shocking part of the video. you'll see it ahead this half hour. good morning. i'm erika tarantal. emily is off. randy: and i'm randy price with cindy fitzgibbon. a busy weekend for you. cindy: for a lot of us. randy: a lot of people shoveling. cindy: hopefully you're all dug out and ready to go. it's a quiet start to the week. a little chilly. the kids will want to be bundled up at the bus stop this morning. teens and 20's. getting off the bus this afternoon, lots of sunshine. above the freezing mark into the mid 30's we go. you can see we do have teens this morning in a couple of spots. plymouth down to 15. 17 orange, 16 keene. otherwise lots of 20's. low 20's worcester. 27 in boston right now with the mid 20's on the cape. we're still hanging on to cloud cover. these clouds have been coming through during the overnight hours. they're in the process of moving out as high pressure moves on in. so i expect a lot sunshine today. the sun is up just after 7:00 a.m. we're going to see sunshine pretty much all day long. notice by noontime we're right

with a light wind today, no big wind chill to speak of. looking for highs in the mid 30's in boston. that is seasonal for this time of year. worcester 34. we'll get up into the mid and upper 40's in southern massachusetts. today is seasonal. how does 40's sound? that's where we're headed tomorrow morning. let's get you out to the roads right now. you're going to need a lot of windshield washer fluid. jeff: that's the case. we have sky 5 over route 1 traveling on the southbound side moving on in toward the city where at the moment here things are moving fairly well. we've been talking about the heavy volume we're expecting this morning. we're start to go see that around the area. let's go to the maps. you can see the heavier traffic you can expect around there. very slow on 128 from randolph getting to the expressway. the expressway is now almost a 30-minute ride. 26 minutes between braintree to boston. that's the heavy volume we'll experience for the rest of the morning. no matter where you're coming from, you'll deal with that. 15 minutes from 495 to 128.

starts to get missed up as well. the ride on 93 through andover is jammed down to the wilmington area before that clears out. back to you. randy: breaking overnight. seven people are hospitalized after severe turbulence forces a flight to italy to make a an emergency landing. the flight from miami was diverted to newfoundland. three flight attendants and four passengers were taken to a local hospital. at least four ambulances met the american airlines jet on the tarmac overnight. right now a man is getting ready to face a judge, accused of shooting at a local plow driver. erika: the eyeopener's frank holland is live in plymouth with the charges he's facing this morning. frank? frank: this whitman man is accused of firing a gun at that plow driver while he was intoxicated. this incident happened on rocky hill road in plymouth on saturday during the snowstorm. police are charging 60-year-old bruce o'brien with assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a firearm while under the

and disorderly conduct. fortunately, the plow driver was not hurt. police say it does not appear bullets hit any homes or cars in that area either. the shooting is still under investigation. it is not clear what led to this incident. o'brien is expected to be arraigned here in plymouth district court later today. live this morning, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: right now boston police are investigating a deadly accident involving a snow plow. police say a man in his 60's was struck by a plow while shoveling in dorchester yesterday. it happened at the intersection of dorchester ave and harbor view street. the driver did stay at the scene. police are now trying to figure out if speed or the angle of the sun factored into the crash. neighbors say it's a tragic accident, but they're not surprised. >> when i'm crossing the street, cars are coming really close without stopping. i think with the weather though, like the windshields, it's hard to keep them clear anyway. i mean, check the corners. people are all around. randy: the victim's name has not been released.

erika: right now much of the east coast is still trying to recover from that record-setting weekend blizzard. today the federal government will remain closed. that includes all federal offices. congress is also postponing votes this week including one to override president obama's healthcare veto. this morning many rail lines are trying to get back on track. amtrak is running a limited number of trains on its routes in the northeast corridor. and right now airports in new york, philadelphia, and baltimore are getting back up to speed. hundreds of flights are still cancelled. but limited operations did resume yesterday and are expected to increase today. randy: new overnight. the patriots return home after a crushing end to the season. the team arrived at gillette stadium early this morning. and today they will have some final words before disappearing for the off-season. our bob halloran is live in denver, a place that, once again, has not been kind to the pats.

