also this monday morning. coming up big at the golden the other memorable moments including a stunt worthy of steve harvey. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm randy price. emily: and i'm emily riemer along with cindy fitzgibbon. we have a cold start. much different than yesterday. highs. emily: it was balmy. cindy: it was in the upper 50's in january. not happening today. you want to dress for wind blustery. you can see how strong the winds are right now. gusting 20-30 miles per hour. these are have been helping to dry out some of the roads so minimizing the impact of any icy spots out there this morning but with those gusty winds kids are bundled up at the bus stop. temperatures in the mid 30's this morning. they're dropping by the time they're getting off the bus this afternoon. those wind chills will be in the teens and 20's this afternoon. today. we're dropping in the upper 20's through worcester county. merrimack valley. there could be one or two icy spots.

still hanging on to the lower 40's on cape cod. morning. we're going to get back to sunshine as high pressure noses in from the west. with our weekend storm still spinning to the north that flow of air coming out of the west is just tapping into these readings in the teens and single dimming its. that's the air mass working on in here. the temperatures don't climb today. they're higher now than they will be this afternoon. we'll slowly step down hovering very close to the freezing mark this afternoon but forget what the they are mom ster says. wind chills at lunchtime. teens to around 20 degrees. they'll be widespread in the teens and lower 20's by later this afternoon. so this is what you want to dress for. let's get you out to those roads right now and see if we have any trouble out there, olessa. good morning. olessa: good morning. the delays route 1 southbound side moving away in saugus. let's see the rest of your trip north of town disabled car 93 south. one lane is closed by 495. and then some more delays from wilmington down to spot pond. eastbound on the pike you're doing okay. 15-20, 495 to 128.

as well in kingston route 3 northbound a tractor trailer that lost its tank there and there is some fuel leaking in the right lane closed by route 3a. your trip to expressway not bad this morning. so far 15-20. from braintree to boston. we're watching minor delays on the red line this morning. they're southbound. everything else running on schedule. emily. emily: thank you. new video just coming in from a deadly fire in gloucester. flames tearing through a home overnight. it is still a very active scene at this hour. randy: the "eyeopener"'s doug meehan is on hammond street with what we know right now. doug? doug: randy, emily. the state fire marshal's office representative just showed up to the scene here, went inside trying to investigate what caused this fire this morning. it broke out on the second floor. they got the call around 3:42 this morning. the firefighters arriving on scene to a home fully involved again mostly on the second floor. firefighters made entry trying

they were quickly beaten back by the heavy flames, smoke, and heat. they exited the building. they were finally able to contain it and then upon further investigation they did find a deceased man on the second floor. the chief telling me it was near a bedroom. again at this point it's too early to determine a cause. it's too early to determine whether or not it was suspicious in nature. but all we do know is that one (no audio). grounds control to major tom randy: breaking overnight. sadness sweeping the music world over the passing of a legend. word coming in early this morning that rock icon david bowie has died. emily: the eye's erika tarantal has the overnight details. erika: david bowie's family taking to facebook and twitter overnight to share the news of his passing. his reps saying bowie died "peacefully" surrounded by family after an 18-month battle with cancer.

bowie's career spanned five decades turning into an icon of the music industry. he just released a new album on friday. that was also his birthday. randy, emily? randy: right now the man accused of shooting this boston police officer is preparing to face a judge. and we are getting new details on that officer's recovery. emily: the eyeopener's todd kazakiewich is live at the courthouse in boston with all of that information. todd. todd: emily and randy, good morning. that boston police officer is now out of the hospital, recovering at home as the man who allegedly shot him prepares for an arraignment later today at dorchester district court. as newscenter 5 was first to report officer kurt stokinger pulled over suspected drug dealer grant headley on friday in dorchester. a warrant was out for his arrest for violating probation. he was serving for gun charges. police say headley, who was driving without a license, got out of the car and started firing at the nine-year veteran officer. headley took off, and responding officers chased him down.

