good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." antoinette: it's a great feeling waking up this morning. good morning to you. 6:00 on this sunday, january 17. i'm antoinette antonio. doug: and i'm doug meehan. we're getting ready for what happens what could be a white sunday as well. mike wankum? mike: it will be a slow process though. not going to get going until later on this evening. it does look like we have a little more snow in the forecast. temperatures are cold enough to support snow in most locations. it won't warm up a whole lot today. it will stay rather on the cool side. you're starting the day off though with clear skies. beautiful sunrise setting up for us. then as we look off to our west, we've got a system developing out here. we've also got a system right here. these two are both coming up, not together but come inning separately. that's key. if they got together, we'd have another story to talk about. this one is really moving way off shore. you can see what happens. just enough moisture working its way north ward. tonight we could see light snow especially at the coast. then you watch this system out here to the west. this is the one coming in tomorrow morning for the

so one comes in. the other one comes right in behind it. that's why we've got that chance for some snow not only tonight but tomorrow morning especially watch out for snow showers. it's not a lot of snow but it does look like along the coast we could see as much as 1-3 inches of snow. we'll talk more about that and the timeline and the cold behind it. all that coming up in just a few minutes. brady: it was a great win. took everything we got. doug: tom brady and the patriots powering ahead on the road to the super bowl. a pumped-up tb-12 leading the pats to a 27-20 win over the chiefs. the victory putting the patriots back in the afc championship game next week. antoinette: brady threw for two touchdowns to rob gronkowski and this in the second. brady goes in for the sneak, and he's in for the touchdown. plenty of key plays for the patriots, and a welcome sight for fans with julian edelman back on the field. now it's on to the afc championship game.

the broncos in denver or the steelers here at home for a spot in super bowl 50. brady: they're two great football teams. we played them both this year already. you know, it will take our best effort to beat them, whoever it is. antoinette: the patriots now trying to become the first team to win back-to-back nfl titles since they did it in '03-'04. doug: after a week of turmoil, last night's victory was sweet relief and reason to celebrate for patriots fans. our todd kazakiewich spent the day in the thick of it with patriots nation. matter who they'll face next week, fans are hoping they'll be back at gillette. todd: the celebration began at gillette right after the patriots' victory over the chiefs. fans honoring a team that marches to the beat of its own drum.

todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. desperate search continues off the coast of hawaii. missing after two military helicopters crashed. the search now entering a third day. family are still holding out hope. the "eyeopener"'s frank holland is here with the latest on that search. frank? frank: antoinette, right now dozens of rescuers are scouring the debris off the coast of oahu looking for survivors. and there is still a strong sense of hope in hingham where friends and strangers are praying for chris to come home. the 23-year-old corporal is a flight crew chief. his family releasing a statement yesterday, thanking everyone who continues to pray for their son and the other missing marines. so far search efforts have been hampered by choppy waves and low visibility. thursday night's incident is just the latest in a series of marine corps helicopter crashes in the past year. >> any time you get these number of mishaps in a row it's time to stop, look back and take a look at what you're doing wrong. is it the training? is it the airplanes?

operated? frank: the area where the search is focused is known to surfers as the seven mile miracle. the south shore surfing community is just hoping it lives up to that name. corporal orlando is an avid surfer. they are praying he will come home to ride the waves in hingham again. officials say rescue crews will continue to search for several more days. no word yet on the cause of the crash. doug: a remarkable turn of events in the mideast a hingham man one of several americans just released from prison in iran. matt trevithick, who went to iran for a language program at tehran university, was in prison for 40 days. four other americans were also released under a negotiated prisoner exchange. the release of the american prisoners comes just as the nuclear deal with iran goes into effect lifting sanctions and making tens of billions of dollars available to the iranian government. secretary of state kerry hailing the release as a victory for u.s. diplomacy. three of the americans released

longer than the americans taken hostage in iran back in 1979. former u.s. marine amir hekman held for more than four years after an arrest on spying charges while visiting his grandmother in tehran. "washington post" bureau chief jason rezaian held for a year-and-a-half after a closed trial and conviction on espionage charges. pastor saeed abedin imprisoned since july for organizing home churches in iran. all spent time at iran's notorious evin prison where they were allegedly subjected to beatings, solitary confinement, and psychological abuse. two other americans were also released including a student named matthew trevithick who was arrested a few months ago. last summer president obama angrily dismissed suggestions that he was not working hard enough to get the prisoners released. president: the notion that i'm content as i celebrate with

