and the cold continues. brrr. emily: what a weekend. cindy: incredible. coldest air mass in about 50 years around here. pretty impressive. what we don't have this morning even though we do have the cold. we don't have the wind. it makes a huge difference out there this morning. take a look. winds generally under 10 miles an hour so the wind chills could be worse. this is what you need to dress for though right now. it does feel like it's 15 below in worcester. and it feels like it's three below in boston even though the actual temperature is above zero in town. it's only six above. we're two below in worcester. six below plymouth. beverly running two degrees below zero right now. we step you through the next 12 hours and notice we have a good lunchtime. temperatures come out of the single digits into the teens here by late morning. and we will get into the 20's this afternoon but notice how the clouds increase. it turns mostly cloudy here this afternoon with late day high temperatures in the upper 20's to near 30 degrees. but this warm-up comes as we

you can see this snow here breaking out across pennsylvania down around d.c. that's what's coming our way by this evening. during the evening commute, snow is going to break out. roads may get a little bit slippery this evening. we're expecting 1-3 inches of snow before a changeover to sleet and freezing rain tonight. winter weather advisory up for that reason. we'll step you through the timeline on this and coming up with big changes in the temperature tomorrow just ahead. we have had early trouble out there, olessa. olessa: the mbta is working through the night to make sure your trains are rolling tomorrow. crews spent the day in charlestown preparing replacement rails. several rails broke from the cold today. temporary rails are in, and permanent rails will go in soon. the "t" says it will keep red and orange line trains underground in tunnels overnight to limit their exposure to the cold. of course if theror any early morning problems we'll keep you posted. here's a live look outside. the expressway by the gas tank. the northbound side looking good in both directions. let's get to the maps. the rest of your triples quiet.

93 south at the zakim. problem-free start as you make your way south, 24, 95, route 3 looking good on the pike and route 9. issue-free trip 93 southbound out of methuen down to leverett connector. the trains and buses starting on schedule. randy: breaking overnight. raging flames tear through an apartment building in worcester. just look at the dramatic video from the scene. and this was a brutal battle for firefighters. emily: the eyeopener's frank holland is live at the scene on preston street. frank: the three-alarm fire erupted inside of a triple decker on preston street. take a look behind me. crews still on the scene. also dramatic video from earlier this morning. flames bursting out of the roof and out of the the windows. the worcester telegram reports all three men inside this triple decker made it out in time. one of those men was taken to the hospital after slipping on ice after making a very hasty escape. firefighters also had to deal

a short time ago the fire chief talked about how hard it was to fight this fire in these conditions. >> basically all of our equipment is frozen. the pipes are frozen. the ladder pipes were frozen. it was just a difficult time getting some water on it. frank: it's still inclear what caused this fire. officialtell us they're still here putting out hot spots. this is the third fire in worcester tonight. they said those freezing conditions made it especially hard to deal with. fortunately no injuries to firefighters while fighting these three fires in worcester. again the investigation continues into this fire and the other two fires. we'll continue to follow this story all morning long and bring you the latest. live in worcester, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now a deadly fire is under investigation in fall river. this was the scene on eastern avenue last night. the body of a man found on the third floor of a multi-family building. firefighters battled the flames and struggled with the frigid temperatures and frozen equipment.

not been released. right now three fires in one town are under investigation. really rough night for weymouth firefighters. in fact, they say they've never had to fight that many fires at once before. it started with flames ripping through a home on arnold street. a short time later two other fire calls hit the department. investigators say in at least two of the cases people were trying to stay warm and thaw frozen pipes. >> fuel from a wood fire stove that was left next to the house. again getting rid of embers from your fireplace is very important using a metal can. emily: at least a dozen nearby fire departments were called in to help. no one was hurt. >> just come back, buddy. just come back, please. randy: a father's plea after his right now boston police are him down. the eyeopener's doug meehan is

doug? doug: right here at the bell and hand tavern. disappeared after a night out with family. 22-year-old zachary marr was last seen just before 2:00 on saturday morning near the popular boston bar. he stepped outside to make a call, then messaged his cousins, saying he couldn't get back inside. when the bar emptied, marr was nowhere to be found. a fun night out gone wrong. >> it's not often that he's able to go into the city and have some fun with his cousins. you know, they were celebrating his birthday. doug: marr's dad says the disappearance is completely out of character. he says he just wants his son to return home, no questions asked. live in boston, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: doug, thank you. right now the body of late

scalia is back home in virginia. but even as friends and family mourn, the controversy over what happens now is growing. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is tracking developments. erika: we're getting new information this morning about how scalia died. meantime, the white house appears to be pushing back against calls to put a hold on replacing him on the bench. republicans say the president should not nominate a successor in his final year in office. but abc news reports the president will likely nominate someone who has won the praise of the g.o.p. in the past. some names floating around-- merrick garland, the chief judge of the d.c. circuit court of appeals. jane kelly, confirmed unanimously by the senate as circuit court judge in 2013. and sri srinivasan, who served under the bush administration. no official autopsy was performed, but it is believed justice scalia died of natural causes, possibly a heart attack while he slept at a resort in west texas. he was 79 years old. randy: commitment 2016. a first on the campaign trail today.