court this morning on several charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. as for officer stokinger, we're told he's at home resting comfortably. live in dorchester, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now the man charged with killing the little girl getting ready to head back to court. michael mccarthy will be arraigned on a murder charge in the death of bella bond. mccarthy is the boyfriend of bella's mother, rachelle; she is charged as an accessory. the body of the toddler was found in a plastic bag on deer island back in june. right now worcester police are investigating another hit-and-run that hurt two it happened last night on southbridge street. it's not clear how badly the victims were injured. webster police were investigating a car found in that town, but it's not clear if that ended up being connected to the crash. randy: six minutes after 6:00.

today donald trump is headed back to new hampshire. donald trump still holds a strong lead here in new hampshire. but a new poll show he's trailing rival ted cruz in iowa by four points. >> i don't intend to send jack boots to knock on your door and every door in america. randy: on sunday cruz knocked trump's signature plan to deport millions of americans. trump, meanwhile, kept up the questioning if his being born in canada endangers his right to be president. the race also tightening in both early voting states on the democratic side. hillary clinton trails bernie sanders in new hampshire and is just ahead of him in iowa. sanders: i think we're gaining steam here in iowa. i think we have an excellent chance to win here. clintion: these polls go up; they go down. i stay pretty focused. randy: both clinton and sanders are campaigning in iowa today with less than a month before caucus voters cast their votes. and today's trump rally in windham starts at 11:00 a.m. chelsea clinton will be campaigning for her mother in boston today. the former first daughter will

"evening with chelsea." she's headed to new hampshire for three events tomorrow to focus on hillary clinton's plans to expand early childhood education and women's rights. women's issues also at the forefront of a big endorsement for the democratic frontrunner. it is the first time planned parenthood has ever picked a candidate in a primary. clinton: planned parenthood should be funded, supported, and appreciated not undermined, misrepresented, and demonized. randy: the group's president says they got into the race early because of what she called "extreme positions" taken by republican candidates. most g.o.p. hopefuls want to cut federal funding for planned parenthood, a measure that has already passed in the u.s. house. emily: right now that interview featuring a drug lord and a hollywood star is at the center of a growing investigation. this morning, the process of extraditing the man known as el chapo is officially underway.

comes in. erika: it was dreams of hollywood that ultimately landed notorious drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman back in custody. some three months ago meeting with academy award winning actor sean penn. penn and mexican actress kate del castillo now both under investigation for the interview detailed in rolling stone magazine. "el chapo," trying to land a movie deal about his life, was shopping the idea to producers and actors. all it got him was a new pair of handcuffs after being rearrested friday following a shootout and attempted escape in a sewer. the mexican attorney general's office confirms the formal start of extradition to the u.s. is underway. as for penn, the department of justice is not commenting, but he may be considered a journalist in this case. >> we'll let somebody else sort out what sean penn did and didn't do. el chapo's where he should be. erika: the extradition process for guzman likely to be lengthy as his lawyers will no doubt put up a big fight to try to keep him in mexico where he's managed to escape from maximum-security

emily: right now, boston police are investigating the city's first homicide of 2016. the shooting happened early sunday morning on falcon street in east boston. the victim's identity has not yet been released. no arrests are reported. randy: today the mbta will be focused on the expensive green line extension project. the fiscal control board will discuss the future of the plan, which was recently put in jeopardy by a new cost estimate. it's now expected to cost $3 billion to expand the trolley line into medford and somerville. an update on the 2016 fiscal budget will also be discussed at the meeting. emily: 6:10 this morning. an american woman murdered in italy. randy: the mystery that some see becoming the next amanda knox case. plus new information on the fire at a popular massachusetts wedding venue. the terrifying moments for a bridal party as they tried to escape the flames. emily: cambridge native matt damon among the big winners at last night's golden globes awards. the other moments that have people talking this morning,

very well done. and good morning to everyone at foxborough regional charter school. emily: thank you for letting us know what you're up to. show off your school accomplishments with an eyeopener wake-up call. just go to the front page of wcvb.com and upload it in the u-local section of our website. olessa: all those kids are waiting for snow days. cindy: yes. n-o in snow at least at this point. rain yesterday. wow, did it pour. look at some of these rain totals across the area. we had over two inches in many spots. nantucket also the cape, brewster, milford, southern inches. north of boston up in haverill over two inches. officially just under an inch-and-a-half in boston. wow, it came in on a gusty wind that really pushed those record warmth. these are all records that were set yesterday. boston up to 58 but we were 61 in hartford, connecticut, yesterday. those winds gusting over 50 miles per hour in spots. yesterday. there's still wind out there this morning.

