looked at the counters at southwest and delta. there were a lot of cancellations at the delta. i met one man who made it to the gate just as he was about to board, they said, sorry, sir, this flight is canceled. across the region, providence and manchester airports also reporting sluggish activity. and that seems a little bit typical. here at american, i checked the board moments ago. eight out of 30 flights are delayed but they are still booked. so if you are going someplace, it is the same advice you heard before. grab your luggage, pack your patience. you' re going to need it today. antoinette: some delays reported on the red line this morning after a switch problem. and several buses removed after getting stuck in the slush. newscenter 5' s todd kazakiewich is live at the jfk/umass station with the mbta' s response to the storm, after coming under fire

todd: we visited the and bta operations office this morning in downtown boston. the commuter system performed well this morning but there was problems with the rapid transit, including the switch here. that led to some delays. overall, it seems it passed its first test and writers seem to be relieved. -- riders seemed to be relieved. the first commute of the winter was a relatively smooth one for the mbta. the only issues can this morning when problems with old switch eaters led to delays on the red line. recent improvements prevented this problem from being as debilitating as it was last year. >> there were failures in the switch keys itself very but under the new procedures, we had staff available to respond

these homes destroyed, cars are busy at work. cindy: it is finally about to exit to the east coast, but along new england. if you are a skier, you' re going, yeah! but if you are trying to drive this morning, it was pretty tough. we have gotten rid of the snow and the sleet in most areas. the concern is a little bit of icing due to freezing rain. that is expected northwest of 495. in terms of the impact yesterday from traveling, we are dealing with rain inside of 495. but freezing rain outside of that. through about 6:00 tonight, i am not expecting additional precipitation per se, but

dropping and that may lead to some black ice as the evening commute gets started and into the overnight hours as well. so that is a concern moving forward. you can see how warm it is to the south. you head up north and look at bangor, maine. it is 12 degrees in that contrast has been fueling our storm. an area of low pressure is getting ready to move through right now. rhode island right now and all of this will continue to pivot north end eastward over the next few hours. that' s why, after 3:00, this is winding down. inside 495, you can see it is rain. especially along the coastline, warm temperatures. 50 degrees right now on nantucket. at the coastline it to boston and the north shore, we are in

but you head inland and we back down to 26 in lawrence after being above freezing. this cold air is raining down, freezing rain right now on the lighter side. but that is what is happening in the worcester area. you can see the wind is coming off the water on the coastline. but it is this northeasterly wind from portsmouth to concord come all the way down to the worcester area that is just raining down the cold air. this is a coastal front. this will be the dividing line this afternoon. we are concerned north and west of this front for some patchy rain and drizzle. the bulk of the precipitation is moving outcome of the cold enough temperatures for anything that is out there in terms of drizzle to be freezing on contact. we are drying it out during the evening hours. the concern is the temperatures. 2:00 in the afternoon, 40' s new the coastline. the best near the coastline.

after that y . by 8:00 and 9:00, many areas will be experiencing a reef for black ice. there will be concerns for black ice. tomorrow is a dry day. we will be watching a new system approach from the south and west. this will stay far enough to the south that it will not be a big player for us. overnight wednesday night, we could see a little bit of rain. looks like that rain will come the cape. thursday morning. if you have plans for new years, maybe heading into boston for first night, it will be dry, mostly cloudy skies command some cleaning as we had to midnight. we will drop down s as we ring in the new year