is joining the fray. his younger brother jeb bush today in south carolina. the former president won a bruising south carolina primary on his way to the oval office in 2000. today hillary clinton has her sights set on nevada. weekend and has three events scheduled there today. the democratic caucuses there are set for next weekend. clinton got some help on the icon and georgia congressman john lewis. bernie sanders heads to michigan today. he also spent the weekend trying to shore up support in the black community. he praised president obama during an appearance before an african american congregation in nevada. this morning former boston mayor ray flynn is resting at his south boston home. he had surgery to implant a defibrillator. flynn underwent the operation after crashing his car into a neighbor's house last week. according to a family spokesman, doctors believe that flynn may

as "aborted sudden cardiac arrest" before the crash. that irregular heart rhythm may have caused him to pass out behind the wheel. the coast guard will be holding a public hearing on the loss of the "el faro" this week. the first session of the public marine board investigation will focus on the condition of the ship before it sank in hurricane joaquin. this is separate from the ntsb investigation. two people from massachusetts were among the 33 who died when the ship sank in october. randy: right now a man is under arrest charged with assaulting a medical worker and threatening to "blow up" brockton hospital. 21-year-old saud alonize claims to be a saudi arabian national. police say he was at the hospital because he was hurt in an earlier fight. they also say he was drunk and demanded to talk to the saudi consulate. services will be held today for the teacher killed when a manhole cover smashed into her car.

art teacher in milton. she was killed friday on i-93 south while driving to work. a wake is set for today in winchester with funeral services tomorrow. after her death, mass-dot did emergency inspections of more than 900 structures on the highway. workers say they found no threat to public safety. emily: survivors and victims' families are preparing to mark 13 years since the deadly nightclub fire in rhode island. the campaign for a planned memorial to the 100 victims has now raised $1.6 million. it should be completed by october. the fire was sparked by pyrotechnics for the band great white which ignited foam soundproofing in the nightclub. prostitution scandal forced him to resign, a former governor is emily: the new, violent claims and a rental car rigged with a potentially deadly device. the booby trap waiting for an randy: new this morning. fish can be full of health benefits.

we're transitioning out that the deep record-setting cold from the weekend into messier weather coming in tonight. we do have a winter weather advisory through the evening hours early tomorrow morning. we're going to get a little burst of snow this evening that changes over to sleet and freezing rain overnight. so it is going to get a little bit slippery here tonight. look at the temperatures this morning. we're still in the cold. it is below zero in a lot of spots this morning. six above right now in boston but it's actually below zero here on the north shore in beverly back into worcester county. now. it is two below worcester. six below south of town around the plymouth area as well. morning. hour. wind chills will be hovering below zero for the next few notice what happens this afternoon. winds stay light. they shift around to the south and the temperatures come up. wind chills will be in the teens this afternoon. it's going to feel a whole lot better than what we've been dealing with the past couple of dayses. high temperatures late in the

around-- but the trade-off is clouds coming in. it's clear out there right now. we have sunshine through lunchtime. the clouds come in as we watch a warm front here to the south start to lift in our direction. there you see the clouds beginning to move in around lunchtime and then they're thick inning up this afternoon. by 7:00 tonight, notice there is some snow breaking out to the west. i expect snow to develop here between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. and the roads will become slippery very quickly because it's been so cold the past few days. just a little bit of snow is going to stick to the roads immediately. then overnight we're going to watch that snow change over to a mix and eventually all rain by tomorrow. you can see by 11:00 tonight we're snowing boston to worcester points north but already seeing that changeover to the south. i think it's a quick change to rain close er to the coastline but stubborn cold may linger through the merrimack valley and into northern worcester county through the wee hours of tomorrow morning before we start to warm those temperatures up. notice by tomorrow morning nothing more than a few showers for the morning commute. 1-2 inches in most spots. heaviest amounts once you get

