i'm emily riemer. randy: and i'm randy price with cindy fitzgibbon. they'll really be able to make some snow tonight. cindy: the next 48 hours coldest by far of the entire season so far. emily: it's about time i guess. cindy: it is is january after all. that cold is is coming in with a couple of flurries in a few spots this morning. kids are going to want the heavy coats at the bus stop this morning not so much for what it's like out there now but getting off the bus this afternoon wind chills down in the teens. temperatures dropping as the day wears on. right now it's 27 in worcester. 31 in boston. we're actually above freezing on the cape for moment. you can see that wind now shifting around to the north, north of the pike. it's more northwesterly south of the pike so that is our frontal boundary. and along the front you can see a couple of flurries getting reports of a few flakes out in marlborough, framingham. not going to amount to anything. they're just flying around through the air here but they are indicating our arctic frontal boundary. this is opening the door for arctic air to pour on down. it's below zero in ottawa right now. 10 in syracuse. so that's the cold. it's going to be working on in.

as the winds pick up, look at this. by noontime the wind chills are going to be running in the teens. they'll be down in the single digits by about 6:00 tonight. so that's what you need to dress for. bundle up throughout the day. most of us seeing a mixture of sun and clouds today but right along the coastline late morning and into the afternoon, ocean-effect snow bands setting up. they will be most pronounced here and most persistent on the cape and nantucket. that is where we do have a winter weather advisory up late this morning right through tomorrow morning as well. watch out for reduced visibility and some slipper erodes developing here as well. let's get you out to the roads this morning. larson. hi, jeff. jeff: good morning. very heavy volume all around metro boston particularly on the southeast expressway. vacations are over. home. they're going to work. that means a lot of pressure on the roads. southeast expressway is quite let's go to the maps. we'll see what happens happening on our roads. first of all there's a minor crash that's on the ramp from 3 southbound down in duxbury to route 3a. not a big factor but there is area.

as you come in closer to the city very heavy volume on 128 through rand ol and braintree trying to get to the expressway. even route 3 is slow. then that expressway ride is upwards of 20 minutes. upwards of that. traffic is slow on 93 southbound through andover and it's still quite slow getting past montvale avenue and route 128. heavy traffic, randy. back to you. randy: right now we are about a truly bizarre case. a babysitter accused of out of her home in the middle of the night. and that was just the start. emily: in just hours that suspect is expected back before a judge. the eyeopener's todd kazakiewich is live in newburyport with what we hope to learn. todd? snoid emily and randy. we are hoping to learn where this strange case goes from here. as you may remember at the arraignment back in november, abigail hannah was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if, in fact, she is competent to strand trial. at that time, a court clinician said she was experiencing hallucinations, expressed

thoughts of suicide, and could not participate in her own defense. hanna is charged with kidnapping the two-year-old girl from her hamilton home, beating her, then dumping her by the side of a road. a couple driving by found the toddler even as a desperate search was underway. police say she had cigarette burns on her body. the little girl's parents told police hanna had babysat for them before they fired her. we hope to learn more about this case in court today. we're looking for a motive in this bizarre incident later today in court. reporting live, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: right now president obama is preparing for a critical meeting on gun control. today the president will meet with attorney general loretta lynch. potential executive orders to strengthen the nation's gun laws. that includes beefing up background checks required for gun purchases. on thursday, the president will participate in a town hall meeting on gun control in virginia. emily: several developments to watch for today in the race for the white house. republican front-runner donald trump will hold a rally in

lowell tonight even as he takes aim at a big name hitting the campaign trail. former president bill clinton will kick off a push in new hampshire on behalf of his wife. trump calling it the worst thing she could do as the war of words between the two front-runners heats up once again. hillary clinton took shots at trump over his comments on muslims in america. and trump fired back brushing off his appearance in a recruiting video for the terror group al shabaab. clinton: you hear all of this rhetoric attacking muslims and muslim americans. it's not only shameful and offensive-- which it is-- it counterproductive and dangerous. trump: hillary clinton created isis with obama. emily: trump's rally at umass lowell is scheduled to start at 7:00 tonight. as for bill clinton, he will be in nashua at 11:30 this morning before heading to an early evening event in exeter. also today, the trump campaign will hit the airwaves for the first time.

