some folks waking up to two, three, even four inches. randy: how long do you think it will last today. cindy: the next few hours we will continue to deal with the snow. it will taper off mid to late morning. it will be out of here. we do have a winter weather advisory up until 10g this morning particularly near the coastline. you can see the back edge of the snow here is out through parts of just areas west of the worcester area back into western massachusetts. we've got the steadiest snow right now. you can see the darker blues showing up right along 495 eastward. in particular up across northern and north eastern massachusetts. you can see the it have ibility is running near a mile. so no real intense bands of snow out there right now but it is falling at a rate that is enough to slow you down. it will continue to do that for the next hour, hour-and-a-half or so. but by about 6:00 this morning, notice how we're starting to see those bands shift a little farther off shore. by about 8:00 this morning, i think this is really showing signs of winding down. we'll get into some sunshine this afternoon. so the amounts on average about

however, there have been some higher totals where locally some spots could see up to five inches of snow. we have an arctic front racing by this morning. temperatures. 20's now. teens to the west. and that's where we're headed. the temperatures go nowhere today even though the sun comes out we will see those temperatures hold pretty steady. the winds pick up as well. so wind chills falling into the single digits and teens here by the end of the day. so cold is on the way. we're going to break down the timeline on that snow for you coming up. let's get you out to the roads. the road crews have been doing their things all night. olessa: but it is still slick out there especially the smaller roadways. the zakim and the leverett connector have snow on them. as the snow keeps falling, hard to keep up with. no overnight construction to contend with. once again budget in the extra travel time heading into boston. south of town an accident-free trip but i did spinouts on on my way in.

if you're heading north of town we're in good shape. expecting the trains and the buses to start the morning on schedule. emily. emily: thank you. stories we're following right now. police are investigating a murder-suicide after a couple was found dead inside their waltham home. they were called to the home on forest street saturday night for a well-being check. property records list the owners as kevin and jeannine o'connor. neighbors tell newscenter 5 they didn't know the couple well, but they had a close family. randy: state department is trying to find three missing american contractors in iraq who disappeared friday. there are reports that they were kidnapped. the arab news channel al-arabiya claims they were taken by militias in baghdad. the u.s. embassy says it's working with iraqi authorities. right now a hingham native is back home finally free after being held in an iranian prison for weeks. emily: eyeopener's erika tarantal joins us now with his emotional return. erika: ew trevithick spent 40 days in that notorious prison in

now he is back with his family. this is our first look at trevithick as he arrived on u.s. soil. the first thing he did when he walked into logan airport was put his arms around his mother. university graduate was studying farsi in tehran. that's when he was abducted though the details are unclear. trevithick's mother got the call just before 5:00 a.m. on saturday that he was free and coming home. we spoke to the family before he arrived at logan. out. we are just enormous lee grateful to everybody in the government. erika: trevithick was released americans were freed by the iranian government in a separately negotiated prisoner swap. the tense talks to free him were so precarious that immediate tell anyone he'd been detained. the prison where he was held has a reputation for brutality against political prisoners. but the conditions trevithick encountered are unclear. emily? emily: erika, thank you. three of the four other

brief stop in geneva. the fourth detainee chose to remain in iran. the state department says the americans will be checked out at a military hospital near ramstein air force base before heading home. women after a violent attack. police say the victim was walking home from work in chelsea when three masked men moved in. it happened on lynn street extension around 9:30 saturday night. the victim says the men punched, kicked, and slashed her face several times before taking off. residents say even before this incident, they didn't feel comfortable walking here especially late at night. >> i'm out no later than maybe 6:00 or 7:00. at 9:00-9:30 it gets kind of randy: the victim drove to the hospital where police say she was treated for serious injuries. there are now increased patrols in the area as police search for

emily: waking up to snow overnight on the ground. thankfully a long weekend for a lot of folks but if you are heading in, it can be. cindy: the timing. i think the worst of it is for the next couple of hours.

had 1.3 inches of snow. that's more than we had had all season. this is our biggest event of the season so far. we've got slick roads out there this morning. reduced visibility. in general, the snow is tapering off. widespread between about 6:00 and 8:00 this morning. but it may linger just a little bit longer in north eastern massachusetts. we do have this winter weather advisory up for the eastern part of the state until about 10:00 this morning. travel is being slowed down. the snow has been falling throughout the night. we have had our highest totals here over parts of the south massachusetts. got a report of four inches in hanover so that is one of the higher totals. each bridgewater over three. east freetown close to three. taunton over an inch. for you. aate love reports coming in boston area. lynne. lexington an inch-and-a-half. out in westborough we've had close to three inches of snow. the snow has been coming down.

