>> our officers are all equipped with tourniquets. he tried to do his initially. all our officers have it. then a fellow uniformed officer who was nearby heard the call. he tied it off. antoinette: those tourniquets were issued to officers in the last 3-6 months, and commissioner evans says this one likely saved the officer's leg. that officer, who has not been publicly identified, is being treated at boston medical center. headley is expected to be arraigned on monday. in our next half-hour, "5 investigates" digs deeper into the suspected shooter's background. our karen anderson explores the lengthy criminal history and some crimes that happened just steps from the shooting. doug: a wareham man with a lengthy criminal history is held without bail after police say he tried to stab a man with a carving fork. this happened early friday morning in south yarmouth. a woman called police to tell them her friend, alector varela, attacked her boyfriend inside a

after his arrest, police say he became belligerent and assaulted officers inside his jail cell. he's expected to face several charges in court on monday. worcester police make a second arrest in the murder of a woman. cherise hill was stabbed to death last month on murray avenue. helped police track down the two 18-year-old kevin miranda was charged yesterday in connection with the stabbing. police say he held the victim's arms back while luis-melendez rivas stabbed the woman 19 times. antoinette: we are hearing the calls for help after a road rage incident that ended with a stabbing. mario roman is being held on $150,000 bail after pleading not guilty yesterday. police say he got into a fight with another driver near granite street in braintree on thursday. roman allegedly pulled the victim out of his car and stabbed him several times before taking off. >> there was a fight out here by barnes and noble.

however, he is bleeding. i don't know if he has wounds. the other car drove off. antoinette: the victim is hospitalized after having surgery. he is expected to survive. new details this morning in a wild chase that ended in middleborough. state police say they were looking for the 26-year-old westboro man for a well-being check. that's when they say he refused to pull over and sped up. during the chase from cape cod, the man was able to signal to police that he needed medical attention. they say he eventually surrendered peacefully. state police will file charges when the suspect is released from the hospital. doug: commitment 2016. another controversy at a rally for republican candidate donald trump. this time in south carolina. rose hamid was escorted out of the event last night. she stood up silently when trump suggested that syrian refugees are affiliated with isis. trump supporters started boo-ing her and yelling things like,

in those states. antoinette: we're seeing some wet weather of our own along with some pretty warm temperatures coming tomorrow. mike: we're talking about january. we're talking about rain. antoinette: and not snow. glass half full. mike: not even a question. usually you'll have maybe snow inland. no, this is rain all the way tomorrow. this morning though we do have a little bit of light snow out there and really emphasis on the word "light." because this is barely showing up on radar. the steadiest is around marlborough and towards rutland just south of sterling at this point. this is drifting its way eastward but ever so slowly. as we warm things up and as this area tries to push its way closer to the coast where the temperatures are warmer, it changes over to a little bit of light drizzle out there. be cautious. there might be a slippery spot here or there. not a big issue. that will be a bit of a problem this morning. there you see the little pocket we're talking about. there's more out to the west but base igally we have to wait for

that won't happen until we get to tomorrow and tomorrow it's going to be warm. it is going to be windy but it going to be extremely rainy across here. you can pick up an inch of rain across the whole thing. easterly winds will keep up all day today. that is just pushing that moisture in off the ocean. there will be spotty drizzle out there most of the day today. high temperatures, well, current temperatures right now are hold inning the mid 30's, the low 30s. here are the pockets we're talking about through orange and worcester, jaffrey. 32 degrees. that means untreated surfaces could be a little bit icy out there. otherwise you get close er to the coast or down towards the cape. readings are well above the freezing mark and not an issue. temperatures won't climb that much. we'll call it 38-46 for a high temperature. cloudy skies and spot drizzle. that easterly wind will keep bringing that temperature right in off the ocean but that wind switches around later on tonight so our temperatures don't drop off. we'll see rain coming in after midnight. otherwise cloudy skies and watch for the fog to develop as well. you h break it down for you on the timeline. today as i mentioned there could be a little bit of spotty

