this little girl thinks her father is pretty funny. but what he's saying doesn't even count as a "dad joke." the sweet exchange, ahead. good morning. i'm emily riemer. randy: and i'm randy price with cindy fitzgibbon. it's a very cold morning, cindy. cindy: yeah, not so funny out there this morning. the wind and the temperatures making for some bitter wind chills all day long. the kids need to be bundled up at the bus stop. the hats, the gloves, the heavy coats. cover it up out there. temperatures in the teens getting off the bus. only in the 20's, but it's the wind chill that is going to be no higher than the single digits all day long. this is what it feels like out the door right now. two below zero. that's what you want to dress for. that's the wind chill right now in boston. it feels like nine below in worcester. and these wind chills are going to be hovering near or below zero much of the morning. the winds are gusting now over 20 and 30 miles per hour. and the winds are only going to get stronger once the sun comes up. the potential is there this afternoon for wind gusts to 50 miles per hour. so we do have a wind advisory up until 7:00 this evening. temperatures most flee the teens

although it is just 12 worcester, orange, keene. 16 in boss ton. but that wind is going to be biting all day long. high pressure nosing in from the west. at least we'll see a little bit of sunshine mixing with the clouds but that gusty wind with those temperatures creeping only to about 20 degrees by noontime. holding in the 20's this afternoon. that wind chill near or below zero through mid morning. even by lunchtime into the afternoon, those wind chills mostly in the single digits today so bundle up. the cold wind is the story now. what about that weekend storm threat? we'll talk more about that coming up. let's get you tout the roads right now. back at it here on a tuesday after a long weekend for many. olessa: we're start to go see those delays picking up. a live look at the expressway. here it is by is south bay mall. you can see the northbound side of your trip already building that volume. just go to the maps and see the rest of your ride as you travel south. start to go seattle bit of a back-up on 24 out of brockton. route 3 looks good so far from weymouth. volume into the braintree split. once you get there your ride on the expressway almost half an hour at this point. already pretty busy to start. eastbound on the pike still only

and then as you head north,ate 93 southbound some delays down to dascomb road and once again as you travel down to spot pond. trains and bus doing okay. randy, emily. emily: thank you. right now commuters are bracing for what could be a tough ride on the mbta. randy: the "t" and bitter cold do not mix. the eyeopener's sera congi is live in quincy with the plans in place to prevent problems this morning. sera: randy and emily, and problems during weather like this are nothing new for commuters. however, the "t" has taken several steps and put a plan in place to hopefully minimize any overnight we saw empty red line trains running through stations in an effort to prevent problems later this morning. this comes just weeks after cracks in red line tracks-- likely because of the cold-- triggered disruptions on that problem-plagued line. on the same day an empty commuter rail train derailed on the haverhill line causing a

cancelled trips. the state said then this does not mean the new winter resiliency plan put into place for this year isn't working. that includes more than $83 million to fix infrastructure, upgrade snow removal and de-icing equipment, and improve storm operations. the "t" has also promised improved communication when bad weather hits. we'll keep you posted on any problems we see today. live at the quincy t-station, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: today the first hearings are scheduled for a new mbta service that's already on the chopping block. the t's fiscal control board wants to eliminate late night service on weekends. the board argues that the service, which is subsidized by the state, has had relatively low ridership. two public hearings will be held at the state transportation building today with a third scheduled for tomorrow in cambridge. right now convicted killer aaron hernandez is getting ready to head back to court. a date could be set today for his next murder case.

