the first leg of that journey. >> and to our big story, and that monster snowstorm. it's moving its way up the east coast. you're looking live at our nation's capital where the snow is falling. >> it looks nice right now, heather. but boy! it's going to get going soon, right? >> let's remember, a snowstorm such as this one for them is like a 24- to 36-hour event. right now they're accumulating about a half inch to an inch an hour. give that 24 hours and see what you wind up with. in our area, boston along the mass pike, head north of there, the effects will be less and less if at all. head south, the effects build in terms of more and more snow. very sharp kind of cutoff or buildup in either direction. of course, the whole key is finding exactly where that crunch is going to be, because it could build up pretty quickly going south and diminish quickly going north. blizzard warning for the vineyard, because they're going to have heavy snow with strong wind. nantucket might face a similar situation. and a winter storm warning for the waters of the south shore
5:31 pm
connecticut. that's the winter storm warning. also winter weather advisory for northern connecticut and northern rhode island. here's the storm's track, just far enough away for us to avoid the worth but still get a pretty good amount of snow to the southern part of our area. it's moving in tonight before new york. 7:00 tomorrow morning. leading edge, hartford to providence. north. may never get north of route 2 but yet we'll still be accumulating snow from boston southward, heaviest around the cape saturday night. then it all starts to exit early on sunday. so my best estimate on snow accumulation would be one to three inches north of the pike, probably nothing north of route 2. and three to six inches south of the pike, especially southern worcester county, northern rhode island, northern connecticut. but providence to plymouth on south, including the rest of southeastern mass, we'll talk

5:44 pm
massive geyser. this happened overnight in a town called wauwatosa. when police arrived, the water was only bubbling from the ground. then it surged, shooting into the area. no one was hurt. several area businesses, as you would imagine, were impacted. >> looking live at the white house. d.c. is really where we're getting most of our pictures. the storm hasn't really gotten cooking yet, has it, harvey? >> well, you know what? it's a slow cook, all right? but it's definitely going to get done, i can tell you that. >> someone is going to be done, by the time this is done. >> they're snowing about a half inch to an inch per hour. they already have a couple of inches. when it's all said and done, they're probably going to have a couple of feet, around two feet would be my estimate. here is the area under not only a winter storm warning but a blizzard warning. and it does include new york and long island. but it also includes block island, as a watch, i should say, and the vineyard, because it might
5:45 pm
conditions on the islands there. for the rest of our region -- i'm sorry. i'll correct myself. it is a blizzard warning in effect for the vin-yard and block -- vineyards and block island. southeastern mass, the capes, all under a winter storm warning. that generally implies a potential of six inches or more. then we have a winter weather advisory, which generally implies about three to six inches of snow. i would not be surprised if those amounts are also realized up to let's say, worcester and across to boston, with amounts diminishing as you head north from there. that's the general idea. as we've been saying all along, we knew washington was going to be in, and baltimore and philly and new york, rite on the edge of the snowplow. our area in general on the edge of the snow. but the southern part of our area also on the edge of the heavier mouth of snow. here is
5:46 pm
continues to get its act together. it's going to make that move northeastward. just a little bit south of a classic track that would give boston a very major snowstorm, but it's close. even though boston may not qualify for a major snowstorm -- we'll see when it's all said and done -- it's possible that southeastern mass and the cape could come close to that. 11:00 tonight, probably already snowing in new york city. about 7 a.m. in the morning, hartford to providence. pike. in new hampshire and vermont, the air is going to stay very dry, with high pressure in control. so there's a northern lid to how the idea, though, is sometimes you just barely get in and or heavy snow. even though i'm showing the forecasted amounts, we could get
5:47 pm
showing in even a smaller number of miles. steadiest snow for boston area immediately would be tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow night and then tapering off after midnight, ending around dawn on sunday. lastly in southeastern mass and the capes. so my estimate is north of the pike, north of boston, one to three inches. south of boston, south of the pike, for a distance, three to six, and then roughly hartford to providence, potential of six to 10 inches of snow. a lot of wind potential around the capes. 29 is our temperature right now. tonight we'll drop to the teens, along the inland areas. 20's along the coast. we've got the battle between cold air to the north, and just south of the carolinas it's very warm. just look at this. this is estimated gusts from one of our computer models. atlantic city, 11:00 tonight, 36. tomorrow morning, 55-mile-per-hour gusts, could be over 60.
5:48 pm
nantucket, 60 to 70-mile-per-hour gusts. we're talking about a lot of wind, especially for the capes and islands. there is the high wind warning as well as the coastal flood watch. for late tomorrow night around 11:00, that high tide, also for the high tide, most especially that comes around 11:00 on sunday morning. it is the area on the south shore down to the cape that can expect a two to three-foot storm surge with 10- to 20-foot waves. pockets of moderate flooding also possible. to the north, not as severe as the south in terms of waters, being a little bit more removed from the storm center. let's see if we can take you to the seven-day. after we're done with the storm early sunday, we get a nice respite, nice and sunny. take a little while to clear on the cape. in the 30's in the afternoon. a little milder for monday and