karen: sources tell "5 investigates" grant headley was a known gang member here in the city of boston with a lengthy criminal history dating back at least a decade, and he had just been released from prison after serving a five-year sentence on gun charges. sources tell "5 investigates" 27-year-old grant headley has had 40 criminal arraignments in the city of boston. his lengthy record dates back to at least 2005 when he was just 16 years old. the youth violence strike force caught him illegally carrying a gun. he pleaded guilty and served just one year behind bars. four years later in 2009, another weapons charge. police say he had a gun, ammunition, and a large capacity magazine. also that year headley was twice charged with drug possession with intent to distribute. the arrests near a public playground. headley was also arrested for a motor vehicle violation, and police found him with several e.b.t. cards belonging to other people.

the cards on the street. in the same neighborhood as today's shooting. one just a three-minute walk from the scene. in dorchester, karen anderson, "5 investigates." doug: federal authorities are trying to figure out the motive behind an ambush on a police officer in philadelphia. surveillance video captures the attack as police say edward archer rushes to a cruiser and fires several shots inside at officer jesse hartnett. officer hartnett incredibly manages to radio in for help. he then gets out of the car and fires back at the shooter, hitting him at least three times. >> his will to live undoubtedly saved his life. >> this is absolutely one of the scariest things i've ever seen. i mean, this guy tried to execute the police officer. doug: police arrested archer and say he told them he follows allah and pledged allegiance to the islamic state. the f.b.i. is involved in the investigation but has not labeled it a terror attack. incredibly officer hartnett is

recovery. the worcester toddler allegedly beaten by his mother's boyfriend nearly died according to prosecutors. johnny sanchez was deemed too dangerous to be released at his hearing yesterday. the three-year-old boy was allegedly in his care when the injuries happened. he was brought to the hospital on new year's day and needed surgery. the boy remains there this morning. his mother says she believes sanchez was upset that the boy wet the bed. antoinette: right now police are investigating a crash in malden. this was the scene late last night on lynn street. two cars collided, one of them flipping over. no word on any injuries this morning or what caused the crash. the scene of a chemical explosion is now clear in north andover. that blast sending four workers to the hospital. the state police bomb squad removed the container holding the material that ignited at the dow chemical plant thursday. control of the building has now been returned to the company. state fire investigators have begun trying to figure out

>> the further investigation will really depend upon the timing that we can have interviews with the severely injured. hopefully, they will recover and will be able to shed some additional light and information on it. antoinette: the four workers suffered critical injuries in the explosion. doug: a hingham police officer suspended from duty has now lost his pay. our partners at "the patriot ledger" report that selectmen took pay and benefits away from sergeant kris phillips on thursday. he was suspended after an investigation found he lied about an injury he claimed he suffered on patrol. he's been collecting $2,000 a week since last july. phillips will be arraigned on january 14 on insurance fraud charges. antoinette: new this morning. the mbta and two contractors will settle a lawsuit this week with riders who say they were wrongly ticketed. the riders claim they were ticketed for unpaid parking fees at commuter stations after paying the now-antiquated honor boxes.

with receipts proving they paid. "the globe" reports documents recently filed in federal court in boston show all drivers who were ticketed on or before july 6 for unpaid fees are now eligible for the settlement. a hearing is scheduled for march 14 to determine how much this will cost the mbta. doug: new budget cuts announced by governor charlie baker. yesterday afternoon, baker announced the $49 million in cuts. the trim affects mainly grants for hospitals and community health centers. many on beacon hill expected larger cuts to chop the $38 billion deficit. the administration is anticipating a $320 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year. antoinette: a plymouth woman accused of animal neglect has been denied appeal. heidi erickson was convicted in december 2010 of animal abuse regarding eight cats in her home. the cats were malnourished, sickly, and covered in feces. erickson served 90 days in jail. she was previously convicted of