it's enough to make things slipperily through the overnight as the warm front lifts up. we'll watch a strong southerly wind develop tomorrow afternoon. that is going to bring warmer temperatures on in. we could see gusts to 50 miles per hour by the time we get to tuesday evening. look what it does to the temperatures starting out near 30 this evening. by tomorrow morning we're in the low to mid 40's. we actually jump into the 50's around here tomorrow afternoon. temperatures. but again it does come in with that rain. although it's just a few showers early tomorrow morning, by lunchtime they're becoming a little pit more numerous. as we get into the afternoon and evening hours look at that band of heavier rain coming through boston. probably close to 8:00 tomorrow evening. that's the time when we could see the really strong winds coming on in. this is all getting out of here on wednesday but inch, inch-and-a-half of water coming in on top of the snow so big puddles developing here especially late tomorrow and then it does quiet down the rest of the week. snow the temperatures aren't so bad. olessa: even 30's will feel nice after what we went through.

wild temperature swings on the way. olessa: there's the expressway by the gas tank, the northbound side heading to the bottom of the screen. you can see still very light on volume. let's get on the maps and check out the rest of your ride. so far no complaints. 93 southbound that construction gone as you travel past the zakim bridge. south of town also wide open on routes 3, 24, 95 getting by at the speed limit and then as you make your way along the pike and route 9 also problem free. north of town 93 southbound good out of methuen down to the leverett connector. route 1 is is quiet. 128 as well. the trains and buses so far on schedule. emily: new this morning. another sign that the mbta is cancelling late-night service. union officials tell the "boston globe" that late-night shifts were left out of the spring schedule pick for subway drivers. but the "t" has not announced the official cancellation of the service. a control board member claims eliminating the shifts, which start march 19, was a matter of practicality. the proposal comes to a vote february 29. randy: new trouble could be brewing for new york's disgraced former governor.

investigation for allegedly choking a woman inside a manhattan hotel room. spitzer and the 25-year-old woman reportedly had a romantic relationship for two years, and it's believed they were breaking up before the incident. no charges have been filed. the woman involved is expected to be okay. spitzer quit as governor over a 2008 hooker scandal. right now an explosive mystery is under investigation in new mexico. a rental car is returned rigged to explode. a mechanic found an explosive device attached to the car after it was returned to a facility near the albuquerque airport. the bomb squad disarmed the device and nobody was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out how it got there and if anyone was targeted. emily: 5:19. your economy headlines now. asian markets were mostly higher today, led by a jump in japanese stocks. wall street is closed today in observance of presidents' day. that's after u.s. benchmarks ended higher friday. the dow closing at 15,973.

management style in an effort to curb costs. up until now local managers have made decisions about which products to purchase and even how the stores the store is designed. the company is now shifting those decisions to its texas headquarters. the company will also start using software to help with scheduling and restocking shelves. experts say the changes could be risky as the store moves away from what makes it unique. new accusations against volkswagen in an unprecedented emissions scandal. two sources close to the matter tell reuters a high-ranking employee warned managers in may of 2014 that u.s. regulators may examine engine software. that was more than a year before the carmaker admitted to cheating on tests. the justice department is suing volkswagen for environmental law violations.

no accident to report at this time. you're quiet in boston as you make your way south. as you travel north of town no issues here. 93 southbound out of methuen. route 1 through suing us also quiet. and route 3 out of chelmsford. the trains and buses are running on schedule. randy. randy: now to the breaking news we're following in worcester. massive flames just consuming an apartment building overnight. emily: let's get right to the eye's frank holland. he's tracking developments from the scene. frank: this three-alarm fiery see behind me. take a look. we have cell phone video from earlier this morning. you see the flames just raging out of windows and out of the roof. one man was inside the building at the time of the fire. he he is camed unhurt. sub zero temperatures made fighting this fire a real challenge. hydrants were not frozen but the line and ladders were. the deputy fire chief telling us it was very difficult getting water on to the flames. this is the third fire in the city tonight.