20 to over 30 miles per hour. that is is knocking back the wind chills. the wind chills expected to get no higher than the 20's today. at times they'll be down in the teens. you want to dress for a blustery feel today even though we'll get back sunshine. enjoy it today. fast-moving system is going to bring in light snow to at least parts of our yeah by tomorrow evening. that storm is right here. it doesn't look like much now. it will race through pretty quickly tomorrow. ahead of it we have high pressure nosing in but our storm is still sit to go the north. in between, it is a wind tunnel that is tapping in to this. temperatures below zero toward minneapolis and zero in chicago right now. teens back into toronto. that is the air mass that is feeding on in. still 48 in halifax, nova scotia, right now. contrast that to 16 down in wild here. this colder air is working in from the west. still move inning this morning so we're hanging on to some low 40's the cape. 35 in boston right now. look at the temperatures over the next several hours. they're going to drop a few degrees hovering right around

that is kind of where we stay through the afternoon. another thing, we're down in the upper 20's right now in worcester county. so do watch out for the fact that there could be an icy spot or two. those winds have been drying out the roads overnight but it could be a little bit slippery. we get back to sunshine. these are the wind chills throughout the day. that's why i say you want to dress for wind chills no higher than the 20's. blustery today but pretty quiet overall with a good amount of sunshine. skies mainly clear into the overnight as well. and with that, the temperature s are going to be dropping down into the teens by tomorrow morning in the sun usuals. should be in the lower 20's in boston. a quiet start to the day. here comes the clipper system racing toward us with a burst of rain and snow. and then the storm really intensifies on wednesday. to our east. that's going to bring perhaps over a half a foot of snow to parts of eastern maine where there are winter storm watches in effect. around here just a coating to maybe an inch of snow in eastern-most massachusetts. you get out beyond 128 and there could be one to locally up to two inches of snow but it doesn't look like it will be a huge deal. it comes in during the second

morning commute is just fine. notice how the clouds are fill inning. by 2:00 or 3:00 we get a burst of rain near the coast with snow over the interior. and then for the evening commute notice how we have snow pushing on in. that would be with us through the evening and overnight hours and then clearing out on wednesday with a gusty wind. it's quiet but chilly here for the end of the week. then next weekend there likely will be a storm around saturday into sunday. a lot of question marks wit at this point but there could be rain and snow around. either way, it doesn't look like it will be great for pate properties game down in gillette weatherwise. olessa: it will only help them. a couple minor things here and there. a live look at the expressway by the gas tank northbound side screen. so far we are start to go see lighting up. north of town, a few problem spots on 93 southbound side there's a disabled car by 495 where one lane is blocked. a crash on the shoulder southbound by route 110. more delays to spot pond and again approaching the leverett connector. also a crash on route 1 southbound where one lane is

eastbound on the pike you're about 15-20, 495 to 128. and still watching this one problem in kingston. northbound side of route 3 a tractor trailer there lost its fuel tank. there is a spill over by route 3a where the right lane is closed. expressway you just saw it live. it's now about half an hour from braintree to boston. we are watching some train delays this morning for the red line. southbound minor delays. everything else on schedule. randy. randy: thank you. right now investigators are trying to figure out what caused this huge fire at a well-known wedding spot. a motel on the property of the historic publick house in sturbridge is rubble this morning. firefighters rushed to the scene early sunday morning. but before they got there, some guests had to rescue other members of a wedding party staying at the motel. >> the bride's twin sister was leaning out on the balcony saying, "help me, help me, help me." so one of the wedding patrons scaled the building and got her out somehow. then another guest at the wedding, how she lived, i don't know.