putting it. the patriots are now 0-3 here in denver in the play-offs. this one all started with a surprising missed extra point by steven gostkowski. that's something that the kicker took hard. gostkowski: i just feel terrible. these guys work a lot all days, put their bodies and lives on the line. for us to come out here and lose by a point and me mess up the kick, it's a nightmare. bob: and it didn't go much better for tom brady. number 12 was harassed, hurried, and hassled throwing not one but two interceptions. by the time it was all over, his frustration was crystal clear. brady: it was a tough day, man, tough day. hard-fought football game. bob: in the final seconds, brady did manage to connect with gronk in the endzone. but the two-point conversion failed and the pats were just out of time.

super showdown. there's always next year. live in denver, bob halloran, wcvb, sportscenter 5. randy: bob, thank you. you may have noticed this during the game. microsoft is saying don't blame them for those tablet problems. the tablets on the patriots sidelines stopped working during the first half. coaches were not able to show players real-time photos of what was happening. last night microsoft says the problem was not with its tablets but with the network. the problem was fixed after 20 minutes. erika: it is 6:07 right now. new this morning. today governor baker will unveil new plans to deal with chronic unemployment in massachusetts. it's part of his upcoming budget proposal. last year, the governor created a task force to look at the issue of why some groups are having a tough time getting jobs in the state. the results are also expected to be announced today. commitment 2016. the republican race heads back to new hampshire today. chris christie, john kasich, and front-runner donald trump all

trump ramped up efforts in iowa yesterday ahead of early voting there in just one week. he kicked off events at a church before a rally. a man in a red turban was escorted out of the rally after he interrupted trump as the candidate spoke about terrorism. trump fired back claiming he has muslim support. trump: i have friends that are muslims and they call me up. not all of them. but some of them. they said, "you're doing a great service" because there's tremendous hatred. we have to get to the bottom of what's going on. erika: senators ted cruz and marco rubio also held events in iowa this weekend as they try to chip away at trump's growing poll numbers there. randy: starting today riders will get to sound off on proposed fare hikes on the mbta. the first public hearing will be held tonight in lynn. the cost of riding the "t" is expected to jump as much as 10-percent this coming july. the most expensive scenario could generate more than $49 million for the

tomorrow in brockton. new this morning. there's a new plan to deal with a backlog of complaints against boston police officers. the number of complaints has dropped in recent years. but the time it takes to resolve those issues has been a source of frustration. "the globe" reports the program is designed to bring the officer and the complainant together in less serious cases to address issues faster and more effectively. erika: right now a man is under arrest for this wrong-way crash involving nine cars on a busy street. brockton police were chasing after the stolen s.u.v. right before this wreck. we're told the driver veered into oncoming traffic at the intersection of pleasant street and route 27 yesterday. he ran off but was quickly caught. that suspect and two other people went to the hospital with minor injuries. investigators are trying to figure out what caused this fire that destroyed a historic home in new hampshire. the flames broke out in new castle late saturday night. the home was built in the 19th century. no one was injured.

parts of the southeastern massachusetts on the cape. falmouth had a foot. you can see on the vineyard we had over 13 inches. some places had up to 15. you can see south of boston here from lakeville to plymouth we had 7-10 inches of snow. in boston officially we had ocean-enhanced snow. we picked up right and six inches. lost time. we're up over 10. very similar to where we were last year at this point but of next. we got whacked with those three weeks' time. 20 inches but we have warmer temperatures coming in. although we're seasonal today in the mid 30's we are warming up into 40's tomorrow and wednesday. so there are actually a few rain showers in our forecast later tomorrow. starting out right now though, teens and 20's out the door. plymouth one of the colder spots at 15. 27 boston. 21 in worcester. some teens, orange back to deen. the cape right now still dealing with a few clouds that have been moving through the area overnight. look how quickly these are exiting.

the west. as this moves in, we'll push the last of the clouds out. i see a lot of sunshine in the forecast today. very light winds, under about 10 miles per hour so no big wind chills today. we'll come up into the 0's here by lunchtime and hold there in the afternoon. lots of melting going on. mid to even a few upper 30's just south of boston today. a nice one today. overnight we'll drop back down in the 20. our winds will be turning around to the south overnight. milder air starts to come on up tomorrow morning. a front approaches as we get into the afternoon. by about 5:00 or 6:00 there could be a couple of stray rain showers around. i don't see any widespread rainfall but the threat for a few showers tomorrow with this front in the vicinity, and then we'll push that first front out early on wednesday. the colder air is behind this one. actually we'll manage another day with temperatures above average on wednesday. so mid 40's tomorrow with a few late-day rain showers. clearing on wednesday. lower 40's and then the colder air comes in on thursday. perhaps in time to watch a system developing here yet again

