>> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." doug: good morning, everybody. i'm doug meehan. saturday morning, february 6. antoinette: and i'm antoinette antonio. we want to get your morning started off with this lovely image of yesterday's beautiful sunset. kerry foley is is sending this to us from west roxbury. so many of you sharing those photos of the calm after the storm. and we just love them. it's so nice to wake up to that. you know, a blast of cold air also gets you going this morning. danielle: if you weren't awake, just step outside. you get awake very fast. temperatures are starting out this morning, doug and antoinette, eight degrees in orange. ten in springfield. 20 in worcester. in the teens on the south shore. and then you factor in the winds. and the winds are anywhere from about 5-15 miles an hour now in worcester. and it makes it feel like seven degrees in worcester, like eight in lawrence.

there this morning. and because we had that wet snow yesterday, anything that melted, be careful. it could refreeze in the form of black ice. there could be slick spots out there to contend with this morning. now as we go through the day, we're going to see sunshine through the morning hours. more clouds through the afternoon. notice the temperatures bumping up into the upper 30's, maybe around 40 degrees in some spots. those winds out of the south and west at about 5-15 should allow for some melting of that heavy, wet snow. we could use that right about now. high pressure really dominating our weather right now. we're watching two areas of concern. one hasn't developed yet. this is our next storm system for monday. so we'll talk about the chances for snow in the week ahead coming up. antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. right now tragedy in the heavy snowfall. a little girl is killed when a tree limb falls right on top of her. a family and a community heartbroken. doug: this is so awful.

the eyeopener's frank holland snow fall. frank? frank: doug and antoinette, it happened in a heartbeat. six-year-old kaleigh kenyon had rushed outside with her dad and older brother to shovel the driveway. broke from the weight of the snow and landed on top of the kindergartener. after the accident as kaleigh injuries and fighting to stay alive. nicholas kenyon/brother: she was running out. "daddy, let's make a snowman." next thing i knew, a tree broke. laurie moore/aunt: they heard a crack. my brother screamed. he saw her under the tree. frank: the family rushed over and lifted the massive branch off her. a neighbor started c.p.r. and called for an ambulance. sadly, kaleigh died after she was transferred to a boston hospital. after the tragic accident, police are warning other parents to keep their kids away from the trees until the heavy snow melts. antoinette? antoinette: just a heart-breaking story, frank. thank you.

crews are working around the clock to get the lights back on. national grid is working to restore an additional 24,000 customers. eversource reports about 23,000 outages. some of the hardest hit areas include holliston, walpole, duxbury, and westport. video of a transformer explosion to instagram. as power crews tried to remove a broken tree limb from the lines, the transformer blew up. in canton, live wires came down sizzling the snow. and much the same scene in weston as people made the best of a cold night without power. >> poles split in half and were laying over the wires. wires were down. what a mess. doug: dozens of businesses had to close for the night uncertain of when the lights will come back on. certain anchors had to spend the

him after his court appearance. he and the other men were arrested yesterday at the hilton on dalton street in the back bay. a statement from northeastern says the school will evaluate the circumstances and decide on appropriate action. antoinette: it's now illegal in massachusetts for anyone under 18 to use a tanning bed. governor baker signed the measure into law. supporters of the new law say tanning beds can be linked to a sharp spike in skin cancer cases among young people. the previous law allowed anyone between the ages of 14 and 17 to go tanning if they were with an adult. new numbers just released show a significant spike in boston's payroll. "the globe" reports the city shelled out 4% more than last year. more than 60 employees were paid over $250,000 a year which includes overtime and other benefits. boston public schools has the most employees making at least $100,000. there will soon be a new way to

antoinette: 6:13. welcome back. take a look at this cell phone video capturing the terrifying moment when a huge crane collapsed in new york city. two men with ties to massachusetts caught up in the accident. doug: the eyeopener's frank holland with that part of the story. frank?

