the storm is moving off the coast, but there are still concerns. we have live team coverage we begin with storm team 5' s danielle vollmar. doug: danielle: the sky is beginning a bit of snow. this was the highest total, 15.3 inches of snow. on the vineyard, 15 inches of snow in south plymouth. 8.5 inches. the farther north, the lower the totals. in boston, 6.1. we are starting to see more sunshine across most of the area. this area of low pressure gets out of here and high pressure builds in nicely. as you look over boston now, you see sunshine reflecting off the buildings. this will help to melt the snow. it is 23 degrees. the wind is out of the north at 14 making it feel like 11 degrees. bundle up if you are headed outside today. as we go through the day, we will see sunshine in boston with

mike wankum will be back to talk about the wind. antoinette: thank you. in our area the cape really , getting the brunt of this storm. doug: wind and snow making for really rough conditions. stormteam 5 meteorologist a.j. burnett is live in sandwich with how things look right now. how do things look now? a.j.: the tide is coming in rapidly. we are going to go this way. this is the boardwalk. you can see there is plenty of water. we don' t have reports of flooding into the parking lots or police station yet. but you can see at that little dip in the middle of the boardwalk, we still have another foot, maybe two feet of trying to go. it is quite possible we will be talking about flooding going on. i want to take you for a quick trip onto the dune they

they just restored the dune at town that beach -- town neck beach. they dredged the sand and pumped it into here. if this were not here, we would be talking about the tide parking lot. finished on tuesday seems like it is doing its job. >> we were expecting some erosion. that is what happened. the dune did its job. minor movement of some sand as you night. from now, we will see how this holds up to that next high tide. live in sandwich, meteorologist a.j. burnett, wcvb newscenter 5.

just in the north on the south shore, they' re dealing with the snow and watching that next high tide. and in marshfield, they' ve made changes this year to try and avoid serious problems. frank holland is live near the seawall there with conditions at frank? frank: good morning. a chilly, windy morning. the winds are coming from the north, with gusts up to 25 miles per hour. morning. as you can see and hear behind me, waves are crushing against the new seawall. whether it will hold up as a major concern for people who live along the coast. overnight, fast winds and high weights have tested it. it is nothing compared to the storm surge that knocked out 80 feet of the seawall last winter. we took a drive around marshfield earlier. the roads were generally clear. no difficulty driving. but we did see a lot of homeowners working hard to shov their sidewalks and their driveways. many businesses were covered in

in fact, we had to help push one woman out of the gas station. the cleanup continues this morning. the big event will be high tide at 11:00 this morning. a lot of concern about whether this seawall will hold up. some flooding is expected. in marshfield, frank holland, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: he has also helped me clean the snow off the top of my car. as frank mentioned, the tide is the next concern as this storm pulls away. doug: mike wankum is watching conditions all along the coast very closely. until high tide. direction. we talk about the damage down through sandwich. north. action and pushes it in a different direction. look at this in nantucket, 36 mile an hour wind gusts. we had wind gusts yesterday over 70 miles per hour.

wind gusts in the 20' s. along the north shore, close to 20 miles an hour. most of the wind is towards the cape. we do have the coastal flood warning for high tide. it is primarily at the cape. the northerly breeze blows the water into the cape cod bay and fills in. that is why we see erosion. that is an area we are watching this morning. we are not seeing major wave action. that is just a coastal flood advisory. for boston to portsmouth, we have an advisory for high tide around 11:00. you will want to stay away until about 2:00 this afternoon. things will settle that down. it will not be a problem for high tide later tonight. doug: right now, a man is recovering after being hit by a snow plow in yarmouth. this video in overnight from the scene on myrtle lane. police say the victim was walking along the road around 9:00 when he was hit. he was not seriously injured but

to be checked out. travel is tricky this morning as crews work to clear the roads. antoinette: let' s check in with jorge quiroga for the latest in boston. good morning. reporter: folks in boston know they have dodged the worst of it. juno a year ago. they know 46 inches seems manageable. nobody complaining. by midmorning, lots of folks had cleared their sidewalks. boston d.p.w. crews had plenty of time to do their thing. and by daybreak, main roads were well plowed. even smaller side streets we saw had gotten at least one pass. it was a big difference from the scene in washington, d.c. the nation' s capital, crippled

help. take a look at this convoy of heavy equipment a mile long leaving massachusetts early this morning for washington. crews from billerica and west bridgwater expected to be there in about seven hours, ready to get to work. this is the second time they have been called since 2010 after two back-to-back storms dumped 40 inches, the same group spent seven days in there digging out. after a relatively mild winter, the men tell me they are happy for the work. here in boston, it is a beautiful, clear day but frigid read if you are going out, bundle up. antoinette: good advice. thank you. this morning, the patriots are getting ready to lay it all on the line for another trip the super bowl. doug: and a big part of this will be an epic battle between some of the best quarterbacks in the game. our bob halloran is live in denver this morning with a look at a rivalry for the ages.