iranian jails, that's nonsense. doug: not included in the prisoner swap-- f.b.i. agent robert levinson who disappeared during a 2007 visit to iran. his whereabouts are still unknown. in exchange for the release of the americans, the u.s. dropped charges against seven iranians along with international arrest warrants issued by the u.s. against 14 other iranians. it's the third time the obama administration has made exchanges to free americans held abroad including sergeant bowe bergdahl, freed in exchange for five taliban prisoners, and alan gross, freed from a cuban prison in exchange for three cubans held in the u.s. trevithnick is already on his way home. officials say they are working on logistics right now to get the four other americans out of tehran. antoinette: the district attorney and waltham police are investigating a murder-suicide right now. police responded to a request for a well-being check on forest street around 5:00 last night. when they arrived, they found

the d.a.'s office says this is an isolated incident, and there is no threat to public safety. an update now to an early morning fire in roslindale leaving several people without a home. we brought it to you as breaking news yesterday when flames broke out at a condo in dale village. boston fire officials say smoking material caused the fire. the red cross is now helping out 14 people who were displaced. doug: arlington police subdue a woman wielding this knife, preventing a potential "suicide by cop" situation. the 32-year-old had barricaded grove street, threatening to kill herself. when police forced their way inside, the woman charged at officers with the knife. an officer deployed a beanbag round which struck the woman and disarmed her. 5 on the opioid crisis in the mayor calling the current situation a public health with the recent spike in overdoses over the last couple of days, mayor bill carpenter is hoping to get more addicts the

he's announced the "champion plan" with a goal of expanding resources for addicts rather than putting them behind bars. similar to the program in gloucester, brockton is partnering with local hospitals and treatment centers. the plan will be in place sometime next month. antoinette: president obama is proposing a set of changes to unemployment insurance that he says would offer more security to unemployed americans and encourage more people to rejoin the workforce. president: if a hard-working american loses her job regardless of what state she lives in, we should make sure she can get unemployment insurance and get help to retrain for her next job. antoinette: the president's proposal would require states to provide wage insurance to workers who lose their jobs and find new employment at lower pay. it would be available to workers who were with their prior employer for three years and make less than $50,000 in their new job. he also wants to require all

golden now says he is a victim too. the former taco bell executive now filing a $5 million lawsuit against the uber driver he apparently attacked in southern california last fall. golden admitted he was drunk at the time. now he's claiming the driver illegally videotaped the altercation, and he's seeking damages for "severe emotional distress, humiliation, and anxiety. >> i've been trying not to read what's being said, but, you know, i'm not that person (crying) frank: golden was charged with assault and battery. he's pleading not guilty. those charges are still pending. golden was also sued by the uber driver, edward caban, for unspecified damages. the lawyer for the driver is calling the counter-lawsuit by golden, "bogus." doug? doug: thank you, frank. the bruins family teaming up to help a hockey player severely injured on new year's eve. word now that the team, the jacobs family, the bruins foundation, and t.d. garden

help denna laing. she suffered a significant spinal injury during the outdoor women's winter classic at gillette stadium. laing's parents say she has limited movement in her arms and no feeling in her legs. bruins c.e.o. charlie jacobs said the donation is the first step in continuing support for laing's recovery. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meterologist mike wankum. antoinette: tweeted earlier about us possibly expecting some snow. and the response was, all caps, snow? mike: it's been such a boring time for the weatherman. i really want to remind you about last year as well. antoinette: please don't. doug: in row minder needed. mike: they were having the same conversation last year. so far this year we've only had 1.2 inches of snow. last year we had 5.5 inches snow. normally we get 16.7. you all know what happened. four big storms.

110.6 inches of snow so it is early in the season yet. i may have some snow coming in next weekend. first i've got a little snow coming in tonight. you see, i have one system down to the south that wants to go this way. i have one up to the north that wants to go this way. they're not getting together. but they'll be giving us a little snow by 8:00 tonight. it will be with us through much of tomorrow. right now no snow out there. it's 34 degrees. westerly wind at 10. it seem like it's settling down just a little bit giving us a wind chill index of 26 degrees. so temperatures out there pretty much if you're stepping out this morning, you're walking into readings which are just at the freezing mark or slightly below. be careful. there might be a slippery spot or two left over from all that rain from yesterday. down to the south temperatures are close to the freezing mark but seem to be above that. i don't think it will be necessarily as big as an issue. today morning sunshine. afternoon clouds in here. 32-38 degrees with a per hour. then for tonight cloudy skies. some snow showers developing. 20-26 degrees. we're talking about the cool temperatures moving back in.