frank: doug and antoinette, after the fall of that crane, thomas o'brien of easton trapped underneath the wreckage, but the 73-year-old survived. but david wichs--a 38-year old the mathematical whiz, who worked at a computerized trading firm, was crushed by the crane as he walked to work. three others, including o'brien, o'brien was in his car, waiting for his daughter, when the crane hit. he has a head injury, but he'll be okay. his friends back home are wishing him well. >> if tom happens to see this, we love you. we're hoping the best. we'll see you when you get home. frank: workers were in the process of lowering the 565-feet-tall crane before it got caught in 25-mile-per-hour winds. federal and state investigators will examine the debris to figure out what caused the collapse. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meteorologist danielle vollmar. doug: well, welcome to a saturday morning. my goodness, we all fell for the

degrees. antoinette: look at us. nice and warm. danielle: you fell for the ground hog that said he early spring. then it snowed a couple days later. antoinette: oh, that rodent. danielle: i'm telling you leave the forecast to go the meteorologists. just saying. it was a heavy, wet snow. be careful out there. it's still stuck to those tree branches. there could be some slick spots on the roads so please be aware of that black ice could be out there. in terms of totals, how much we picked up. actually there was a bull's eye area right here near worcester county also into metro west. picking up close to a foot of snow, arlington near eight inches of snow. bradford eight inches of snow. wrentham just about 9. 7.5 in duxbury. you folks on the cape and the islands, it too longer for you to flip from rain to snow. you did pick up impressive totals especially east sandwich almost eight inches of snow. new bedford even near nine

from this system. and we are dry this weekend. we're warming up above the freezing mark. we should get some melting days at least for today and tomorrow. since we're dry. however, we're watching two different storm systems from monday and tuesday that could bring additional chances for snow. and maybe some significant snow depending on the track. this is where it's all coming from. the monday chance is an area of low pressure that has yet to develop right here off the coast of florida. but it will do so later today. then we're going to watch this track carefully because depending on how close it comes to us will determine how much snow we see from it. it will also influence the next system which is this area of low pressure up here to the north and west. it's going to shift close to us and redevelop again off the coastline and bring another coastal system in for us for tuesday into wednesday. so we have a series of systems we're watching but for right

conditions out there. although you can see lake-effect snow showers ongoing in western new york. we are going to look for some of those clouds to make it over our area later this afternoon. and right now we're starting in the 20's, teens and even single digits in new hampshire. so it's a cold start. factor in the winds. it feels like the single digits proaty much everywhere. through the afternoon we warm up into the upper 30's. we bing in the mix of sun and clouds. tomorrow it will be sunnier and warmer with temperatures around 40. now once we get through sunday night, we're watching this first system. you can see it here. this is just one model but what it's trying to do is bring some precipitation as early as monday morning. i think it may hold off until lunchtime or so. it may even start off as some mixed precipitation along the cape and the islands but as it comes down pretty heavy, it could turn over to some snow. of course that track is very dependent how far that snow band gets thrown back because this model is trying to bring it all the way in western massachusetts.

pressurery develops here. this could bring us that snow again on tuesday into wednesday. so let's talk more about that system on monday. shall we? again, it could be coastal snow or if it goes out to sea, it could just be flurries. right now though it does look like we should see some snow from this. the exact track still uncertain. of course, that track will influence that storm behind it coming on tuesday. but it does look like the best chance for the snow is going to be south and essentially southeastern mass seeing the potential for some even plowable snow if this were to all come to fruition. every way you look at it, monday, tuesday, wednesday all chances for snow. we finally start to dry things out on thursday. doug and antoinette. antoinette: here we go again. all right, danielle. thank you. it is 6:18. checking other stories happening right now. doug: the death toll is rising in taiwan after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked that region. at least eleven people are dead; hundreds are injured. and we've just learned a

on monday it's from a coastal low system. the track right now still uncertain. right now the best chances or the high chances for some snow in this deeper purple area. that does include southeastern mass. lower chances outside of 495. with these systems both monday and tuesday because they are coastal systems we're looking for snow, the potential for some wind and also there's coastal concerns with this because our tides are astronomically high. antoinette and doug. antoinette: danielle, thank you. actor joseph gordon-levitt feeling the heat. doug: "the walk" actor was roasted as hasty pudding theatricals' 2016 man of the year. hasty pudding honored gordon-levitt as its 50th man of the year. the actor got a key to the city of cambridge even though it doesn't open any doors. gordon-levitt was also crowned with an elaborate balloon display. last night he received his traditional pudding pot, but he had to work for it.

