yes, the last day of january. feeling like perhaps the last day of march, danielle. danielle: that's right. or the beginning of even april. temperatures are going to be warming up to near 50 degrees if not above in some spots today. you can see why on the map. already in the mid 40's on nantucket. the lower 40's on the cape and the south shore. even 39 degrees this morning in boston and 35 in worcester. in fact, most areas starting out above the freezing mark. now we do have some wind out of the south and west. you're going to feel it today yet again. anywhere from about 10-15 miles an hour sustained. creating a bit of a wind chill this morning. later today, it's going to warm us up into the upper 40's and low 50's. notice though we are going to have a mix of sun and clouds as we go through the day with more clouds at least this morning. a little more sunshine, i think, this afternoon. so 50 degrees in boston. 50 in marshfield, taunton. 47 on the cape. and 48 degrees on nantucket. you can see the clouds here right now.

system which is out to the west. we'll talk about when we can expect much-needed rain ahead. antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. right now, three children are in state custody after being found in filthy conditions in this worcester home. drug charges brought against two women who lived there. the children ages 6, 5, and 3. doug: the eyeopener's frank holland is here with the deplorable conditions inside the home and reaction from family members. frank? frank: doug and antoinette, worcester police used some disturbing details to describe this home. police were there executing a search warrant friday night after they pulled over sheyla montalvo and her girlfriend, natasha riley-murphy. they say the home on king street was infested with mice, animal feces, and garbage. police also discovered oxycodone pills, $3,400 cash, marijuana, and hundreds of cut-corner baggies. the two women were arrested on drug charges. montalvo's mother, gladys santana, was inconsolable as she

grandchildren lived. she admits she hadn't been upstairs in a long time. >> i want to see if i can pick up my grandchildren's clothes to see if i can wash them to see if d.c.f. gives me an opportunity to have them in my life instead of placing them somewhere. frank: the three- and six-year-olds taken from the home were montalvo's children; the other child was a cousin who was just visiting. montalvo and riley-murphy will be arraigned tomorrow at worcester district court. antoinette: ? antoinette: frank, thank you. to commitment 2016 and the final push in iowa this weekend for presidential candidates. the state holds its critical caucuses tomorrow. last night, the focus was on those crucial undecided voters. our phil lipof is in des moines with a front-row seat to it all. phil: from new hampshire back to iowa, donald trump flying in on his private jet looking to fire up his supporters. trump:'s not crunch time. this is it. this is what it's all about so we have to get out there and

"the des moines register"/ bloomberg politics poll finding the democratic race is in a statistical dead heat with clinton three points ahead of bernie sanders at 45 percent. on the republican side, donald trump is five points ahead of ted cruz with 28 percent. marco rubio is trailing in third, 15 points behind trump. newscenter 5's phil lipof is following the candidates every step of the way through the caucuses. look for his reports tonight,

tuesday morning. doug: right now denver police trying to figure out what sparked a chaotic scene at a motorcycle expo. one person was shot and killed, several others injured during the melee. witnesses say a brawl started on a stairwell and quickly spun out of control. gunfire forcing hundreds to hide under tables. police say multiple people were also stabbed. three of the injured are in critical condition. at least one person was taken away in handcufs though police say they have not made any arrests. >> you're a rider. you're aware of what goes on here. if you start seeing looks between club members, it's time to go. doug: all of today's expo events have been cancelled. two teens are under arrest right now for the murder of an everett man. the middlesex county d.a. says jose ardon and christian nunez-flores, both 17, were arrested in malden yesterday. they are accused in the shooting death of 19-year-old omar reyes whose body was found on january 3 under the tileston street bridge.

arraignment tomorrow. antoinette: in wrentham, nuns helped rescue a 74-year-old man after a tree fell on him. this happened yesterday afternoon. firefighters telling newscenter 5 the victim was trapped for hours. nuns at mount saint mary's abbey heard him screaming for help and called 9-1-1. firefighters say the victim suffered serious injuries to his legs and was flown to boston medical center. we're told he is also getting treatment for hypothermia. no word yet on what caused a minor derailment on the mbta's green line yesterday. service between reservoir and beaconsfield was affected. seven passengers were onboard at the time. nobody was injured. regular service is back up and running this morning. doug: new this morning two juveniles are under arrest in peabody. police say they pulled a bb gun on another boy and stole his cell phone yesterday afternoon outside the welch elementary school. both suspects will be in juvenile court tomorrow, charged with armed robbery and assault

