it's saturday, february 6. antoinette: thank you so much for joining us. i'm antoinette antonio. we want to start off this morning by taking a live look. we're on the roads, on the rose kennedy green way this morning. look at all the snow on the left side. it's a pretty sight, but driving conditions not too bad on the main roads, danielle. it is cold out there though this morning. danielle: yes, it is indeed. you know that snow could lead to those roads being, you know, if they're not untreated, some black ice out there this morning to talk about. be aware and be careful out there especially with sidewalks i think in the parking lots. we picked up anywhere from 8-12 inches of snow in this bull preponderance eye of an area. a lot of areas seeing anywhere from 6-9 inches of snow in boston ray lone. 6.8 inches of snow fell yesterday. right now it's 26 in the city though. nine in bedford. nine in orange. and as we go through the next 12 hours, say, worcester county, you're going to warm up above the freezing mark into the mid 30's this afternoon.

should see some melting for all that snow that we have on the trees and on the ground. so looking forward to that. high pressure dominating our weather right now. you see a couple of lake-effect snow showers ongoing in parts of western new york and some of those clouds may make it-- their way towards us later today. but we're watching two systems. one has not even formed yesterday here down to south. that could bring us our next shot of snow. we'll talk about when coming up. antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. we are follow breaking news right now. boston fire fighters going door to door in charlestown checking homes after high levels of c.o. were found in one apartment. firefighters on the scene say no one was hurt. the checks are being made as a precaution. right now tragedy in the heavy snowfall. a little girl is killed when a tree limb falls right on top of her. a family and a community heartbroken. doug: just awful. neighbors rushed over to try and

snow fall. frank? frank: doug and antoinette, six-year-old kaleigh kenyon had rushed outside with her dad and older brother to shovel the that's when a large tree limb broke from the weight of the snow and landed on top of the kindergartener. we spoke with her brother right was being treated for serious injuries and fighting to stay alive. nicholas kenyon/brother: she was running out. "daddy, let's make a snowman." next thing i knew, a tree broke. laurie moore/aunt: they heard a crack. my brother screamed. he saw her under the tree. frank: the family rushed over and lifted the massive branch off her. a neighbor started c.p.r. and called for an ambulance. sadly, kaleigh died after she was transferred to a boston hospital. after the tragic accident, police are warning other parents to keep their kids away from the trees until the heavy snow melts. antoinette: certainly some good

right now the power is out for around the region. crews are working around the clock to get the lights back on. right now national grid is reporting just over 21,000 outages. eversource has over 22,000 customers without power. dover police just tweeted that 20% of that town still has no electricity. doug: dover police posting this to instagram. as power crews tried to remove a broken tree limb from the lines, the transformer blew up. in canton, live wires came down sizzling the snow. and much the same scene in weston as people made the best of a cold night without power. >> poles split in half and were laying over the wires. live wires were down. what a mess. doug: dozens of businesses had to close for the night uncertain of when the lights will come back on. is back to normal again on the

downed trees and signal problems forced the "t" to suspend service for hours, the "t" just tweeted that all removed and service is on schedule. commitment 2016. the stage is set for the final hampshire voters head to the polls. it is crunch time for the candidates. race is shifting a bit. doug: newscenter 5's juli frenzie and the candidate who failed to show up. juli: republican frontrunner donald trump elected for a snow day friday but wanted to let primary voters know he's with them in spirit. trump: the great slogan of new hampshire, "live free or die," means so much to so many people. what a great slogan. congratulations, new hampshire. wonderful job. juli: trump's absence had his g.o.p. rivals rolling their eyes along the snowy campaign trail; namely, jeb bush. he tweeted this photo saying even his 90-year-old mother couldn't be stopped by mother nature.

