doug: and i'm doug meehan. morning. we turned the corner and there's nothing but white. mike: i have snow to talk about. this morning as you get out stars out there. we have the clear skies. freezing. maybe a little patchy black ice is a possibility this morning because of all that rain we got yesterday. nothing going on around here. i'm going to widen out the view to show you where the snow is coming from. it's got a long way to go. there's an area down here and an area to the west. these are both coming up in our direction. they're going to impact us with a bit of snow. what is the timeline on this? as we head towards 9:00 tonight, this storm system is way off shore but it's just close enough to us that it may start to get a little bit of snow going on. then we turn our attention to this system. this will come through during the morning. it's also going to give us a chance of snow. you put both of those together. not that impressive but it is going to be a little bit of snow. of course it will happen during the morning commute tomorrow. i'm thinking about 1-3 inches of snow right near the shoreline. inland a dusting to an inch. as you get out to the elevation toward the berkshires again another 1-3 inches to talk

not a big event. then we haven't had much snow so far this year. we may double our snowfall totals overnight. we'll talk more about the timeline and the cold that follows. all that coming up in just a few moments. brady: it was a great win. took everything we got. doug: tom brady and the patriots powering ahead on the road to the super bowl. pats to a 27-20 win over the chiefs. back in the afc championship game next week. antoinette: brady threw for two touchdowns to rob gronkowski and this in the second. brady goes in for the sneak, and he's in for the touchdown. plenty of key plays for the patriots, and a welcome sight for fans with julian edelman back on the field. now it's on to the afc championship game. the patriots will either face the broncos in denver or the steelers here at home for a spot in super bowl 50.

a marine from hingham among 12 missing after two military helicopters crashed. the search now entering a third day. christopher orlando's friend and hope. the "eyeopener"'s frank holland is here with the latest on that southeastern. frank? frank: antoinette, right now dozens of rescuers are scouring the debris off the coast of oahu looking for survivors. and there is still a strong sense of hope in hingham where friends and strangers are praying for chris to come home. the 23-year-old corporal is a flight crew chief. his family releasing a statement yesterday, thanking everyone who continues to pray for their son and the other missing marines. so far search efforts have been hampered by choppy waves and low visibility. thursday night's incident is just the latest in a series of marine corps helicopter crashes in the past year. >> any time you get these number of mishaps in a row it's time to stop, look back and take a look at what you're doing wrong. is it the training?

is it way they're being operated? frank: the area where the search is focused is known to surfers as the seven-mile miracle. in hingham, the south shore surfing community hoping it lives up to that name. when their friend chris, who is an avid surfer, comes home. officials say rescue crews will continue to search for several more days. no word yet on what actually caused this crash. doug? doug: a remarkable turn of events in the mideast a hingham man one of several americans just released from prison in iran. matt trevithick, who went to iran for a language program at tehran university, was in prison for 40 days. four other americans were also released under a negotiated prisoner exchange. the release of the american prisoners comes just as the nuclear deal with iran goes into effect lifting sanctions and making tens of billions of dollars available to the iranian government. secretary of state kerry hailing the release as a victory for u.s. diplomacy. three of the americans released had been held prisoner for

hostage in iran back in 1979. former u.s. marine amere heck made held for more than four years after an arrest on spying charges while visiting his grandmother in tehran. hoping to get more addicts the treatment they desperately need. he's announced the "champion plan" with a goal of expanding resources for addicts rather than putting them behind bars. similar to the program in gloucester, brockton is partnering with local hospitals and treatment centers. the plan will be in place sometime next month. more support for new guidelines for prescribing opioids for chronic pain. 36 attorneys general from across the country, including massachusetts a.g. maura healey, have signed a letter urging the c.d.c. to adopt the guidelines. the national association of attorneys general says the guidance will help doctors and other health care workers balance the potential harms and benefits of opioid use. antoinette: president obama is proposing a set of changes to unemployment insurance that he says would offer more security to unemployed americans and encourage more people to rejoin the workforce. president: if a hard-working american loses her job regardless of what state she lives in, we should make sure she can get unemployment

nantucket had 50-mile-an-hour wind gusts, rockport 48-mile-an-hour wind gusts. these were strong winds. the other thing is we were looking for snow. it's january. we're trying to find some. the snowfall totals as you realize were not that heavy out there. generally about an inch to an inch-and-a-half. you can see fitchburg picking up about an inch of snow. where was it? you had to go to the north. now this is a good thing to point out because it told us yesterday we had just enough cold air that we supported snowfall totals like four inches in portland or even up to a half maine. all we need is the cold air. now we have cold air that we get to talk about. also by the way yesterday rainfall totals anywhere between an inch to two inches of rain across the area. well today we don't have that much moisture but we do have the colder air to talk about. right now in boston it's 34 degrees. westerly wind at 14 giving us a wind chill index or how it feels out there of 25 degrees. check out these temperatures. a lot of places are below the freezing mark. a little bit of patchy black ice out there. not a big issue. we had all that water from yesterday.

