but no deaths. that' s really incredible. the cause is under investigation at this hour. phil? phil: thanks. we are breaking news out of new york. the man that you see here, and ex-convicts, claims to have received directions from an overseas member of isis and planned to carry out an attack in a bar in a rochester area. he allegedly bought knives and a machete for that attack. he was nabbed in an fbi staying -- fbi sting. jc: our first night coverage continues with karen anderson downtown. karen: there is no specific known threat to boston tonight. we were with the police commissioner a short time ago as he addressed his officers about tonight.

sera: one thing i am hearing, the weather is comfortable, drawing everybody in. boston' s first night is hitting all of the right notes. the relatively comfortable weather is drawing many for the first time to the new year celebration. >> i have no mittens. very comfortable. you don' t have to worry about that stuff. it was a great day. sera: but boston' s first night is taking a new shape. the celebration is focused on copley square and all of the events are no charge. >> everything is free and open to the public. sera: there are more ice sculptures than ever before, but the overall event has been scaled back. revelers are gobbling up what boston' s first night has to offer. >> it' s great for the kids. they can come out and see bands

we have seen days when it is warmer. i can remember really cold ones. you have readings in the 30' s, 40' s. some of us hit 50 degrees this afternoon. the skies are partly cloudy. they will clear out through the overnight hours. we will start with sunshine. a few clouds will pop up through the afternoon. overall, temperatures will struggle a little bit. then i have part of next week. jc: more it for mission and the death of an amherst student. climb the facade of the four seasons hotel.

. umass, just 20 years old. right now, state police are trying to identify a body found in the charles river in boston. area near the fiedler footbridge at 10:00 this morning. all police will say is that the body is that of a man. phil: the beloved nurse and hampton running just days before christmas has died. amanda turner russell died of injuries from the crash. she was a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at beth eight-year-old boy. she was hit around noon while running on a winter street. as of now the driver has not been charged. her identity has not been released. sky 5 over the scene of a roof collapse in somerville. the carriage house at the site of a former broom factory was undergoing work. no injuries were reported. crews were forced to tear down the two walls left standing

jc: take a look. re s gillette stadium. the nhl' s winter classic getting underway today. sportscenter 5' s bob halloran is live in foxborough where the patriots gave everyone a warm welcome. bob? bob: that' s right and the bruins are not the only ones excited to see their home ice moved to gillette stadium. bill belichick just could not resist. this is belichick early this morning before he flew down to florida with the patriots. the bruins head coach was at the patriots' practice yesterday. we did not see him skate that words or come to a screeching out there. >> it was enjoyable. in my book, it was unique and a

kelley: fortunately he was not injured. arm was broken off. kelley: he has a dashcam for protection in case he was ever in an accident caused by someone else. it did not capture the other driver' s plate. >> i' m upset it happen, but i' m grateful it did not do more damage. clear off your cars. it' s easy and it could save someone' s life. kelley: kelley tuthill, wcvb newscenter 5. phil: at least he is ok. jc: he was so calm. no reaction, no flinch. phil: that could have been dangerous.

a foodie -- i know that white truffles are expensive. phil: i was never a fan of truffles, but i would take a bite of the burger because it was $175. jc: would you pay $175? phil: no, mike would pay for it. mike: hey, rough one for a barbecue today. interesting -- every day of this month except two, high temperatures above normal. this is going down for the record books. it' s been a really interesting year. you think back to february, it was the coldest february on record. also -- we will not forget about that 1 -- the record snowfall, over nine feet of snow. we were drive for the year.

we dropped to three degrees below zero. we are not looking at that terribly warm or cold all of a winter. although, early next week, it will drop offer a few days and warm up again. 50 in plymouth toward boston. very mild. still mild, 42 degrees. we do have a westerly wind picking up a little bit. so, if you are stepping out tonight, bundle up a little bit. the breeze will have a little bit of a bite to it. we have the clear cloud cover. tonight, we will call it partly cloudy skies. tomorrow, i think we start the day with sunshine, but we may see some of these clouds developing in the afternoon. it' of year.