bob: certainly, football is a team game. this game comes with a storyline of having two of the best quarterbacks of all time going head-to-head in tom brady and peyton manning had done it 16 times before. brady 11-5 in those matchups. we comes to the regular season stats, patriots fans have got to like the numbers. those favor manning slightly. in the postseason, it favors brady. let' numbers of these matchups. manning does have the advantage in yards, touchdowns, and completion percentage and and nfl m.v.p., that is manning 5-2 compared to brady. brady has more touchdowns, fewer interceptions, higher completion percentage and four super bowl rings.

a lot of roads are clear. but be careful. doug: commitment 2016, and there could be a late entry in the race for the white house. billionaire media mogul michael bloomberg is reportedly considering an independent presidential run. the former new york city mayor has been a republican, a democrat, and an independent during his political career. new hampshire g.o.p. chair jennifer horn says she believes his candidacy would hurt the democratic nominee. bloomberg is expected to make his decision by the end of march. marco rubio and hillary clinton picking up a key endorsement at a critical time. the "des moines register" threw its support to the two candidates yesterday. the move comes just over a week before voters make their pick in the iowa caucuses. antoinette: city hall plaza is about to get much brighter. boston is in search of bids for a contract to install l.e.d. lights at city hall, much like the ones on the zakim bridge and the pru. the kids have more light to throw the football.

were not seeing much if anything at all in the way of snow yesterday. it depends on where you live. i want to talk about something that happened yesterday. we hit blizzard criteria in some locations, which means wind gusts to 35 miles an hour and a quarter mile visibility for at least three hours in a row or more. and heavy snow blowing and drifting. on nantucket, you had blizzard criteria for four areas. chatham, also four hours. and also on the vineyard. it was a dangerous situation yesterday afternoon. that area of low pressure pulling the way now. we are drying out. we are starting to see more sunshine. that is in the forecast through the day today as high pressure noses this one out of here. by 2:00 today, we are clearing out. maybe a couple of more clouds around the cape and islands. it will take longer for you to see sunshine.

the wind chill values will be we do have some wind. outside. we will see a lot of sunshine through the afternoon. wind chill values in the 20' s. 30' excuse me, the north shore and merrimack valley. low 30' s. chilly. along the south shore, 30 degrees in bridgewater. over the next three days, the upper 30' tuesday. we do have to talk about the wind and the coast. for more on that, here is mike. mike: the sun feels good. yesterday, we had incredible wind gusts. with the snow, there was blowing and drifting. we had blizzard conditions. that is

75 mile an hour wind gusts. nantucket close to 70 as well. same thing toward marshfield. towards cape an n, wind gusts over 50,000 hour. most of us saw it at the coast. inland was not as windy. yesterday, it was from the northeast. when that happens, you pilot the water on this side. when you switch it to a northerly direction, it undercuts the wave action. that is the reason we have this coastal flood warning until 2:00 this afternoon. high tide comes in around 11:00 this morning. even though we do not have the wind coming directly at the coast, we still have a lot of wave action as the storm system departs. that is why there is a close to the left coastal flood advisory. -- that is why there is a coastal flood advisory. days? clearing quickly.

as the cape and islands saw the most in terms of totals. they picked up one foot of snow. nantucket, close to a foot of snow. brockton, six inches. brookline, 5.3 inches. sudbury, 2.5 inches of snow. the snow is gone. the low pressure is pulling out. high pressure is building in for the day. we are going to see a lot of sunshine. that should help to do some melting. starting out on the colder side. we are in the 20' s in jaffrey, 30 on the cape. 29 on the vineyard. through the next 12 hours up to the merrimack valley, you will see temperatures warm into the s. through the afternoon. toward this evening, we will see more clouds filter in. even around boston, we are looking for a lot of sunshine

degrees and more clouds this evening. the other big thing is the winds. they are ramping up now. they will be backing off through the afternoon. coming up, mike is going to talk about the implications at our coastline. antoinette: thank you. right now, it' s a double whammy on cape cod. whipping winds churning up the ocean overnight. but that area also got pounded with snow racking up some serious totals. doug: stormteam 5 meteorologist a.j. burnett is live in sandwich with how things look. it looks like you could use a cup of hot chocolate. a.j.: or a good coffee. i will gladly take that. we saw a lot of people removing snow. in terms of the snowfall from the storm, i think a lot of people were saying this was just an old-fashioned snowstorm for the cape. what we are watching carefully and i will have my photographer zoom in behind me, that is the cape cod bay. it is crashing into old harbor