of two-alarm fires. all three of these fires remained under investigation. crews still trying to figure out the cause. live in worcester this morning, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: frank, thank you. other stories we're following right now on the eye. one man is dead after a fire in fall river. he was found on the top floor of this three-unit building on eastern avenue last night. it's not clear how the fire started. randy: right now boston police are asking for help tracking down this missing man from harvard. 22-year-old zachary marr was last seen early saturday morning near the bell in hand tavern in boston. family members say he stepped outside to make a call. emily: right now the body of supreme court justice antonin scalia is back home in virginia. investigators say the 79-year-old died of a heart attack at a texas ranch this weekend. despite pushback from republicans, president obama

right now dozens of people are stuck on a tramway in the bitter cold. is here with the rescueand the erika: the breakdown had skiers, snowboarders, and sightseers hampshire's cannon mountain. a mechanical issues brought the tramway to a screeching halt feet from the terminals. 48 people were on board including a family with an eight-month-old child. passengers knew immediately something was wrong. >> it swung hard. it swung back. we knew that there was a problem. erika: firefighters helped passengers rappel from the cars before taking them down the mountain on snow cats. no one was hurt. it's not clear when the tramway will reopen. randy? randy: battling back from a devastating injury. the hockey player hurt during the women's winter classic shows her true strength. teammates on the boston pride calling denna laing an inspiration on and off the ice. they took the regular season title yesterday afternoon in

crowd. laing surprised teammates in the locker room before the game. she's facing an uphill battle after a severe spinal injury on new year's eve. but perseverance is something this disciplined athlete is familiar with. >> when i get down a little bit, it could be worse. it could be worse. you can't really control what happens to you. but you can control how you react to it. randy: proceeds from raffle tickets and bracelet sales at yesterday's game go to the denna laing fund. emily: a scare for people in san francisco. randy: the unusual attacks happening on the golden gate bridge. a possible prelude to the oscars. how diversity took center stage at last night's bafta awards. emily: and updates ahead on our breaking news this morning. crews are on the scene of a large fire on preston street in worcester. there are no serious injuries.

upper 20's for highs today. snow changes to sleet, freezing rain and eventually all rain overnight. look at those temperatures into the 50's tomorrow. some heavy rain expected by evening before we clear things out on wednesday. emily: at the box office this weekend, the r-rated "deadpool" smashing records. the movie stars ryan reynolds as a marvel anti-hero. it brought in $135 million in its first three days in theaters. that beats the $85-million record set last year. in fact, the movie had the biggest r-rated opening ever. randy: diversity takes center stage at the british oscars. the british academy of film and television awards which act as a precursor to the academy awards were held at the royal opera house in london last night. the event comes on the heels of a recent flare-up in criticism over the lack of diversity in hollywood, an issue actors say is prevalent in the industry.

holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: one man is dead after a fire in fall river. the man was found on the top floor of this three-unit building on eastern avenue last night. firefighters say the cold weather made their response more challenging. one firefighter suffered minor injuries after slipping. the cause of that now under investigation. three fires in the same town are under investigation. it started with flames ripping through a home on arnold street in weymouth before two other calls came into the department. investigators say in at least two of the cases, people were trying to stay warm and thaw pipes. no one was hurt. doug: the search for a missing man continues this morning. it he was last seen at the bell in behind tavern early saturday morning, and now his family is really starting to worry. >> it's past 40 hours. we're all getting a little

b's lose, 6-5. randy: if you're just now getting up and wondering if it's any warmer this morning, it is not. cindy: i suppose it is. we were nine below zero yesterday morning in boston. it is six above zero right now. there's not a ton of wind out there. the winds generally under 10 miles per hour. wind chill is is not a big issue: two below beverly. three below lawrence. worcester you're two below zero. orange is 14 below right now. these are the temperatures not the wind chill. we just dropped another degree there. six below right now in plymouth. we do recover this afternoon though into the 20 toss around 30 degrees. this is going to happen very late in the day. our winds are turning around to the south. they're trying to bring up that warmer air but they're event ally going to bring in some snow. we have a winter weather advisory later this afternoon into tonight for a little bit of snow and then a changeover to sleet, freezing rain. you can see it's clear out there right now.

the tail end of the evening commute will likely feature some roads becoming snow-covered and a little bit slippery. we watch this warm front lift on north ward. that snow begins to change over to sleet and freezing rain by midnight and in the wee hours of tomorrow morning notice that front beginning to lift north ward. it will warm up tomorrow. we'll watch this cold front cross with a slug of very heavy rain and embedded downpours by the evening hours tomorrow evening. big changes coming on in. just a coating to an inch or two of snow across most of the area before that changeover freezing rain and eventually rain. you see what happens to the temperatures lt by tomorrow morning they're climbing up into the 40's and during the afternoon tomorrow, they are going into the 50's so much warmer air coming on in. strong winds out of the south could gust to 50 miles per hour closer to the coastline tomorrow evening and because of that we do have a high wind watch in effect. you get that snow to come in tonight changing to freezing rain and rain by morning. and tomorrow morning for the early part of the commute i think just a few scattered showers around.