police say another similar incident is also under investigation right now. a 17-year-old is behind bars in vermont right now charged with an armed robbery in new hampshire. state police say the teen robbed the common man store at the hooksett rest stop at gunpoint just after midnight yesterday. he allegedly showed a handgun, demanded cash, then ran away. he was later arrested after a 30-mile chase down i-91 in vermont. state police say he lost control and crashed a stolen van. about a scam that's been reported in several local communities. alleged chimney sweeps telling home owners they are required to get their fireplaces cleaned. our sera congi explains what's going on. sera: police are warning about a potential scam involving chimney sweepers. one incident took place here on garden street in sharon. luckily, a neighbor stepped in. chimney cleaning with some dirty tactics. sharon police say an elderly resident in the neighborhood

approached by two men in a white van with chimney sweep markings. it's the same kind of activity being reported in other communities as well. deputy chief: they're claiming the fire department is requiring the resident to get their chimney cleaned. sera: in the sharon incident, a good neighbor stepped in and the two men left. residents have reported getting phone calls, and police warn that any claims tied to fire departments are not true. deputy chief: across the board, no fire department would engage in any kind of agreement with a private company or require anyone to have their chimney cleaned. sera: warnings are now going out in several communities to be on the lookout and vet any potential home service. deputy chief: check them out. see who they've done work for. have them leave brochures. have them leave information. if they really are legitimate, they'll come back another day. sera: sharon police are investigating the incident that happened here on garden street. they're hoping anyone with information will come forward. in sharon, sera congi, wcvb,

antoinette: 5:13. welcome back to the "eyeopener." demolition day in san francisco. this dream home sold just a few months ago torn down. that's because it was threatening the neighborhood. doug: newscenter 5's frank holland is back to explain the danger. frank, what have you got. frank: a very emotional story here. this is really a story about one man's dream being destroyed. ronald martell hadn't even moved into his san francisco home when he discovered the entire house

neighborhood below. his only choice-- tear it down. it's not just this home that was precarious position. five others are also on a slippery slope. and now those homeowners are worried they could be next. >> you wake up one morning, and the comment is you may have to lose your home. that's pretty scary. frank: demolition is almost done, but what triggered the slide that stole martell's dream home remains a mystery. for now, no other homes are but homeowners nearby are required to have an engineering firm prove their house is not at risk. if they can't, their home could face the wrecking ball as well. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meteorologist danielle vollmar. antoinette: i just looked up right now and realize it's 40 degrees outside. wow! it's pretty warm. danielle: i mean yesterday we were at 43 in boston for our high. today we're going for 50 degrees. doug: break out the golf clubs. danielle: i feel like people

antoinette: there are some people who will. danielle: as we round out the month of january, we are on tap to be the warmest december and january on record. in fact, we're tied with it right now. today we're going to be above average so i think we're actually going to go above that. so we should warm up to the number-one spot. anyway, in terms of the temperatures, they are on the way up. as we go through the week. in fact, tomorrow look at this. the mid to upper 50's. now we're not going to break any records tomorrow because the records are in the 60's. but we're going to gelt pretty close. tuesday we drop back into the 40's. still running about 10 degrees above average though. and then wednesday we're back up into the mid 50's. so it is a warm start to the workweek. don't worry though. if you like it cold, it's a cold finish. 41 on the vineyard. it is 35 in concord. this morning keene checking in at 32 degrees. and 32 degrees in pittsfield. as we go through the next 12 hours in time you're going to feel those winds out of the south and west today.

and notice the other thing here. there is going to be a lot of clouds out there today. but we will see some breaks of sunshine. already saturate with the clouds this morning. a couple of showers here developing off the ocean waters. but really not impacting our area. they're associated with this frontal boundary that is lift to go the north of us. we are in between high pressure and another area of low pressure. this one here is going to come through tomorrow and may trigger a shower or two in the afternoon. the other thing it's going to do is, of course, bring in that really, really warm air for tomorrow. for today, mid 40's in worcester. 50 degrees in boston. 50 on the south shore. upper 40's on the cape. it will be a mix of sun and clouds. tonight we only drop into the upper 30's, low 40's. it's a mild night on tap. could be some patchy areas of fog overnight, i think, into first thing tomorrow. and then tomorrow through the day with a very strong southwest wind which eventually turns to the northwest by the end of the day, but it takes a while.

