"eyeopener." randy: it's 5:00 a.m. also on this monday morning cambridge native matt damon coming up big at the golden globes and the other memorable moments including a stunt worthy of steve harvey. good morning to you. i'm randy price. emily: and i'm emily riemer along with cindy fitzgibbon. a chilly start. much different than yesterday. cindy: yesterday's record highs in the 50's. that's not happening today. we're actually going to get back some sunshine. emily: all right, good. cindy: the winds are bringing in dryer air but they're still quite gusty this morning gusting over 20 and 30 miles per hour. the temperatures have been dropping here through the overnight. we're below freezing now out through worcester county. just 30 degrees worcester, orange on up to keene and new hampshire as well. just be mindful of the fact that with temperatures dropping below freezing you may encounter one or two slick spots out there this morning. you get closer to boston and the coastline it's in the upper 30's and lower 40's. notice the skies here are

we'll see lake-effect snow from new york state into northern new england. not going to bother us here with high pressure nosing on in. the flow around that is from the west. you can see the temperatures in the single digits, teens, 20 to our west. so that is what it is feeding on in. it is actually warmer right now than it will be late morning and into the afternoon. temperatures will be dropping, settling back down to near freezing by lunchtime. that's where we hold through the afternoon. although the highs will be in the 30's today, you want to dress for temperatures that will feel no higher than the 20's with those gusty winds giving a chilly wind chill throughout the day. take you out to the roads this morning. maybe one or two icy spots to the north and west this morning. olessa: be careful for that. a live look outside starting things off at the zakim and the leverett connector no problems. let's go to the maps and check the rest of your ride. south of town we're watching one problem spots in kingston on route 3 northbound by route 3a, a tractor trailer there lost its fuel tank which is now leaking in the right lane. one lane is closed. i'll keach you post od that and let you know when it reopens.

he was 69 years old. bowie's career spanned five decades turning into an icon of he just released a new album on friday. that was also his birthday. randy, emily? randy: right now the man accused of shooting this boston police officer is preparing to face a judge. and we are getting new details on that officer's recovery. kazakiewich is live at the courthouse in boston with all of that information. todd. morning. that boston police officer is now out of the hospital, recovering at home, after he was shot in the leg last week. the man who allegedly shot him prepares for an ain rainment is preparing for his day in court. as newscenter 5 was first to report officer kurt stokinger pulled over suspected drug dealer grant headley on friday in dorchester. a warrant was out for his arrest for violating probation. he was serving for gun charges. police say headley, who was driving without a license, got out of the car and started firing at the nine-year veteran officer. headley took off, and responding officers chased him down. headley will be arraigned in

charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. as for officer stokinger, we're told he's at home resting comfortably. live in dorchester, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now the man charged with killing the little girl once known as baby doe is getting ready to head back to court. michael mccarthy will be arraigned on a murder charge in the death of bella bond. mccarthy is the boyfriend of bella's mother, rachelle; she is charged as an accessory. the body of the toddler was found in a plastic bag on deer island back in june. right now worcester police are investigating another hit-and-run that hurt two people. it happened last night on southbridge street. it's not clear how badly the victims were injured. webster police were investigating a car found in that town, but it's not clear if that ended up being connected to the crash. randy: 5:05. commitment 2016.

donald trump still holds a strong lead here in new hampshire. but a new poll show he's trailing rival ted cruz in iowa by four points. >> i don't intend to send jack boots to knock on your door and every door in america. randy: on sunday cruz knocked trump's signature plan to deport millions of americans. trump, meanwhile, kept up the pressure on cruz again questioning if his being born in canada endangers his right to be president. the race also tightening in both early voting states on the democratic side. hillary clinton trails bernie sanders in new hampshire and is just ahead of him in iowa. sanders: i think we're gaining steam here in iowa. i think we have an excellent chance to win here. clintion: these polls go up; they go down. i stay pretty focused. randy: both clinton and sanders are campaigning in iowa today with less than a month before caucus voters cast their votes. windham. it starts at 11:00 a.m.

boston today. the former first daughter will "evening with chelsea." she's headed to new hampshire for three events tomorrow to focus on hillary clinton's plans to expand early childhood education and women's rights. women's rights also at the forefront of a big endorsement for the democratic frontrunner. it is the first time planned parenthood has ever picked a candidate in a primary. clinton: planned parenthood should be funded, supported, and appreciated not undermined, misrepresented, and demonized. randy: the group's president says they got into the race early because of what she called "extreme positions" taken by republican candidates. most g.o.p. hopefuls want to cut federal funding for planned parenthood, a measure that has already passed in the u.s. house. emily: right now that interview featuring a drug lord and a hollywood star is at the center of a growing investigation. this morning, the process of extraditing the man known as el chapo is officially underway. the eye's erika tarantal is

