and today is the day the patriots are on the road to the super bowl. our frank holland standing by live at gillette stadium with a preview of today's play-off showdown, but we want to start this morning with the wet weather out there. doug: mike, have they got any of the slickers for tailgating and the game? mike: i would bring all the foul-weather gear you can get. that's a cold rain. the temperatures inland we're seeing 32-33 degrees. really close to the freezing marks. we have freezing rain on some surfaces. be careful. there's a slippery spot here or there. down to the south it's plenty warm. here are the last two bands we'll be talking about. this one from the outer cape. notice how it stretches its way up and wrapping back in at the south shore right now. around the scituate around down through brant rock into plymouth getting a pretty good downpour. a little bit of a gap. right along 495 seeing this area here, this is interesting because we get a real downburst of rain. it can drag the cold air down. you might get more mixing going on. not showing that way on radar right now.

with it as well. to the west there is some snow out through the berkshires. this thing we're going to keep track of it as it goes through the day. the temperatures don't warm up much this afternoon. we'll talk more about the chill and the chance for snow tomorrow night. that in a few minute. antoinette and doug. antoinette: mike, thank you. it's a win-or-go-home playoff showdown for the new england patriots. but exactly who will be available at game time? doug: gronk still a big question mark. frank holland is here with what we know right now. frank? frank: here is what we know for sure. gronk was limited at practice on friday. he is still dealing with knee and back issues. we also know gronk and chandler jones are two of the 12 patriot players listed as questionable for today's game against the chiefs. take a look at this. this is video of gronk from wednesday. we saw then he was also limited by injury, but at that point we only knew he was being bothered by the knee he injured in week 12. on thursday, he missed practice and we learned his back is also

the back problems were a major surprise because gronk was not on any of injury reports in the final three weeks of the season. it's also a major concern because gronk has had two back surgeries since graduating from college. but it's playoff time. all hands on deck and everyone has to step up. brady: it creates this snowball effect. the game is out of hand. you know, this is what happened in houston. before you know it, they got a seven-point lead on the opening kick-off. you already feel like, man, we've got to start getting back into this game. you don't want to be down 14-0 in the middle of the second quarter. frank: big question here. who else is questionable for tomorrow's game? the pats have 12 players listed. gronk and chandler jones as we mentioned. here are the other names that stand out-- julian edelman, rob ninkovich, and sebastian vollmer. all are expected to play, and the patriots need everyone at their best to stop the chiefs' high-scoring offense. the chiefs' best offensive threat-- wide receiver jeremy

missing after two military helicopters collided late thursday night off the coast of hawaii. lt. scott carr: we've seen debris consistent with a military aircraft. it's been in various shapes and sizes. the weather is making it very difficult. mary: the searchers in the air and on the sea are fighting high waves, some 20 feet, looking for survivors in the wreckage. this is the type of chopper that went down-- ch53e super stallions, the biggest the u.s. has, leaving a debris field some 15 miles long, virtually the entire north shore of o'ahu. the super stallions went down in darkness during a routine training mission, the helicopters believed to have collided midair after reports of a fire ball and loud booms. one witness saying it shook her house. col. steve ganyard: at night using night vision goggles there are all sorts of things that adjust your perception of where you are in relation to the aircraft or where the horizon is in relation to the aircraft. mary: friends say if anyone

rentals. h.y.m., the lead developer, the most striking building and office tower. o'brien: it will curve and-- it's almost as if it's a sort of a jacket opening up a little bit to reveal the inner windows in there so it's really quite beautiful. very different on the boston skyline. pam: as the buildings go up, half the old garage demolished cutting 2,300 parking spaces in half-- a problem but the mayor says worth it. going to enhance the neighborhood. lose space all over the place. it's going to become a bigger problem. we're going to have to figure out at some point how do we create the most parking in the city. pam: finished product-- high end and polished, out of the reach of many residents but tom o'brien says all can benefit. o'brien: for ordinary bostonians really what the problem with this garage has been, it's been a dividing point for these neighborhoods forever. it will be a very different place. this garage has been a barrier for too long. when it comes out, it will be something totally different for these neighborhoods and for bostonians in general.

morning for the "eyeopener--" and you should be starting at 5:00 p.m.-- we had really reduced visibility because of the fog. you can see ohio the fog is is breaking up. we have two-mile visibility in boston. here's the view from the camera. a lot of rain on the lens at this point but the visibility has come up dramatically. it's 37 degrees right now. there is that northerly wind starting to pick up now at 20 miles per hour. it will be very gusty as we head through the early afternoon hours. the temperatures, you can see warm enough to support rain at the coast. inland it gets more iffy. worcester at 32 degrees. orange at 33. jaffrey at 31. any time you get to 32 or below, we start to worry about a little bit of ice out there. that's what we're getting reports of. just a little bit here and there. not a widespread event. as you head towards the cape you're seeing reading into the mid 40's. that's all rain. boy, the rain has been coming down hard. here's the storm. this is a nor'easter by the way. you see what's happened. hasn't had any cold air to work with. you have to go way to the north to find snow.