the mid to upper 50's in most locations. with that, it's a warm front that is coming on through. bringing in the mild air but notice by monday morning, we're still dry but in the afternoon, there could be one or two showers. and then behind this, cooler air is going to move in. then we watch our next system here. this one is pretty big. it has a lot of moisture with it as it grabs some of that gulf of mexico moisture. we're going to see rain from this. we're on the warmer side of this which is good news but we could see anywhere from a half an inch to an inch in terms of rain totals. in fact, let me break that down for you on wednesday. as you look, we'll go through this. anywhere from a half an inch to pretty much an inch of rain will fall. there could be some embedded thunderstorms with this one. timing looks like mid morning into late afternoon, early evening. and of course flooding can't be ruled out. then as we look ahead towards the end of the week, we are watching this potential ocean storm on friday. right now latest models starting to track it more out to sea. so if anything, what it would

but the precipitation type is still in question because obviously it could be, you know, mixed precipitation or even just plain old rain, maybe even some snow showers depending on how close it gets. we may not see anything at all except for clouds from this one as it continues to track farther out to sea. of course, we're going to keep the latest with all those models as we watch them through the workweek. anyway you look at it though, by the end of the week we're back to feeling more like winter so enjoy this weekend into the beginning of the week. antoinette and doug. antoinette: we certainly will, danielle, thank you. it is 5:18. here's a check of other stories we're following right now. mosquito-borne zika virus is currently being developed research is also moving forward on other ways to defeat the virus. genetically engineered mosquitos could become the newest weapon to help reduce mosquito populations. danielle: welcome back. i'm meteorologist danielle vollmar. well, we are dry today. we're looking for a mix of sun and clouds. one thing that is happening this week is there's going to be some chances for rain because temperatures will be so warm. now on monday it's really hit-or-miss spot afternoon showers. wednesday looks like a period of heavy, steady rain with some embedded thunderstorms from our next system. the other thing that's happening this week, temperature s are on the way up monday mid to upper 50's. mid to upper 50's also on wednesday. now monday we're not going to break any records but we're going to be pretty close. 66 is the record in boston. 61 in worcester. we will be in the mid 50's i think in most locations. the reason why, we have this warm front lifting through the region on monday. it turns us mild. there's that cold front that triggers a couple of showers. we turn cooler on tuesday and

program. while he loves acting, teaching is what he really wants to do. inspired by people like english teacher julie alexander. teacher: pay attention. take notes. antoinette: but she finds even more inspiration in skyler, remembering the first day she met him. teacher: he got up, shook my hand, and said, "hi, are you mrs. alexander? i'm skyler. this is going to be a great school." i said, "we can be a little rough around the edges, but we're good people." antoinette: a student wise beyond his years. skyler: everything i've been through has made me what i am. there's nothing that will change that. if i hadn't gone through all the adversity that i faced, i wouldn't be the skyler that i am today. antoinette: that's why skyler robinson deserves this a-plus. skyler is now waiting to hear back from harvard, b.u., northeastern, columbia, n.y.u., and ucla-- harvard being his number one choice. and he wants to be a teacher. know an exceptional student

back and forth about whether the two should debate each other again next week ahead of the new hampshire primary along with possibly adding three more debates through the spring. hillary clinton's canvassers are weekend with the new hampshire primary just nine days away. among them, boston mayor marty walsh. yesterday, he made a stop at the montessori school in manchester telling the crowd that clinton will work to improve the lives of middle-class families. mayor: hillary is the most qualified person running for the seat. this is also is a primary. the primary gets you ready for the final. if you're a strong democrat you want to vote for somebody you can believe in and somebody who can win. hillary clinton can win the final. antoinette: several grassroots

for today as well. doug: while most of the candidates are out in iowa today, ahead of tomorrow's caucuses republican john kasick is continuing to rally voters in new hampshire. the ohio governor says he's a candidate who can bring people together amid the increasingly nasty battle among his rivals. the latest new hampshire poll numbers show kasich in a tie for second place with senator ted cruz. kasich insists a strong finish in the granite state will bring new national interest to his candidacy. >> when you get something out of an endorsement here in this great state and then you get something like the times and the globe, it just shows that you have an ability to reach out and win a general election so you can begin to bring about the conservative principles i've always governed under. doug: kasich is in salem this afternoon for a town hall before heading to bow for his 86th town hall event in new hampshire. antoinette: violent and dangerous prisoners on the run in california are back behind bars right now. the two men broke out of jail more than a week ago. newscenter 5's pam cross tells us how they were finally caught. pam: the remaining two

