it's ahead in eyepoppers. us. good morning. i'm randy price. emily: and i'm emily riemer with snow on the way later, right, cindy? cindy: your morning commute should be just fine. it's the evening commute that i can concerned about. we'll start to see snow break out after 2:00 or 3:00 this afternoon. we could see some snow squalls. when you talk about a snow squall, it is a burst that is brief but it's a burst of heavy snow that can coat the roads quickly, cover them with snow, make it slippery and reduce the visibility. that's what we're watching for right now mainly clear and it is is cold. teens showing up north and west of boston. 19 beverly, 15 worcester. 23 in town but we have teens showing up all the way down to cape this morning. fortunately the winds are light and again the skies are clear. what we're watching here off to the west is racing toward us. it will hold off until i think after 2:00 or 3:00 this afternoon. by that time look at these temperatures. above the freezing mark here. upper 30's boston down to

here, this is going to actually start as a little bit of rain initially. but notice by 5:00 this afternoon, we're seeing some heavier snow along and north of the pike. this is quickly filling in just in time for the evening commute. by 8:00 this evening, notice this band of heavier snow is pushing toward the coastline so initially at the coast we'll see rain. that will change on over to snow tonight. and by tomorrow morning, this is gone. so it's not a lot of snow. a coating to a couple inches along and north of the pike. less than an inch, but it is the timing for the evening commute that i do want you to be aware of. let's get you out to the roads right now. the weather is not causing trouble this morning but we do have issues. olessa: one big problem we're falling breaking news in burlington this morning. northbound side by 128 by route 3 an accident involving a wrong-way driver. this accident had the road completely shut down. at this point one lane is open. if you're heading in that direction plan accordingly. seeing heavy delays building into that accident scene. northbound 128 at route 3 only

there is an accident investigation that's ongoing. west of town you're in pretty good shape right now. all the construction in the final stages. 128 near great plain avenue and also 93 south at the zakim as well as the expressway by the south bay mall. trains and buses starting the morning on schedule. emily. emily: thank you, olessa. breaking news overseas. turkish media reporting that at least ten people are dead and others wounded after an explosion rocked the city of istanbul. this is video just into the news room. it happened in an historic part of the city, popular with tourists. we do not yet know what caused that explosion. we'll bring you more as we get it. right now a high school student is in the hospital after he was hit by a stray bullet just standing in his own kitchen. randy: let's get right to the eyeopener's sera congi. she's in brockton with the new information coming in overnight. sera: randy and emily, that teenager is at boston medical, and he is expected to survive. he was shot in the back while simply getting a drink of water inside his home here on pine

take a look at the video. you can see the bullet piercing the wall of the housing complex hitting the boy in the back and passing right through him. the hail of gunfire outside the complex also hit several cars leaving residents stunned and shaken. richochetted off the hood of this vehicle, came in, hit the visor, went in, straight in and broke right through the window. the bullet was in the back seat of my truck. separate scenes taped off last night. they're still looking for the shooters. neighbors tell us this used to be a quiet area, but drugs and gangs have increased violence here recently. we'll bring you new information as we get it. live in brockton this morning, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now president obama is getting ready to deliver his final state of the union address.

"5 investigates" mike beaudet spoke with the victim's daughter on the eve of gerald craffey's parole hearing. courtney stenstrom was eight years old when her mother corinne flynn was killed in

cane. five years later craffey admitted to the crime and was sentenced to life in prison for second-degree murder with the chance of parole in 15 years. today will be craffey's second appearance before the parole board. >> there is no way that someone like this could be rehabilitated. i would be very worried if he was just out in the general public. randy: even if the parole board approves craffey's release, he won't be getting out of prison right away. he must also serve time for aggravated rape, but the victim's family worries craffey will be that much closer to freedom. emily: new surveillance video shows a father's desperate plea for help as his mattapan home erupts in flames, his son trapped inside. right now that victim is in critical condition. flames tore through the wooden frame breaking through the roof. officials saying it was dental equipment in an office on the first floor that sparked the massive fire. take a look at this surveillance

station. the homeowner running out in a cloud of smoke asking for help to save his son. firefighters were able to pull him out and revive him. >> it was a very difficult situation. >> my heart is crying for the family because now you have folks who are homeless now. emily: a firefighter also injured when he fell through a portion of the compromised floor, but he is expected to be okay. we now know what caused this massive fire on the grounds of sturbridge's historic publick house. the state fire marshal says a lit cigarette left in a planter sparked the flames that consumed a motor lodge. the damage is estimated to be about a million dollars. randy: right now the trial of a teenager charged with causing the crash that left a boston man paralyzed is about to begin. nikolas papadopoulos was 19 when police say his speeding s.u.v. jumped a median on the arborway in jamaica plain in 2013. he collided with a pick-up driven by kevin cellucci who was

