persistence pays off. there may be slippery spots out there. south shore this not see much, but there' s a batch out to the west. all through the coast by about 8:00, 9:00 tonight. temperatures out there are into the 30' s at this point. once snow moves through, the skies will clear away. high temperatures in the upper 30' s, and plenty of sunshine. tracking new batch of snow for monday. i will show you how far inland that will move. phil: right now, four people, including a child are recovering from serious injuries after a crash involving two all-terrain vehicles. it happened in fitchburg last night. one of the victims had his leg amputated. our juli mcdonald is live in fitchburg with the story. reporter: four people who were riding the two atv' s. if you take a look behind me you can get an idea how dark it was in this densely wooded neighborhood when the crash happened.

who fears it could have been even worse had a car been driving too fast down this road last night. >> it' s a tragedy. you think people were trying to enjoy new year' s eve and just unfortunate. reporter: a nightmare on new year' s eve for families in fitchburg, two men and two young boys were badly hurt in an atv crash on ashburnham hill road. police believe the two vehicles collided with each other around 9:20. >> it was all right out in the middle of the road and it was really dark. juli: robyn forkey and her friend were driving on that road when they came upon someone bleeding. then when we got out we saw the atv, another atv, and then the little boy screaming down the hill for somebody to help him. juli: a 32-year-old and a 6-year-old had to be flown by medical helicopter to umass medical center. the child was in respiratory arrest, the man had suffered a serious leg injury. >> one of the patients had his left leg amputated.

taken to the hospital by ambulance. deputy fire chief dateo told newscenter 5 when it comes to s, riders unfortunately don' t have to be driving fast for something bad to happen. >> they' re like a motorcycle. t know if any of them wore helmets or not. a minor accident could be a severe injury. juli: state police conducted the reconstruction of this crash, and now fitchburg police will continue with the investigation. captain gianinni told newscenter 5 that they are looking to determine whether alcohol was a factor in this crash. live in fitchburg, juli mcdonald, wcvb newscenter 5. phil: a victim claims a man grabbed her from behind on annabelle street about 6:45 this morning. he claimed to have a weapon, then sexually assaulted her.

anyone with information is asked to call boston police. jc: you bedford police are going for a killer in a deadly new year' s eve shooting. the victim was shot on grinnell street near pleasant street after 7:00 last night. they were unable to save him. phil: boston police arrested two people in connection with an armed robbery. police say angel lebron-boria and bridgette tragiou held a hypodermic needle to an andrew square convenience store clerk and stole money from the register. jc: newscenter 5' s jack harper is live in west bridgewater,

jack: not only knocked over, but shattered. >> 1751 is our oldest. jack: this is the fifth time vandals have targeted the pleasant hill cemetery. this time 33 stones were hit. >> it' s very tragic. i don' t know what else to say. jack: the damages throughout the cemetery. these are the graves of allison' s grandparents and their parents. >> is awful. -- it' s awful. even when i pulled up and saw all of them down, i can' t believe it. >> i have to contact living relatives, if there are any. and welcome their new year. and then after that all the ones that there are no living relatives, i have no idea what we' re going to do. jack: all the damage hurts.

her great-grandmother' s grave was hit. >> i am saying glad my mother is no longer with us because she would be standing here crying her eyes out right now. jack : in west bridgewater, jack harper, wcvb newscenter 5. phil: jc: this rollover in barnstable has three people seriously hurt tonight. the crash happened just afternoon today on route six. phil: a firefighter and one other person recovering after this five alarm fire. investigators say flames started in a barn on main street last night. both victims suffered minor injuries. we' re told firefighters face an even more difficult job because of problems getting water there to the scene. breaking news from overseas, a deadly attack at a popular bar in tel aviv caught on camera. a manhunt for the suspect

images from that security camera. john atwater is live at the breaking news desk. john: that men fired more than 15 rounds, killing two people. this camera shows her next-door to that bar inside a grocery store. he walks up to a shopping cart and then sets down a bag. in moments here you will see him pull out a gun and run to the sidewalk, where he starts spraying bullets. the next camera angle is from the bar. people are eating and tricking inside the bar, and then off to the right on the sidewalk, the gunman emerges, firing that automatic weapon and running away. you will see him appear in the right hand side of the screen. right now police trying to uncover a motive, but they have critical evidence including that bag and a clip from his gun. right now we know police have deployed officers across the city in a massive manhunt. john atwater, wcvb newscenter 5.

s eve terror threat that forced the evacuation of two train stations in munich. a german security official says islamic state extremists planned to blow themselves up at locations across munich last night. police urge everyone to stay vigilant. 5 on the opioid crisis, stunning numbers from 2015 are still being tabulated. the resolve to fight back is growing. karen anderson is here with the story. karne: state police alone responded to more than 350 suspected heroin deaths in 2015. that does not include many of the state' s major cities. >> those numbers are miniscule to the amount of people who are actually suffering. karen: the firefighter knows the pain behind the numbers. >> lost a family member. mothers, fathers, siblings, children. karen: for doherty, it' s personal.