where the fire was. i guess they had to take her down on a ladder. it was horrible. randy: the nearby historic publick house did not burn, and yesterday's wedding did go on even though it was delayed. the property's general manager says he's looking into reports that smoke alarms in one room didn't go off. right now a murder investigation is underway after an american woman is found dead in florence. 35-year-old ashley olsen's body was discovered in her apartment. no word yet on autopsy results, but authorities say the florida woman did have bruises and scratches on her neck. police have scoured her building for clues and questioned her boyfriend and friends but have no suspect so far. italy's expat community is expressing hope that the case won't turn into another amanda knox-style murder investigation. emily: another plunge for financial markets in china overnight as stocks slipped 5%. that could impact wall street

right now u.s. stock futures are on friday u.s. stock futures ended the worst week in four the stars come out for the golden globes in hollywood. thriller "the revenant" took home a slew of awards. in an upset, "the tale of frontier survival" won best drama as well as best director and best actor for leonardo dicaprio. there's plenty of speculation that could be a sign of things to come at the oscars. emily: cambridge-native matt damon won for best actor for the film "the martian." the science-fiction action movie was actually nominated in the comedy or musical category, and it won for that as well. >> and the winner is "straight outta compton." i'm sorry, folks.

also watching a crash on route 1 south by carter street in chelsea. eastbound side of the pike about 20 minutes 495 to 128. and still watching this problem in kingston early this morning a tractor trailer lost its fuel tank. the right lane still closed northbound by route 3a. as you just saw the expressway live about 30 minutes braintree to boston. minor delays on the red line. everything else is on schedule. emily: thank you. now to the breaking news we're following in gowfter. randy: the eye's doug meehan is on the scene of that deadly fire there. doug? doug: randy, emily, the fire feeters have pretty much wrapped up here what's going on now as the investigation to figure out exactly what caused this fire. it was contained mostly to the second floor. you can see by the charred building here. we're waiting to hear exactly how this fire started. but when firefighters arrived on scene shortly before 4:00 this morning, they encountered heavy smoke, heavy fire on that second floor. they were quickly turned away because of the intense flames.

dorchester. that officer was released from the hospital yesterday. and republican frontrunner donald trump hits the campaign trail in new hampshire today. he'll hold a rally at 11:00 a.m. in windham. emily: right now there are new details in a dangerous plunge into icy water in brockton. a 12-year-old boy remains in serious condition this morning. a 9-year-old boy is recovering after both became trapped in the pond saturday night. a group of friends was playing with the pair just moments before. they ran to get help, knocking on doors and flagging drivers. oswald benoit, who can't swim himself, rushed to help, pulling the 9-year-old out first. trying to make a path to get to the kids. one was bobbing out of the water. i didn't know there was another kid in there. wasn't breathing. emily: the 12-year-old was in before brockton firefighters pulled him out. emily: a suspect will be arraigned today charged in a

it happened on christmas weekend. 71-year-old yaai chen was struck in a crosswalk on pleasant street. it happened near the assisted living facility where she lived. investigators have not released the name of the suspect. randy: 6:35. this morning we are hearing from a women's hockey player who suffered a severe spinal injury during the winter classic. denna laing posted this picture on facebook taken hours before the boston pride took the ice at gillette stadium on new year's eve. laing went head-first into the boards during the first period. laing writes, "for a long time i have been looking for a new challenge. even though i was not expecting it to be this, here we go. i don't want you to feel bad for me. this is a moment to remember for women's hockey. we made history that day, and i would never take those moments back." laing has limited movement in her arms and no feeling in her legs. doctors are not sure about her long-term prognosis. a new test could make it easier than ever to detect and treat cancer.

randy: good morning. it is 6:44. we're following breaking news as we kick off your news to go for this monday morning. doug meehan on the scene of a deadly fire in gloucester. emily: and emily is following breaking news and todd is in boston where the man charged with shooting a police officer is in court. we'll get to all of that. randy: cindy has the forecast. ever changing. cindy: look to the west. olessa: if this is a sign of things to come, i'm moving to florida today. cindy: well, it won't get down to zero or nine below but going to be colder than what we had yesterday which is record warmth across the northeast. boston setting a new record. 58 degrees. those are all new record highs that were established yesterday including that 61 in hartford. so incredibly warm yesterday. we're in the process of dropping those temperatures down this morning. we're still hanging to the lower