voter: oh, yeah. juli: in derry friday evening, marco rubio took his own subtle shot at trump saying his immigration policy has nothing to do with religious customs. it's about what is best for americans. rubio: when i'm president, if we don't know who you are and we don't know why you're coming, you are not getting into the united states of america. juli: rubio's plan includes hiring more border agents, completing fencing, and enforcing an e-verify system that keeps illegal immigrants from working here. undecided voters told newscenter 5 they're still shopping around this weekend deciding how to make their choice count. undecided voter: it's difficult to think about supporting someone who will finish in fourth or fifth or sixth place when winning the election is important to me. momentum though. in a new suffolk university/"boston globe" poll, he's just 10 points behind donald trump which means that rubio has nearly doubled his percentage points since just last month.

boston prostitution sting. dr. harvey shapiro had nothing to say when we tried to talk to him after his court appearance. he and the other men were arrested yesterday at the hilton on dalton street in the back bay. a statement from northeastern says the school will evaluate the circumstances and decide on antoinette: it's now illegal in massachusetts for anyone under 18 to use a tanning bed. governor baker signed the measure into law. supporters of the new law say tanning beds can be linked to a sharp spike in skin cancer cases among young people. the previous law allowed anyone between the ages of 14 and 17 to go tanning if they were with an adult. new numbers just released show a significant spike in boston's payroll. "the globe" reports the city shelled out 4% more than last year. more than 60 employees were paid over $250,000 a year which includes overtime and other benefits. boston public schools has the

$100,000. doug: a public wake for former providence mayor buddy cianci. he will lie in repose at city hall outside the office he occupied for more than 21 years. cianci died late last month at age 74. he was the city's longest-serving mayor but was forced from office twice due to felonies. cianci's wake will begin at noon today until 6:00, calling hours continue tomorrow followed by funeral services on monday. do you have a banged-up iphone? antoinette: well, getting an upgrade may have just gotten a lot easier. we'll tell you how. doug: a 13-year-old learning to walk all over again after being run over by a train. his long road to recovery, and his warning to other kids. antoinette: a deadly crane collapse in new york city. the local man rescued from under the wreckage. danielle: we've got a quiet weekend on tap with a mix of sun and clouds, but i'm tracking a series of systems.

antoinette: welcome back. it's 8:13. some cell phone video capturing the terrifying moment when a huge crane collapsed in new york city. two men with ties to massachusetts caught up in the accident. doug: the eyeopener's frank holland with that part of the story. frank? frank: doug and antoinette, after that crane fell, thomas o'brien of easton trapped underneath the wreckage, but the 73-year-old survived. but david wichs--a 38-year old harvard grad--was killed. the mathematical whiz, who worked at a computerized trading firm, was crushed by the crane as he walked to work. three others, including o'brien, are recovering this morning. o'brien was in his car, waiting for his daughter, when the crane fell.

be okay. his friends back home are wishing him well. >> if tom happens to see this, we love you. we're hoping the best. we'll see you when you get home. frank: workers were in the process of lowering the 565-feet-tall crane before it got caught in 25-mile-per-hour winds. federal and state investigators will examine the debris to figure out what caused the crane to come crashing down. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meteorologist danielle vollmar. doug: let's talk about that storm a little bit yesterday. down in new york they had the 25-mile-per-hour winds. during the height of the storm here, it was not too bad. later the winds started to pick up. danielle: we had wind gusts in excess of 45 miles an hour later last night from it as it pulled away from us. antoinette: then the snow blowing off the trees. i thought it started snowing again. danielle: that was just the heavy, wet snow trying to come off. more of that is going to happen today as we get melting going on

those snow totals because worcester, you were the ringer with over a foot of snow. boylston picking up 11 inches of snow. leominster, just over 10 inches of snow. and boston picked up just over six inches of snow, closer to actually seven inches of snow. now this weekend we are dry and temperatures are going to rise above the freezing mark so we should be able to melt that snow later this afternoon as well as for sunday. however, monday and tuesday, notice i put a medium chance in for some snow. our monday chances actually coming from a storm system that has not yet developed. it's going to develop down here as an area of low pressure so that track is is still uncertain at this point. we're going to watch this very carefully because depending on how close it comes to our coast will determine just how much snow we get in some locations. that will also affect the storm that's coming tuesday into wednesday. it's this area of low pressure here. it's going to redevelop a coastal low system.