fiscal year. the state is facing an estimated billion-dollar budget gap. but deleo says residents should not pay more for state services. emily: the patriots are moving on to the postseason, but they're doing it in the number-two spot. and that loss to miami was painful. just ask tom brady. number 12 is now on the list of pats players who will have injuries monitored during the bye week. another thing we learned last night-- that first playoff game will be january 16 in foxborough. and some big additions could come with it. that part of the story in our next half hour. a connecticut man arrested outside of gillette stadium with a slew of weapons is expected in court today. police say matthew bromson was drunk and acting suspiciously friday in an off-site employee parking lot. they found a stun gun, a sword, and a slingshot inside his car. bromson, who was also the subject of a 2014 standoff in connecticut, is facing several charges. randy: thousands of bags of a

more lethal batch of heroin are off the streets in western massachusetts. 9,000 bags of so-called "hollywood heroin" were seized this weekend in springfield. police say they were hidden in a fake car bumper. police had stepped up patrols after eight people overdosed on that batch of drugs. emily: right now in waltham, investigators are trying to figure out what started a fire that damaged several businesses on moody street. the flames broke out yesterday afternoon inside a laundromat. quickly through a space in the ceiling. at one point firefighters were ordered to get off the roof because it wasn't safe. >> my daughter and i were over at shoppers cafe to watch the football game. the next thing you know, we saw the fire trucks pull up. the smoke was so thick billowing out of the building we couldn't even see the building from across the street so it got ugly kind of quick. emily: crews eventually got the fire under control. no one was hurt. right now a lawrence man is behind bars accused of dragging a state trooper with his car.

police say it happened during a traffic stop along 93 south in medford. that's when the driver robert aybar allegedly took off dragging the trooper for a short distance. the trooper -- who was not seriously hurt -- jumped back in his cruiser and managed to chase aybar down. randy: the new carrier for "the boston globe" says it could take four to six months for home delivery to get back to normal. readers are angry after the paper shifted to a new delivery vendor. many subscribers haven't gotten a paper in over a week. "the globe" emailed customers, listing more than 100 zip codes with delays yesterday. a half-dozen zip codes were in boston even after "globe" managers and staffers volunteered to take on the deliveries themselves. even neighbors have a story to tell. >> my neighbor got one on saturday. right after christmas. we didn't. i'm not quite sure what's going on. >> now it's eight days, and i'm

erodes developing on the cape. this is a localized thing. we're seeing a couple of flurries through metro west. framingham up to way land over to marlborough down to westborough. dropping toward milford now. these are some very light flurries. a couple of flakes flying in the air. many of you telling me about them on twitter this morning. appreciate the observations always. you can see not a huge deal this morning but what this is, you can see how the winds are north of the pike and then more northwest south of the pike. this is our frontal boundary moving on through. this arctic front is is just opening up the door with that shifting wind to the north to allow these arctic air which is sitting up across canada right now and bleeding in to far northern new england. this is going to be dropping south ward as the day wears on. so these temperatures this morning mid 20's worcester upper 20's lawrence to beverly. look at boston 31. it's above freezing on the cape. that is is not going to last. the temperatures are slowly going to trickle down as the day wears on. by noontime we're down in the mid 20's, lower 20's by this evening and all the while the winds are picking up out of the north.

you're heading out on your lunch break. could feel like it's in the teens. those wind chills drop even further tonight. they're getting down below zero. real cold stuff on the way. now those northerly winds are going to help to generate some of those ocean-effect snow bands starting up late morning and then during the afternoon they may try to pivot back toward cape ann, coastal plymouth county. primarily it is for you on the cape where they will be most persistent through the overnight hours and into tomorrow morning. we may see accumulation on the order of one to up to four inches and localized heavier bands. outside of that a coating to maybe an inch coastal plymouth county and up to cape ann. overnight low temperatures single digits around 11 in boston. a cold start tomorrow. lots of sunshine on the other side of this high pressure. milder air is waiting in the wings. that arrives on wednesday afternoon as we're back up to around 40 degrees but another cold one tomorrow. forget what the thermometer says. out the door tomorrow morning it will feel like it's below zero. wind chills in the single digits through lunchtime. it will take us until the afternoon to feel like it's in

