the cold spot out in orange at 29 degrees. it is 30 in keene. most of us are at or above 40 degrees this morning. you can see there are some clouds out there. these are thin clouds around this morning. but patchy clouds here and there. you can see off to the west there are some showers. these are associated with a cold front that is moving toward us. out ahead that front today a southwesterly wind feeding off even warmer temperatures. from the 40's this morning we're going to jump up into the 50's this afternoon. in fact by 10:00 this morning, notice partly sunny skies. around 50 degrees with mid and even some upper 50's this afternoon. that southwesterly wind about 10-15 miles per hour. a few spots south of town, look at that. around taunton could actually touch 60 degrees today so it is warm, yes, and just the chance as we get toward really this evening of a couple of showers especially over southeastern massachusetts. but heavy rain in the forecast later this week. more on that just ahead. let's get you out to the roads. we say good morning to kevin brennan in for olessa stepanova this morning. kevin: thank you very much.

this election. caucuses aren't like primaries. iowa voters must attend public meetings in their communities to cast their votes. democrats have to cast their vote in public. republicans use a "secret ballot"-- either a printed sheet or a scrap of paper. the caucuses get underway at 7:00 p.m. local time or 8:00 p.m. our time. campaign volunteers come from all over the country for the final push. ann sheahn came from chicago. >> this is my first time. i'm really excited to be here. i'm very energized. i feel like there's great energy here. i'm happy to be with the campaign. erika: polls show a tight race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders going into tonight's caucuses. donald trump is still out in front on the republican side. but polls don't mean much today. all that matters is counting those votes. emily: thank you, erika. our phil lipof will be in iowa as the votes are tallied. look for his live reports tonight starting at 4:30, after the votes come in at 11:00 p.m.,

eyeopener. republican john kasich putting everything on a strong showing in new hampshire. he was the only candidate there yesterday while everyone else campaigned in iowa. the ohio governor will hold events in the granite state again today. randy: breaking overnight. a woman is seriously hurt after being struck by a car in boston. this was the scene around 1:40 this morning on mass ave. at boston street. boston e.m.s. transported the woman to boston medical center. court today, facing several living conditions in worcester. prosecutors say sheyla montalvo and natasha riley-murphy lived in the squalid home on king street with their children, ages 6, 5, and 3. police say the home is infested with mice, animal feces, and garbage. the women were also arrested on multiple drug charges. randy: world health leaders are preparing to hold an emergency meeting to search for ways to stop the spread of the zika virus. the mosquito-born illness is

and central america. least 30 people infected in more than 11 states. all of them got the virus outside the country. emily: right now a young child is in the hospital, and boston police are trying to figure out what happened. all of this unfolding on alpine street in the city's roxbury neighborhood. the eyeopener's kelley tuthill is there with what we know at this hour. kelley: emily, a police officer remains at the scene and crime scene-- tape still up at the home as police investigate what happened here last night. now all we know at this point is a three-year-old child from roxbury was hospitalized, taken to boston medical center around 9:40 last night after police got a call reporting a trauma victim here on alpine street. we don't have at this point any details on what may have happened to this three-year-old, but again police are investigating. we're also still waiting to find out how that child is doing.

kelley tuthill, wcvb, newscenter randy: right now a weymouth firefighter is under investigation-- all over a facebook post about drug addicts. the eye's frank holland is live in weymouth, with the action city leaders are taking today. frank: weymouth's mayor, fire chief, and other officials will hold a meeting after that facebook post went viral. the post allegedly made on a firefighter's personal facebook account. it calls the overdose-reversing drug narcan "the worst drug ever created." the post suggests letting overdose victims die. after reading that post, people flooded the fire department's official facebook page, some calling the comments disgraceful. we talked to one man who drove straight to the fire department. it's very emotional for him. he lost his son, a veteran, to an overdose in may. >> i was angry. i wasn't going there to start a fight or anything. i know most firemen are great

that guy though, you know, i wanted to bring a picture of my son in when he was in his uniform not that long ago. frank: weymouth's mayor saying, "our first responders take their jobs very seriously. we have a mission to protect and save lives. the post sends a different message than that." it's not confirmed that the firefighter actually posted the message. we reached out to the firefighter and his union. we have not received a response. that firefighter is still on the job. live in weymouth, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: frank, thank you. 4:37. in the right place at the right time. emily: the unexpected rescue for a wrentham man trapped in the woods. the taxi industry fighting back against rideshare services. the agency's new plan to stay in business. and how it makes your commute a little easier. cindy: how do 50's sound again today? that's where we're headed.