good news for the ski places. with the cold temperatures coming this week all the local ones will be able to make more snow this week. there are two big bands of rain. this one here is pivoting its way back in just a little bit. it's in the outer cape right now and then down through the south shore. the heaviest is right off shore but this is going to pivot its way back. in boss to boston we have a steady rain going on. we'll have downpours within the next half-hour or so. we have cold air in place. this is the reason we would have icy conditions or perhaps a little bit of snow. once the rain starts coming down, it drags the cold air down. you get more snow possibilities. we're not looking for much accumulation but that threat is out there. there is snowfalling through the berkshires at this point. here's what i mean. on our live radar you can see it fitchburg where it's 34 degrees we're seeing this little pocket right through here. this is the region i'm concerned about icing conditions and freezing rainfall. of course freezing rain is the worst. it doesn't take much. falls on a cold surface. it freezes like a big ice

the freezing areas we're talking about outside of 495 as we head through the morning, snowfalls totals won't amount to too much. with the rainfalling in there, it will soak it all up. it is a cold rain. temperatures in the 30's and cold rain. at 9:00 still have the downpours across the area. the temperatures are very warm and very cold. as we head through the afternoon, the temperatures tulty kind of hold or drop off a little bit. by 11:00 a.m. we're pushing the rain off shore. by the time we get to 1:00 there's a few scattered showers left over. by the time we get to 3:00 it's pretty much winding down. a lot of gray skies sitting out there. the seven-day forecast break it down for you. show you what's going to happen today. chalk it up to rain this morning. a little bit of cloud cover this afternoon and temperatures going the wrong direction. they're going to fall as we head through the day today. tomorrow is not a bad day. 36 degrees with sunshine. once we get to tomorrow night into monday, we've got a cold front coming through. fast-moving, arctic blast. it will squeeze moisture out of the atmosphere. we could get a coat to go as high as two inches in very isolated areas. more importantly is what it

good morning, everybody. i'm doug meehan. antoinette: and i'm antoinette antonio along with mike wankum this morning. oh, we saw frank out at gillette there. that rain has been coming down all morning. mike: he's under an umbrella. imagine if he weren't. you know, if you're sit inning the stands or something like that. fortunately it looks like we'll get rid of the rain before the game starts but the tailgaters, you're a hart bunch anyway. check out the temperatures. you head down towards gillette, upper 30's but you head towards worcester and points north right at that freezing mark getting some reports of that rain changing over to some snow in a few locations. that will be kind of going on all the way through this morning. not looking for any big accumulations but i would worry about a few icy spots that could develop. here you see the bands of moisture. this one is pivoting up and this one is pivoting around. this is a nor'easter but it's lacking cold air. we're talking about rain out of this whole thing. on the outer cape just nicking along the south shore before you move into 3a you probably have the steadier rains. if you're right at the shoreline at this point, pretty good

53-year-old william drummy of quincy was the taxi driver responsible for bringing the students to brockton high and the goddard school. the young passengers told police they repeatedly asked him to pull over as he swerved and sped before crashing. drummy told police he slipped on ice; but when they asked him if he had taken anything, he admitted he took several diazepam pills less than an hour before. according to the weymouth police report, when officers questioned drummy about the crash, he appeared disoriented and bewildered and was closing his eyes and almost falling asleep standing up. they also observed he was increasingly unsteady on his feet. they say he answered their questions nonsensically and vaguely. one of the students told police that drummy had been drinking fire ball cinnamon whiskey as he drove, and in a search of his car police did find a half empty bottle. we called shore taxi to get some information about the driver's

who answered said "no comments" and hung up. drummy pleaded not guilty to eight charges at his arraignment. he must remain drug and alcohol free and also submit to random drug testing until his next court date of february 12. he also nnot drive any taxi vehicles. in weymouth, juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: also in brockton a highly toxic batch of heroin hitting the city hard with 40 overdoses in just 48 hours. the police chief says the overdoses are having an impact across the entire community. there were two overdoses on an mbta train as it was pulling into the station this week. firefighters say the results would be more tragic if they weren't carrying narcan. >> i think now they don't have a fear because the narcan is so readily available. they know we carry it. doug: brockton is close to launching program similar to the one in gloucester offering treatment to any addict who asks for help using police and fire houses as safe havens. the white house is also taking on the nation's heroin and opioid abuse problem.

so we've got heavy showers right along the coastline here along the south shore especially from plymouth up through duxbury up through scituate. eventually towards cohasset. then as you head inland we have this area right along the mass pike. you're traveling from framingham out to the west. you're going to be running into really heavy downpours and likely because this is such a downburst going on, it's dragging cold air down so we'll probably be getting more mix going on as well. sometimes radar can't detect all those things. you get up north of route 2 and you start in the winch done area or up even into peterborough, you're starting to see snow going down. we're going to get a little accumulation, that is. a couple inches not out of the question. but the other thing to watch is that's the back edge of it right there. this thing is racing quickly. that's why i say it's this morning, this afternoon, we're going to be done with this whole thing. let me show you the temperatures and the rain and snow line as we go through the morning. 9:30 this morning. still looking at the downpours along the coast. mid 40's. upper 30's. oh, that's where it gets close around the orange area. 34 degrees. could be snow going on there.