and notice out in worcester county and up into the merrimack valley we are hovering at or below freezing so watch out. some of that water still standing out there. it could be freezing a little bit this morning so there could be a few icy patches. boston is 35 degrees right now. look at the temperature trend this morning. we are dropping down below freezing and holding at the freezing mark right around noontime today so you get the idea. the temperatures still dropping this morning at least we'll have sunshine today. the clouds are in the process of breaking up. but those winds are going to be gusty so wind chills by lunchtime, teens and lower 20's and that's where they sit all afternoon. so that's what you need to dress for. it will be a blustery day. you can see the clouds though breaking up. these are lake-effect snow showers coming out of new york state toward northern new england. high pressure is settling in for us. so we're in good shape today with some sunshine. but this right here is a fast-moving clipper system that is going to race toward us tonight. so we stay mainly clear overnight and tomorrow the clouds are going to be filling in. dry through about lunchtime and then it's during the mid to late

couple of rain and snow showers breaking out. i think it's warm enough initially that an eastern most massachusetts tomorrow this starts out as a little bit of rain shower activity and then snow starts to break out during the evening hours. 7:00 p.m. it's breaking out across the worcester area. that whole band is shifting eastward so rain changing to snow in the coastal plain and then the snow showers persist overnight. so it's just a coating to an inch of snow. one to two inches once you get north and west of the city especially out into worcester county. winding down though by wednesday. clearing skies, gusty winds going to make those wind chills in the 20's on wednesday as well. like winter settling in, olessa, how are we doing on the roads. olessa: we're in good shape. here is 93. this is in somerville on the southbound side. you can see that typical rush-hour volume in place. let's go to maps. north of there we are watching one accident on 93 south by 110. there's a disabled car just cleared at 495 but the new accident coming in 93 southbound by route 128. route 1 south at quarter street an accident blocking a lane in chelsea.

almost 25 minutes 495 to 128. and then northbound side of route 3 in kingston one lane still closed by route 3a for a tractor trailer that lost the fuel tank there. there is a fuel leak also in that area. expressway is about 30 braintree to boston. and we're watching some minor delays on the red line. they're southbound but everything else is on schedule. randy. randy: thank you, olessa. now to the breaking news we're following in gloucester this morning. flames tearing through a home with deadly results. emily: the eyeopener's doug meehan is on the scene with what we know right now. doug: emily, randy, this is hammond street just up the hill from main street. a single family home. you can see most of the fire contained to the second floor. a call coming in at about 3:42 this morning. firefighters make entry. they tried to get to the second floor. they were quickly beaten back by the heavy smoke and flames and heat. only one person was home at the time when this fire broke out. the state fire marshal's office on scene right now trying to investigate what caused this fire during their early morning hours.

fighting this blaze. again a cause is still yet to be determined. the person who died in this fire, their name has not been released. they're still waiting to notify family. we're live in gloucester this morning. doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: breaking overnight. erika: breaking news in the music world-- the passing of british rock icon david bowie. bowie's family taking to facebook and twitter overnight to share the sad news. his representatives say bowie died peacefully surrounded by family after an 18-month long battle with cancer. inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1996, his career spanned some five decades and he was still working. he had just released a new album called "blackstar" on friday which also happened to be his birthday. david bowie was 69 years old. the boston police officer who was shot in the line of duty friday is now out of the hospital and home recovering. meantime, the man who allegedly shot the officer is preparing for arraignment later today here at dorchester district court.

report, officer kurt stokinger pulled over suspected drug dealer grant headley on friday in dorchester. a warrant had been out for headley's arrest for violating probation which he was serving for gun charges. police say headley, who was driving without a license, got out of the car and started firing striking the officer in the leg. headley was then captured by other officers. reporting live in dorchester, todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: the man charged with killing the little girl once known as baby doe is getting ready to head back to court. michael mccarthy will be arraigned on a murder charge today in the death of bella bond. mccarthy is the boyfriend of bella's mother, rachelle. the toddler's body was found in a plastic bag on deer island in randy: worcester police are investigating a hit-and-run that it happened last night on southbridge street. it's not clear how badly the victims were injured. webster police were that town, but it's not clear if