coast of massachusetts will see the greatest impact from both of these systems. but closer to home today, right now, just a couple of lake-effect snow showers ongoing off ontario. we may see a couple of these clouds later this afternoon. otherwise, it's a sunny start. it's a cold start so if you're headed out the door, bundle up. 26 in boston with a wind out of the west making it feel like 18 degrees but a lot of spots starting in the single digits or even the teens out there today. now we are going to warm up into the upper 30's in boston. we will look for a mix of sun and clouds today. tonight it will be clear. temperatures drop back into the 20's and 30's and maybe a few teens in some locations. and then tomorrow we are sunny yet again. look at these temperatures warming back into the low to even mid 40's so we should really start to melt that snow tomorrow. however, that is is just in time for our next two systems so here's the one, here's the other. here comes this first one.

may even start as early as overnight sunday into first thing monday morning. it will continue through monday. of course, this track still not necessarily certain, although this model trying to bring snow as far back as western massachusetts. and then this second low will develop. depending on how this one goes about, this influence this one. obviously the highest amounts are going to be in southeastern massachusetts as you can see on this map. of course, a shift in the track could take those totals farther off shore or a shift this way could bring the totals on shore and closer to, say, worcester and outside of 495. so obviously a lot of things still to forecast. we're going to watch those models for the latest run. what we're looking for is a chance for snow, not only on monday but also on tuesday from the second system. it may continue even into wednesday so we're in for a wintery, unsettled pattern to start the workweek. and then temperatures behind it dropping back into the 20's.

antoinette and doug. antoinette: it's because we got spoiled last week. that's what happened. doug: we had to put the flip-flops away. antoinette: time now is 8:17. checking other stories happening right now. doug: the death toll is rising in taiwan after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked that region. at least 13 people are dead; hundreds are injured. and we've just learned a 10-day-old baby is among the dead. the quake hit southern taiwan toppling a complex of two high-rise residential buildings. more than 250 people have been pulled from the rubble there and dozens more at another high-rise building. the rescues continue at the hour. antoinette: live strains of the zika virus now detected in saliva and urine. researchers in brazil just announcing that development. the discovery leads to new questions about how the disease can spread. scientists with the c.d.c. travel to south america next week to gather more information on the virus. the zika virus is most prevalent right now in latin american countries. doug: apple will now let you

self-checkout machines at the supermarket. devices were found in december on the machines at the grocery chain safeway. we usually hear about the skimmers on a.t.m.'s and at gas stations. the devices allow scammers to steal credit and debit card numbers. doug: "5 investigates" uncovering a new chapter in a scandal that's spread from boston across the globe. antoinette: survivors of the clergy sex abuse scandal say they're being victimized all over again. investigative reporter mike beaudet uncovering claims of broken promises. this survivor known as "john doe 24" signed an agreement with the roman catholic archbishop of boston where he was promised "continued therapy and healing." at first counseling went well, but then the archdiocese denied more intensive treatments. the archdiocese says it only denied 2% of claims last year. but attorneys and advocates say it's become an increasing problem. >> a lot of these victims are

antoinette: right now a search for survivors is underway off the coast of southern california after two planes collide over the ocean. the two small planes crashed near los angeles harbor yesterday. the coast guard says there have been reports of debris about two miles outside the harbor breakwater. divers have found a plane tail number and a partial number from a second plane in the water. officials believe three people were on board the two planes. local airport officials say both planes were flown by experienced pilots. the fantasy sports industry taking another hit. doug: and investors continue to get roughed up on wall street. the eye's frank holland with your economy. frank: the dow, nasdaq, and the s&p all ended the week down. here is a look a the numbers. the dow lost 211 points. the nasdaq fell 146. the s&p 500 dropped 35. tech stocks took a huge hit with apple, amazon, and facebook all closing down. the january jobs report is out. and it shows the unemployment rate fell to 4.9%.

