8:00 am
>> now on newscenter 5's "eyeopener." antoinette: dangerous gang members taken off the streets. dozens under arrest. how a major f.b.i. sweep could make a life-saving difference in local communities. doug: a driver trapped by live wires in roslindale for hours. the risky mission to set him free. danielle: a mild weekend on tap. the warm-up ahead and the mid-week changes. antoinette: and a belmont mother setting an incredible record. what she did in just seven days could really have jaws dropping. >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." antoinette: good morning to you. we have another hour of the "eyeopener" getting started right now at 8:00. i'm antoinette antonio.
8:01 am
it's saturday, january 30. although if you look at what's coming, it's like march 30, danielle. danielle: doug, antoinette, the warm air is here. the warm-up is coming this weekend. we've talked about it all week. and get ready for warm temperatures. right now we're in the 30's in boston. the south shore, even on the cape and the islands checking in at 32 degrees. on the vineyard. as we go through the next 12 hours there, we're going to see temperatures warm up into the upper 30's to low 40's. we'll see some sunshine this morning but more clouds working their way in as we head through the afternoon. the other part i want to talk about is worcester. we'll see the mid to upper 30's there. of course, some more clouds working their way in. now today is good. we're at 40 degrees. we're running above average. but as we head toward sunday take a look. we're up to 50 degrees and we're mild. we're going to take that. high pressure really dominates our weather. we are watching two systems.
8:02 am
one up to the west. they're going to bring us a chance for rain. we'll talk about when ahead. antoinette. antoinette: thank you, danielle. right now, dozens of suspected gang members who target vulnerable teens locked behind bars. federal agents and police unleashing a sweeping crackdown on the ms-13 gang. doug: the gang is known to use violent recruitment methods on young kids. the eye's frank holland with the arrests and some relief for neighborhoods terrorized by the gang. frank: ms-13 is a notorious international street gang, and its membership has been growing. investigators say gang members recruited students as young as 14 years old from area high schools in chelsea, everett, and east boston. police say gang violence took the life of wilson martinez. the 15-year-old was stabbed last year, the day before school started. with at least 5 murders tied to ms-13, the arrests bring some relief but not a rescue from the violence so many in those areas fear. >> probably fewer chances for recruiting but a little bit
8:03 am
but danger is always out there. frank: investigators say the gang is ruthless. its motto -- kill, rape, and control. the f.b.i. laid out charges against 56 alleged ms-13 members. the charges include murder, drug trafficking, gun violations, and immigration offenses. doug: frank, thank you. big trouble on a side street in roslindale. live power lines trapping a cement truck driver for hours. all that electric current making it too dangerous for him to get out. newscenter 5's juli mcdonald with the rescue caught on camera. juli: a loud boom followed by darkness. roslindale neighbors had no idea what was going on friday evening when they suddenly lost power. neighbor: i just looked out the window and saw the police cars going by. then i heard the fire engines coming. that's when i came out to see if my neighbors were okay. juli: when they came outside, this is what they saw. a concrete truck tangled in power lines. driver joe smith said he was pulling away from a job in this robken/hazelmere neighborhood
8:04 am
telephone pole to his left. driver: the window was halfway down. the sparks flew in. i hit the brakes and ducked. everything in this truck is metal. i just stayed exactly where i am. juli: forced to sit tight until eversource arrived to turn off the power. newscenter 5 watched crews carefully treat the wires before they began to pull them away from the truck. another eversource truck eventually arrived with a new pole, but neighbors knew it would be a while until their lights came back on. neighbor: one of the officers said it would be at least overnight. juli: smith said he's trained to always be on the lookout for low wires, but it is hard to see them in the dark. driver: when you're on a street they're not supposed to be that low, so you don't expect that to happen. juli: smith said the height of his truck is 13 feet, and wires are supposed to be 15 feet high. another issue that made this even more complicated is that there was still wet concrete in the back of that truck so even once the wires came down and were tangled around it, that drum kept rolling the whole time.
8:05 am
wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: the investigation kill a carjacking suspect in police say 33-year-old randolph mcclain carjacked a woman at gunpoint. he was trying to get away from police, who had just shown up with a warrant for his arrest. he was wanted for making threats with a gun against his ex-girlfriend and her family. witnesses describe hearing multiple shots after mcclain pointed his gun at police. >> i heard like six more shots that sounded like at first it sounded like somebody was shooting. then retaliated. antoinette: mcclain vowed he wouldn't be caught; and when police showed up at his home, he said he had a gun and would kill them. doug: we're hearing from the customers who helped a store clerk in brookline fight off an armed robber. it happened at the 7-11 on comm ave in the heart of the b.u. campus yesterday morning. police say the suspect got into an argument with the clerk, then attacked him with a box cutter. that's when the customers jumped
8:06 am

8:09 am
scams. the eyeopener's frank holland is back with the advice from experts on how to avoid becoming a victim. frank: investigators say scammers posing as i.r.s. agents are working the phones calling thousands of people across the country. the new hampshire a.g.'s office has received more than 50 complaints just this week. the scammers demand payment for past due taxes, asking for debit and credit card numbers and even threaten if the person doesn't comply, they could be arrested. officials say if someone claiming to be from the i.r.s. calls and threatens you, don't engage; just hang up. >> the i.r.s. doesn't call you threatening to arrest you and force you to make payments that way. it just doesn't happen. frank: experts say never give out personal information over the phone, in an email, or through the internet. if you think you were contacted by a scam artist, contact your local police department or the attorney general's office. >> now your storm team 5

government-- a bipartisan love-fest-- illustrated by the state of the city and state of the commonwealth addresses, and a polarized and awkward state of the union. is it any wonder americans question the effectiveness of federal government while local optimism abounds? major blue chip companies like general electric have picked up on the palpable bay state enthusiasm. mayor marty walsh and governor charlie baker enumerated their accomplishments, and cooperation crystalized by baker's account that he couldn't see an "inch of daylight" between boston's democratic mayor and massachusetts republican governor. to tackle our long remaining to-do list, they'll need to nurture their relationship and perhaps bring the legislature along on their dates. in particular, the governor laid out a lengthy agenda aggressively fighting the opioid epidemic; reforming department of children and familes, the health connector and the "t"; taking a lead on clean energy generation; and lifting the cap on charter schools. missing perhaps were more candid reflections on other pressing concerns. neither leader sufficiently