2012 double murder outside a boston nightclub. he is already serving life for the 2013 murder of a boston man. emily: right now we are learning new details as a hingham man spends his first days home with his family, including new insight into his life in a notorious prison. his south shore community, just happy to have him home this morning. the eye's doug meehan is live in hingham with the questions still left unanswered. doug? doug: emily. matthew trevithick returned home sunday after spending 40 days in an iranian prison. but his family still doesn't know why he was taken in the first place. the 30-year-old declined comment as he arrived home last night. but his family tells "the herald" he lost 12 to 13 pounds in captivity. they knew something was wrong when they hadn't heard from him in 24 hours. they say he always got in touch once a day because, as an american, he was being monitored.

support. >> we are happy that he's home, yes. we're very happy for them. they've been very private about it. we also want to respect that. doug: his family was encouraged not to talk about trevithick's imprisonment to ensure the safest possible outcome. the family says he's doing well after getting some much-needed u-burger and dunkin' donuts. and he's getting caught up in boston sports. they have also asked for privacy. live in hingham, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now a navy salvage ship is helping in the search for a hingham marine and eleven others missing since two helicopters collided in hawaii. twelve crew members were aboard those two marine choppers when they crashed thursday night. searchers found life rafts yesterday that were carried on the aircraft, but still no sign of the crew. corporal christopher orlando of hingham is among the missing. randy: tonight boston mayor marty walsh will deliver his state of the city address. a group of parents say they plan to protest the symphony hall

education cuts. walsh plans to address the city's schools in tonight's speech in addition to innovation, housing, and crime issues. you can watch the mayor's speech right here on channel 5. coverage begins at 7:30 right after newscenter 5 at 7:00. new this morning. today state lawmakers will look at a plan that would hike taxes on the wealthiest residents of massachusetts. the proposal would scrap the state's flat tax code and create a two-tiered system. it would increase taxes by 4% on anyone earning over a million dollars. even if it's approved by the legislature, this could be a three-year process. it would still need to be approved by voters as a ballot question. emily: commitment 2016 and a crowded campaign trail as candidates make a last-ditch effort to secure votes in new hampshire and iowa. and that also means things are getting very heated. the eye's erika tarantal is here with the new skirmishes. erika: it's less than two weeks now until the iowa caucuses so

sprint for support. republicans ted cruz and john kasich are in new hampshire today. donald trump and democrat bernie sanders are stumping in iowa. as for the republican frontrunners, the war of words between trump and cruz is at an all time high. at liberty university monday trump made an appeal to evangelical voters calling for christian unity. meantime cruz responded to trump calling him a nasty guy who nobody likes. trump: two corinthians, right? two corinthians 3:17. that's the whole ball game. where the spirit of the lord, right? cruz: donald seems to be a little rattled. erika: as for the democrats, bernie sanders and hillary clinton now appear destined for a long primary fight. on the campaign trail monday, sanders blasted clinton for getting speaking fees from big banks. clinton, not attacking sanders, continued to argue her experience sets her apart. emily: new this morning. new numbers show police in massachuetts are pulling hundreds of guns off the streets. assault rifles were confiscated in almost 130 cities and towns last year. the data was filed as part of a "gun crime" survey. but authorities say that number might actually understate the number of guns being seized. randy: breaking right now. twitter is coming back online at this hour after a worldwide outage. users trying to access the site initially got an error message saying it was "over capacity." but now mobile and web users are just getting an "internal error." it's not clear what's causing the outage but we'll keep you posted. the music world mourning the loss of a bright star this morning. burning, burning, burning one of his solo hits in the '80's. but frey is best known as a founding member of the eagles, playing guitar and singing lead vocals on many of the band's hits. many of those songs co-written by frey and don henley. he died of complications from

all day long. you can see the sky s are mainly clear now though. west. there will be a flow off the great lakes so lake-effect snows to our west. otherwise a pretty quiet weather pattern the next couple of days. sun will mix with a few clouds. the strong winds will make temperatures getting up into the low to mid 20's feel much much colder. we may never get to 20's today. upper teens forecast through the worcester hills. with those winds holding through the overnight only coming down a bit, those temperatures drop down into the teens tonight. with tomorrow. still cold and dry right through the day on friday. friday. this is very important. we've got an area of high pressure to our north. inning that's been fairly absent with storms as of late. here is that storm coming up out of the carolina coastline here through the mid atlantic states. by saturday notice the wind field wrapping in off the ocean. we have a full moon on saturday so the tides will be astronomically high. there will likely be beach

north of town 93 south. normal volume out of methuen and then once again as you travel concord street down to 'spo pond and approach the leverett connector. okay. i'm olessa stepanova. that's a look at your traffic. >> i managed to yell out before i knew it, it threw me backwards. randy: lucky to be alive. a new hampshire man survives an avalanche on mount washington and lives to tell about it. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is back with the tough lessons he's learned. erika? erika: corey swartz is a skilled climber, but he and five others found themselves in a tight spot with no time to react. corey and two of his friends were climbing tuckerman ravine when he says his friends went ahead. he believes they may have gone too far and triggered the avalanche. the trio and two others were dragged a couple hundred feet in just 20 seconds. corey dug himself out and helped the others.