the question is, how close does this track to the coastline as it works its way on to our north and east? we're going to have to watch the track on this one. and not as much cold air around this go-round. if it comes close enough it could bring accumulating snow maybe mixed with rain. lots to watch in the days ahead. for the moment it is on the quiet side. jeff: not quie oat the roads. cindy: everybody is back to work on a monday morning. jeff: the snow is still affecting us today. secondary roads are slippery. the southeast expressway just after the braintree split. traveling nowrnd through braintree very heavy volume coming off route 128 and on route 3 that southbound ride will be a heavy one. northbound on the expressway coming into the city very busy. let's talk about where some of these areas are. first of all, we've been looking at the heavy traffic on 93 that's there again. word of a crash in the middle of that back-up around river road 495 area. we'll have more details as we go along. heavy volume on 93 southbound. there's that slow traffic on the expressway. you're slow on 128 all the way

and then it's almost 30 minutes or 5 minutes from your ride between braintree to boston. metro west still in good shape. no problems on the turnpike at this point. there are minor delays on the red line. longfellow bridge. the rest of the "t" is just fine. back to you. erika: jeff, thank you. right now much of the state's after a major winter storm. cindy, still a lot of shoveling to do on cape cod. cindy: despite much of massachusetts missing the brunt of it, the storm still dumped more than a foot on parts of the cape. in west harwich and east falmouth, the snow jackpots with more than fifteen inches, driveways, cars, trees still caked in snow this morning. the season's first big winter storm, an unwelcome reminder of last winter. >> here we go again. same thing as last year. >> oh, no, another winter. i can't stand it anymore. cindy: many who spoke to newscenter 5 say there is a

let's get you out to the roads. getting very busy out there, jeff. jeff: a couple of crashes to talk about. this one is on the leverett connector on the outbound side of the connector. where you come off storrow drive through leverett circle. now this is not affecting the southbound ride. except for curiosity delays. the leverett connector is filling in as they look over at this scene. shouldn't be a major factor for the commute but it is there. keep in mind there are a couple of other crashes. let's talk about them. first of all we're going to start off on 93. the ride is very slow on the expressway. you're over 30 minutes between braintree to boston. and it's also getting report of a crash. this one in canton on the ramp from 128 to route 59. another crash. this one on 93 southbound right around route 125. that's jammed up traffic through andover and back to the other side of 495. 495 may start to get slow as well because of that. erika, back to you. erika: jeff, thank you. breaking overnight. seven people are hospitalized after severe turbulence forces a flight to italy to make a an emergency landing.

diverted to newfoundland. randy: a whitman man is expected to face a judge today charged with shooting at a plow driver in plymouth. the victim wasn't hit. police say 60-year-old bruce o'brien was drunk when he fired the shots on saturday night. erika: today the federal government will remain closed after this weekend's historic blizzard. congress is also postponing votes this week including one to override president obama's healthcare veto. right now students are preparing to protest what they call racial intolerance at an elite boston school. randy: the eyeopener's kelley tuthill is at boston latin where frustration is turning into solidarity. kelley: they're hoping this protest goes citywide. some students asking others to wear black in a sign of solidarity. they're calling it a "blackout." it all started last week when students at the prestigious school took to social media to accuse administrators of ignoring their frustrations with racial intolerance. they say the school isn't dealing with chronic use of racial slurs, stereotypes, and abusive online taunting.

concerns to the headmaster and nothing was done. school officials say they are looking into the complaints. boston mayor marty walsh says he's disturbed by the allegations and wants to meet with the students. live at boston latin, i'm 5. erika: today the mbta control issues including a new task force to deal with complaints about the ride. they'll also get an update on red line service amid recent delays and breakdowns and potentially take new action to address the stalled and over-budget green line extension project. right now police in methuen want help tracking down a man accused of breaking into a pizza shop. the suspect was caught on surveillance video just before 6:00 a.m. saturday morning inside romano's pizza on merrimack street. police say he broke the front door and stole a safe from inside the building. they say the suspect has a distinctive way of walking, and they hope that will help identify him. randy: this morning the revenge tour is over.

