his lengthy record dates back to 2005 when he was just 16 years old. he was caught illegally carrying a gun. he pleaded guilty and served one year behind bars. four years later, another weapons charge. he had a gun, ammunition, and a large capacity magazine. also that year, he was twice charged with possession and intent to distribute. he was also charged with a motor vehicle violation and he had several ebt cards belonging to other people. he told officers he bought the cards on the street. live in dorchester, karen anderson, 5 investigates. jc: new at six ago, the head of the boston police union says this is a reminder of what

. and it should be a reminder that. >> it is far too common to take shots at police officers. the public has to step up. we are the targets. we are the men and women protecting you, this city. the public should not stand for this. jc: the shooting happened blocks from the school and that created some nervous hours for parents. the abc-d head start progran was put into lockdown. parents were called and told not to worry, the kids were safe. but that didn' t stop some from heading to the school to get their kids out. >> this is a good school. they usually shut things down when something like this happens. >> i just wanted to make sure he was ok. >> but as a mother -- >> you were not staying home? >> no. >> his security is the number one priority to me. not knowing what was going on, i had to come get my son.

blocks from mount bowdoin terrace part of a quiet family , oriented neighborhood with historic homes. phil: new at 6:00, lessons learned during the marathon bombing may have helped save the leg of the officer injured today. newscenter 5' s juli mcdonald is live at boston medical center, where he' s hospitalized tonight. juli: as we' ve seen and the video of the officer arriving to boston medical center, he looks to be in fairly good condition. he is sitting upright and talking to those around him. commissioner evans says he is extremely great role to fellow officers -- grateful to fellow officers who were able to control his bleeding quickly. boston police and city leaders praising the brave and quick response of its officers today, not just getting a known suspect and gone off the street -- commissioner evans: they were able to tackle the suspect and confiscate the automatic handgun and bring him into custody

juli: but also for their simultaneous response and controlling the injuries of the officer who had been shot. commissioner evans: our officers are equipped with tourniquets. juli: he was bleeding significantly and a tourniquet like this one may have saved his leg, if not his life. they have only been carrying them for three to six months. it was a decision made following the boston marathon bombing, when emergency responders and bystanders used else and anything they could think of to save lives. the officer had immediate access to his own tourniquet and help from other officers. commissioner evans: he tried to do it initially, because we carry that equipment.

hazmat crews spent nearly 24 hours methodically clearing the dow chemical plant. it is believed that trimethyl aluminum reacted to water, causing the lotion. >> there is nothing leading us to believe this is something other than a tragic industrial action -- accident. sera: four workers suffering injuries, three flown to boston hospitals. no word on their condition. >> hopefully we will be able to have interviews with the severely injured and we will be able to shed some additional light and information on it. sera: a dell spokesperson says that the company is cooperating with investigators. the victims have not been identified. but they were experienced and longtime colleagues. live in north andover, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. phil: we certainly know that you are all dreaming about that huge powerball jackpot.

he has been on the run for seven months. he was captured after a wild shootout with mexican marines. according to authorities, he did not go down without a fight. five people were killed in today' s shootout. jc: closer to home trustees at a , prestigious rhode island boarding school say there will be a new investigation into sex abuse cases. dozens of former students came forward this week saying they were sexually assaulted at st. george' s school in the 70' s and 80' s. after weeks of public pressure, the school will appoint a new independent investigator to oversee the investigation. the board is hoping to appoint someone next week. norovirus shuts down a central massachusetts elementary school. 20 children at winchendon called in -- alma driscoll called in sick.
