good morning and thank you for joining us. emily: and i' m emily riemer with cindy fitzgibbon. we are talking about the storm. cindy: things will change a lot in the overnight hours. we are going to get in on some of that snow slowly as the day wears on. i am not expecting a huge storm. take a look at the temperatures. teens and lower 20' s. not as much wind. here are your next 12 hours, patchy clouds. lots of sunshine today. temperatures coming up out of the 20' s to near 30 degrees this afternoon. a little wind. it will feel like it is in the teens. clouse from overnight are exiting. -- clouds from overnight are exiting. d.c. is expecting two feet of snow this weekend. energy right now dropping southward.

looking good along the bike. new hampshire. schedule. emily: right now an investigation is underway after narcan is used to save a one-year-old child. randy: and that' s not the only alarming part of this story. the eyeopener' s frank holland is live in worcester with what we know this morning. frank: this morning we know that little boy is expected to survive. police are now looking for anything that could have contributed to that one-year-old' s apparent overdose. it happened last week in an apartment here on wellington street. the telegram reports that is the same apartment where 2-year-old gigi brown died. no charges were ever filed in that case and investigators have not said how the little girl died. the apartment where both incidents happened is leased by gigi brown' s grandmother. as we' ve reported city inspectors had expressed concerns about conditions in the apartment. the child in this most recent case is recovering and is now in

this morning we' re hearing from the man who watched it all unfold. >> damage to the building. randy: that was one of six explosions john mcdonald heard and captured on his cell phone yesterday as he stood on his balcony along school street. the cab driver and passenger had already gotten out but were still too close to the flames. that' s when mcdonald says the taxi driver jumped into action to save them both. >> he literally picked her up and moved her away from the she was quite thankful for that. s are both doing ok this morning. it' s unclear what caused the explosion. emily: this morning a new poll showing a big gap on the road to the white house. donald trump getting 34% in the new wmur-cnn poll of new hampshire voters. ted cruz is 20 points behind him followed by jeb bush and marco but it' s someone who' s not on that list. who' s heating things up this morning. the eye'

has dos question -- trump has dodged questions about whether or not palin would be his choice for vp. emily: another crowded day on the campaign trail in new hampshire today. republicans marco rubio, chris christie, jeb bush, ted cruz, john kasich and jim gilmore are there. along with democrats bernie sanders and martin o' malley. all stumping for votes there. donald trump is in las vegas. hillary clinton is in iowa. randy: right now a new drive to make the roads safer. lawmakers taking up a bill today to get cell phones out of your hands here in the commonwealth. the eye' s todd kazakiewich is live in newton with what it means for drivers. cocco i am not driving, this vehicle is station -- todd: i am not driving, this vehicle is stationary. this new bill would mean drivers could not touch their cellphones at all behind the wheel not even to make a phone call or use their gps. the statistics are alarming. distracted driving accounts for one in every four highway deaths. a 2010 law already bans texting while driving but lawmakers say that'

s not enough. under a new hands-free bill a first offense carries a fine of $100. some supporters still say hands-free is not risk-free. >> there is no difference in the cognitive distraction of the phone call. todd there' s no sign of a total : ban yet. but road safety experts believe this is a step in the right direction. as for today' s debate state senators will look to make amendments. we' ll keep you posted. reporting live in newton, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: a hearing is set for today on the state' s so-called puppy lemon law. that law provides protection for people who buy a sick puppy without knowing it. the proposal would ban the sale of puppies and kittens under eight weeks old. it also involves more regulations on certain breeders. a separate bill would require owners of rented or foreclosed properties to check for abandoned animals. emily: the mbta' s troubled green line extension project may be

drastically cut back. the head of the t' s fiscal management board says the project' s budget needs what he calls brutal cuts. the green line extension was originally supposed to cost $2 billion but project managers now say it could cost at least $3 billion. extending train service to somerville and medford is the focus of the project. a new federal report gives the mbta low marks on keeping those trains running. s light rail lines like the green line ranked third worst in the nation when it came to breakdowns in 2014. the other lines, red, red -- red, orange and blue came in sixth from the bottom among 15 systems. the commuter rail ranked 19th out of 24. an mbta spokesman questioned the data saying there is no universal standard for mechanical failure. frank: nine minutes after 5:00, asian stocks tumbling again -- randy: nine minutes after 5:00, asian stocks tumbling again.

their quarterly report to the state gaming commission. the casino generated more than $11 million in gross gaming revenue in december. but the cash flow has been down every month for the past 5 months. a plan for an islamic cemetery in dudley is facing opposition. the islamic society of greater worcester bought a former dairy farm but still needs a special permit to operate a cemetery there. according to the worcester telegram, some neighbors are concerned about a burial ritual which sometimes means bodies are buried without caskets. they' re worried about possible water contamination. randy: right now, a man trying to cross a busy street is dead. the victim was hit as he was trying to cross route 9 in framingham last night. our partners at the metrowest daily news report the 25-year-old was in a crosswalk when he was struck. the driver who hit him was questioned by police. no charges have been filed. police impounded the car. lawmakers, clashing over whether the u.s. emily: the bill just blocked by congress.

campaign trail. we will get to that. first, we want to check in with cindy. randy: blizzard watch. cindy: it is for the d.c. area and the new york area from -- out to rhode island. you need to know what is happening. i put forecast snow out for big cities. d.c., baltimore, 18 to 24 inches. philadelphia, one foot to one foot and a half -- to one half e. major impacts with the snow, the wind, and the roads. there will be some bigger impacts. here locally, not expecting the significant impacts we have to the south. some snow moves in saturday afternoon and moves out monday morning area we will have strong wind along the coast line and

the storm will dive southward. as we get towards tomorrow morning, it is bringing ice and snow to parts of the deep south. into saturday morning, notice how the storm is ramping up coming off the carolina coast line. there will be heavy snow from new york down to d.c. it lists northward during the day on saturday. we are just starting to see the northernmost edge flirt with the south coast of new england. by lunchtime and early afternoon, the progress is northward. it is still mainly south of the pike. during the evening and overnight hours, it starts to come northward. you may bring in warmer air off the ocean. parts of the cape may flip to rain during the overnight hours into sunday morning. the potential is there

antoinette antonio, newscenter 5. randy: a narrow escape in quincy, as a taxi cab exodes. it happened in the hancock house parking lot on school street yesterday afternoon. a neighbor caught the fire and explosion on camera. firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes and it only took them seconds to douse the flames. both the passenger and the driver got out safely. murder after three skeletons of babies home, where murray lived with murray' s lawyer will also try to suppress evidence. randy: senate democrats have have banned syrian and iraqi country. that' any democratic amendments to the bill. the house legislation would have

required new fbi background checks, and individual sign-offs from high-ranking federal officials, before the admittance of any refugee from syria or iraq. emily: detroit is hoping the courts will put an end to the massive teacher sick-out. the latest job action has forced more than 85 of the districts school' s to close, the school district has filed a lawsuit to try and stop teachers from calling in sick. the sick-out was timed to president obama' s detroit visit. randy: more americans are living past their 100th birthdays. according to federal health officials, the number is up by 44% since the year 2000. women account for more than 80% of centenarians. heart disease is the leading cause of death for people in that age group. major airlines are preparing for that huge snowstorm that' s headed for the northeast and mid-atlantic. american, southwest, and delta are among the top airlines, already issuing travel waivers to passengers flying this weekend. american includes customers flying today.