the teens so a cold one on tuesday. moderating temperatures midweek. 40 heading into the weekend when a storm approaches. that one could be a messy mix of rain and snow. so watching that heading toward the weekend. jeff: i think i wore the wrong coat this morning. cindy: you need a heavy one. dig it out. you haven't needed it all year. you'll be ready tomorrow. jeff: not this afternoon apparently. a busy commute. a lot of traffic as opposed to last week when so many people were on vacation. we have sky 5 up over route 128 traveling through the randolph stretch right in the vicinity of route 24. you can see there's a lot more traffic than we had last week on our roadways. fortunately no big incidents to talk about. we've been collision-free. let's go to the maps. at least no major collisions that are affecting us. it's very heavy on 128 just around where sky 5 was heading toward the southeast expressway. and route 3 is quite slow getting on through braintree as well. that expressway drive time is now about 25 minutes. again that will be busy. won be too long until a half-hour ride into the city. fairly slow traffic on 93 southbound. it begins at wilmington and

continues toward the city. not jammed but it's certainly sluggish volume for travelers there. at the moment the turnpike continues to move quite well. an 18-minute right from 495 and 128. the "t" had cancellations on the fair mount line. keep that in mind. emily: in the right place at the right time. an armed robber at a convenience store in new york had no clue what was coming. as he's demanding cash from the clerk, a customer with a large flashlight rushes into store and starts hitting him in the head. this was all caught on camera at a 7-eleven just outside of buffalo. the robber managed to stumble away; police eventually caught him. randy: we are getting our very first look at the "el faro" cargo ship on the bottom of the atlantic ocean. this is new video of the wreckage, 15,000 feet deep in the waters off the bahamas. the ship went down after the engine lost power during hurricane joaquin. 33 crew members were killed. the ntsb released the footage of the debris last night. cars that were part of the cargo

along with office equipment on the sandy bottom. the video was captured by a deep-water, remote-controlled sub. three crew members with local ties were killed when the ship sank-- jeff mathias, keith griffin, and mariette wright. the ship's black box was never recovered. federal investigators are considering a new mission to try to find it. emily: asian stocks plunged today, forcing markets in china to stop trading for the day. weak manufacturing data and tensions in the middle east weighing on the markets and driving up oil prices. right now u.s. stock futures are sharply lower, down more than 250 points. randy: resolutions still in place? trying to stay social and healthy this new year? if you're dining out, here are three surprisingly dirty places in your favorite restaurant. first, the table. experts say significant numbers of bacteria, including e-coli, can live on tabletops.

there's a winter weather advisory through tomorrow morning. watch out for slipper erodes. that is localized though. widespread not an issue out there this morning though. we do have a lot of company on the row, jeff. jeff: a lot of people going back to work. that means a lot of volume. look at that on the southeast expressway. just very heavy traffic coming in toward the city between braintree and downtown boston. that's upward of a 30-minute drive time. we don't have incidents to talk about so no crashes that are affecting things. just heavy volume. down to the south 95 the top end is slow from neponset street. look at the traffic on 128 get to go the expressway. that's going to be a slow run from randolph on in. that expressway ride, as i said it's about 25 to 0 minutes between braintree to boston. the turnpike start to go get into the mix as well that slow traffic getting up through framingham up toward the interchange 13 and then congested as well up toward route 128. emily, back to you. emily: jeff, thank you. some of the stories we're tracking right now on the eye. a babysitter accused of kidnapping a hamilton toddler from her home-- beating her, and dumping her by the side of a road-- is expected in court today.

