saturday, february 6. antoinette: and i'm antoinette antonio. we want to start off with this image. take a look. oh, my goodness. yesterday's gornlg us sunset. kerry foley sent this picture to us from west roxbury. so many of you sharing your photos of the calm after the storm with us. and in addition to the calm after the storm, it's also that really frigid cold after the storm, danielle. danielle: that's right, antoinette and doug. good morning. you know, you saw that snowy scene picking up anywhere from a couple of inches to 8-12-plus inches in worcester. worcester picking up 12.5 inches of snow. that was the greatest total across the area. now right now it's all about the temperatures that have dropped to 25 in boston but look at orange at 18. 19 degrees right now in worcester. so temperatures in the teens and even single digits plus you factor in a little bit of wind. we still have that out there. it makes it feel like the single digits and teens in most locations.

was a wet snow. any of that on the roads, the sidewalks, the driveways that we didn't take care of or treat, that could freeze in the form of black ice. so be careful out there this morning. temperatures through the day are going to warm up into the upper 30's though. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds. the winds will be out of the south and west at about 5-15. right now we are under high pressure really dominating our weather right now. keeping us dry not only for today but also as we head through the day tomorrow. so the weekend actually is looking pretty good. wecialgd we should even get some melting. we're watching system that's developing off the coast of florida right now. this could be our next bhig winter impact. we'll talk all about it coming u doug and antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. right now tragedy in the heavy snowfall. a little girl is killed when a tree limb falls right on top of her. a family and a community heartbroken. doug: just so sad. neighbors rushed over to try and save the child. the eyeopener's frank holland

frank? frank: doug and antoinette. six-year-old kaleigh kenyon had rushed outside with her dad and older brother to shovel the driveway. that's when a large tree limb snow and landed on top of the we spoke with her brother right after the accident as kaleigh was being treated for serious injuries. nicholas kenyon/brother: she was running out. "daddy, let's make a snowman." next thing i knew, a tree broke. laurie moore/aunt: they heard a crack. my brother screamed. he saw her under the tree. frank: the family rushed over off her. called for an ambulance. sadly, kaleigh died after she was transferred to a boston hospital. after the tragic accident, police are warning other parents to keep their kids away from the trees until the heavy snow melts. antoinette? advice, frank. thank you.

about 50,000 customers around the region. crews are working around the clock to get the lights back on. eversource reports about 23,000 outages. national grid is working to restore an additional 24,000 customers. some of the hardest hit areas include hollis ton, walpole, duxbury and westport. doug: dover police posting this video of a transformer explosion to instagram. as power crews tried to remove a broken tree limb from the lines, the transformer blew up. in canton, live wires came down sizzling the snow. and much the same scene in weston as people made the best of a cold night without power. >> poles split in half and were laying over the wires. wires were down. what a mess. doug: dozens of businesses had to close for the night uncertain of when the lights will come back on. antoinette: tree and power problems also taking their toll on the mbta. the green line's d-branch between kenmore and newton

"the globe" reports the city shelled out 4% more than last year. more than 60 employees were paid over $250,000 a year which includes overtime and other benefits. boston public schools has the most employees making at least $100,000.

was driving down the pike trying to find an open dunkin' donuts. there was a sign that said watch out for falling snow coming off the sign. the stuff is frozen up there. danielle: that's right. it was that real wet snow. it stuck to the trees. it's like pulling the tree branches. antoinette: the trees are so much lower this morning. danielle: a lot of power outages at this hour. we are concerned with that. all that snow. we are going to melt it later today when we get above the freezing mark. but it will take its time so i just want to talk about the amount of snow we saw because we saw anywhere from over a foot in worcester to about 10 inches in leominster. these were the highest totals. boston picking up about 6.8 inches of snow from this. so in terms of where we are so far this season, we're at 17.2 inches of snow. last year though we were already at 54.2 inches of snow. our normal pace is 25.2 inches of snow. yes, we may start to catch up with our normal pace or go above week.

monday and tuesday have a medium chance of some snow. that will continue into wednesday. basically we're watching a series of systems. depending on which one goes first and where it goes will depend on what the second one does. let me tell you all about this because basically ware watching a system down to the south that still has to develop off this stationary front. it's going to be a coastal low pressure system. and it's going to ride up the coast. but it's all going to determine where that track is, how close it gets will then influence our second system we're watching out. here. it's a clipper system but it is going to redevelop after this one and it could potentially impact us too. of course there's a lot of question marks with this. we're going to go step by step with that in just a second. first i want to talk about today because today is going to be a good melting day after we get through this morning. as high pressure really dominates our weather which will give us a lot of sunshine at least through most of the day. there will be some clouds working their way in. right now over boston of obviously still dark. 25 degrees.

