the two things making this monkey statue extra special, ahead in eyepoppers. good morning. i'm emily riemer. randy: that was president-- no, it wasn't one of the presidents. it is interesting. i'm randy price with cindy fitzgibbon. cindy: i thought i was delusional by the cold. i didn't know what that was. the good news is those winds won't be as strong. very little wind out there this morning. randy: your forecast for tomorrow is even better. cindy: wait until you see what's coming tomorrow. we have two degrees below zero right now in worcester. it is one below in beverly. we're below zero plymouth as well. boston is five above. as cold as 15 below this morning out in orange. so it is another cold morning but notice the winds at or below 10 miles per hour. so no brutal wind chills to pass along this morning. winds are going to turn around to the south this afternoon. look what happens to our temperatures. we sneak up into the teens here by noontime. and into the 20's this afternoon. sunshine this morning though going to fade behind increasing clouds.

morning but the clouds coming at us from the south and the west whistling along with this warm front. an area of snow breaking around d.c. this morning. that will be moving in here during the evening commute. we have a wirnt weather advisory up for that reason through early tomorrow morning. just a little burst of snow and then it changes over to some freezing rain, sleet and eventually all rain but it does get a little slippery out on the roads as we head into this evening and first half of tonight. sneaking of the roads let's get you out there now. they are dry. olessa: the roads are dry and quiet. the mbta wants to make sure that trains are running smoothly this morning. crews spent the day in charlestown preparing replacement rails. several rails broke from the cold today. temporary rails are in, and permanent rails will go in soon. the "t" says it will keep red and orange line trains underground in tunnels overnight to limit their exposure to the cold. of course if there are any problem s with the trains i'll keep you posted. for now we're in good shape. a live look outside. pike looks good by

as you make your way into town we're watching one disabled car. this is the ramp from everett avenue as you travel on the tobin bridge there southbound so keep that in mind. that is really the only thing that is going on right now. it's not bad at all. south of town you're looking at 24, 95 route 3 the expressway 10-15 braintree to boston. same on the pike. 15 minutes 495 to 128. 93 south looks good out of methuen all the way down to the leverett connector. trains and buses also running on schedule. randy. randy: thank you. breaking overnight. raging flames tear through an apartment building in worcester. just look at the dramatic video from the scene. and this was a brutal battle for firefighters. emily: the eyeopener's frank holland is live at the scene on preston street. frank: this three-alarm fiery rupted here at this triple decker here on preston street behind me. crews leaving the scene a short time ago. we have cell phone video of this raging fire from earlier. you can see flames bursting from the roof and the windows. one man was inside the building at the time of this fire.

firefighters say the sub zero temperatures made fighting this a real challenge. the deputy chiefs tell telling us the hydrants were not frozen but the lines and ladders were. >> basically all of our equipment is frozen. the pipes are frozen. the ladder pipes are frozen. it was just a difficult time getting some water on it. frank: this is the third fire in the city overnight. firefighters also battled a pair of two alarm fires. all these fires remain under investigation. live here in worcester, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. is under investigation in fall this was the scene on eastern avenue last night. third floor of a multi-family building. and struggled with the frigid temperatures and frozen equipment. the identity of the victim has not been released. right now three fires in one town are under investigation. those battles making for a really rough night for weymouth firefighters. in fact, they say they've never

once before. it started with flames ripping through a home on arnold street. a short time later two other fire calls hit the department. investigators say in at least two of the cases people were trying to stay warm and thaw frozen pipes. >> fuel from a wood fire stove that was left next to the house. again getting rid of embers from your fireplace is very important using a metal can. emily: at least a dozen nearby fire departments were called in to help. no one was hurt. >> just come back, buddy. just come back, please. randy: a father's plea after his son disappears. right now boston police are asking for your help in tracking him down. the eyeopener's doug meehan is live in boston, with the last place he was seen. doug? doug: right here at the bell and hand tavern. his family says the harvard man disappeared after a night out with family.