that is the body of water, normally a winding river into an estuary that feeds into the back of the parking lot. we will go the boardwalk. the low point of the boardwalk is almost submerged. there is some flooding here. normally, this is grass and swampland, that sort of thing. which is a typical. rodney, come back this way. we will show you why. high tide is coming in now. high tide still has another half hour before it gets here. let' s walk this way. a lot of beachgoers checking out what is going on. this is what is happening. very angry ocean now slamming against this area of sand which was just put here as part of a restoration project completed tuesday. the town of sandwich spent $3 million to dredge sand for the

many roads are covered and impassable so there' s a lot of work ahead for crews clearing streets. the mayor has been asking drivers to stay off the roads, . people walking trying to stay off the roads. a lot of sidewalks have not been cleared. the plows need to get out here and do their jobs. that will take some time. at reagan national airport, the airport has been closed. snow teams are trying to get snow off the runways. that is not likely to reopen today. we are looking at tomorrow. doug: quiet and peaceful. nothing but the birds chirping. thank you. mbta crews out last night making sure access to trolleys and subway cars is safe. this was at the fairbanks stop along the green line in brookline. shovel teams clearing snow and putting down sand as the trains moved in and out. by the way no reports of any , problems with t service. antoinette: we are just hours away from a showdown for the ages.

flooding. look at this along the new jersey coast. the storm intensified faster than expected. stronger winds meant a more significant high tide yesterday. in sea aisle, streets were morning. s basketball team had their bus stuck in this mess for 22 hours. 4:30, but by 9:15 their bus trip stalled on the pennsylvania turnpike, leaving them stranded 80 miles from home. the team was stuck overnight, waiting and wondering their story gaining national attention. hours later after some intense digging, the players, coaches , and staff ended up digging out and pushing the bus out to end a whirlwind trip for the dukes . doug: i go stir crazy spending that long in the house. mike: i am not old enough to

blizzard of 1978 around here. roads? doug: we were stuck and had a fish truck pick us up and drive us the rest of the way. [laughter] danielle: that bus stalin on the highway was because they had a lot of snow in pennsylvania. some of the snow totals, number one in baltimore, 29.2 inches of snow is what they picked up. the number one snowstorm of all time. d c, the number two snowstorm of all time. new york city almost tied the record at 26.9 inches to make it their second all-time leading snowstorm. closer to our area, we did pick up impressive totals especially farther south.

the highest total i saw was 15.3. you see about 12 inches, seven inches in hanover. north and west, the lesser the amounts. worcester picking up 2.8 inches. that snow ceasing now. the clouds beginning to clear out. we are seeing sunshine today. one thing we are watching is the winds. they are still strong, especially on the cape and nantucket up to 36 miles an hour wind gusts. we are watching that because it is piling up the water. high tide is in about 10 minutes at 11:00. kay khan under the coastal flood warning. the east coast of massachusetts under the coastal flood advisory. we are looking to minor and pockets of coastal flooding. through the next 12 hours in boston, we are drying out and seeing sunshine we are warming into the low 30' s. the winds will be backing down through the overnight.

today in boston, 30. 32 on the cape. we will stay at 29 in worcester. makes it feel colder. as we kick this storm system out, high-pressure is building in giving us a lot of sunshine. this storm i ensure snarled traffic across the area. for more on that, we turn to mike. mike: the last few days, we heard about the airlines canceling flights. i thought i would check and see what is going on now. let' s see what the flight delays look like across the country. in the northeast, we have no delays. that does not mean everything is running smoothly. it just means all airports are open. the mid-atlantic states have managed to get the airports open. if you are flying out today, make sure you call ahead. even through most of florida, no travel delays this morning. we have picked up enough snow this year to get 10.4 inches.

last year' five inches. we are running even with last year. you don' happened last year. a couple of days later, we got two feet of snow. all the snow down south, we had four of those in a 3.5-week . it does not look like that. the trend is mild. it looks like we will see afternoon rain and breezy. the skies clear and we are back with temperatures in the 30' s. a fairly dry week and plenty of sunshine. doug: thank you. a mile high task ahead of the patriots today on the road to the super bowl. antoinette: and when it comes to this showdown it' s about more , than just the teams. let' s head back out to bob halloran in denver with the quarterback showdown. bob: this is the game before the game both teams are so close to

super bowl. for tom brady, that would put him in position to win his fifth super bowl ring. peyton manning could become the only quarterback to lead two different franchises to a super bowl. they have both been around a long time. look how long in the tooth these guys are. the combined ages of brady and manning in days is 28,603 that makes them the oldest pair of starting quarterbacks in a playoff game by about 900 days, over john elway and dan marino in 1998. s at the end of the road, thinks he can play for another five years or so. tom brady. the storm is over and now the cleanup begins.
