a short time ago the fire chief talked about how hard it was to fight this fire in these conditions. >> basically all of our equipment is frozen. the pipes are frozen. the ladder pipes were frozen. it was just a difficult time getting some water on it. frank: it's still inclear what caused this fire. officialtell us they're still here putting out hot spots. this is the third fire in worcester tonight. they said those freezing conditions made it especially hard to deal with. fortunately no injuries to firefighters while fighting these three fires in worcester. again the investigation continues into this fire and the other two fires. we'll continue to follow this story all morning long and bring you the latest. live in worcester, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now a deadly fire is under investigation in fall river. this was the scene on eastern avenue last night. the body of a man found on the third floor of a multi-family building. firefighters battled the flames and struggled with the frigid temperatures and frozen equipment.

not been released. right now three fires in one town are under investigation. really rough night for weymouth firefighters. in fact, they say they've never had to fight that many fires at once before. it started with flames ripping through a home on arnold street. a short time later two other fire calls hit the department. investigators say in at least two of the cases people were trying to stay warm and thaw frozen pipes. >> fuel from a wood fire stove that was left next to the house. again getting rid of embers from your fireplace is very important using a metal can. emily: at least a dozen nearby fire departments were called in to help. no one was hurt. >> just come back, buddy. just come back, please. randy: a father's plea after his right now boston police are him down. the eyeopener's doug meehan is

scalia is back home in virginia. but even as friends and family mourn, the controversy over what happens now is growing. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is tracking developments. erika: we're getting new information this morning about how scalia died. meantime, the white house appears to be pushing back against calls to put a hold on replacing him on the bench. republicans say the president should not nominate a successor in his final year in office. but abc news reports the president will likely nominate someone who has won the praise of the g.o.p. in the past. some names floating around-- merrick garland, the chief judge of the d.c. circuit court of appeals. jane kelly, confirmed unanimously by the senate as circuit court judge in 2013. and sri srinivasan, who served under the bush administration. no official autopsy was performed, but it is believed justice scalia died of natural causes, possibly a heart attack while he slept at a resort in west texas. he was 79 years old. randy: commitment 2016. a first on the campaign trail today.

around-- but the trade-off is clouds coming in. it's clear out there right now. we have sunshine through lunchtime. the clouds come in as we watch a warm front here to the south start to lift in our direction. there you see the clouds beginning to move in around lunchtime and then they're thick inning up this afternoon. by 7:00 tonight, notice there is some snow breaking out to the west. i expect snow to develop here between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. and the roads will become slippery very quickly because it's been so cold the past few days. just a little bit of snow is going to stick to the roads immediately. then overnight we're going to watch that snow change over to a mix and eventually all rain by tomorrow. you can see by 11:00 tonight we're snowing boston to worcester points north but already seeing that changeover to the south. i think it's a quick change to rain close er to the coastline but stubborn cold may linger through the merrimack valley and into northern worcester county through the wee hours of tomorrow morning before we start to warm those temperatures up. notice by tomorrow morning nothing more than a few showers for the morning commute. 1-2 inches in most spots. heaviest amounts once you get

it's enough to make things slipperily through the overnight as the warm front lifts up. we'll watch a strong southerly wind develop tomorrow afternoon. that is going to bring warmer temperatures on in. we could see gusts to 50 miles per hour by the time we get to tuesday evening. look what it does to the temperatures starting out near 30 this evening. by tomorrow morning we're in the low to mid 40's. we actually jump into the 50's around here tomorrow afternoon. temperatures. but again it does come in with that rain. although it's just a few showers early tomorrow morning, by lunchtime they're becoming a little pit more numerous. as we get into the afternoon and evening hours look at that band of heavier rain coming through boston. probably close to 8:00 tomorrow evening. that's the time when we could see the really strong winds coming on in. this is all getting out of here on wednesday but inch, inch-and-a-half of water coming in on top of the snow so big puddles developing here especially late tomorrow and then it does quiet down the rest of the week. snow the temperatures aren't so bad. olessa: even 30's will feel nice after what we went through.

b's lose, 6-5. randy: if you're just now getting up and wondering if it's any warmer this morning, it is not. cindy: i suppose it is. we were nine below zero yesterday morning in boston. it is six above zero right now. there's not a ton of wind out there. the winds generally under 10 miles per hour. wind chill is is not a big issue: two below beverly. three below lawrence. worcester you're two below zero. orange is 14 below right now. these are the temperatures not the wind chill. we just dropped another degree there. six below right now in plymouth. we do recover this afternoon though into the 20 toss around 30 degrees. this is going to happen very late in the day. our winds are turning around to the south. they're trying to bring up that warmer air but they're event ally going to bring in some snow. we have a winter weather advisory later this afternoon into tonight for a little bit of snow and then a changeover to sleet, freezing rain. you can see it's clear out there right now.

the tail end of the evening commute will likely feature some roads becoming snow-covered and a little bit slippery. we watch this warm front lift on north ward. that snow begins to change over to sleet and freezing rain by midnight and in the wee hours of tomorrow morning notice that front beginning to lift north ward. it will warm up tomorrow. we'll watch this cold front cross with a slug of very heavy rain and embedded downpours by the evening hours tomorrow evening. big changes coming on in. just a coating to an inch or two of snow across most of the area before that changeover freezing rain and eventually rain. you see what happens to the temperatures lt by tomorrow morning they're climbing up into the 40's and during the afternoon tomorrow, they are going into the 50's so much warmer air coming on in. strong winds out of the south could gust to 50 miles per hour closer to the coastline tomorrow evening and because of that we do have a high wind watch in effect. you get that snow to come in tonight changing to freezing rain and rain by morning. and tomorrow morning for the early part of the commute i think just a few scattered showers around.
