6:01 am
he's got something to hide. the smuggling operation that had a pet store owner laughing at him. it's ahead in eyepoppers. good morning. thank you so much for joining us. i'm randy price. emily: and i'm emily riemer with cindy fitgibbon. we're talking about snow, but the timing of this is what is important, right. cindy: a coating to a couple of inches in most spots coming in for the evening commute. it's not a lot of snow but it is the timing. we may see some heavier bursts or snow squalls developing. those could quickly cover the roads with snow, make things very slippery and reduce the visibility so a heads-up. afternoon. that snow is racing toward us from the west. out ahead of i, the skies are clear to partly cloudy. we'll see a little sunshine as it comes up at 7:12 this very cold though. 15 in worcester. 17 beverly. teens all the way down to the cape. boston now 22 degrees. by this afternoon, a light southerly wind will nudge those temperatures up mid 30's north and west of town.
6:02 am
notice lower 40's on the south shore and the cape. so in southeastern massachusetts initially, this could be a little bit of rain. by 3:00 this afternoon a couple of rain and snow showers breaking out. but by 5:00 p.m. notice how everything is filling in rapidly. darker blues starting to show up along and north of the pike by 5:00 p.m. that is indicating that potential for some heavier snow squalls and those will be with us from about 8:00 this evening all the way up until 11:00 p.m. as this moves west to east along the coastline. initially at the coast rain ending as a little bit of snow. that will keep the amounts under an inch in most areas. from the pike on north ward up to a couple of inches of snow are possible. again the timing with this is critical. so that is for your evening commute. the morning commute not so fun either. olessa: good morning. we've been watch inning problem since about 4:30 this morning. 128 northbound in burlington right by route 3 an accident involving a wrong-way driver. once again this happened at about 4:30. at this point only the right lane is squeezing through.

>> good morning, "eyeopener." randy: good morning to you. a very special wake-up call this six years after the devastating earthquake there, proof that the spirit of rutland teenager britney gengel lives on in the orphanage created in her name. emily: the "be like brit"
6:14 am
there, and it's always inspiring to see how far they've come. a great wake-up call. thank you for that. olessa: we have major problems on the roads this morning. emily: for once not the weather. olessa: but later this afternoon cindy: this afternoon and evening. about 3:00 this afternoon, just a heads-up. we're going to see the road conditions quickly deteriorate. this is the potential for snow squalls. that's a brief burst of heavier snow which can quickly coat those roads with snow and reduce the visibility as well. we're watching a fast-moving system that doesn't have a ton of moisture with it. but it does have a lot of energy. that's why we could get into some of these snow squalls moving through the area and they're racing toward us this morning. i think it will be after that 3:00 this afternoon before they start to get going. right now the skies are mainly clear. just a few patchy clouds. wow, it is cold out there. look at the readings. mostly in the teens running in
6:15 am
beverly 17, worcester 15. plymouth down to the cape and the teens. 22 in boss top. notice the winds are light. that's nice after yesterday, right? the winds are going to stay light today but they're going to turn around to the south. that southerly component of the wind is actually going to push those temperatures up into the lower 40's here in southeastern massachusetts. we'll be close to 40 in boston and colder to the north and west. low to mid 30's here. so north of boston, west of boston, this is where we are going to see the most intense snow from the get-go. initially maybe warm enough for rain to be mixed in here in southeastern massachusetts. notice the time stamp here 3:00. not too much happening just yet. but look how quickly things fill in by 5:00 p.m. that's why rapidly deteriorating conditions developing here by about 5:00 this evening so bad timing with the evening commute. notice out through worcester county by 8:00 p.m. this darker blue. this is indicating those heavier snow band potentials. this will be working eastward toward the coastline through 11:00 tonight. so initially at the coast rain
6:16 am
so there will be a brief accumulation of snow, i think, right near the coastline generally under an inch. once you get north and west of boston out along the pike, a coating to a couple of inches of snow. some of the snow squalls could produce locally up to about three inches of snow. we're down in the 20's tonight. our storm system first thing tomorrow pulling away from us, east. that will bring in strong winds, lots of cold. winds gusting 40-50 miles per hour. the wind chills get no high he than the teens. less wind, cold, dry through the end of the week but look at this on friday a system approaching from the west by the evening hours. it's going to develop a new low to the south. and this storm system is going to be working toward us. the exact track of this is uncertain but there's limited cold air with this. so i think it will be a messy mix coming at with us some potential impacts here on that patriots game. the play-off game down at gillette on saturday. that does get colder behind it by martin luther king day on monday. let's get you back out to the roads.
6:17 am
olessa: big problems at the lexington-burlington line. you can see the active investigation at this point. this this is the northbound side of 128 by route 3. what happened was about 4:0 this morning a car was traveling in the northbound lanes but head inning the wrong direction. to cars involved. two people taken to the hospital after this accident. as you can see the reconstruction team on the scene continuing to work on this. let's take live pictures from the scene right now. here's what the back-up looks like getting into that accident. pretty much a parking lot here on the northbound side of 128 getting toward that crash by route 3. all traffic is being pushed into the right lane so three three lanes are shut down. massive delays almost back to route 2 at this point. the southbound side picking up the stop-and-stare volume as well. just a bit. because in addition we have a very busy commute and a couple other problems. there's the accident you just saw. we have a disailed car blocking the lane 93 south at 128. crash on 495 southbound by 93 has a lane out. no problems west of town.

right now. we'll get to that. first though cindy here with your forecast. there's snow on the way. cindy: the evening commute i think will be impacted. we haven't had much practice driving in the snow. not this season anyway. this is one of the latest we've seen our first inch of snowfall on record in boston. we've had officially nine-tenths of an inch not quite to the one-inch mark yet. the latest we've done that in the past years since the 1800's, you can see the top five. right now we're topped for the fourth spot in that place. look like we will get over that inch mark by tonight as we are looking for rain to end the snow in the boston area. as you get along and north of the pike it's a coating to a couple of inches of snow in the forecast this evening into tonight. not a lot of snow but it is the timing that is really going to snarl things up. there could be more intense snow calls. it's a brief burst of heavy snow. that will quickly cover the roads and reduce the visibility. just a heads-up. it makes it dicey here. after 3:00 this afternoon you can see the snow coming at us right now.