okay. he was out chopping wood when something went wrong, and he got trapped for two hours under a tree. a group of nuns from st. mary's, who some say rarely go into the woods, happened to be out saturday and heard goldman's cries. >> i think they have a day of recollection. i think that's-- usually the sisters take a walk in the woods. that was great. they saved this guy's life probably. >> good to see them in the news. we nuns don't get much publicity. emily: newscenter 5 reached out to the 74-year-old who says he's doing okay. his wife expects him to be up and walking in the next couple of days. a historic moment in israel. randy: the barrier broken down for the jewish community. new hope for a retiring k9 officer. the nationwide rally to keep the

randy: snow removal equipment and the operators are returning to the boston area now after helping dig out the nation's capital. washington, d.c., needed help clearing more than 20 inches of snow that fell last week. the massachusetts convoy consisted of over 50 contractors

and bobcats. emily: this time last year though, remember this? we were the ones who needed the help. this is the aftermath in lowell of a storm that hit on february 1, 2015. it was the second major storm to hit massachusetts last winter adding to the two feet most places already had. i feel like that has just been pushed from my memory. cindy: it's right there. emily: i am so living in the moment here this winter. cindy: winter? can you call it that? it's been such a complete reversal from last winter so far. we're watching a storm out west. you can see it around the denver area. that will pull to our west for the midweek. we're going to be on the warm side of it. for us, that will be another rainstorm. there you go. you can see that second storm that we're just referring to. that is is the ground hog day storm. that brought a foot-and-a-half of snow to the boston area. there were two more shortly after culminating with the valentine's day storm. all about a year ago. quite a difference. we had warm temperatures

got to 57 degrees in boston for the last day of january. when you look at december and january together, the warmest two-month combination on record for the boston area. there you see the average temperature just kind of topping the charts. so it's been pretty incredible. we may close to some record high temperatures today. the record in boston is 66. i'm forecasting upper 50's. notice in worcester forecasting the lower 50's. the record for you is the lower 60's. it will be warm. no doubt about it. we're starting out in the 40's. average high this time of year is 36. we are sitting about ten degrees above that this morning in boston. there is a cold pocket toward orange and keene where we are a little bit below the freezing mark. a southwesterly breeds is kicking up this morning. coupled with a blanket of clouds through the overnight hours. as the sun comes up before 7:00 this morning, the first time that's happened in a while, we're going to see muted sunshine for a time this morning. off to the west though there is a cold front. notice there's a little ribbon

front: may run out of gas before they reach us. the temperatures ahead of the front 50's in pittsburgh this morning. 55 in charleston, west virginia. on the other side of the front it is cooler. that air will start to preyed in spore tomorrow. we'll call it partly sunny today. temperatures shooting up into the 50's. may hit 60's in taunton. upper 50's in marshfield. there. look at boston 58. 58 up in lawrence as well. very warm today. you can see through about mid afternoon we're kind of in and out of cloud cover today. as that front approaches there's not a lot of moisture with it. until we get to this evening. it may be able to tap into some of that moisture off the ocean. the best chance of a shower is in southeastern massachusetts between about 6:00 and 8:00 this evening. then that will shift off shore. skies clear out overnight. it will be a little colder out the door tomorrow morning. 20's to around the freezing mark so feeling a little bit more like february tomorrow morning. tomorrow is a quiet day for ground hog day with high pressure in control. here comes that system out of

west. so we are going to be on the warmer side. there will be some heavier rain getting on in here. so quiet tomorrow. back down into the 40's. wind and rain in the forecast as we head into wednesday. here. you can see how that storm approaches. it looks as though the rain comes in mostly after the morning commute. i think it's heaviest in the hours. it's shifting off shore. this system will be loaded with moisture as we clear it out on out on thursday. you can see some of the rain totals here. up over an inch especially out in the worcester hills on westward so the potential for heavier rain as we work through wednesday. week. there will be a storm off shore friday. right now it looks like it's a little too far out to sea to have any impact here. we'll watch it. we're trending from 50's back down to the 30's by the weekend which is average for this time of year. kevin: enjoy that 50. cindy: spring fever. kevin: looking pretty good in the weather department and on the roads here. not too bad. downtown over the zakim bridge.

from somerville getting down into the o'neill tunnel and northbound as well getting up into somerville. you're looking good the rest of downtown. let's take a look at the maps. we are still picking up work crews inside the sumner tunnel. if you're leaving the airport and heading into boston. work crews being picked up both directions on the mass pike between route 93 and the allston/brighton tolls. farther west though, you're looking pretty good from framingham all the way into the city if that's your destination this morning. up to the north routes 3, 93, 95, a nice ride out of new hampshire. 9 take you a little over 20 minutes to get from 495 in andover right down to the lower deck. south of town much of the same. routes 3, 24, 95 okay getting up to 93. the expressway here wide open. take you about 11 minutes braintree up to the o'neill tunnel. if you're taking the trains all lines are starting the morning on time. emily. new this morning. the mbta is dealing with a slew of problems with its new "the globe" reports two of the trains had such problems with frozen engines and overheating that they had to be sent back to