a little bit later this morning. here's a silver lining for you. it's less than a month until pitchers and catchers report to spring training. a former patriots wide receiver is facing drug charges in central florida. the florida highway patrol arrested jabar gaffney along i-75 on friday. he was charged with marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. a picture from a trooper's dashboard camera shows gaffney's arrest. he spent 11 seasons in the nfl before he was cut from the miami dolphins in 2012 for failing to report a previous arrest. erika: it is now 6:36. a boy helps a classmate having an asthma attack and gets suspended. randy: the rule he may have broken. and fugitives call 9-1-1 on themselves. the situation less preferable to them than time behind bars. erika: and ahead in news to go. a building smashed by a car in everett.

we had melting yesterday. of course a refreeze overnight. teens and 20's out there now. we'll get more melting in this afternoon as temperatures come up close to average. in the mid 30's today. mid 40's tomorrow. a few rain showers late in the day. there will be a gusty wind around tomorrow. and another storm threat possibly on friday. we'll take a closer look at that coming up. randy. randy: cindy, thank you. a texas student suspended after helping a friend during an asthma attack. eight grader anthony ruelas watched as another student fell to the floor struggling to breathe. according to an incident report, the teacher told the class to stay seated as she e-mailed the school nurse for help. that's when ruelas picked up the student and rushed her to the nurse. he was then suspended for leaving class. the school says it's looking into exactly what happened. a first for police in california who rescued two fugitives. police pulled the men over for swerving on friday, and the pair took off into the woods. they got soaked while crossing

snowstorms in three-and-a-half weeks. carried us through the middle of february. i don't see that coming in this pattern we're in right now. we have a warm up coming the next couple of days. teens and 20's out the door this morning. 21 worcester. 27 in boston. as chilly as 15 down in plymouth. it is a mostly sunny day with light winds, seasonal temperatures coming up into the mid and upper 30's. it will be a really nice day as the last of the clouds are exiting the cape now. high pressure nosing in for today. off to the west this frontal system a lot of clouds with this. not that much moisture. that's what's coming our way tore tomorrow so tonight we'll actually see those temperatures bottom out in the upper 20's to around freezing. then they'll rise pretty quickly tomorrow morning. look at this. by tomorrow afternoon, mid and a few upper 40's. there will be a gusty wind around tomorrow. new sunshine in the morning fades. clouds thicken up by the end of the day. there might be one or two spot showers around but nothing heavy. just a lot of cloud cover on tuesday with the risk of a spot shower. mid 40's with a gusty breeze. clearing it out on wednesday but still above average. look at the temperatures through midweek in the lower 40's.

with that volume and a couple instance dentsz out there, jeff. jeff: this one in canton on 128 northbound to 95 southbound. these spinouts have been hitting us throughout the morning. very heavy volume so a tough commute. i'll show you exactly where it's located. in canton on ramp from 128 on 295 southbound. it's not a critical location but it's the kind of thick we've been watching for a while. another crash just coming in. this one on the eastbound side of route 2 right at route 128. that's start to go back up traffic toward the lincoln area. westbound backs up around this time of the morning as well. still working this crash on 93 southbound. this one by route 125. slowed well past 495 coming down through the andover stretch. a long run on the expressway. you're over 30 minutes. erika? erika: thank you. breaking overnight. seven people are hospitalized after severe turbulence forces a flight to italy to make a an emergency landing. the flight from miami was diverted to newfoundland. three flight attendants and four passengers were taken to a local hospital. at least four ambulances met the

tarmac overnight. a man accused of shooting at a plow driver will be arraigned randy: the eyeopener's frank the charges he's facing this morning. frank: police say this man was plow driver in the middle of the snowstorm. 60-year-old bruce o'brien of whitman is now charged with assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a firearm while under the influence, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and disorderly conduct. fortunately, that plow driver was not hurt. police say it did not appear any property was damaged either. the incident happened on rocky hill road in plymouth on saturday night. o'brien is expected to be arraigned here in plymouth district court later today. live this morning, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. kelley: students here at boston latin are urging others to wear black today in protest. they're calling it a blackout. it all started last week with students at the prestigious school took to social media

if my math is correct, that is still three more than peyton at this point. there's a silver lining to this whole thing this morning. in less than a month pitchers and catchers report to spring training. live at gillette, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: washington, d.c., is digging out from plenty of snow, but just how much we may never know. the official total at reagan national airport was 17.8 inches but that number falls short to estimates in other areas. "the washington post" reports that's because midway through the blizzard, a team of weather observers lost their snow-measuring device. the team is standing by their total. randy: along the south shore nearly a foot of snow. plymouth and marshfield dealing with some splashover last night after the storm. both communities saw blizzard conditions with winds hitting nearly 75 miles per hour in some spots. erika: boston police are

