we begin with jack harper, live in dorchester. jack? police officer, we are happy to report, is ok, will recover, he is at the hospital. he was shot in the leg. he was involved in a drug operation when he confronted the suspect. the suspect identified as kurt stock injured -- -- the suspect to divide as grant headley. grant headley is well-known. he has a record of drug charges including, we are told, gun charges in his past. the officer radioed into dispatch. >> in am at --

i am told by two sources the officer was involved in a drug investigation, had observed a known suspect. they had seen him last week. they knew he did not have a license or they saw him driving. we are told the suspect got out shooting when they went to pull him over. that is when officers were able to take him into custody and recover the weapon. we are waiting to hear from the police commissioner and the mayor, who will be speaking here in a short time. again, relief at boston medical center that this officer is expected to be ok. erika: thank you for that. we want to turn to antoinette antonio. emily: the area is in lockdown, isn' t it? reporter: we are close to where the suspect was taken into

you see the yellow and red police day. this is 201 geneva avenue, where these suspect was taken into custody. just steps away from that area, here, and we' re told the school is currently in lockdown. that was confirmed by the school and parents we spoke with just moments ago. a lot of them said that they heard about this news in the area, heard it on twitter, heard it on the news, and they decided on their own to come down and check on their children and some of them even picked their kids out. >> it is very scary to me. this is a safe area for my child , as it would be for any kid, but you have something like this happen so close to the

as soon as it begins, we will bring it to you live. >> moving on to the news of the day. new steps to find out what happened inside a north andover chemical plant. an explosion there injuring 5 people. newscenter 5' s todd kazakiewich is live at the scene with the latest on the investigation. todd: we got an update from the andover fire marshal. they are still working to isolate the chemical. the plant remains closed until investigators can figure out what went wrong. this morning firefighters carried extra air tanks as they walked to the source of the explosion inside the dow chemical plant in north andover. the explosion happened in a lab production of led lights. five employees were hurt.

three injured by the blast in the chemical they were working >> they did a lot of remediation yesterday. they cleared the room, and the investigation teams can get in problem. lot of damage to the lab. the working. is the explosion happened when the chemical was exposed to air or water. >> there was a certain amount of pressure that knocked in the wall out. that room did suffer a certain amount of damage. todd: air quality tests came back normal, saavedra not believe any toxic chemicals were released into the atmosphere -- they do not believe that any toxic chemicals were released into the atmosphere.

the suspect has been locked up on prior firearm charges. he was locked up in 2012. he was released in april last year. he is out on probation. he was selling drugs. that is why he was pulled over. i want to commend my officers. i think they were fortunate here that we do not have an officer who suffered a more severe injury. this time. he is in icu at this time. the officers have done a great job. i also want to commend my fellow quick to respond. good. our officers were equipped with turn it gets. they were able to put that turn