back in may, 5 investigates profiled the firefighter' s teaming up with substance abuse experts, visitinhomes in riviere, where they have responded to heroin overdoses. >> we know we' re doing something right and in 2016 we will do more of what we' re doing. karen: in 2015, massachusetts state police responded to 755 suspected heroin overdoses across the state. the average victim, 36 years old. >> until we find a cure or a solution to this problem, this epidemic, these numbers will continue to rise. karen: as long as this contin ues, with a new year, there is

phil: there' s new trouble to start the new year for two fantasy sports sites. the new york attorney general wants fanduel and boston based draftkings to turn over profits made in the empire state to the gamblers who lost the money. that' s around 200 million dollars. the a.g. filed a lawsuit that would also require the sites to pay a hefty fine to the state. it' s the latest move in new york' s attempt to shut down the popular sites calling them illegal gambling. jc: it' s a tie. the first two babies born in massachusetts this year arrived just 2 minutes into 2016. zoey faith will call lowell home but she was delivered at tufts medical center in boston at.

mom says the nurses had a feeling zoey would be the first boston baby of the year. >> i' m so excited right now, super nervous. it' s a girl. jc: and over in worcester at the same exact time,, baby carmelita skaza arrived at umass memorial medical center. her parents live in auburn and carmelita is their first child. congratulations to all. phil: mike wankum just ahead with a january forecast that feels like january.

phil: celebrations of a new year continued in boston today with first day festivities. events kicked off in copley square at 11:00 this morning following a successful first night. they included performances by various music and dance groups as well as photo ops with mary poppins and a magic show. this is the first year boston has held events on new year' s day. jc: a local couple planning a wedding, is taking a different approach when it comes to gifts. they want their guests to help them make a difference in the lives of others. >> zoe reiches and stephond goler are getting married, but they vowed to defy tradition. >> we are from believers in doing things the way we want to. reporter: the bride to be has special ties to the african she' s visited three times, as a

then teacher at the new life international orphanage, where education is lacking. >> so when kids aren' t in school they' re working. rather than getting an education . reporter: so instead of conventional gifts, zoe and stephond are asking their wedding guests to donate money towards building a school in ghana, a key step out of poverty. they have a go fund me page, raising nearly $9,000, they hope for 50,000. reporter: the money -- honeymoon will be in ghana for construction. their wedding in two weeks will be like a fundraiser. >> the end result will be your

phil: a spectacular idea. fantastic. jc: after the weather. there is light snow out there. reporter: it' s not much, but it is coming through. one thing have noticed, the trend over the last hour, kind of decreasing aerial coverage. that is to be expected. we had a little batch around the boston area. new area from malden over towards the arlington area. big gap then takes place. we see a steady band as you look off towards the west. this is probably the most intense area we' ve seen all day today. you look at our local radar, you can see how it goes towards westford right down to hartford and passing through sterling. this will be heading its way

winding down as we had through the evening hours. this a batch down here in the south. i don' t know. if it will hold together enough -- enough. you may be in line for some snow on monday because we have ocean effect no to talk about in the forecast. by 8:00, pushing its way through. 9:00 really winding down. tomorrow it looks like basically a sunny day out there. there may be clouds in the afternoon, not nearly as extensive as we saw this afternoon. it feels nice out there. kind of gray in the afternoon, 39 degrees. wind chill down to 32 degrees. some evenings snow showers, clearing overnight tonight. 24 to 28. wait until you see the cold temperatures coming up by the first of the week. a couple degrees cooler than today. what happens over the weekend?

there, a few clouds in the afternoon. could trigger off a flurry or two. more important is what happens behind it and what happens on monday. here' s monday morning. northeasterly flow coming in. we set ourselves up for ocean effect snow. you have to be close to the water to get ocean effect snow. cape cod, most likely spots. those are the most likely areas we could see accumulation. what i we talking about for accumulation? high of only 28 degrees. you have to have the wind in just the right direction, not too fast, not too slow. we could see isolated 1 to 2 inches possible. look at these low temperatures, tuesday morning down to 10:00. i do think will see a mild trend as we head towards the middle of next week. temperatures will warm back up into the 40' s. friday is looking quite as well.

inspiration scale. >> we have enough of talent and people in here to do the job. bob: instead of the game of their lives the bruins played , perhaps their worst game of the year. there was plenty of pomp, but the bruins quickly found themselves in the circumstance of being in a hole. montreal' s david desharnais swats the puck out of the air twice and finally gets it to trickle past tuukka rask. 2nd period this time it' s bryan flynn knocking a puck out of the air and paul byron re-directs it home. ok theme developing here' s a montreal goal that never seems to touch the ice, max pacioretty batting at the puck around shoulder height and then brendan gallagher giving it a backhand swipe out of the air. montreal up 3-nothing. now, here' s holliston' s own mike condon with the save of the game ryan spooner looking at a lot of empty net but condon swallows up the shot with his giant glove condon with 27 saves.