the drain to we have a couple of spots that are slippery out there. temperatures to the south are still above the freezing mark. so we have morning sunshine this morning and afternoon clouds. high temperature today about 32-38. that's cooler than yesterday. and then tonight cloudy skies. some snow showers. 20-26 with a northerly breeze. so what's going to happen? let me give you an hour-by-hour breakdown. you'll notice as we go through the day today by this afternoon we have a lot of clouds and temperatures just barely above the freezing mark. watch this area down here to the south. starts to lift its way north ward. that is storm system which is way off shore, but it's got enough energy that it's throwing just a little wave of snow at us. this is 8:00 tonight. and then it kind of tries to fold its way back in overnight. this is the way the map looks at midnight. we have this area to talk about and another area out here to the west that wants to come sweeping through. two areas that are going to impact us over about the next 18 hours. by tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m., we have some snow showers. look at that line forming right through there. that's a snow shower. snow shower is when you get a burst of snow and then it moves

that process you can pick up a quick inch of snow. eventually we do clear things out later on tomorrow night. how much snow? i think because you have really two events that will be affecting the coast i'm going a 1-3 category. inland probably a dusting to an inch. through the berkshires scraping off a little more moisture will put it back up to 1-3. these are not impressive snowfall totals but we haven't seen much snow this year. we've only had 1.2 inches of snow so far this season. today is 36 degrees with fading sunshine. that snow coming in here tonight. snow showers tomorrow especially during the morning commute. high temperature only about 28 degrees. you know, on tuesday, it's cold but it's the wind that will be the issue. the wind is 15-30 miles per hour. wind chill indices in the morning on tuesday will be about five degrees below zero. temperatures will modify a little bit and then we look for our next chance for some snow. this will be on saturday of next week. the interesting thing about this one was yesterday it was looking like it was staying to the south of us.

mike: it was a good game. a lot are yawners but this one was good. i've got a couple things to talk about today mostly snow. it's not a lot. but it's going to be out there. let me show you what the temperatures are this morning. you're starting your morning off with temperatures in the 30's and a few 20's out there. overall, it's not a bad start to day. in fact, we have sunshine this morning but then we have to watch way down the coast and out to our west. there are two things that are going to affect us. this one and this one. they're going to come in at us with really some light snow but you see what happens. this first one is way off shore extension. you get idea. tonight we could see light snow primarily the cape, cape ann, cape cod and also the eastern part of the state. then this area is going to come morning. when it comes through, it creates these snow showers or snow squalls. what happens is that burst of snow that can happen as they move through. you drive through one and then all of a sudden just a couple miles down the road you're back into sunshine. it means slipper erodes out there. behind this thing is cold air. how much snow are we talking about? not a lot.

our sera congi was there. scott brown: somebody whom i've known for some time. sera: a familiar face to new england politics, former u.s. senator of massachusetts scott brown welcoming the g.o.p. frontrunner for president. scott brown: the next president of the united states, donald trump. sera: donald trump rallied the crowd of 1,000 at a portsmouth, new hampshire, car dealership appearing with brown who has organized a series of political events. trump: whether it's new hampshire, iowa, south carolina, we're doing so well. >> he's a strong candidate, and i think he is gointo do what he says he's going to do. whenever he sets goals, he accomplishes what he sets out to do. sera: trump sounded themes that have helped propel him in the polls. trump: illegal immigrants are treated better than our vets. sera: and trump also encouraged brown to return to politics with some in the crowd chanting, "v.p." trump: it looks like-- hey, vice president? hey! sera: he's encouraging you to get back into politics. brown: i'm helping others get involved. i'm helping not only here in new hampshire but still in massachusetts where i have some dear friends.

antoinette: good morning. 5:42. welcome back. new hampshire state troopers say they found a man unconscious in the woods in enfield ten hours after he crashed his car. police say the man veered off the highway, struck a guard rail, and rolled his car. doug: our frank holland is here with how police found him and the charges he could be facing. frank: doug and antoinette, police say this man is lucky to be alive. after he crashed he left his car and then wandered into the woods at night. he was all alone and without a cell phone. police are crediting the rescue

a k9 officer named briggs. state police responded to a rollover crash friday night on interstate 89 in enfield; but when they arrived, all they found was a 2003 buick. trooper janell smith: we checked for the driver. there was some blood in the vehicle, but no driver was located in the area. frank: trooper janell smith says the driver, 49-year-old james borneman of springfield, was driving southbound when he veered off the road striking a guard rail. at the time, officers didn't know if he left the scene or if he was ejected from the car. officers checked with hospitals and family, but borneman could not be found. they returned to the scene hours later. trooper: that is when we pushed further northbound on the same side, and that is when we saw what appeared to be signs that someone had slid down the embankment, and we saw footprints along the river bank headed northbound. frank: state police asked for assistance from the lebanon police department's k-9 unit to track the missing person. officer jonathan tracey and his dog briggs were called in to help. officer: we tracked up a ridge.