since 2008. the labor department says consumer demand is strong. retailers hired more than 57,000 employees last month. restaurants and bars added nearly 49,000. more than 150,000 jobs added total, but that still fell 40,000 jobs below some projections. more issues for the nation's two biggest fantasy sports sites. citigroup, the world's biggest credit card lender, is blocking credit and debit payments from new york for boston-based draftkings and fan duel until courts in the empire state decide if fantasy sports are legal. the sites say fantasy sports are games of skill and should not be considered illegal gambling operations. uber is working to make its services in boston more accessible for people with disabilities. the company is working with several disability advocates for new features and services. right now, uber only offers limited wheelchair service in certain cities. in the week ahead we will find out if the fed still plans to raise interest rates as many as four times in 2016.

"caroline's cart" is designed to help parents and caregivers shop with someone who has special needs. a mother came up with the idea after realizing her daughter with rett syndrome would outgrow a standard shopping cart. caroline's carts will be available starting march 19. >> now your storm team 5 forecast with meteorologist danielle vollmar. antoinette: we warmed up to 21 degrees this morning. danielle: steamy. antoinette: look outside. it's so pretty out there. if you have to be out shoveling or driving in all of the snow, it's pretty. danielle: not so bad. sit inside and watch. that way you won't get so cold. a beautiful sthot over boston. a lot of sunshine reflecting off the buildings. just so you know because we do have all that sunshine out there, we have all that snow that is reflecting that sun, it

step outside the door. there you go. we're driving. boston area. the roads look really good. oh, yeah. really nice. look at all that snow. just beautiful. what a winter scene. in terms of how much we saw, well, anywhere to near a foot in west boylston to about eight inches in arlington. over eight inches in wrentham. near eight inches in duxbury. and even you folks on the cape and the islands that had to wait the longest for it to flip over to snow yesterday saw just about eight inches in east sandwich and just about nine inches in new bedford. now today, tomorrow, we're dry. we're going to see melting with some sunshine and temperatures going above the freezing mark. however, monday and tuesday i'm some snow. the monday chance, here it is. you don't even see it on the map yet because it hasn't developed. we're watching an area of low pressure that is going to develop here at the coastal low. we're going to have to watch

just how close it comes to our coastline because that will impact in terms of totals. right now it looks like obviously closer to the coast you're going to see the highest amounts. then that will also impact the track. this storm system on tuesday and wednesday because it is going to develop into another coastal low and follow suit. so in terms of how much snow, we can't really give out a number yet because the models are all over the place. it looks like the highest amounts are conason trailted south and east. medium chance in and around boston out to about 495 and then a lower chance outside of 495. that being said these bands could all shift depending on that track for monday. right now though lots of sunshine. let's talk about it. 26 degrees over boston. 18 degrees is what it feels like with that wind. it will pick up through the afternoon. so there will be a bit of a wind chill. high temperatures upper 30's today with a mix of sun and clouds. now tomorrow we'll moderate back into the low to even mid 40's in spots.

and then we're going to see those winds turn to the north and east ahead of our next system as it develops. here we go with this. it will develop through the day of sunday and notice this is just one model though. what it's trying to do is bring in that precipitation as early as monday morning. notice it's in the form of snow pretty much for everyone. then this second system here is going to a secondary low. we're going to watch that carefully. of course this exact track is uncertain at this point. that will impact the other storm system behind it. in fact, you can see that on tuesday in terms of that. whatever happens with that first track, that second one will then develop. it could be a stronger storm if the first one goes farther off shore or it could be a weaker one meaning maybe lighter snow showers and less intensity or maybe it tracks off shore. again lots of question marks with this, but there are chances monday, tuesday and that should linger into wednesday for some snow. of course some accumulating snow and obviously with temperatures