comes in. erika: it was dreams of hollywood that ultimately landed notorious drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman back in custody. some three months ago meeting with academy award winning actor sean penn. penn and mexican actress kate del castillo now both under investigation for the interview detailed in rolling stone magazine. "el chapo," trying to land a movie deal about his life, was shopping the idea to producers and actors. all it got him was a new pair of handcuffs after being rearrested friday following a shootout and attempted escape in a sewer. the mexican attorney general's office confirms the formal start of extradition to the u.s. is underway. as for penn, the department of justice is not commenting, but he may be considered a journalist in this case. >> we'll let somebody else sort out what sean penn did and didn't do. el chapo's where he should be. erika: the extradition process for guzman likely to be lengthy as his lawyers will no doubt put up a big fight to try to keep him in mexico where he's managed

prisons twice. emily: right now, boston police first homicide of 2016. the shooting happened early sunday morning on falcon street in east boston. the victim's identity has not yet been released. no arrests are reported. the woman accused of driving drunk and slamming into a weymouth police cruiser is due in court today. police say 25-year-old kaylin kaiser crossed the center line on main street early sunday morning. she and a passenger were treated for minor injuries. the officer was treated at a local hospital and released. randy: today the mbta will be focused on the expensive green line extension project. the fiscal control board will discuss the future of the plan, which was recently put in jeopardy by a new cost estimate. it's now expected to cost $3 billion to expand the trolley line into medford and somerville. an update on the 2016 fiscal budget will also be discussed at

cindy: the rain yesterday. oh, my gosh, did it come down! buckets of it. we had one to two inches or more of rain across the area. a lot of spots over two inches. nantucket, brewster on the cape. southern worcester county. north of boston, haverill had over two inches of snow officially in boston just under an inch-and-a-half. it was a wind-swept soaking rain. record warm temperatures. 58, brand new record in boston. these are all record highs that were set yesterday. got as warm as 61 in hartford, connecticut. hour. so pretty wild yesterday. that storm is now departing. in its wake still an active wind out of the west. winds gusting 20, 30 miles per hour this morning. and that wind is going to be with us all day long. so wind chills will get no higher than the 20's today. day. we'll get back some sunshine. fairly short lived though as we are watching a quick-moving system that is going to bring in light snow for many of us by the end of the day tomorrow. right now we're seeing the skies

will be lake-effect snow bands coming out of new york state across northern new england as high pressure to the south kind of feeds those in on a westerly wind. this right here though is what i'm watching as we head into the day tomorrow and in the system across the great lakes, you can see temperatures running in the single digits, teens, 20's so that's the colder air that is feeding on in. it's a little deceiving out the door this morning. you look at these temperatures. 37 boston. 39 in plymouth. we're still in the low 40's on the cape. but we have dropped below freezing now out through worcester county. so just be mindful there could be one or two icy spots around this morning. with that westerly wind, notice the temperatures tick being down through the morning hours. we'll settle back to near the freezing mark in boston and hold there right through the afternoon. so we are going to notice that wind chill dropping down through the 20's and holding there through the afternoon. so do dress for that today. it will be kind of a blustery day. you can see a good amount of sunshine here right on through this evening. the skies mainly clear. and then overnight a couple of clouds start to work on in. notice the temperatures dropping

tonight. but it will be cold tomorrow morning when you're waking up. that cold air is in place as that fast-moving storm system approaches, and it is going to allow a quick burst of rain and snow across the area before it really wraps up a little too far east. not a big storm. coating to maybe an inch of snow inside of 95 toward the coastline. you get outside of that. it could be one or two inches of snow. it doesn't look like a big deal at all. but the timing not great for tomorrow. i think the morning hours are just fine. take a look here is as the lunchtime. by 3:00 in the afternoon rain area. then a steadier snow developmenting through the evening commute out through the worcester area. that burst of snow is going to work toward the coastline by the mid to late evening hours. and then overnight everything will be winding down. we'll clear it out on wednesday. blustery, cold, with strong winds wednesday. quiet through friday. next weekend i have the chance of rain or snow in there both saturday or sunday. a lot of question marks surrounding the storm potential next weekend.