saturday. he says the high-speed chair started to move before they could get the bar down. prangley also says there was no one watching the lift to shut it down so he had to ride up to the top to alert ski patrol about the accident. >> i don't want any parent to have to make the choice about this situation that i had and to watch your child fall and not know if he's going to be okay. i mean, that's the thing that just will probably traumatize me forever. erika: the boy is expected to be okayhe was treated for a concussion. a spokesman for ragged mountain says the lift was properly staffed. he says they're investigating prangley's claims that no one was manning the lift's "stop button." randy? randy: councilors at northeastern university will be available today after a missing student was found dead. the school's president says the body of 21-year-old dennis njoroge was found in the charles river on new year's eve. there's no further information right now on how he died, but his death is not suspicious.

november. this 21-year old laconia, new hampshire, man is facing charges this morning after police say they clocked him driving 105 miles per hour in new hampton. state police charged paul kimble with reckless driving. he'll be in court next month. rescued off the coast of cape cod. the wellfleet bay wildlife sanctuary captured this loggerhead at breakwater beach in brewster. experts say the stranding season warmer waters are keeping turtles here longer. since november, rescuers have recovered 520 turtles from cape cod beaches. 21 were saved since january 1. something will soon be missing from the grocery store. randy: the labels getting dumped. and a wedding ring lost inside a store could soon be reunited with its owners. the distinctive marks making it easy to identify. emily: and ahead in news to go, bill cosby's wife could be

it goes through the overnight into tomorrow morning several inches could pile up here on the cape and nantucket. winter weather advisories up for that reason through tomorrow morning. on radar this morning, there is a little bit of very light snow. flurries, a better word for it. these are just a few flakes flying through the air. they're not accumulating. we've seen metro west they're dropping south of the pike now hugging right along 495 headed down towards franklin and toward north bridge. a few flakes flying out there as well. this is all associated with our arctic front. it is the leading edge of that colder air that is working on down. it's actually below zero up in ottawa right now. so that is the cold air mass that is is feeding on in. yeah, we're near 30 this morning but notice by noontime, mid 20's. low 20's by day's end. all the while that wind is picking up out of the north. so wind chills by lunch down in the teens. we're going to drop through the single digits this evening. overnight those wind chills will drop below zero so the cold is coming on in. that northerly wind is primarily going to set up these ocean-effect bands on the cape. they may try to pivot back.

cape ann you're vulnerable. coastal plymouth county as well. it could leave behind one to up to four inches of snow on the cape. just a coating to an inch elsewhere. you see the wind and cold with us tomorrow. only in the 20's tuesday. we're back to 4 here on wednesday. let's get you back out to the roads. they are busy, jeff. jeff: they are busy. you're absolutely right. a lot of volume on the road as people come back from vacation. what we never really know about is whether people will be crashing and causing additional problems. look here at route 1 through the saugus area. that's the volume of traffic we're dealing with. to the maps. we don't have a lot of crashes to talk about. that means it's a little bit better than we could have in terms of the volume. heavy on 93 southbound. it begins in wilmington. slow in chelmsford on route 3 on the southbound side of the roadway. still dealing with the delays on 128 getting to the expressway. then the expressway itself is still almost 30 minutes for that ride in toward the city. that's all just heavy volume. there are minor delays on the mbta on the orange line as well as the green line b branch.

randy: jeff, thank you. a hamilton babysitter accused of kidnapping a little girl she once cared for is expected in court. emily: the eyeopener's todd kazakiewich is live in newburyport with what we hope to learn about this case today. todd: emily and randy, good morning. we hope to learn more about the motive for this shocking crime and if the babysitter is competent to stand trial. as you may recall, at her arraignment in november, abigail hanna was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. at the time, a court psychologist testified that hanna was experiencing hallucinations, was suicidal, and could not participate in her own defense. hanna is charged with kidnapping a two-year-old from the girl's home in hamilton, then beating her, and abandoning her by the side of the road. reporting live in newburyport, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: an armed militia continues to occupy a federal wildlife refugee along with a building there in rural oregon. the armed protestors angry over the newly extended prison sentences of two local ranchers