involving a snow plow. police say a man in his 60's was struck by a plow while shoveling in dorchester yesterday at the intersection of dorchester ave and harbor view street. the driver did stay at the scene. police are now trying to figure out if speed or the angle of the sun factored into the crash. no charges have been filed. randy: a driver is recovering after crashing through a building in everett. this happened around 8:30 last night along revere beach parkway. police say the driver reportedly spun out on vine street and then over-corrected before striking a tax preparation office. nobody was struck, and the driver was not seriously hurt. they were issued a citation. erika: an amesbury man is facing drunk driving charges in new clocked him at 130 miles per hour. officers say 29-year-old kenneth coogan was speeding down route 101 in epping early sunday morning when he hit an island, slammed into a guardrail, and slid down an embankment. coogan was arrested on the scene.

randy: a powerful earthquake leaves damage behind this morning in alaska. relatively little damage. the 7.1 magnitude quake struck early yesterday morning about 160 miles southwest of anchorage. four homes were damaged in an explosion caused by a gas leak resulting from the quake. thirty other homes were evacuated as a precaution. nobody was seriously hurt. erika: olympic venues in rio de janiero will be inspected daily to prevent the spread of the dangerous zika virus. the mosquito-borne virus is responsible for an outbreak in brazil causing birth defects and paralysis. the c.d.c. has advised pregnant women to reconsider travel to brazil and other south american countries. randy: a shake-up at twitter as the social media site attempts to restore its image with investors. four senior executives are now leaving, some of them by choice. the company is also adding a new chief marketing officer and two board members. c.e.o .jack dorsey says twitter must consider "bold rethinking"

company. erika: singer don mclean and his wife have agreed to dismiss a protection order after the "american pie" singer was arrested on a domestic violence charge. court records show his wife had filed for the protection order after mclean's arrest on january 18. but the couple says they're moving forward, and the case is now a private matter. randy: actress kerry washington will be honored this week at harvard university. the "scandal" star was chosen as this year's hasty pudding woman of the year. the nation's oldest theatrical group will honor washington thursday with a parade and a roast. this year's hasty pudding man of the year is joseph gordon levitt. erika: the celtics continue their road trip tonight after a crushing win over the 76ers in philly. jay crowder and isaiah thomas both with 20 points last night. the c's had five players in double-figures and 29 assists on the night. 112-92 the final. the celtics take on the washington wizards at 7:00 tonight. randy: and talk about crushing losses.

northbound to 95 southbound. that's not a big impact on the overall traffic flow. but this one on route 2 eastbound before route 128 is backing traffic up into the lincoln area. and very slow ride on 93 southbound from andover on down toward this crash clearing away around route 125. it's a slow, slow commute on the expressway as well. over 30 minutes. minor delays on the red line because of earlier track work on the longfellow bridge. weather. cindy: sounds like a busy morning on the roads. quiet weatherwise though. skies mainly clear in boston this morning. we are down in the 20's though. but the winds are light. they're going to stay that way all day long. no big wind chills today. teens in orange. keene is just 12 degrees. 17 in plymouth this morning. it is a chilly start. high pressure nosing in. loads of sunshine today. light winds. temperatures by noontime coming up above the freezing mark so we'll get melting in with sunshine all afternoon. seasonal today. a mid and a few upper 30's. we'll be warmest just south of boston. overnight we'll see clouds moving on through.

the temperatures rise later tonight as the winds turn around to the south. a gusty breeze tomorrow but it brings in mild temperatures. coming up well into the 40's tomorrow as this front approaches. increasing clouds. there could be a spot shower or two late in the day but much of the day is dry. then we'll wait for this next front to drop in and bring in cooler air. that won't happen until the end of the week. we're still in the lower 40's on wednesday. 30's on thursday. we're dry. look at this. thursday night on our computer models right there. another area of low pressure coming off the coast. heddling up the coast how close does it come? that is the question. we may get impacted once again by some accumulating snow or rain with this one depending on how close it comes. not a lot of cold air in place. we'll be watching it all week long. behind it things do quiet out and move out of here for the upcoming weekend. randy: and a special day here. after 25 years, the last day on program for jeff larson who is going on to a great new role with the state. you're going to be the highway safety director. jeff: that's right.