>> this bride's twin sister was leaning out on the balcony saying help me. so one of the wedding patrons scaled the building and got her out somehow. then another guest at the wedding, how she lived, i don't know. she was in a room right above where the fire was. i guess they had to take her down on a ladder. it was horrible. randy: the nearby historic publick house did not burn, and yesterday's wedding did go on even though it was delayed. the property's general manager says he's looking into reports that smoke alarms in one room didn't go off. right now a murder investigation is underway after an american woman is found dead in florence. 35-year-old ashley olsen's body was discovered in her apartment. no word yet on autopsy results, but authorities say the florida woman did have bruises and scratches on her neck. police have scoured her building for clues and questioned her boyfriend and friends but have

>> i started breaking the ice trying to make a path to get to the kids. one was bobbing out of the water. i didn't know there was another kid in there. >> he had his eyes closed and wasn't breathing. emily: the 12-year-old was in the water several minutes longer before brockton firefighters pulled him out. randy: we're following breaking news on the north shore in gloucester. the "eyeopener"'s doug meehan is there with what has turned out to be a deadly fire. doug: it has. good morning, randy. we're at the corner of main street and hammond. hammond right around the corner is the home where that fire broke out just after 3:00 this morning. we have some video we can show you from earlier. the call coming in at about 3:12 of a home fully involved. firefighters arriving on scene. they were able to make their way to the top of the stairs, but

it was at that point that the fire went to two alarms. they are not releasing the name of the deceased because the family members have not been notified just yet. as a matter of fact, they're still trying to i.d. the person. again, just that one fatality. nobody else was at home at the time. the firefighters right now have contained that fire. it's knocked down. they are just now waiting on the state fire marshal's office to arrive and begin the investigation, but at this time, to repeat, one person fatally injured in this fire here on hammond street in gloucester. we don't know what caused that fire to start. but nobody else was injured. we're still waiting on more information as it becomes available we'll certainly pass its along to you. that's the latest from gloucester. i'm during meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: a suspect will be arraigned today charged in a deadly hit-and-run in malden. it happened on christmas

71-year-old yaai chen was struck in a crosswalk on pleasant street. it happened near the assisted living facility where she lived. investigators have not released the name of the suspect. randy: this morning we are hearing from a women's hockey player who suffered a severe spinal injury during the winter classic. denna laing posted this picture on facebook taken hours before the boston pride took the ice at gillette stadium on new year's eve. laing went head-first into the boards during the first period. laing writes, "for a long time i have been looking for a new challenge. even though i was not expecting it to be this, here we go. i don't want you to feel bad for me. this is a moment to remember for women's hockey. we made history that day, and i would never take those moments back." laing has limited movement in her arms and no feeling in her legs. doctors are not sure about her long-term prognosis. a new test could make it easier than ever to detect and treat cancer.

deadly fire in gloucester. emily: we'll get an update from him in just a moment. but first cindy has your forecast. much colder today than yesterday for us. cindy: we're going to be getting a little taste of what our friends off to the west have. zero! look at minneapolis. there was a game yesterday with the vikings. so cold. one of the coldest in nfl history. some of that cold is working on in. what a shock after yesterday, right? record highs yesterday well up into the 50's boston, worcester, providence, portland, maine all setting records. 61 in hartford yesterday. and here we sit this morning still hanging on to the lower 40's on the cape. even boston is 37 degrees, but look at the temperature trend over the next 12 hours. we're actually dropping down below freezing by late morning and then holding pretty close to the freezing mark this afternoon. at least we're getting back some sunshine. the clouds breaking apart this morning. also below freezing in spots through worcester county. do watch out. there could be one or two icy spots. our storm sitting to the north

high pressure to the south. in between it's feeding in the colder air with the westerly wind. lake-effect snows going on new york state and northern new england. we'll see clouds breaking for notice those temperatures dropping so we're hovering near freezing this afternoon. but with the wind blowing, look at these wind chills, teens 20 around lunchtime and wind chills holding in the teens to around that's what you want to dress for. overnight our low temperatures, they'll be dropping down into the teens and lower 20's. overnight. we're watching a little clipper system off to the west. this is going to race toward us tomorrow so by day's end rain and snow showers breaking out across the area. this storm will intensify wednesday morning but off shore. so not going to be a big storm for us. it happens too far east. move in tomorrow. rain and snow showers by 3:00 p.m. steadier snow for the evening commute in worcester county. that will be working eastward during the evening hours so there may be some minor coatings where we see that rain change over to snow around boston and the coastline but an inch or two

fire was contained through the second floor. the call coming in at 3:12 this morning of a home fully involve. firefighters arriving on scene made their way to the second floor. they were quickly turned back because the intense flames and heat, second alarm called in. again one person living here deceased as the result of the fire. too early to give a cause. we're just waiting on the coroner's office to come in as well as the state fire mall shas' office to begin the investigation to find out what happened. one one person was home at the time. they have not released the identity. family members have yet to be notified. live in gloucester, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: breaking news in the music world-- the passing of british rock icon david bowie. bowie's family taking to facebook and twitter overnight to share the sad news. his representatives say bowie died peacefully surrounded by family after an 18-month long battle with cancer. inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1996, his career spanned some five decades and he was still working.

