[laughter] yes, it is not nearly as bitter this morning as you step out. single-digit temperatures. this is the difference between yesterday morning and this morning. nearly 20 degrees less cold in boston out the door right now than it was at this time yesterday. you can see the difference in temperature. 27, we just jumped up to it in boston. yesterday morning, it was in the single digits. but we do have those this morning on the south shore. it is 11 in hyannis. what we don' t have are the winds. they are generally near 10 miles per hour this morning. also notice that southwesterly

overhead. underneath that high, loads of sunshine today. we are going to keep the sun with us all day long. up to around 40 this afternoon. some lower 40' s back through the merrimack valley. upper 30' s out through worchester county. but 40 down to the south. the cape, low 40' s with sunshine this afternoon. let' s get you out to the roads. good morning, olessa. olessa: good morning, cindy. route 1 in saugus, bumper to bumper at this point. this shot is about a mile north of where that problem is. if you are traveling northbound, the ramp to essex street is closed because of a fire. southbound aside, stop and stare delays adding to that volume.

on that. north of there, and accident and 93 south at 495 did eastbound on the pike -- some delays building expressway. trains and buses doing ok. emily: breaking news right now, a massive fire sweeps through a home in saugus. randy: that battle is still we want to get over to the eyeopener' s doug meehan. doug: thank you very much. just to give you a sense of behind our camera. to my left hand side. tucked in just before the exit for essex street here in saugus. and just behind the gas station is where that home is. just before 5:00 a.m., they got

scary moments for the family who lives inside. firefighters trying to tackle this three alarm blaze. when they got here, it was fully involved. there was a firefighter. the firefighter going by the name of dj lost his helmet. he was momentarily trapped inside. they called everybody out, and dj did make it out safely. no injuries to the firefighter, no injuries to the people who were inside at the time when this fire broke out. we are scheduled to meet with the chief of what exactly happened here, but as you can see, well into an hour into this fire, we still have heavy smoke billowing into the early morning skies here. firefighters are hard at work trying to douse those flames. we did see some of the flames jump up moments ago.

trying to fight it. they have sand and salt down as firefighters face a slippery situation. the folks that were living t know if it was a family, but they are all safe to and all of the firefighters fighting this fire are safe and ok, at least at this hour. update. we will be hearing more from the morning. commuters are hoping for a much smoother ride on the rails. broken, canceled, delayed trains all fresh in their memories. and the problem so severe, state police are now helping the mbta investigate this. t employees handed out rider updates, explaining how a

sales are done by private dealers who do not have to run background checks or even show id. randy: there is a mystery this morning connected to the san bernardino shooting massacre. investigators have been able to put together a timeline of the day of the attacks. after the shooting at 11 a.m., the suspects escaped and make several stops. but there is no trace of the suspects between 12:59 and 1:17 in the afternoon. investigators want to know what time. just two hours later, at 3:16 p.m., the suspects were both dead in a shootout with police. a warning this morning. emily: how people are getting ripped off during their workouts. and a baby left alone while her mother shopped. randy: and knew this morning, sugar where you least expect it.

wall-to-wall sunshine all day long. it is going to feel like it bumps up to 40 degrees this afternoon in boston. upper 30' s out through the worcester hills. down to the cape, a big warm up for you this afternoon. tonight, we fall back mainly into the 20' s. a few of our coldest suburbs could be in the mid and upper teens overnight. high-pressure pushes eastward on thursday. eventually, some of this moisture will start to get in here. tomorrow is another mostly sunny day. lower 40' s tomorrow. on friday, we may start with a little sunshine, and then northeasterly winds is going to feed and moisture. at the same time, a warm front is approaching. that is going to allow this -- allow us to cloud over. maybe a touch of drizzle on saturday morning. it may be just cold enough

north of there, 495 south by 93, a crash. and another accident here by the lowell connector. and south of town, typical volume here. the expressively -- expressway is about 25. emily: a mother is in trouble right now after leaving her baby alone in a freezing car. another shopper at the wrentham outlets noted the eight month old crying in the parking lot. police say she admitted she went into the nike store for about 10 minutes, leaving the baby alone when it was just 22 degrees out. officers tell us the mother was not from here and there was a language barrier, but they say that is no excuse. >> regardless of the weather, leaving an eight-month-old in the car is just not acceptable.

with child endangerment. this wednesday, asian stocks slumped overnight over worries about korea. wall street will be looking for clues from the federal reserve when minutes from their latest meeting are released today. randy: apple is scaling back production of its iphones. the company braces for lower sales. tech analysts had warned that act couple -- that apple would struggle to grow demand for the iphone. several u.s. airlines are raising base round-trip prices on domestic flights. the six dollar average hike is the first large-scale increase since june. delta airlines began this on monday, quickly followed by southwest, american, united, jetblue, and virgin america.