is okay but disappointed with himself for not being more careful. even with the experienced, things can go wrong very quickly. erika: looking back corey says he should have had his avalanche gear with him and should have been more concerned when his friends went ahead into dangerous territory. climbers will learn from his story. emily: your economy headlines this tuesday. modest gains for asian stocks after china's quarterly growth met expectations calming some of the jitters in the region. u.s. stocks are reacting positively to the news with wall street will resume trading today. >> i do quite a bit of driving. it cost me $20 to fill my tank. emily: a price plunge at the pump. the state average is down to $1.87 a gallon. gas hasn't been this cheap since march 2009. heating oil prices also taking a dive. the average home owner saving about a thousand dollars for the year. from travel to shipping costs, there are some amazing savings.

here involving an overturned car. you can see behind me. sky 5 over the scene. this accident happened on 128 southbound at 4 and 225. and then for a little while there they only had the left lane squeezing by. as you can see the left and right lane is passing through but the center lane s are closed as they continue to investigates that crash and delays are already back to route 3. plan accordingly. let's get over to the maps once again. i'll show you where this is taking place as you 128 southbound. right over by 4 and 225 so you've got two lanes still shut down and that back-up now beyond route 3. also watching an accident on 93 southbound at montvale avenue. those delays start back in wilmington. stop-and-go ride east round. volume building as well on route 3 into braintree and then a half-hour as you travel braintree to boston on the expressway north where the h.o.v. lane has not reopened yet. it's running late today. expect the extra heavy delays. trains and buses doing okay. emily: thank you. some of the stories we're following right now on the eye. the mbta running empty red line trains overnight preparing for

commute. earlier this month cracks in the tracks led to significant delays on that line. today we should find out when convicted killer aaron hernandez will go on trial again. the former patriots star is charged with killing two men in boston in 2012. he's already serving life for the murder of odin lloyd. and breaking news. right now twitter is down worldwide. twitter is coming back online after a worldwide outage. the social media site is showing error messages on the web on mobile. it's not clear what's causing the outage, but an earlier screen indicated it was "over capacity." randy: right now a chelsea woman is facing charges after police say she lied about being violently attacked. the eyeopener's kelley tuthill is live in chelsea with what really happened. kelley: during the investigation, police say they uncovered several inconsist tenseees in the woman's story which turned out to be just that. a story. police say 25-year-old denissa perez was actually trying to

slashed and hit. she had claimed she was beaten and robbed by three men on her way home from work saturday night. it's unclear why she made up the story. perez is charged with misleading a police investigation. she's expected to be arraigned later this month. live in chelsea, i'm kelley tuthill, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: a quincy man is facing charges for allegedly impersonating a woman online to try and get people to attack her and her family. thomas sheehan was arrested last week after police say he used a woman's picture on an adult website asking for people to kidnap and rape her. police claim he also posted photos of her children saying they should be tortured. sheehan is expected in court today. emily: a disturbing discovery in chicopee. a camera found inside the bathroom of a truck stop. the facility says it installed the camera to counter hate crimes, and it was pointed in the direction of a common area so as to avoid an invasion of privacy. so far four individuals have filed complaints through their attorneys.