and steady progress here with the back edge west of the worcester area but there are patches when you get in this where that darker blue is showing up a little bit more. that is where the snow is falling at a pretty good clip right now. that extends right through framingham down toward places like franklin over to norfolk and this extends north ward a little bit as well up toward acton. we do have the snow coming down for a decent slip through the next hour or so. by 6:00 this morning notice it's becoming a little bit more patchy in nature. by about 8:00 this morning a lot of it is off shore. so it is slowly going to be winding down here this morning. on average it's about 2-4 inches for many of us although with the higher totals already and the snow still coming down just south of boston locally a few spots coming in close to five inches down that way. the temperatures are in the 20's right now. but we have got dramatic changes coming because the snow is coming in with an arctic front. once this goes by, the winds shift to the west. look at the temperatures to our west. teens and then below zero. it is 12 below right now in minneapolis.

that is the actual temperature. so that's the air mass that will be working on in. notice how the temperatures hold pretty steady throughout the day. even though we brighten it up noontime with breaks of sun through the afternoon. but those winds get very, very active. look what it does to the wind chill. by noon, it's feeling like it's in the single dimming its and teens by day's end it feels like it's close to zero in some areas. so you want to dress for that bitter wind chill today. wind advisory up for the cape, the islands. late today through tomorrow. we could see wind gusts to 50 miles per hour. so out the door tomorrow morning, these are the low temperatures. single digits and teens but with that wind blowing, it will feel much much colder. that wind is with us all day long into tomorrow. in fact, the winds are going to stay gusty through wednesday. so wind chills out the door tomorrow morning. look at this. its going to feel like it's below zero and during the day, wind chills only recover into the single digits. even though we get into the 20's tomorrow it won't feel like it. overall the winds ease. the temperatures start to come up late in the week. as we head toward friday night

emily: thank you. a family dog is recovering at unprovoked attack. right now, police are searching for two men they say came into the family's yard in rutland and beat the dog. it was an emotional reunion yesterday for the thibodeau family. their dog abbie was attacked saturday morning and suffered serious head injuries. a family member heard abbie barking and chased the men away. >> i just can't manage that anybody would do anything to a dog coming into my yard and hurt her. if they did to my dog, you know, whose dog is next? emily: abbie is now out of the hospital but still needs pain medication and special care. snand 4:49. a look at your economy. asian shares skid lower today after another dismal day of trading on wall street friday. the dow plummeted 390 points to close at 15,988. u.s. markets are closed today for martin luther king, jr., day.

boston city leaders will host their 46th annual m.l.k., jr., breakfast this morning. it's hailed as america's oldest breakfast honoring the civil rights leader. randy: a couple in california celebrates their marriage which has lasted longer than most people have been alive. nicholas and rafaela ordaz have been married 82 years. their entire family was there to mark the occasion yesterday. they say the secret is respect, affection, and letting go of the "small stuff." most of us know small stuff can be so big. emily: it can but it does not matter in the end of the congratulations to them. cindy: 82 years. olessa: can you believe that. cindy: amazing. all right. take a look behind me here. this is snow falling across the area right now. a lot of eastern massachusetts still dealing with it as we have been much of the night. in general, the snow has been light through the overnight hours.

this season now 2.5 inches as we had just over one inch fall through about midnight. last year at this point we had 5.5. on a typical winter we have already had more than a foot of snow at this point so it has been, as you know, pretty quiet winter so far but we've had a little bit of catch-up last night. areas south of boston from rockland to hanover reporting four inches of snow through the overnight hours. taunton over an inch. sharon about an inch-and-a-half. around the boston area, reports of two and even up to about three inches in south boston through the overnight. lynne has had an inch. lexington an inch-and-a-half. you head out toward metro west. westborough close to three inches of snow. the snow is still falling it's this one band right in here that has moved through framingham headed to 128 right now where the intensity has picked up a also bit. that's going to be the case for the next couple of hours. we'll watch these bands slowly push off shore. we have an arctic front coming on by. behind it, much, much colder air. temperatures are in the 20's here.
