phil: the powerball jackpot now topping $800 million. by the time the numbers are drawn, the grand prize could very well be over $1 billion. the drawing is tomorrow night at 11:00. we will have those numbers right here on newscenter 5. jc: harvey joins us. changes ahead for the weekend, but i guess we are not talking about the cold? harvey: we really are not, especially when we talk about the big precipitation on sunday. it may be a little below freezing tonight, but nothing like that -- it is cloudy everywhere. notice, still near the freezing mark in spots along the north and west of 495. the coastal areas will stay above freezing tonight with the wind direction, but it may bring an spotty missed, or that -- spotty mist, or that will be able to be produced.

it started at this traffic light, an argument escalating quickly. roman drag the man out of his car and stabbed him several times. >> people started throwing blankets on him. nicole: roman took off, but witnesses were able to provide police a partial plate number. that led police to his somerset home thursday. >> it' s crazy that road read -- road rage gets that bad. nicole: we know the victim is back in surgery at boston medical center, being treated again for several stab wins. nicole asked if on, wcvb newscenter 5. jc: maine governor paul lepage is known for saying what he thinks and now he is under fire for racially tinged comments about drug dealers. >> these are guys with names like d-mon

>> you are watching newscenter 5 at 5:30. jc: crews in new york tonight preparing to remove the elevator from the salt mine where 17 workers got stuck. the workers were trapped hundreds of feet underground for 10 hours in frigid temperatures yesterday. investigators say a beam that kept the elevator car in line either broke or bent. a crane was brought in to lift the workers up with a basket. all 17 workers were rescued. phil: a chicago bound flight diverted after an assault onboard. part of that incident caught on camera. abc' s marci gonzalez with the chaos on that plane. marci: police questioning this woman after an in-flight

landing. >> we need assistance. marci: the united express flight with 69 passengers and four crew members took off from new york laguardia airport as to after 7 p.m. headed for chicago. 30 minutes into the flight, the passenger reportedly asked if she could get off the plane. when a flight attendant said no -- be passenger -- a passenger claimed the woman lost control. >> she went crazy, started scratching her face up, return it was soft. marci: at one point, she reportedly yelled that she was bipolar. she started attacking another woman. three passengers step diane. >> we subdued her tying her up with seatbelts and a guy used her neck -- his necktie. marci: the flight was diverted to detroit where police were waiting.

phil: the mother of the fugitive teen who successfully use the affluenza defense after killing four people in a drunk driving arrest is being held in texas. investigators say tonya couch and her son then went on the run after he violated his probation. he is in mexico fighting extradition. jc: a truck stuck in a miami sinkhole caused a water main break during rush hour yesterday afternoon. the break caused severe flooding in the area. witnesses said they heard an explosion and came out to see rushing water. a tow truck removed the stuck truck from the hole.

flooding reached his auto shop and caused about $50,000 in damage. firefighters in australia are working to put out massive brush fires. so far, flames have destroyed nearly buildings in the small 100 town of yarloop. there are no mandatory evacuations, but officials are urging people to leave, or to actively defend their properties. phil: dozens of locations all across america may have the same type of cable that caused the explosion on a rhode island beach last summer. the explosion was probably created by a corroded, in active coast guard cable. a woman was thrown out of her beach chair and broke two ribs. there may be cables in dozens of states, but they will not know unless they dig. there are no such cable suspected in massachusetts. jc: a massive animal rescue in the atlantic. hundreds of endangered sea turtles essentially paralyzed by cold water have been saved along the north carolina coast.

hypothermia which causes them to , move more slowly. the turtles then get pushed back to the shoreline by wind and several area aquariums have taken them in. the sea turtles will be nursed back to health and released into warmer waters. camera. a snowy owl flying right by the camera lens. you can see the lens and then right past it. the owl was caught by a traffic camera in montreal. experts say it was probably hunting prey and looking for a good place to purge. phil: i could be wrong, but i think you made eye contact. jc: yes. phil: el nio storm dropping snow and rain out west. the skiers are loving the conditions. it added at least a foot of snow in california' s mountains. 30 inches of snow in the past 48 hours alone. jc: 2015 was a wild and dangerous weather year in the u.s. the national weather service says there were 10 weather

from our record snow fall last winter to record flooding in charleston south carolina in august. 155 people died from weather-related causes last year. 2015 was the second warmest year on record for the u.s. the first is 2012. so, now we are into 2016 and we will have to see what 2016 holds for all this. phil: it probably does not feel that warm to everybody because of the winter we had, indeed it was. harvey: it was certainly an eventful year. no question about 2015. hours snowy winter, and all time record , 110.6 inches of snow. it' s interesting when you compare where we are now to last year at this time. we are under an inch of snow in boston.