papadopoulos had pleaded guilty in exchange for a sentence that wouldn't include jail time. when the judge issued a two-year sentence, he changed is plea and opted to go to trial. hospital is investigating a thousand patients. a hospital spokesman says an unauthorized person gained access to an employee's email account. that account included patient information but did not include financial data. patients are being notified, and the hospital is reviewing security procedures. emily: 5 on the opioid crisis. new numbers this morning on the drug epidemic in new hampshire. the state medical examiner says there were 385 drug-related deaths in the state last year. the majority of those deaths involved opoids, heroin, or fentanyl. even more staggering-- 72-percent of the deaths that did involve opioids or heroin also included fentanyl. three million dollars worth of

it will suddenly get very slippery this evening. a potent disturbance coming at us. not a lot of snow with it but it is the timing that will impact the evening commute. there could be a few snow squalls. where we get that burst of heavier snow that can quickly coat the roads with snow and make them very slippery and reduce visibility as well. that is the concern after about 3:00 this afternoon. here is the system right now. it is racing in our direction. out ahead of it the skies are still mainly clear this morning. it is cold out there. look at all the teens showing up beverly 19. lawrence 19. 13 now in orange. 15 in worcester. teens from plymouth down to the cape as well. 23 out the door right now in boston but here's the difference from yesterday. the wind. it's very light. and notice the direction of the wind today. it's actually turning around to the south. that southerly component of the wind, although it stays on the lighter side, will be just enough to fight increasing clouds. the temperatures may come up to near 40 in boston and the lower

it will be colder off to the north and west but with this temperature profile and this structure, we may start out as a little bit of rain in southeastern massachusetts. notice on the timeline by 3:00 this afternoon a couple of rain showers may start to break out in southeastern massachusetts. not a lot happening just yet. but between 3:00 this afternoon and 5:00 p.m., wow, look at how suddenly that snow starts to fill in areas along and north of the pike. so this is what i mean for the evening commute. and by 8:00 this evening, look at that darker blue showing up out through worcester county. this is when we have the potential for those heavier snow squalls. these are going to be pushing eastward so although we start as rain near the coastline, it will change to snow. by about 11:00 tonight, the bulk of this is winding down and pushing off shore. it's gone. long gone by tomorrow morning's commute. so the amounts here i think ray long and north of the pike a coating to a couple of inches. there could be localized spots if you get in a squall where you see just a little bit more than that. that's the average across most

massachusetts under an inch is likely. now the temperatures tonight drop back into the 20's but as the storm pushes by us, it really begins to intensify here to our east. that's going to keep the snow going into tomorrow across northern maine but it will allow the winds to really houle. wind gusts 30-40 miles per hour all day long tomorrow. when you couple that with the temperatures near 30, wind chills single digits and teens throughout the day tomorrow. the winds die down on thursday but it's very cold here to end the beak. as we get towards friday i want to show you the set-up. there will be another storm approaching from the west. this will spawn a coastal low. this may pull in milder air. there will be limited cold air with this system. that will likely lead to mixed precipitation as well. so we are going to be watching this. it looks like a messy set-up this weekend could have big impacts on the play-off game down at gillette. it does turn colder once again for early next week. let's get you out to the roads, olessa. olessa: we're watching a big problem in burlington.

and build rapidly as the morning commute begins. according to state police, we've got two vehicles involved just before the exit. one involved was a wrong way driver. there is injuries or there are injuries, excuse me. we understand that photo recon is here. we don't know how many people were injured in this accident. and/or what caused that wrong way driver to enter 128 headed southbound on the northbound lane. another car involved. this is a developing story that is breaking. we'll be here all morning long. but i can tell you that as we stand here on the overpass looking down on to 128, things okay. that's after the accident. they'll start to build on the northbound already a dead stop on the other side of this overpass. we're live on the lexington-burlington line. olessa, back to you. that's right. that is going to delays, of

attacked a clerk with a knife. the entire battle captured on surveillance. and that was just the start. the eye's todd kazakiewich is river where that clerk fought back. todd: he certainly did, randy. the man who owns the store tells his life. so he grabbed the weapon that he keeps hidden for just this type of situation. take a look at the surveillance video. you can see the suspect rush in with a large knife sunday morning and jump the counter. but the store owner grabs a large knife of his own. the fight lasts several seconds, each coming dangerously close to cutting the other. at one point, the attacker loses his knife and begins throwing cans. but says he fought back to save himself. >> he said, "give me money, give me money." i was so scared. i thought he wanted to kill me

todd: the owner chased the suspect out, throwing the knife and $300 at him. the bike he arrived on. the store owner, who did not want to be identified, says he's owned this place for three years and has never dealt with such a reporting live in fall river, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. critics include new york's attorney general claiming they're gambling sites, that they're illegal and should be shut down. the company's claim they're actually games of skill. in a highly anticipated memo, gaming chairman stephen crosby says a new state body should be created to regulate the online gaming industry. he also recommended limiting entries from so-called professional players, disclosing the odds players face in each