the area right now. we're going to keep the clouds in the forecast pretty much all day long. it will be a mix of sun and clouds. 39 in boston. winds are out of the south-southwest at about 13. that's creating a bit of a wind chill making it feel more like 31 degrees. as we go through the next 12 hours, this wind sticks with us. so yesterday was breezy. today it will also be breezy but those winds out of the south and west at 10-15 miles an hour. warming things up to 50 in boston, 50 in marshfield. 51 in taunton. you see a group of 50's there and even the upper 40's through the merrimack valley. so it's a warm one on tap. for tonight, we're only going to drop back into the 30's and 40's it's mild. there could be some low-level clouds developing, maybe some patchy areas of fog to start the day tomorrow. and the rain showers don't come in until, i think, after lunger time really into the early evening. the ride home from work could be wet in some locations but not everyone is going to see them. and as far as the temperatures go though, we're talking 56 in

55 on the south shore and 57 in lawrence. so it is warm out there. as this warm front lifts through the area. now this cold front is what triggers the showers and then behind it, we're going to turn slightly cooler as we head towards tuesday. so let's talk more about that rain for tomorrow. i do want to time it out for you. so as we head towards tonight, what is going to happen is we're going to see those rain showers or those clouds come in first thing tomorrow morning. really they hold off until about 8:00 or so. then watch what happens on the future cast. by about 4:00, it is starting to shower. it's mainly south and east of boston it looks like the best bet for those showers. then we clear out quickly on monday night into tuesday. now wednesday, there's going to be that chance for the rain and how much rain are we talking about? when all is said and done, anywhere from about a half an inch to an inch of rain. some embedded thunderstorms look likely and breezy conditions on wednesday. in fact, it could reach wind advisory criteria in some

officials found a video from a helmet camera showing the jump last weekend. that is when a woman was found dead after base jumping off the bixby bridge in big sur. they believe the male jumper had been wearing the helmet before he jumped in. doug: more than 100 firefighters in lexington, kentucky, had their hands full yesterday battling a massive blaze at the blue grass stockyard. the fire destroyed the 70-year-old beef cattle auction business. fire officials had to warn anyone living within a half mile of the area to stay inside and turn off their heating and air conditioning units to keep the smoke out of their homes. no one was injured, but 20 cows did not survive. anti-refugee protests were held in sweden's capital yesterday the scene just a day after several masked men were arrested for threatening foreigners. sweden, one of the top destinations for asylum-seekers in europe, received a record 160,000 arrivals last year. the country has experienced a sharp drop in newcomers since

antoinette: nhl all-star weekend in nashville. music city is "hockey town" for is the only member of the bruins it's his second time as an all-star, second time participating in the shooting accuracy competition. bergeron did not do especially well, but he's earned a lot of respect around the league. he'll represent the bruins in today's game. warmer weather has been stubbornly sticking around this winter, and that's affecting some seasonal events in new hampshire. the annual black ice pond hockey tournament is underway this weekend at white park in concord but with some different equipment. players have traded their in their skates for boots because of poor conditions. organizers say the warm weather and bright sun is taking it's toll on the ice, so they have to make adjustments. >> we're giving them the option of playing with five or six players out there, a little more than what they would do in a pond hockey tournament.

st. pierre manufacturing is the last of its kind in the country. peter: we're really the only ones left in the united states that make horseshoes anymore. doug: when it comes to being made in mass, these pitching shoes are being produced old school. these are some serious manufacturing machines. peter: absolutely. this is heavy-duty stuff. doug: two 1,000-ton presses and one 1,200-ton press are the backbone of the operation. the shoes actually starting out as 20-foot long steel rods that are then cut down to two-foot lengths, super heated to 2300 degrees, and then pressed into those familiar horseshoe shapes. it's loud in here. peter: it's a pretty loud facility. doug: after the shoes are cooled, cleaned, and power coated, they're ready to be shipped all over the world. what does it mean to see your family name and worcester next to it? what does that mean? peter: you know, it's a great source of pride. doug: quite the legacy started by a man who started the company because he was simply tired of having his tires get stuck in