so glad you're with us. just after 6:30 on this saturday morning. i'm antoinette antonio. doug: i'm doug meehan. how is your back? a little sore from that heavy snow. antoinette: i didn't shovel. doug: you shouldn't. danielle: your husband is doing that. antoinette: he's sore. that's for sure. danielle: the heavy, wet snow. that's why i said to everyone yesterday, as soon as it stopped, get out there and do it. once the temperatures drop it's like a block of ice. that's the concern today this morning. of course, you have the snow on the tree branches. you want to be aware of that because, you know, it still could weigh them down and pull them down. the other thing is we could have some areas of black ice this morning from any areas that melted and then refreezed overnight. in terms of how much snow we've seen, the big jackpot, of course, right here you see in the middle. anywhere from eight inches to a foot of snow in some locations to over a foot in worcester. 3-7 inches on the cape. and 6-9 inches too there. as far as right now,

boston across the globe. antoinette: survivors of the clergy sex abuse scandal say they're being victimized all over again. investigative reporter mike beaudet uncovering claims of broken promises. this survivor known as "john doe 24" signed an agreement with the roman catholic archbishop of boston where he was promised "continued therapy and healing." at first counseling went well, but then the archdiocese denied more intensive treatments. the archdiocese says it only denied 2% of claims last year. but attorneys and advocates say it's become an increasing problem. >> a lot of these victims are suicidal. they've been in intense pain since age 10, 11, 12 years old. now they're 50, 60 years old. they're finally coming to terms with it. yet the church is just slamming the door on their fingers. >> why do you think this is happening? >> i think the church is is more concerned about the size of its own wallet than the emotional well being of the victims.

antoinette: 6:41. welcome back. right now a search for survivors is underway off the coast of southern california after two planes collide over the ocean. the two small planes crashed near los angeles harbor yesterday. the coast guard says there have been reports of debris about two miles outside the harbor breakwater. divers have found a plane tail number and a partial number from

were on board the two planes. local airport officials say both planes were flown by experienced pilots. antoinette: the fantasy sports industry taking another hit. doug: and investors continue to the eye's frank holland with your economy.. frank: the dow, nasdaq, and the s&p all ended the week down. here is a look a the numbers. the dow lost 211 points. the nasdaq fell 146. the s&p 500 dropped 35. tech stocks took a huge hit with apple, amazon, and facebook all closing down. the january jobs report is out. and it shows the unemployment rate fell last month to 4.9%. that's the lowest figure seen since 2008. the labor department says consumer demand is strong. retailers hired more than 57,000 employees last month. restaurants and bars added nearly 49,000. more than 150,000 jobs added total, but that still fell 40,000 jobs below some projections.

the other thing is because we've seen so much snow and because it got so cold, we could see areas of black ice this morning. be aware of that. now the highest total was in worcester picking up over a foot of snow. sharon seeing 11 inches of snow. leominster just over 10 inches of snow. and those are the highest amounts. we are dry this weekend. and temperatures are actually going to go above the freezing mark so we should do some melting both today and tomorrow. now monday and tuesday i leave in a medium chance for snow as we watch our next storm system. both of these storm systems are coastal low pressure systems. and the first one is coming in on monday. right now the track still uncertain at this point. so that's why i'm not talking about totals but the highest chances for snow is mainly in southeastern mass. that does include parts of the south shore south of plymouth, i think. then you go north of that, you have a medium chance of seeing some snow outside of 495, a low chance. if that track goes a little bit

amounts, we could see some flurries. if it goes closer to us, those amounts could be pushed back farther in terms of how much snow you could see. that monday chance, the reason why it's still uncertain, it hasn't formed yet. it's a stationary front here. it's going to develop an area of low pressure its a coastal low. we'll watch this track very carefully to see just how close it comes to our shoreline. that's also going to impact our next storm system because as this one you see up here, it's tuesday, wednesday it looks like. it is going to redevelop off the coastline too. and depending on how this one does will determine just if that one gets more strength or less strength so we see there will be just some flurries or we could even see some snow and even some plowable snow when all is said and done. as far as what is happening right now though, high pressure dominating our weather. a gorgeous sunrise ongoing over boston. it's a snowy scene. 25 degrees currently. feeling more like 16 so if you're headed out to maybe play

bundle the kids up because it feels very cold outside. today temperatures warm up into the upper 30's. it's a mix of sun and clouds although sunshine to start. tonight we drop back into the 20's and then tomorrow we warm back into the low to mid 40's. those winds begin to turn to the north and east. they become pretty gusty from these two storm systems so i do want to talk about this one on tuesday because this one is going to follow the other one. as this one pushes off shore we watch this second low pressure system develop. so it looks like tuesday into wednesday, more snow could be thrown at us. the big thing with this is it look like it is cold enough for mainly snow. but we have to watch this very carefully because the intensity is really uncertain with this one. could be flurries, light snow showers. there could be moderate bands of snowfalling in. it could be for all the regions or just the coastline. these are coastal systems so it looks like the coastline has the greatest impact as of right now. of course a change in the track could change everything.