nilg that was wet and left untreated like sidewalks, parking lots, there could be some areas of black ice this morning. please be careful. the other thing is with a little bit of wind, it feels more like the teens out there. now as we go through the day, we are going to heat up into the upper 30's, low 40's. i i think that's a too high because of the snow pack. i think we'll stay in the upper 30's. tonight we'll drop back into the 20's and tomorrow a little more sunshine out there. we should warm into the 40's tomorrow. then notice those winds start to turn to the north and east and the clouds increase. here we go. sunday we are dry. here comes that system. it develops pretty quickly. look at the strength of this. track. right now it looks like it may fringe our coastline and potentially give southeastern mass the best chance of seeing some snow. however, areas inland could still see some snow too. in fact, from this. we're going to watch this second system develop an area of low pressure. that could be another chance for

afternoon into wednesday. monday's chance, the best chances for the snow totals going to be again southeastern mass, medium chance in boston. outside of 495 though a real low chance of seeing anything from this. again, this is still a couple days out. every model run is doing things differently. we're going to fine-tune this forecast for you because it could completely miss us. we may not see anything at all on monday. that would system number-two on tuesday a better chance of giving us some snow. either way you look at it, it looks like we're in for an unsettled pattern. temperatures are cold enough to support pretty much all snow. doug and antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. time right now is 5:17. checking other stories happening right now. doug: the death toll is rising in taiwan after a 6.4-magnitude at least seven people are dead; hundreds are injured. 10-day-old baby is among the dead. the quake hit southern taiwan toppling a complex of two high-rise residential buildings. more than 250 people have been pulled from the rubble there and

methadone in her system. vitello was allegedly under the influence of these drugs when she struck and killed amanda turner russell in late december. russell, a young mother, was jogging and training for the boston marathon. a judge set bail at $50,000. antoinette: a new radio communications system at portsmouth naval shipyard could affect some new hampshire residents. the newly activated enterprise land mobile radio system may interfere with radio-controlled garage door openers. most door openers use frequencies reserved for department of defense activity. the d.o.d. says it needs more of those frequencies to improve their communication. affected home or business owners are encouraged to contact their device manufacturer to fix the issue. there's a new warning -- skimmers on self-checkout machines at the supermarket. devices were found in december on the machines at the grocery chain safeway. we usually hear about the skimmers on a.t.m.'s and at gas stations. the devices allow scammers to

numbers. doug: "5 investigates" uncovering a new chapter in a scandal that's spread from boston across the globe. antoinette: survivors of the clergy sex abuse scandal say they're being victimized all over again. investigative reporter mike beaudet uncovering claims of broken promises. this survivor known as "john doe 24" signed an agreement with the roman catholic archbishop of boston where he was promised "continued therapy and healing." at first counseling went well, but then the archdiocese denied more intensive treatments. the archdiocese says it only denied 2% of claims last year. but attorneys and advocates say it's become an increasing problem. suicidal. they've been in intense pain since age 10, 11, 12 years old. now they're 50, 60 years old. they're finally coming to terms with it.

antoinette: the fantasy sports industry taking another hit. doug: and investors continue to get roughed up on wall street. the eye's frank holland with your economy.. frank: the dow, nasdaq, and the s&p all ended the week down. here is a look a the numbers.

the nasdaq fell 146. the s&p 500 dropped 35. tech stocks took a huge hit with apple, amazon, and facebook all closing down. the january jobs report is out. and it shows the unemployment rate fell last month to 4.9%. that's the lowest figure seen since 2008. the labor department says consumer demand is strong. retailers hired more than 57,000 employees last month. restaurants and bars added nearly 49,000. more than 150,000 jobs added total that still fell 40,000 jobs below some projections. a tire recall from one of the nation's biggest tire makers. bridgestone-firestone is recalling 36,000 truck tires. this is for 22.5-inch replacement tires used for trailers. they say the tread can separate causing sudden loss of air pressure. the company will replace free of charge. more issues for the nation's two biggest fantasy sports sites. citigroup, the world's biggest credit card company, is blocking credit and debit payments from new york, for bosto- based draftkings and fan duel, until courts in the empire state

legal. the sites say fantasy sports are games of skill and should not be considered illegal gambling operations. uber is working to make its services in boston more accessible for people with disabilities. the company is working with several disability advocates for new features and services. right now, uber only offers limited wheelchair service in certain cities. in the week ahead we will find out if the fed still plans to raise interest rates as many as four times in 2016. federal resevere bank chair janet yellen gives her semi-annual report on monetary policy to congress. doug: frank, thank you. target is offering something new for shoppers-- a cart for customers with special needs. "caroline's cart" is designed to help parents and caregivers shop with someone who has special needs. a mother came up with the idea after realizing her daughter with rett syndrome would outgrow a standard shopping cart. caroline's carts will be >> now your storm team 5