coating to a couple of inches so the amounts aren't that impressive with this storm coming in but it is the timing that is going to impact the evening commute. there will be the potential for some snow squalls, brief bursts of heavy snow that coat the roads with snow quickly and reduce the visible as well. a heads-up on that later today. you can see that system coming at us right now. ahead of it, the skies clear to partly cloudy out the door this morning. it is cold. we're running in the teens in most of the suburbs from the north shore down to the cape. worcester as well. 23 right now in boston. temperatures come up with a light southerly wind into the mid 30's north and west of town. but look at boston 39 and some lower 40's in southeastern massachusetts. so initially by 3:00 this afternoon, maybe a couple of rain showers breaking out south of boston. but look how quickly the snow fills in. by 5:00 p.m. along and north of the pike, this is snow breaking out. it will get more intense by about 8:00 in the evening. that burst of heavier snow will shift toward the coastline so rain changes over to snow.

around midnight. and tomorrow as the snowstorm pulls away, the winds really ramp up behind this. the winds will be gusting 40-50 miles per hour. wind chills no higher than the teens tomorrow. so if you thought yesterday was cold, tomorrow a little bit colder. less wind but still very cold with sunshine on thursday. all right. back out to the roads we go updating that situation to the north, olessa. olessa: we're talking about burlington live pictures from the scene for you this morning. this is a live look at 128 which is bumper to bumper at this point because of an accident involving a wrong-way driver. this this is the northbound side. you can see the heavy back-up with all lanes being pushed into the right hand side there. the car was traveling south in the northbound lane by route 3 in burlington. let's gelt over to the maps. if you're head inning that direction plan accordingly because northbound we're going to see the delays but the southbound side is going to start to pick up that stop-and-stare volume once again. both directions 128 expect heavy volume there by route 3 because of that early morning accident. if you're traveling the pike this morning, you're okay. and then we're watching another accident on 128 south by route

expressway is about 20, braintree to boston. the trains and the buses are operating on schedule. and going back out to that situation in burlington, doug meehan is live there for us. doug, what is the latest? doug: the investigation is going on as we speak on 128 on the northbound side just before you get to route 3. we still don't know what caused this driver to get on the wrong direction of 128 headed southbound on to the northbound traffic. another car was involved. there are other injuries. the extent of those injuries we don't know. what we do know is that 128 is basically stopped heading northbound trying to get to route 3 from burlington. it's building all the way back into lexington. it will only get worse as the morning commute builds. we'll give you an update as the morning goes along. we'll stay right here at the burlington-lexington line to let you know if any lanes open up. recon is on the scene taking photographs. they're trying to reconstruct what happened at 4:15 this morning.

meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5 randy. randy: breaking news overseas. turkish media reporting at least ten people are dead and others wounded after an explosion it happened in an historic part of the city popular with tourists. we do not yet know what caused that explosion. we'll bring you more as we get it. a teenager hit by a stray bullet is recovering in the hospital emily: the eyeopener's sera police are still looking for the shooters. sera? sera: emily and randy. a teen was shot in the back while inside his home. the bullet hole in the wall of the housing complex. the gun fire also hit several cars. the teen boy was getting a drink of water when he was hit in the back. he is now at boston medical center and is expected to survive. we'll have more details on exactly what happened.

emily: new overnight, a family of four is dead after a house explosion in northeast ohio. the blast shook nearby homes around 8:30 last night. first responders saw flames shooting into the sky when they got to the scene. the bodies of a mother and her two daughters, 8 and 12, were found on the first floor near the front of the home. the father was found near the back of the house. randy: green line service will be disrupted for much of this week between park and haymarket stations. the temporary suspensions will begin at 8:45 on most nights this week. additional work on the government center platform and track will be completed during the closures. the government center station is slated to reopen this spring. republican presidential candidate rand paul says he will boycott the next g.o.p. debate put on by fox business news. he and fellow candidate carly fiorina were pushed from the prime-time stage for thursday's debate in south carolina. paul tells cnn a second-tier

we watch a potent system race toward us from the west it's snow right now but as that comes in, it could be mixed with a little bit of rain initially here in southeastern massachusetts. and notice the timing. 3:00 this afternoon. notice how quickly by 5:00 p.m. things start to fill on in. so the timing with this is tough. it is coinciding with the evening commute. notice along and north of the pike, darker blues showing up. this is indicating the potential for some snow squalls. in heavier bursts of snow. where these develop snow will coat the roads. it will come down hard. visibility will be reduced. notice through 8:00 this evening that is ongoing. notice how this whole line shifting towards the coastline. initially near the coast rain will end as snow. there will be a minor accumulation along with coast and south of boston likely under an inch but from the pike on north ward we could see up to a couple of inches of snow. this all winds down around midnight with skies overnight beginning to clear. temperatures in the 20's. our storm intensifies tomorrow