called "blackstar" on friday which also happened to be his birthday. david bowie was 69 years old. todd? todd: erika, thank you. the boston police officer who was shot in the line of duty friday is now out of the hospital and home recovering. meantime, the man who allegedly shot the officer is preparing for arraignment later today here at dore dorchester district court. as newscenter 5 was first to report, officer kurt stokinger pulled over suspected drug dealer grant headley on friday in dorchester. a warrant had been out for headley's arrest for violating probation which he was serving for gun charges. police say headley, who was driving without a license, got out of the car and started firing striking the officer in the leg. headley was then captured by other officers. reporting live in dorchester, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: the man charged with killing the little girl once known as baby doe is getting ready to head back to court. michael mccarthy will be arraigned on a murder charge today in the death of bella

mccarthy is the boyfriend of bella's mother, rachelle. she is charged as an accessory. the toddler's body was found in a plastic bag on deer island in june. randy: worcester police are investigating a hit-and-run that hurt two people. it happened last night on southbridge street. it's not clear how badly the victims were injured. webster police were investigating a car found in that town, but it's not clear if that ended up being connected to the crash. emily: boston police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. sunday morning on falcon street in east boston. the victim's identity has not been released, and there is no word on any arrests. randy: "the boston globe" is with deliveries today. the paper issued a statement last week saying deliveries will be improved by today after some subscribers didn't get their papers for weeks. many had been delayed in getting their papers.

the delivery mess. a winchendon elementary school will reopen today after several students became sick with norovirus. memorial elementary was closed last week as workers disinfected the entire building. about a fifth of students and several teachers went home sick last week with flu-like symptoms. sick children are asked to stay at home today. the doors open in windham at 9:00 a.m. and the trump rally starts at 11:00. randy: a group of state lawmakers in maine is launching an impeachment investigation into the state's governor. paul lepage has apologized for racially charged comments he made about out-of-state drug dealers and white women in his state.

to be debated on the house floor on thursday. emily: president obama is preparing for his final state of the union address. he's expected to discuss economy growth and address terrorism fears in tomorrow's speech. you can watch it right here on wcvb. that starts at 9:00 tomorrow night on channel 5. randy: philadelphia police are looking into a tip that a radical group wants to harm officers. that's after this ambush of a police officer last week. the officer is expected to recover after being shot multiple times in his cruiser. the department says they received a tip that the suspect is one of many people affiliated with a radical group. the f.b.i. is investigating. the water crisis is getting worse in the city of flint, michigan. state troopers and officials there will start going door-to-door tomorrow to make bottled water and filter deliveries. the city's drinking water has been contaminated with lead since the water source was switched in 2014. the white house says it is monitoring the situation very closely. randy: sports to go. the patriots prepare for a playoff challenge. the kansas city chiefs come to

"the martian," starring cambridge-native matt damon, won for best comedy. damon took home best actor for that category. randy: we're drying out this morning. probably going to be freezing over. cindy: yeah. i mean there are big puddles from yesterday. the roads have been drying out a little bit overnight. the winds were so busy. but the temperatures are dropping. just be mindful of the fact that you may encounter one or two icy spots developing this morning. 37 degrees in boston. you're thinking that's not so bad, right? when you look at the winds gusting 20-30 miles per hour so already there is a wind chill.

winds are blowing from. they're blowing from the west. so as you look off to the west, it's colder. 20's, teens, single digits above and below zero. unfortunately this is the air mass that is working on toward us. so despite the fact that high pressure is going to give us some sunshine today as those clouds continue to break, those winds are really going to make it feel blustery. we've dropped to 30 degrees in worcester. 27 in orange. still lower 40's on the cape. but the trend with the temperatures is that they will tick down a few degrees from where we are right now even as the sunny merges throughout the day. notice wind chills by late morning, teens to around 20 degrees. wind chills getting no higher than the 20's through the afternoon. so that is what you want to dress for. you can see a good amount of sunshine throughout the day. we'll start the night clear with just a few patchy clouds by tomorrow morning. out the door tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the teens and lower 20's. that's without the wind chill so it's a cold start. we've got a little clipper system that will be racing toward us during the afternoon

redevelop and turn in to quite a potent storm but that happens too far to our east. this will not produce a lot of precipitation for us, but i think it's cold enough for an inch or two of snow north and west of interstate 95 tomorrow evening into tomorrow night. but it actually starts out as rain closer to the coastline so no more than a coating to an inch of snow. let me give you the timeline here again. the morning commute tomorrow is just fine. clouds thicken up by lunchtime. by about 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon, notice rain showers in eastern massachusetts mixing with snow showers to the west. then a burst of heavier snow it look like, steadier snow out through the worcester area for the evening commute. and then overnight that races toward the coastline. we'll clear it out on wednesday with gusty winds. it looks dry to the end of the week but by the weekend, a storm approaching. this one could be rain or snow and it could impact that big patriots game down at gillette. we'll keep a close eye on that. in the meantime, how are we doing on the roads. olessa: we're in pretty good shape. southbound side moving away. let's good to the maps and see the rest of your trip as you
