93 is a great ride for you from andover right down to the lower deck. no troubles on that upper end of 128. if you're taking the trains this morning, all lines are operating schedule including the commuter rail and subway lines. randy: thank you. this morning all eyes are on iowa. in just hours the first votes will be cast in this contentious race for the white house. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is here with what to watch today. erika: there will certainly be a final flurry of activity from the candidates-- all hoping to secure those critical first votes of this election. caucuses aren't like primaries. iowa voters must attend public meetings in their communities to cast their votes. democrats have to cast their vote in public. republicans use a "secret ballot"-- either a printed sheet or a scrap of paper. the caucuses get underway at 7:00 p.m. local time or 8:00 p.m. our time. campaign volunteers come from all over the country for the final push. ann sheahn came from chicago. >> this is my first time.

i'm very energized. i feel like there's a great energy here so i'm happy to be with the campaign. erika: polls show a tight race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders going into tonight's caucuses. donald trump is still out in front on the republican side, but polls don't mean much today. all that matters is counting those votes. emily: our phil lipof will be in iowa as the votes are tallied. look for his live reports tonight starting at 4:30 p.m. after the votes come in at 11:00 p.m. and tomorrow morning on the eyeopener. meantime one candidate is pinning his hopes to the next voting state. republican john kasich was in new hampshire all weekend, and he'll keep campaigning there today. he's hoping a strong showing there will keep his campaign the new hampshire primary is a week from tomorrow. is in the hospital, and boston police are trying to figure out what happened. all of this unfolding on alpine street in the city's roxbury neighborhood. the eyeopener's kelley tuthill is there with what we know at

kelley: randy, a police officer overnight. there is still crime scene tape up. we're still waiting to hear what police have learned in their here last night. this is what we know right now. police received a call around 9:40 last night reporting a trauma victim on alpine street. a three-year-old child was taken from the home by ambulance to boston medical center. again, police investigating what caused this trauma. at this hour sadly we just still don't know. three-year-old child. there's an active police investigation. live in roxbury, kelley tuthill, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: breaking overnight. a woman is seriously hurt after being struck by a car in boston. this was the scene around 1:40 this morning on mass ave. at boston street. boston e.m.s. transported the woman to boston medical center. emily: right now we are hoping to get new answers in last may's deadly crash involving an amtrak train. today investigators are expected to release evidence that could explain why the train was

it derailed near philadelphia. it reached 106 miles an hour before the engineer activated the emergency brakes. eight people were killed and more than 200 were injured in the crash. new this morning. the mbta is dealing with a slew of problems with its new commuter rail locomotives. "the globe" reports two of the trains had such problems with frozen engines and overheating that they had to be sent back to a pennsylvania facility for tests. the 40 new locomotives started running in 2014 at a cost of about $222 million. the mbta is now working with manufacturers to fix at least nine defects. but the "t" says the new engines are more reliable than the old ones and have been decreasing delays. randy: right now four staff members are under arrest charged in connection with an abuse scandal at a private school. the eagleton school, which is a facility for boys with disabilities in great barrington, was raided this weekend. the four staffers are charged with assaulting students at the school.

obstruction. all are expected to be arraigned today. the case of the so-called mattapan massacre heads to the supreme court. dwayne moore was sentenced to life in prison in the 2010 shooting of four people including a two-year-old. his lawyer sent letters to jurors in the case wanted to know if they were influenced by the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary in connecticut as they deliberated in boston in december of 2012. the district attorney says the letters are intimidating jury members. she wants him banned from communicating with the panel. emily: right now townsend police are asking for help stop a dangerous trend. they say there have been several incidents where someone threw moving vehicle into oncoming the objects have also been thrown at parked cars and homes. but there has been damage two people are recovering this morning after a ski lift accident in new hampshire.

roxbury yesterday. several people were trapped and had to be lowered down. the injuries are not believed to be serious. the ski lift will be inspected before it runs again. randy: right now police in new hampshire are searching for a piece of art stolen right out of a gallery. manchester police say someone made off with this framed pencil drawing from the new hampshire institute of art. the theft happened sometime between november 25 and december 12. the artist, george stavrinos, grew up in somerville. police say they waited this long to ask the public for help because they've run out of right now world health leaders are preparing to hold an emergency meeting to search for ways to stop the spread of the zika virus. the mosquito-born illness is spreading explosively in south and central america. here in the united states, there are now at least 30 people infected in more than 11 states. all of them got the virus outside the country. the lefebvre family of new hampshire is cancelling their