let me show you. timeline on this we'll head towards 8:00 tonight. first off 3:00 this afternoon. you notice the clouds coming in. what happens. there's a big storm system way off shore. but it's close enough that it throws this moisture back at us. so what you'll see is it kind of pin wheels at us. right along from cape ann to cape cod we're seeing our steadiest snow at midnight tonight. this system kicks its way out of here. a new system comes in tomorrow morning. that's the second one i'm showing over the great lakes. it comes in with snow squalls. what that means is you'll be going along perfectly fine. all of a sudden you get this burst of snow. it lasts about 10-15 minutes. then it moves on through. that. we've got these two events. they are not getting together other problems. for right now let's call it light snow. biggest area will be right along persistence. 1-3 inches of snow seems likely. i think with those snow squalls coming in a dust to go an inch can't ruling out a place that

generally it's a quick coating that comes through. through the berkshires we may have a little more enhancement. i point out this 1-3. as these bands set up just right, it can be a little bit more than that. we'll keep a close eye on that as we head through the evening hours. this is the way one of our computer models are projecting it. there's the first band. then the second band coming through. weaver all in the same ballpark on this one as to what's going to be happening. here's the way it breaks down over the next several days. i want you to focus here. today snow. 36. high. tuesday morning, the wind is going to be out there with those temperatures and that's going to zero. we're talking about some cold stuff on tuesday. the wind abates a bit on wednesday and thursday as the temperature climbs just a little bit. then another chance of some snow next saturday. yesterday it looked like the storm would miss us and stay to the south. now the computer models are hinting it may try to inch its way north ward. again that's a week away so we have a lot of time. we're going to work on the details of that one.

clinton. he and other volunteers pounded the pavement and knocked on doors, kicking off a grassroots canvassing campaign. right now, clinton is fighting to regain her lead in the race with polls showing sanders gaining traction in iowa and new hampshire. doug: donald trump was also back in new hampshire where he continues to lead in the polls. he teamed up with a familiar face in massachusetts politics-- former u.s. senator scott brown. our sera congi was there. scott brown: somebody whom i've known for some time. sera: a familiar face to new england politics, former u.s. senator of massachusetts scott brown welcoming the g.o.p. frontrunner for president. scott brown: the next president of the united states, donald trump. sera: donald trump rallied the crowd of 1,000 at a portsmouth, new hampshire, car dealership appearing with brown who has organized a series of political events. trump: whether it's new hampshire, iowa, south carolina, we're doing so well. >> he's a strong candidate, and i think he is going to do what he says he's going to do. whenever he sets goals, he accomplishes what he sets out to

campaign trail making several stops across the new hampshire yesterday. the former florida governor hosted town halls in amherst and hampstead. bush defended his foreign policy including plans for a no-fly zone over syria. senator rand paul was there as well. he spoke with a few dozen supporters at a pizza shop in newport. earlier this week paul chose not to take part in the g.o.p. under-card debate, but instead his campaign says he reached at least seven million voters through national t.v. appearances and through on-line forums. paul telling voters there's no place for donald trump in the g.o.p. antoinette: flipped upside-down right now state police investigating this deadly crash the one-car crash happened on route 1 northbound at lowell night. the victim, a 46-year-old man from peabody, has not been identified. waltham police searching for a bank robbery suspect. the armed thief caught on camera.

second avenue friday. the suspect dressed in a black hoodie, black ski mask, and dark sunglasses. police describe the weapon as a semi-automatic handgun. the bank teller said it appeared to be real. anyone with information is asked to call waltham police. doug: new this morning the lawrence city council is planning to hold a public hearing on monday on a proposal to limit panhandling. that would include making it a crime to ask for money near a bank or a.t.m. mayor daniel rivera says this is intended to discourage people going to lawrence to buy heroin. he says they often spend all they have on the drug and leave themselves without the money needed to get home. antoinette: on the road to the super bowl. the patriots with a big win over the kansas city chiefs yesterday. it felt like the patriots took a time machine back to week 10 in this game. doug: edelman was back, gronk was strong, and as bob halloran tells us, it's full steam ahead

the charges he could be facing. frank: doug and antoinette, police say this man is lucky to be alive after he crashed he left his car and then wandered into the woods at night. he was all alone and without a cell phone. police are crediting the rescue of the seriously injured man to a k9 officer named briggs. state police responded to a rollover crash friday night on interstate 89 in enfield; but when they arrived, all they found was a 2003 buick. trooper janell smith: we checked for the driver. there was some blood in the vehicle, but no driver was located in the area. frank: trooper janell smith says borneman of springfield, was driving southbound when he guard rail. at the time, officers didn't he was ejected from the car. officers checked with hospitals and family, but borneman could trooper: that is when we pushed further northbound on the same what appeared to be signs that embankment, and we saw

headed northbound. frank: state police asked for assistance from the lebanon police department's k-9 unit to track the missing person. officer: we tracked up a ridge. it was all ice and snow. it was tough terrain. frank: police say borneman walked through ice and snow and across a fast moving brook. crews worked their way around, walked up a ridge and that's when k-9 briggs spotted him under a tree. borneman was found unconscious around 4:30 a.m. in lebanon, ten hours after the crash. jonathan tracey: briggs actually found him before we did. he came right up on him and pretty much put his nose to his face, and it startled the guy and he sat up a little bit. frank: the hanover fire department provided immediate assistance by extending a ladder over the brook to pull borneman to safety. >> the fire department coming out and assisting us getting this guy back across that brook without having to go back in the water. they did a great job too. frank: borneman could also face charges for drug possession. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. troopers say speed appears to be a factor. frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meterologist mike wankum.