we're actually watching the energy off the coast of the northwest. that is what is going to be moving in and turning in to our storm. so this nor'easter will be developing on saturday. that we know. there will be some impact with snow and wind, but the question is how close is that storm going to come to us? is it going to fringe us or be a stronger, more direct hit. that will determine just how much snow we get. you can see the storm right here on saturday to our south. also high pressure to the north. so in between, a fetch off the ocean. there's a full moon on saturday so the tides will be running astronomically high. beach erosion, coastal flooding certainly concerns with this. depending on how close it comes, if it comes closer to us, there will be heavier snow and stronger winds. we will keep a close eye on this certainly in the days ahead. impacts potentially of the snow, the wind and also those coastal impacts as well. in the meantime we've got the strong winds out there now gusting over 30 miles per hour already. up.

hour this afternoon. a wind advisory up until 7:00 p.m. it feel like it is below zero for a lot us. nine below the wind chill in worcester now. wind chills get no higher than the single digits this afternoon. they're going to be near or below zero through mid morning. at least we'll have sunshine today. temperatures coming up into the teens and lower 20's. quiet weather as high pressure noses on in. we'll keep sunshine mixed with clouds through thursday. still gusty winds tomorrow. less wind but still cold. look at that. just 29 on thursday. let's get you back out to the roads and update you on the situation out there, olessa. olessa: thank you, cindy. good morning, everyone. we're talking about this situation here. this is 128 southbound right over by 4 and 225. as you can see there's an overturned car. they're working on the scene to get that car off the roadway. in the mean tile the right lane and the left lane squeezing by but the center lanes are closed. we have pretty heavy delays getting into this accident scene. let's go to the maps. i'll show you what's going on once again. this is southbound. fake a look at this red shading all the way back to 93 and beyond that at this point approaching this crash scene. give yourself tons of extra travel time.

south at montvale avenue. that volume starts back in will ming top. eastbound on the pike we're building that volume 25 minutes 495 to 128. northbound on the expressway very slow as well. to boston into boston. the h.o.v. reopening late this morning. we have extra heavy delays. problems on the trains. every line affected at this point. minor westbound delays for the blue line. minor northbound delays for the orange line. blainetree branch has minor delays for the red line. also watching some problems on the green line. delays. d-branch moderate eastbound delays so plan accordingly. emily, randy. randy: thank you. concern about the bitter cold this morning let to special precautions overnight on the "t." emily: the eye's sera congi is live in quincy with what commuters need to know today. sera: the "t"'s new plan to prevent problems during cold weather will be put to the test this morning. overnight we saw some red line

warmed up. a few weeks ago another cold snap led to cracks in some parts of the red line. that led to delays and cancellations. also on the same day, an empty commuter rail train derailed on the haverill line. that caused problems as well. now the state defended its new winter resiliency plan. that's $83 million spent to fix infrastructure, upgrade snow removal as well as de-icing equipment. as well as improve snow operations. the "t" has also vowed to improve communications during bad weather conditions. live this morning at the quincy t-stop, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: the family of matthew trevithick has issued a statement recently. they say that matthew is happy to be home. they are understandably asking for privacy. matthew declined comment when he

home last night. he and his loved ones trying to regain normalcy after he spent 40 days in an iranian prison. we still don't know why. matthew would always reach out to his family every day. when he hadn't contacted them in 24 hours, they knew something was wrong. during his imprisonment family encouraged not to tell anybody so as to ensure a safe possible outcome to get him here, back to hingham. we understand while he was in prison he almost lost up to about 15 pounds. as far as getting back to some sense of normalcy, that includes catching up on some boston sports. we're flieive hingham here this morning, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now a navy salvage ship is helping in the search for a hingham marine and eleven others missing since two helicopters collided in hawaii. twelve crew members were aboard those two marine choppers when they crashed thursday night. searchers found life rafts yesterday that were carried on the aircraft, but still no sign of the crew.