morning. just a couple of colder pockets out along the route 2 corridor as you head up into southwest new hampshire as well. near or at the freezing mark so just be mindful of that. notice the southwesterly wind is out there this morning. it's coming out ahead of a frontal boundary. you can see to our south and west it's in the 50's so this is where our air mass is is coming from today as that frontal boundary approaches. there are clouds ahead of that front so it won't be totally sunny today. we'll call it partly sunny. we'll be in and out of some clouds but these showers may run out of gas before they ever get to us. that threat is there toward this evening especially in southeastern massachusetts. what we're watching is a big storm right now coming out of the rockies. this is going to move across the country. look at the slew of winter weather advisories, warnings, blizzard watch even up through parts of western iowa. this will be a major storm. it will track to our west and send in warmer air ahead of it. we'll get rain out of this by the middle of the week. today is partly sunny. it's breezy and warm. 50 to near 60 degrees. we may make a run toward that

lower 50's with the wind off the water. boston 58. worcester 52. warm, yes but not quite the record highs for today. those are up into the 60's so warm but not quite record territory today. as that front approaches notice the cloud cover mid afternoon but i think it will be this evening 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 that we might see a couple of spot showers. the best chance down along the south coast and the cape. we're clearing it out behind that front tonight. we'll drop back down into in 20's to around the freezing mark tonight. tomorrow for ground hog day it is a quiet one with high pressure in control. before that system moves in from the south and west coming up on wednesday. so wednesday looks to be the wettest day this week. i think as we head into the morning commute, most of the showers are actually going to be still kind of back to our west. it may take until mid to late morning before the rain really gets in here. it will be rain, some embedded downpours. can't rule out a rumble of thunder in the afternoon. impacts here for the evening commute. then this system is getting out of here wednesday night. probably an inch or more of rain out of this system. then it's cooling down for the end of the week.

today the first votes will be cast in the race for the white house. iowa caucus voters meet at 7:00 p.m. tonight to pick their candidates for president. right now a three-year-old child is in the hospital after being injured in some way at a home in roxbury. police have been at the scene on alpine street all night long, but few details have been released. breaking overnight. a woman is seriously injured after being hit by a car in boston. it happened on mass ave near boston street just before 2:00 a.m. boston e.m.s. says the victim was taken ton boston medical center. randy: right now a weymouth firefighter is under investigation all over a facebook post about drug addicts. the eye's frank holland is live in weymouth with the action city leaders are taking today. frank: weymouth's mayor, fire chief, and other officials will hold a meeting after that facebook post went viral. the post allegedly made on a firefighter's personal facebook account.

drug narcan "the worst drug ever created." the post suggests letting overdose victims die. after reading that post, department's official facebook page, some calling the comments disgraceful. we talked to one man who drove straight to the fire department. it's very emotional for him. he lost his son, a veteran, to an overdose in may. >> i wasn't angry. i wasn't going there to start a fight or anything. i know most firemen are great people. that guy, you know, i wanted to bring a photo of my son in when he was in his uniform not that long ago. frank: weymouth's mayor saying, "our first responders take their jobs very seriously. we have a mission to protect and save lives. the post sends a different message than that." it's not confirmed that the firefighter actually posted the message. we reached out to him but we have not received a comment. we are told he is still on the job this morning. live in weymouth, frank holland,

emily: frank, thank you. the longtime girlfriend of convicted mobster james whitey bulger will go back before a federal judge this week pleading guilty to contempt charges. catherine greig is already serving an eight-year prison term for helping bulger avoid capture during his 16 years on the run. she plans to plead guilty on wednesday to disobeying a judge's order to testify about other people who helped bulger stay under the radar. bulger is serving life for murder and racketeering. right now two women are preparing to face a judge charged with keeping several children in filthy conditions. randy: the eyeopener's doug meehan is in worcester with the accusations they'll face today. doug: randy, emily, good morning. they're expected at this courthouse facing several charges connected to that disturbing discovery this weekend. prosecutors say sheyla montalvo and natasha riley-murphy lived in the squalid home on king street with their children, ages 6, 5, and 3. police say the home is infested with mice, animal feces, and

upper 50's this afternoon. boston, marshfield may make a run toward 50 in taunton. that southwesterly wind will keep us in the lower 50's on cape cod. very warm start to this brand new month. we will have clouds in and out throughout the day. by 3:00 this afternoon, a fair amount of clouds across the area. as that front approaches it may be able to scoop up enough moisture off the waters to our south to give a spot shower or two down along the south coast and the cape. that will be this evening. your day is pretty much dry with that chance of a spot shower in southeastern massachusetts this evening. then the front clears our area. the skies clearing out tonight. we're dropping back into the 20's to around the freezing mark by tomorrow. it's a quiet day with high pressure building in for ground hog day tomorrow. we're watching a storm coulding out of the west. by wednesday morning it is to our west pulling up more mild air. so we are going to get rain from this system. it looks like that rain could be heavy at times during the afternoon and evening hours. take a look at it here on future cast. the morning commute may feature a couple of showers but the heavier rain comes in lunchtime right through the afternoon.