cruiser on new year's day. the officer called for help and chased down the suspect. police say bowman told them, quote, "you are all doomed, and you're going to die." emily: at least six people are dead and 100 more injured after a powerful earthquake in a remote region of northeast india. the 6.7 magnitude quake hit just before dawn there this morning. it damaged several buildings leaving large cracks in walls, and a portion of a popular market building collapsed in the state capital. randy: the site of the deadly san bernardino terror attack is set to reopen today. nearly 600 employees of the inland regional center will return after a husband and wife opened fire there killing 14 people. leaders of the center say employees will meet in small groups this morning so they can discuss their feelings about returning. the conference center where the massacre happened remains closed indefinitely. emily: today the president will meet with attorney general loretta lynch. he's expected to discuss potential executive orders to strengthen the nation's gun laws.

that includes beefing up background checks required for gun purchases. on thursday, the president will participate in a town hall meeting on gun control in virginia. randy: a man charged in connection with the worcester armory theft will be back in court today. tyrone james is charged with possession of some of the guns taken from the lincoln stoddard army reserve. james allegedly helped this man, james walker morales, sell guns that police say morales stole from the center. a third suspect, ashlee bigsbee, is charged with unlawful possession of a stolen firearm and lying to authorities. emily: the boston globe's new carrier says it could take four to six months for home delivery to get back to normal. many subscribers haven't gotten a paper in over a week even after "globe" managers and staffers volunteered to take on the deliveries themselves. in a statement, "the globe" says a.c.i. media took over distribution last monday with a new staff of 600 carriers who need to learn new routes and new addresses. methuen after a series of car

randy: three people, including a minor, are under arrest in the murder of a newly inaugurated mayor in central mexico. gisela mota was found shot to death in her home on saturday. the former federal congresswoman had just been sworn in the day before. the state's governor is blaming organized crime for the killing. emily: a powerful image from greece. a team from greenpeace international and doctors without borders created a peace sign made from more than 3,000 discarded life jackets from refugees. this picture was taken on january 1. the group posting the image with the caption "safe passage for refugees in 2016." randy: a new survey is finding that many pediatricians are not recommending the cancer-preventing h.p.v. vaccine to preteens. that's contributing to low vaccination rates. the survey finds more than a third of doctors are more likely to offer the vaccine to girls and boys who are older than the recommended 11 or 12 years old. most doctors say they think parents will object to the

slow. that's slow back to wilmington coming 93 southbound. again no major incidents. that means that it is not as bad as we had been concerned about. we still have that slow traffic on 128 for the randolph up toward the expressway. then the expressway itself you're almost 30 minutes for that ride in toward the city which is about average for most commutes out there. ride. about 30 minutes as well. no other problems on the mbta where everything is on time. dry. that is is helping us out quite a bit on the roads. cindy: and the temperatures aren't cold yet considering where they're headed this afternoon. clouds over the city of boston this morning. we are talking about cloudy start to the day. 31 degrees in boston right now. we've got that northerly wind at 16 miles per hour. and look to the north. it is below zero up in canada. that's the air mass that is going to be working on in. the leading edge of that cold is this arctic frontal boundary that is coming through metro west in southern worcester county with snow snrowrs and flurries. these will be sliding down 495

so around attleboro you're going to be getting on more of these. you've seen a couple flakes in foxborough. those should persist off and on for the next 45 minutes or so. the temperatures dropping from near 30 this morning into the low 20's by day's end. and the wind chills will be down in the teens by lunchtime. single digits by the evening. they'll go below zero tonight. that northerly wind also going to generate ocean-effect snow showers here on the cape. some of these bands may try to pivot back up toward cape ann and coastal plymouth county. i don't think it will amount to as much here o the cape with these persistent bands through the overnight hours and into tomorrow morning, you could see accumulation on the order of one to locally up to four inches of snow. otherwise it is just a coat to go an inch. look at these temperatures by morning. single digits and teens. that's without the wind factored in. wind chills going to be sub zero out the door tomorrow morning. take a look. it will feel like it's below zero through the morning hours here. even by lunchtime, wind chill s are going to be only in the teens. that's where they hover throughout the day. it is cold right through tuesday into wednesday morning. we moderate in the afternoon
