he and two others tried to rob a resident. that man was shot five times. everybody is expected to recover. heather: and a man charged with murdering his estranged wife. neighbors say there never appeared to be any trouble with the couple. prosecutors say moments after killing meede, mcdonald caused a head on crash on 495. >> he was always outside playing with the kids. how can you take a mother away from them? it is horrible. heather: 34-year-old julie meede was beaten and stabbed to death in her norton apartment. he told responding troopers, i just killed my wife. a rhode island woman was hurt in that crash, she was treated at the hospital and released. >> we first told you about a ground breaking decision earlier this week when a local man'

conviction was overturned 30 years after he was first imprisoned. now it' s being called the first of it' s kind in the nation. 5 investigates karen anderson has been following the case and joins us live. karen? >> this case could open the door for others across the country, convicted with this kind of error. next month, he will be released after 30 years in prison. fbi testimony about a hair helped place him at the crime scene, that testimony now found to be invalid. it was based on bad science. a nationwide review finding many cases like this involving microscopic hair analysis, but until now, none of the now the national association of s decision will help other defendants win new trials. the hampden county da says it

weighing whether to appeal and also how to respond to perrot' s request to be free on bail. heather: the wounded warriors project, accused of wasting donations meant for our soldiers. new at 7:00, newscenter 5' s kelley tuthill speaks to two local veterans who have very different feelings about the charity. reporter: in 2014, wounded warrior project raised an astounding $300 million. this is money that helps support veterans nationwide, including jessica soler. the worcester mother of 3 was deployed for 9 months in the gulf during operation iraqi freedom. >> when you separate from the military, you feel kind of lost. and organizations like wwp give us that back. reporter: wounded warrior also helps fund the home base program a red sox and mass general , intiative to treat the invisible wounds of war.

criticism again after former , employees allege the charity spends lavishly on staff parties and travel. $26 million on conferences and meetings in 2014 alone. >> i think that at a bare minimum for a charity like this we could expect they could put , their resources toward veterans, not toward themselves. reporter: congressman seth moulton, an iraq war veteran, calls the ceo of wounded warrior out of touch. tax filings show steven nardizzi earned nearly $475,000 in 2014. charity watch gives wounded warrior a c rating for spending only 60% of its budget on veterans 30% on fundraising . >> i know i stopped donating to the wounded warrior project several years ago when i started hearing rumors about this. reporter: bill topham, a marine corp vet, also refuses to support wounded warrior. >> people really do want to help, but look out who you give to. they need to know who they are giving to and they need to know their finances and you can look

heather: wounded warrior gave a statement saying that they serve veterans and families and they consider themselves a leader in nonprofit transparency. ed: congressman stephen lynch just returning home from a trip to middle east. he was there to check out the refugee vetting process. these are the pictures from lynch' s visit to four countries, lebanon, jordan, turkey and hungary. criticism of the screening process there has grown since the recent attacks in paris and turkey. lynch says he was skeptical at first, but now he is confident in the refugee vetting process along the borders of these countries. >> i thought, there is no way they could do this in a thorough way, but i have to say, i was impressed with the robust system may have at the border. they are using retina scan, fingerprints, it is a long process. edward: he says the vetting process can take more than 2 years, but adding another layer of vetting by the director of