hingham is among the missing. kelley: a chelsea woman is facing charges after police say she lied about being violently attacked. she claimed three men attacked her saturday night near lynn street extension, but police found several inconsistencies in the woman's story. police say 25-year-old denissa perez was actually trying to break up a fight between several men inside a home when she was slashed and hit. it's unclear why she made up the story. perez is charged with misleading a police officer in a criminal investigation. she's expected to be arraigned later this month. live in chelsea, kelley tuthill, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: a new hampshire man is hoping others will learn from him after he survived an avalanche on mt. washington. corey: we tumbled for what seemed like forever. snow and debris in my eyes and in my face. i had a hard time breathing. erika: corey swartz, a skilled climber, says he should have never left his avalanche gear behind when he went up tuckerman ravine. he was with friends when he says

into dangerous territory he thinks triggering the slide. they were all dragged a couple hundred feet and a skier was hurt. corey managed to dig himself out and help the others. emily: breaking right now. twitter is just coming back online after a worldwide outage. overnight users trying to access the site initially got an error message saying it was "over capacity." it's not clear what's caused the outage, but we'll keep you posted. randy: today we should get a new glimpse of convicted killer aaron hernandez. a date could be set today for his next murder case. hernandez will be on trial for a 2012 double murder outside a boston nightclub. he is already serving life for the 2013 murder of a boston man. tonight boston mayor marty walsh will address education, crime, and housing in his state of the city address. you can watch the mayor's speech right here on channel 5. coverage begins at 7:30, right after newscenter 5 at 7:00. emily: a boston company will lead construction of wynn resorts' casino planned for

suffolk construction landed the one billion dollar contract. it's one of the largest private construction contracts ever awarded in massachusetts and is expected to create thousands of jobs over the next two years. the casino is set to open by the end of 2018. an unbelievable scene in prince george's county, maryland. emergency crews responding to a crash involved in a crash themselves. the ambulance heading to the scene struck a light pole on the side of the road. the pole went right through the roof of that car and out the other end just barely missing the driver's head. remarkably, the driver walked away from this. a five-year-old providence girl is back home safe this morning after the car she was sitting in was stolen. the girl's mom left her in the car when she ran into a restaurant to pick up food. about 10 minutes after the mom made the call to police, an officer spotted the little girl walking with a man, the girl apparently waved to the officer, tipping him off.

burning, burning, burning randy: the music world mourning the loss of a bright star this morning. that's glenn frey from one of his solo hits in the '80's. but frey is best known as a founding member of the eagles, playing guitar and singing lead vocals on many of the band's hits. he died of complications from pneumonia and other illnesses. glenn frey was 67. emily: the dallas mavericks on fire against the celtics. they drained 16 three-pointers as they served the c's a loss in overtime last night. the celtics had come back from a 17-point deficit early on in the game, making things exciting in the fourth quarter. but the mavs' dirk nowitzki couldn't be stopped. celtics lose 118-113. randy: a special reunion 10 years in the making. a florida couple found their yorkshire terrier ginger last week all the way in houston, texas. she had been missing for 10 years. the couple was able to confirm it was their pup using the microchip implanted in her. ginger does have to undergo

the family is relieved to have her home. some of the patriots biggest stars are doing a little trash-talking as they head into sunday's big game. emily: but they're not targeting the broncos. it all centers around this play from saturday's game. tom brady hit as he tries to score a touchdown. the refs ruled brady was just short. here's what brady has posted on facebook directed toward julien edelman-- "hey julian, how about a little less flexing and a little more blocking next time!!" edelman responds with this, "my bad, tom. it's just that usually when i dive for the pylon, it counts as a touchdown. love you, bud." randy: and of course, rob gronkowski wants to get in on it. he posted his own photo. a few clouds out there but it is all about the wind and the cold. 16 in boston. sustained winds out out of the west over 20. gusting over 30 right now. those winds could gust to 50 miles per hour today. wind advisories up until 7:00 this evening. that combination is tough. feels like it is below zero right now boston to worcester on north ward. wind chills hovering in the single digits down on the cape. that will be the case all morning. we'll hover near or below zero through about 9:00 or so. wind chills get nothing higher than the single digits to around 10 degrees this afternoon. even though the temperature s are going into the lower 20's in many areas, it will feel much colder. high pressure though keeping the weather quiet for the next several days. all eyes are focused on our potential weekend storm which is going to be coming off the carolina coastline on friday. this looks like it will have a big impact on the mid atlantic states. with high pressure do the north, we're going to have a fetch off the ocean from the east astronomically high tides due to a full moon.