braintree to boston. trains and buses doing ok. emily: breaking news, a home goes up in flames and saugus. randy: doug is on the scene. doug: firefighters have their hands full with this fire. it has re-spark since we have and smoke now. street, right off route 1. folks probably drive by everyday trying to get on route 1. a single-family structure, mostly brick, the roofline fully involved. several people inside at the time the fire broke out and everybody got out safely. firefighters entered the building and had to call everybody out because of a mayday, a firefighter lost his helmet and got trapped momentarily, he made it out ok with no injuries.

officers were in an unmarked car when they say roy bautista drove-up to a boy who just got off the school bus. police say bautista tried to lure that boy into his car. the boy said no and took off. bautista floored it when officers chased after him. he side-swiped a few cars before getting away, but police later tracked him down. randy: it may have been a popular holiday gift, but this morning emerson says those controversial hoverboards are not welcome on campus. in an e-mail to students, the school said the devices present a number of safety risks, citing recent fires. the consumer product safety commission launched an investigation into the gadgets last month. emily: a college professor fired for what she thought was a simple statement. randy: the comment she says was meant to show solidarity between religion. a father and son reunited, the homecoming leaving a little boy at a loss for words. emily: we' re following breaking news out of saugus right now. a massive fire on essex street.

randy: sky 5 live here showing you one big story, we are looking at a scene in saugus, firefighters have been here for quite some time, still battling this fire on essex street. one firefighter had to jump out of a first floor window to escape the flames, he was not hurt.

report in a couple of minutes. cold conditions for the firefighters. s. a few spots in the single digits but the winds are light. that is a good thing. not giving us better wind chill' s -- bitter wind chills. how does 40 degrees sound, that is where we are headed, sunshine today and tomorrow before the clouds move back in on friday. north of the canadian border, is where you find cloud cover. a big area of high pressure coming in and that will do a couple things, keep the sky clear today and keep the winds light. not expecting strong windchill today, 21 in worcester. cold pockets come a single digits in nashua back to orange and a fresh no pack on the south shore. just eight on the vineyard.

behind us, at this home at 240 essex street, quite involved, firefighters have their hands full. at about 5:00 a.m., the call came in and when firefighters arrived, one set of crews went upstairs and the second downstairs. during that initial attack that some of the firefighters were overcome with smoke and heat. they had to go everybody out. three firefighters were trapped inside. some other firefighters were able to help the firefighters out of the building. suffering just minor injuries . a very close call for these firefighters this morning. we are just learning this new information, one of the to his back. the people inside the fire were able to get out on their own, to the state fire marshal.

saugus firefighters and surrounding departments have their hands full, it is far from out as you can see from these heavy smoke and fire still inside. is closed. emily: breaking news the un security council will hold an emergency meeting today after an alarming claim from north korea. the rogue nation says they successfully tested their first hydrogen bomb. seismic activity was detected at a known nuclear test site there. some nuclear experts are expressing doubt due to the estimated size of the explosion , saying perhaps a simpler, less powerful bomb was tested. south korea says maybe an atomic bomb. in response, a security council spokesperson said we condemn any violation of un security council resolutions and again call on north korea to abide by its international obligations and commitments. u.s. officials say it could take days to determine exactly what

todd: the mother of bella bond will be in court at suffolk superior, arraigned on charges in connection with the death of her -- her daughter. rachelle bond accused of being an accessory after the fact in the murder of the two-year-old. she is facing larceny charges for allegedly continued to use public assistance meant for her daughter after the girls death. bella was found washed ashore on deer island in june of last year, identified three months later. rachelle bond' s boyfriend is also charged in the murder. live in boston, talk to steve inch -- todd. emily: we investigate the death the highway. found in the woods between the offices, the man' s identity has not been released. randy: the boston globe tries to

a dangerousness hearing on friday. emily: a state trooper from royalston has been convicted of assault and battery against his girlfriend. corey benoit was convicted yesterday of shoving the victim into a wall last august, and breaking her collarbone. the fight started over a loud stereo. benoit, who has been suspended without pay since august, is sentenced to one year probation. a christian college professor suspended for saying christians and muslims worship the same god could soon be fired. wheaton college in illinois taking steps to release a tenured professor, who made the comment to show solidarity for the two religions. college officials and hawkins have tried to work out their differences, but the school says those efforts have reached an impasse. randy: the al jazeera television station is facing defamation lawsuits over accusations it made against several professional athletes. the american tv network claimed the athletes used performance-enhancing drugs. major league baseball players ryan zimmerman and ryan howard filed separate lawsuits against the company.

high pressure building in so sunny skies all day and light winds. just above freezing by 10:00 a.m. and likely touching 40 degrees this afternoon with wall-to-wall sunshine and upper-30' s the highs in worcester hills and low-40' s around lawrence, marshfield and on cape cod. a nice winter afternoon, tonight, in the 20' s, our coldest suburbs in the teens. overall, more mild and mostly sunny skies tomorrow. moisture with a storm gathered to our south and west, an increase in clouds on friday and low level moisture working from the north and east that eventually could lead to a touch of drizzle on saturday and may be cold enough early saturday, north and west of boston, especially outside 495 for some to freeze on contact, so it could be a little slippery on saturday but sunday is the weather weekend day, when the storm strengthens to our west and increasing the wins and that will bring in milder air.