danielle vollmar. antoinette: we are off to a morning. after all that snow, i know it can be a big pain but sometimes it leaves some gorgeous sights. danielle: indeed. last night, you know, that sunset? antoinette: amazing. danielle: it was incredible. i saw it. i know a lot of you did. i love all the pictures we're seeing on twitter and facebook. if you have some that you haven't tweeted or facebooked danielle vollmar. this one coming from susan in westborough. you can see the sunshine glistening over those snow-covered tree branches. notice it was a heavy, wet snow. that did take down a lot of tree limbs. it is still causing power outages at this hour. please be aware of that. be careful with that. and in terms of the snow, how much we picked up in boston. well, yesterday 6.8 inches fell. so far we're at 17.2 inches of snow. for the year in boston. on average for month, we get about 11.2 inches.

snowiest month on record for boston, picking up 64.8 inches of snow. so we are dry this weekend. which chances of snow enter the forecast beginning monday. it looks like tuesday and maybe even into wednesday now. we're going to talk more about that chance in just a second. first this morning, the concern with temperatures dropping below the freezing mark. any water on the sidewalk or on the back roads left untreated could freeze in form of some black ice. please be careful out there this morning. there. once we get through about lunch lunchtime we warm up above the freezing. that should lead to melting today especially with sunshine out there this morning. so that could help melt some of that snow-covered trees that we're seeing and roads and branches and all of that. now as we head towards tomorrow, we warm up even more. today we'll be in the upper 30's but tomorrow we're talking low to even mid 40's. we'll have a southwest wind that eventually turns on the north and east tomorrow night

system we're watching. basically it's a system that has yet to develop so the track is really unclear at this point. i know it's two days out but we're still flip flopping in terms of the models. right now here it is. it's a coastal low. then we're watching the second system up to the north. this one is going to redevelop behind this one. and bring us a second storm on tuesday. let's talk about the first one. as we go through monday morning, it looks like it may start snowing and there may be a mix on the cape and the islands to begin. quickly flipping over to some snow and then as we go through the day, it continues to blossom. now this model is bringing the snow all the way back to western not necessarily the cape. a lot of the other models tracking it farther off shore meaning the biggest impact for some snow would probably be southeastern mass and the east coast of massachusetts. but it's all going on depend on that first track and how it develops because then we're storm. if that one goes off to sea, this one has a chance of developing into an even stronger storm.

to more parts of the area. that storm on monday though right now, the best chances for the snow not giving out totals as of yet because that track is still uncertain. here are the bands we're talking about. high chances for some snow look likely on the cape and islands in southeastern mass. medium chances in this blue area. basically you get outside of 495, we're in a low chance for some snow. i mean you could still see it but it would be very light in nature. however, there is a chance that none of us see much if anything at all. just a couple of flurries as it goes off to sea. again we're watching that one. then we're watching the one on tuesday. this one is that second one that is going to redevelop just like the first one off the carolina coast. it's going to ride up the coast. that track is very key too to determine whether we see substantial snow or whether we see just flurries or any kind of grading our coastline. there are big question marks in this forecast. either way you look at it, it is cold enough for it to be mainly snow monday and tuesday and even into wednesday before we dry out

doug and antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. it's 5:47. checking more stories happening right now. doug: a search for survivors is underway off the coast of southern california after two planes collide over the ocean. the two small planes crashed near los angeles harbor yesterday. the coast guard says there have been reports of debris about two miles outside the harbor breakwater. divers have found a plane tail number and a partial number from a second plane in the water. officials believe three people were on board the two planes. local airport officials say both planes were flown by experienced pilots. antoinette: next week, pope francis will meet with his counterpart in the russian orthodox church in cuba. it's something that hasn't happened in nearly 1,000 years. the last time the two churches met was when christianity split into eastern and western branches. statements from the vatican and the patriarch's office say the meeting is meant to heal the millenium-old split. twitter is ramping up its efforts to fight terrorism.

giant claims it has suspended 125,000 accounts that either threatened or promoted terrorist acts. twitter says it has been taking action against those users over the last seven months. the social media site says most of the accounts were either associated with isis or supported the terrorist organization. doug: a new documentary on the life, death, and legacy of journalist james foley is about to make its debut. the new hampshire native was murdered by isis in 2014. this film, made by his close childhood friend, tells foley's story through intimate interviews with his family, friends, and fellow journalists while fellow hostages. the documentary premiers tonight on h.b.o. antoinette: it's not on the market yet, but a new sunscreen for sale this summer could offer more health benefits than just protection from sunburns. doug: newscenter 5's heather unruh explains this breakthrough in sunblock. dr. holick: it goes on very smoothly. heather: this new sun screen in short supply right now at the boston university school of