tests. the 40 new locomotives started running in 2014 at a cost of about $222 million. the mbta is now working with manufacturers to fix at least nine defects. but the "t" says the new engines are more reliable and have decreased delays. randy: a new app is launching in boston. and that could mean good things for the taxi industry. the app "curb" makes its debut in the city next week. it links smartphone users to a network of about 600 taxis in the boston area. but the taxi industry says the app is still not enough to compete with rideshare services like uber and lyft. a big win for engineering students at m.i.t. they won the right to build a hyperloop, a high-speed transportation device. the initial concept came from the co-founder of space-x and tesla motors. more than 100 universities

the transport pods will be tested on a special track in california. the hyperloop is a pod that can transport 20 to 30 people at roughly 700 mile per hour. emily: your economy headlines now. mixed markets in asia today. chinese stocks fell while japan reported gains, following the country's introduction of a negative interest rate policy. u.s. stocks saw their biggest gains in about five months on friday. the dow rose 396 points to close at 16,466. right now, stock futures are down. general motors is kicking into gear to get self-driving cars onto the road. the company has created a team with this specific goal. that team starts work today. other companies, including google, are also working to get autonomous cars on the road. randy: 4:51. your trending stories this morning. a historic move at one of judaism's most holy sites. the western wall will soon have a prayer space for mixed-gender

emily: it is 4:55. following breaking news overnight out of boston. randy: first responders say a woman is seriously hurt after being struck by a car in the city. this happened on massachusetts avenue on boston street about 1:40 this morning. the woman was taken to boston medical center.

this hour. emily: boston police are investigating after a three-year-old was rushed to the hospital. the toddler suffering from trauma last night at a home on alpine street in roxbury. it's unclear what caused the injuries. the three-year-old was taken to boston medical center. two people are expected in court today charged in a january 3 murder in everett. jose ardon and cristian nunez-flores have each been charged with murder in the shooting death of 19-year-old omar reyes. reyes body was found on tileston street bridge. randy: the longtime girlfriend of convicted mobster james whitey bulger will go back before a federal judge this week pleading guilty to contempt charges. catherine greig is already serving an eight-year prison term for helping bulger avoid capture during 16 years on the run. she plans to plead guilty on wednesday to disobeying a judge's order to testify about other people who helped bulger. bulger is serving life for murder and racketeering. emily: two virginia tech students are held without bail, charged in the murder of a 13-year-old girl.

charged with the kidnapping and murder of nicole madison lovell. police say he knew the victim who allegedly climbed out of her window and disappeared on wednesday. her body was found on saturday. 19-year-old natalie keepers was also arrested, charged with helping eisenhauer dispose of the girl's body. randy: four staff members are under arrest, charged in connection with an abuse scandal at a private school. the eagleton school, which is a facility for boys with disabilities in great barrington, was raided this weekend. the four staffers are charged with assaulting students there. a fifth worker is accused of obstruction. all are expected to be arraigned today. emily: democrat presidential candidates return to the granite state this week. they'll attend a debate thursday night at the university of new hampshire. the msnbc debate will take place less than a week before the new hampshire caucus. hillary clinton, bernie sanders, and martin o'malley are all expected to attend. randy: skiers and snowboarders aren't letting warm temperatures keep them off the slopes.

thousands headed to wachusett mountain. they'd love more fresh, natural snow, they're pleased with the turnout. emily: you don't have to bundle up as much. that's a silver lining. cindy: like spring skiing. you're not freezing and enjoying it. what a difference from last year. last year we had had over 37 dimplings of snow. we were just getting into our second big storm out of those four. we've only had just over 10 inches of snow in boston. really nothing coming at us this week. it is the start of a brand new month of february here. average high temperature today is in the mid 30's. by the end of the month, the average high is in the lower 40's. by typically we get over 10 inches of snow in the month of february. we gain just over an hour of daylight. the sun will be setting at about 5:30 by the end of this month. look at the temperatures though. yesterday 57 degrees. average is in the mid 30's.

even as we cool down tomorrow, we're only cooling back into the 40's so above average temperatures here through the middle of the week. that's the story. a cold front off to the west this morning. narrow ribbon of showers associated with this front. i think these may run out of gas by the time they get here. ahead of that frontal boundary temperatures in the 50's not just here but down to new york, philly, d.c. you can see across the rest of the country, no real arctic air to speak of but there is a big storm. this is taking shape right now. back around the denver area. this is going to move toward iowa as we head toward tonight into the day tomorrow. affecting chicago as well. that storm will track to our west so tomorrow is a quiet day. as that system approaches from the west on wednesday, we are going to warm up once again. we are going to get a wind-swept soaking rain in here during the day on wednesday. then behind it, we're clearing things out, drying things out on thursday. notice the temperature trend is down. on friday we're going to be monitoring off-shore storm system.