some nice views outside. to the left you're seeing over boston harbor. to the right you're seeing it outside our station right now. a little deck of clouds kind of sort of hampering some of the view that you'll have this morning but a gorgeous sunrise. speaking of which the sunrise this morning is at 7:10. remember back on january 4, that was our latest sunrise of the year. 7:14. by the time we get to ground hog day we're back below 7:00. then our earliest sunrise of the year june 7, at 5:07. almost two hours. let's talk about what will be going on today and tomorrow. we've got some storm system moving off shore. look how big this thing is. again it's mostly going to be off shore but it will be close enough to us that we could see a little snow. then we've got this one up here which will come sweep inning here tomorrow morning. >> that: will also give us a chance of snow. that. as you look over the city right now, steady rain. rain ahead. maybe snow in this case. we have a little bit of snow to talk about. 34 degrees. dew point 22 and the winds out of the west right now at 10 miles an hour giving us a wind chill index of 26 degrees.

high temperatures will be in the mid 30's but what will happen tomorrow, look at that. only into the 20's for monday and tuesday. we've got some cold air coming in to this forecast. high temperatures today over worcester about 31 degrees for a high. going to be about 34 degrees in uxbridge for a high. down through the south shore, hull where it will be 35 to, well, as you look down to taunton 36. new bedford checking in at 37 degrees for a high temperature. sunshine this morning but fading away to some clouds as we head through the afternoon. let's talk a little bit about that snow. first off we have to get cold temperatures in here. we'll have that tonight. we don't have to worry about rain as we saw yesterday. this will be a snow event we're talking about. it's these two systems that will be impacting us. let me show you how they play out. here's the map. as we go through the day today, notice how the cloud cover sets up. 36789. 30 this afternoon. we may even have a few sprinkles of rain that work their way in late this afternoon into the evening hours. then that storm system really spins up. you see what happens. it starts to throw moisture. this is 8:00 tonight. there may be some mixing at the cape. we may get a little enhancement as this tries to back its way back into the coast.

forms up. this is at midnight tonight. we have snow to maybe a little bit of mix going on. as you look towards the cape, cape ann you might want to keep a close eye on this one because it's start to go look more and more like it may enhance into that area. we're not looking at a lot of snow. maybe towards the three-inch category is a possibility. 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, here comes the snow showers coming through. they'll come sweeping in right during the morning commute. again they're nogoing to amount to too much but as you have a commute going on and you start throwing snow at it, you know what happens. here's what it will look like. about 1-3 inches of snow right along the cape and through the coastal areas. and then inland just a dusting to an inch because of those snow showers coming through and perhaps a little bit of enhancement as you look out to the berkshires. not a big event. we haven't seen much snow this year. this is one of the steadier amounts of snow that we have. on the computer model, it keeps the 1-3. there may be enhanced areas that get us up close to the three-inch category. here's the forecast. today not that bad. sunshine.

a murder-suicide right now. police responded to request for a well-being check on forest street around five last night. when they arrived they found two residents were dead. the d.a.'s office says this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety. doug: right now, a desperate search continues off the coast of hawaii. a marine from hingham among 12 missing after two military helicopters crashed. 23-year old christopher orlando's friends and family are holding out hope. the search entering its third been hampered by choppy waves and low visibility. no word yet on what caused those choppers to crash. antoinette: another connection to hingham here. a hingham man is among a group of americans just released from prison in iran. matthew trevithick detained for 40 days is on his way home right now. four other americans were also released under a negotiated prisoner exchange, including "washington post" reporter jason rezaian. as part of the exchange, the

this epidemic. this week the house unanimously approved a bill that, among many recommendations, limits initial painkiller prescriptions to a week's supply and recommends cities and towns set up "prescription drug drop boxes" where medications can be safely discarded. the house bill differs significantly the governor's recent stronger proposal, which limits initial prescriptions to three days, and lets doctors commit patients involuntarily to drug treatment facilities for up to 72 hours if they're considered in immediate danger. the senate passed its own version of a bill last fall, ostensibly focused on curbing addiction through education and prevention-- a start, but not enough. frankly, the strongest elements of all three proposals now need to be reconciled and melded into an aggressive plan of action. partisan politics rules the federal government, but massachusetts residents can take heart that this governor and legislature have proven they can-- despite legitimate