the crash. emily: boston police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. the shooting happened early sunday morning on falcon street in east boston. the victim's identity has not been released, and there is no word on any arrests. randy: "the boston globe" is expected to get back on track with deliveries today. the paper issued a statement last week saying deliveries will be improved by today after some subscribers didn't get their papers for weeks. the company had switched to a different distributor, causing the delivery mess. a winchendon elementary school will reopen today after several students became sick with norovirus. memorial elementary was closed last week as workers disinfected the entire building. about a fifth of students and several teachers went home sick last week with flu-like symptoms. sick children are asked to stay at home today. emily: donald trump will be back to new hampshire today as the race tightens in both early

the republican still holds a strong lead in new hampshire, but a new poll shows he's trailing rival ted cruz in iowa by four points. doors open in windham at 9:00 a.m. the rally starts at 11:00. a group of state lawmakers in maine is launching an impeachment investigation into the state's governor. paul lepage has apologized for racially charged comments he made about out-of-state drug dealers. the impeachment request is set to be debated on the house floor on thursday. a group of massachusetts lawmakers will be in colorado today to investigate medical marijuana. it's legal in that state. eight members of the senate's special committee on marijuana will look into the pros and cons of the drug and its effect on public health. members will also discuss implementation into the public and safety steps. emily: president obama is preparing for his final state of the union address. he's expected to discuss economy growth and address terrorism fears in tomorrow's speech. you can watch it right here on wcvb. that starts at 9:00 tomorrow night on channel 5. randy: philadelphia police are looking into a tip that a

officers. that's after this ambush of a police officer last week. the officer is expected to recover after being shot multiple times in his cruiser. the department says they received a tip that the suspect is one of many people affiliated with a radical group. the f.b.i. is investigating. the patriots prepare for a playoff challenge. the kansas city chiefs come to gillette this saturday. and they're on a roll winning their last 11 games. the patriots have lost four of their last six. this is video of the pats versus the chiefs on monday night football in september 2014. the pats lost this game, 41-14. kick off saturday is at 4:35. emily: the celtics let the grizzlies claw their way back from a 21-point deficit in memphis. the c's led by 18 at the end of the first period. but some sloppy play did them in. the grizzlies get it within a point with just 50 seconds to go. and they kept that momentum.

this morning. olessa: good morning, everyone. the zakim bridge to leverett connector typical volume here. let's go to the maps. we are watching a few problem spots this morning. 93 southbound there is a crash clearing over by route 110. also another accident as you travel past 128 where one lane is closed. it stays heavy all the way down to the leverett connector. we're also watching a crash on route 1 south by carter street. those delays in chelsea and stretching all the way north into saugus. if you're traveling eastbound on the pike, 20-25, 495 to 128 and watching that volume on route 3 in kingston because of an early morning incident with a tractor trailer that lost its fuel tank. one lane closed by route 3ament beyond that you're in pretty good shape. expressway typical volume half-hour from braintree to boston. most of the trains are on schedule but the red line we're watching minor southbound delays. cindy once again that wind out there drying up the roads. cindy: you've got it. two hands on the wheel. those winds are very active. they've been clearing out our skies. how nice is that after such a wet day yesterday with a soaking rain, more than two inches in many areas. 35 degrees in boston right now

west. sustained at 17. gusting 20-30 miles per hour or higher across the area. that westerly wind is feeding in even colder temperatures. it's in the teens and single digits above and below zero back toward the great lakes. and that's the air mass that is working on in. although we're starting in the upper 20's to around the freezing mark, worcester county to merrimack valley, and even still 40's down on the cape, the temperatures are going to be dropping as the day wears on. we'll settle back to either side of the freezing mark. with the wind blowing, the wind chill noz higher than the teens and 20's all day long but at least we've got sunshine today. it's clear heading into tonight. and still mainly clear when you temperatures down in the teens and 20's. but i'm tracking a fast-moving clipper system. this is going to come racing tomorrow. it will start as rain but then end as snow tomorrow night. there will be significant accumulation with winter storm watches up out through eastern maine. around here the amounts will be held down. it's likely a coating to about