at this time and ended up with 110.6. by the way, the average would be 13.6. but we are in an el nio. when you get the el nio, it juices of the seven jet stream. the gulf coast, usually the southeast gets wet. the northern jet stream is a little farther north. that certainly happened in december, and that' s why we have the warmest december on record. however, there are signs of a change. the poll is getting ready to' s dart southward -- two start southward. we will see how that goes. let' s talk about the current weather situation. 40 in boston. still around freezing in worcester. the wind is off the water, so it will stay around freezing along the coast, but the ocean air may introduce pockets of drizzle.

icy spots on the north and west parts of 495, overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. we will see temperatures start above freezing along the coast, but near or under inland, and then well below everywhere, so -- well above everywhere, so any ice potential will be alleviated. we are waiting for a storm down here. imagery, kind of spinning of the gulf of mexico. that is our big rain baker -- rainmaker for sunday. as we get to sunday, that is when the next storm starts to come up and it will carry a lot of moisture, wind, and warmth, heavy that comes through. there could even be embedded thunderstorms and strong wind gusts, especially if we get heavy downpours and a thunderstorm. the potential is there for over

all occurring during sunday, the meaningful rain, and then the winds start to pick up on monday and especially along southeastern mass, the higher elevation could the 40, 50 gusts per hour. the wind will be behind the storm as we start turning much colder at that time. it should make the 50' s boston, south, and even northward. those strong southerly winds will come in before the storm exit sunday night and allows the colder weather to return. there you go. just want to point out sunday -- to give you an idea of the timeline we' re talking about -- late morning, early afternoon, heavy downpours. the wind gusts will be very high as well and temperatures unusually warm. big change starts as quickly as monday. jetstream back to the colder side. all of next week looks like it

touch of snow tuesday afternoon or night. does not look like elements will come together for anything to significant, and the cold weather will lock in following that. jc? jc: thanks so much. we all find loose change, right? but this rare dime is worth a whole lot more than 10 cents. that' has paid for this rare dime that dates back to 1894. the san francisco mint made about 2.5 million of these dimes , but only 19 went into s because a financial crisis back in 1893 killed demand for new coinage, and almost all the dimes were melted down. phil: the family of late singer natalie cole revealing what caused her death. they released a statement saying that the singer died of a rare lung disease that led eventually to heart failure. she had responded well to treatment for years.

jc: some sad news from the new york fire department today. twenty, the dalmation donated to ladder 20 after the 9/11 attacks has died. , the company lost 7 members on the 35th floor of the north tower on september 11. the dog became their mascot and companion. the fdny has posted tribute to her on facebook it has been shared tens of thousands of times. caught on dash cam, a pair of

deliver a baby on the parkway. this happened early monday morning. the mom realized she would not make it to the hospital. her husband driving called 911, and within minutes, they delivered the baby girl and both cut her umbilical cord before handing her over. mom and baby are doing well tonight. phil: phil: a very special surrogate making headlines tonight. a 54-year-old texas woman now a viral sensation after giving birth to her grandaughter. newscenter 5' s erika tarantal explains she was acting as a surrogate for her daughter, who struggled for years to have a baby. erika: three generations brought together by the ultimate labor of love. >> she gave is the best gift ever. erika: after years of infertility and miscarriages, kelly was desperate to become a mother. that is when her mom ballinger to be a surrogate. >> this opportunity came up.

this was a case of a man who was a drug dealer. he does not live here. they tried to stop him, and they say he jumped up shooting. >> they began to fire unprovoked of the officer. jack: the officer, a nine-year veteran, was very lucky. he was hit in the leg and others were all over him to hell. commissioner evans: they had a tourniquet and they were able to put that tourniquet on the officer. jack: grant headley , the suspect, well-known known to police. he came out of the car lasting. >> i am at mount boy wdoin, shot. >> he seemed to be ok. jack: evans praising his men for staying cool and taking the suspect on injured.