it was tough terrain. frank: police say borneman walked through ice and snow and across a fast moving brook. crews worked their way around, walked up a ridge and that's when k-9 briggs spotted him under a tree. borneman was found unconscious around 4:30 a.m. in lebanon, ten hours after the crash. jonathan tracey: briggs actually found him before we did. he came right up on him and pretty much put his nose to his face, and it startled the guy and he sat up a little bit. frank: the hanover fire department provided immediate assistance by extending a ladder over the brook to pull borneman to safety. >> the fire department coming out and assisting us getting this guy back across that brook without having to go back in the water. they did a great job too. frank: borneman could also face charges for drug possession. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. troopers say speed appears to be a factor. frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meterologist mike wankum.

december was above average and so far the month of january is running above average. we had a high temperature yesterday of 40 degrees, but i think the week ahead is going to show up with more blue days as we start to talk about chilly temperatures moving back into the forecast. 34 degrees right now. westerly wind at 14. wind chill out there right now is 25 degrees. a little cool because of that wind. but otherwise it's really a pretty nice morning out there. we have a few temperatures outside the city which are below the freezing mark. watch out. there might be a little patchy black ice. all that moisture left over from yesterday. if you're traveling south of the city, i think most of the temperatures are above the freezing mark so not a big issue but not nearly as warm as what it was yesterday morning. yesterday morning we had temperatures in the 40's. so what do the high temperatures look like today? generally into the mid 30's for highs. look what will happen. in bedford tomorrow only 26. tuesday only 26 degrees. and, yes, there is a little snow in the forecast as we talk about tomorrow's forecast as well. over towards worcester, 31 degrees today. but you know it's going to get cold. tuesday morning down to the single digits, and the wind chills will be below zero on tuesday.

talking about. south shore, temperatures generally in the mid 30's today. bridgewater a high temperature on monday 28. only 26 degrees as we look at tuesday's forecast. and the cape, this is the best opportunity for seeing some snow. it's not only tonight but also tomorrow as well. you'll see the temperature dropping off but not quite as dramatically as what we've been seeing inland. overtonight tonight, we will be seeing the lows dropping off in most locations into the 20's. that's just the beginning of the cool air coming in. we've also going to talk about snow. this system here and this system here. both of them are pretty weak. but as they move through or at least this one is going to be well off shore. so it's going to give us a little bit of snow. here is the timeline. a lot of clouds this afternoon. by about 8:00 we start to see moisture working its way in off the shoreline. you see what happens. it pushes its way inland. it may be mixed with a few sprinkles. it means we get this band setting up along the coast around midnight which would mean snow from cape ann to cape cod and include the city of boston. we wait for part 2 of the storm and that comes through tomorrow

we have two events that will be happening. but when you add them all up together they don't amount to a whole lot. about 1-3 inches of snow along the coast. you have to watch this. this type of situation sometimes you get these little bands that can set up. you can actually get a little bit more than that. also because they're very difficult to forecast, you might not get anything out of the whole deal. then inland a dusting to an inch. 1-3 mainly because of those snow showers moving through. here's your seven-day forecast. we'll show you what will be happening. today 36. tomorrow 26 degrees. watch out for snow showers especially during the morning commute. it's cold on tuesday, and it's windy which will make it feel even colder out there. we get plenty of sunshine back for wednesday, thursday and friday. but another system may impact us a little bit on saturday. that could give us some rain or some snow. yesterday-- now it's starting to look more like it will get us. we'll keep a close eye on that one. that's not until next weekend. antoinette: thank you, mike.

now on the eyeopener. doug: new hampshire's attorney general wants to weigh in as a federal agency considers a natural gas pipeline that would pass through state parks and forests. attorney general joseph foster says he's filed documents to intervene on kinder morgan's application. the northeast energy direct project would cross 70 miles of southern new hampshire to pipe natural gas from pennsylvania to the northeast. antoinette: a baby born in an oahu hospital has tested positive for the mosquito-borne zika virus. the c.d.c. said the mother was likely infected while in brazil last year. the virus has been linked to a recent surge in birth defects. there is currently no vaccine to block the virus and no medicine to treat it. the c.d.c. is considering imposing new travel guidelines

very benign. can't notice it. in fact, when we walked in, i don't think anyone even saw it. mike: we had to ask where it connors: that's the intent of the design. mike: it uses both infrared and audio sensors. the company says it's 100% reliable with no false alarms. here's how it works. this is only a drill. a gun is fired. instantly the sensor identifies the location. that information is quickly sent displaying on a map of the building. it shows the exact location of the gun fire. dispatcher: second floor room 226. mike: simultaneously a warning is sent to all responding officers on their cell phones. police know what's going on inside cutting down on the confusion. they don't have to wait to enter a building. precious seconds that can save lives. chief joseph solomon: how long does it take you to hide and get on your phone and call 911. you're emotional. the dispatcher calms you down. you're three, four, five minutes into the call where instantaneously, like that, when the alert goes off, we know where it came from. mike: average cost to retrofit a school is about $25,000-30,000.