last seen just before 2:00 on saturday morning near the popular boston bar. he stepped outside to make a call, then messaged his cousins, saying he couldn't get back inside. when the bar emptied, marr was nowhere to be found. a fun night out gone wrong. >> it's not often that he's able to go into the city and have some fun with his cousins. you know, they were celebrating his birthday. doug: marr's dad says the disappearance is completely out of character. he says he just wants his son to return home, no questions asked. live in boston, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: right now the body of late supreme court justice antonin scalia is back home in virginia. but even as friends and family mourn, the controversy over what happens now is growing. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is tracking developments. erika: we're getting new information this morning about how scalia died. meantime, the white house

against calls to put a hold on replacing him on the bench. republicans say the president should not nominate a successor in his final year in office. but abc news reports the president will likely nominate someone who has won the praise of the g.o.p. in the past. some names floating around-- merrick garland, the chief judge of the d.c. circuit court of appeals. jane kelly, confirmed unanimously by the senate as circuit court judge in 2013. and sri srinivasan, who served under the bush administration. no official autopsy was performed, but it is believed justice scalia died of natural causes, possibly a heart attack while he slept at a resort in west texas. he was 79 years old. randy: commitment 2016. a first on the campaign trail today. former president george w. bush is joining the fray. bush will appear at a rally with his younger brother jeb bush today in south carolina. the former president won a bruising south carolina primary on his way to the oval office in 2000. he remains popular there.

sights set on nevada. she campaigned there this weekend and has three events scheduled there today. the democratic caucuses there are set for next weekend. clinton got some help on the campaign trail from civil rights icon and georgia congressman john lewis. bernie sanders heads to michigan today. he also spent the weekend trying to shore up support in the black community. he praised president obama during an appearance before an african american congregation in nevada. emily: this morning former boston mayor ray flynn is resting at his south boston home. he had surgery to implant a defibrillator. flynn underwent the operation after crashing his car into a neighbor's house last week. according to a family spokesman, doctors believe that flynn may have suffered a condition known as "aborted sudden cardiac arrest" before the crash. that irregular heart rhythm may have caused him to pass out behind the wheel. the coast guard will be holding a public hearing on the loss of the "el faro" this week. the first session of the public

focus on the condition of the ship before it sank in hurricane joaquin. this is separate from the ntsb investigation. two people from massachusetts were among the 33 who died when the ship sank in october. randy: right now a man is under arrest charged with assaulting a medical worker and threatening to "blow up" brockton hospital. 21-year-old saud alonize claims to be a saudi arabian national. police say he was at the hospital because he was hurt in an earlier fight. they also say he was drunk and demanded to talk to the saudi consulate. services will be held today for the teacher killed when a manhole cover smashed into her car. caitlin clavette was a beloved art teacher in milton. she was killed friday on i-93 south while driving to work. a wake is set for today in winchester with funeral services tomorrow. after her death, mass-dot did emergency inspections of more than 900 structures on the highway. workers say they found no threat

it is not messy out there now. it is gorgeous. skies are clear. look at this red sky over boston. the sun is up at 6:41 officially. temperature though just five degrees. the winds are light out of the southwest right now under ten miles an hour but we are sub zero. north shore up in beverly it is one below. south shore and plymouth down to six below zero. hyannis you're down to two below. out in worcester two below there. as cold as 15 degrees below zero right now out in orange. so you get the idea. it's still another cold start. but we recover this afternoon into the 20's to near 30 degrees by very late in the day. it's going to take a while for these temperatures to tick up. all the while the sunshine we have developing this morning is going to fade as clouds actually move in. by lunchtime we get into the evening hours see the snow that's down around the d.c. area right now. that's actually what is heading in our direction. first come the clouds. we start to notice them around lunchtime. they'll thicken up. by 7:00 this evening there will

i think it's between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. we start to see the snow develop across the area. the road surfaces are cold themselves. they'll become snow covered and slippery very quickly. overnight they'll see a change over to a mix and eventually some rain. still snowing boston to worcester points north. there's the rain taking over to the south. that's going to be lifting north ward as well. stubborn cold though may linger from southern new hampshire down to the merrimack valley and out into northern worcester county into the wee hours of tomorrow morning. everything is going to lighten up but it may be just cold enough out this way for a little bit of icing into the early part of tomorrow morning. that being said it's just a coating to an inch of snow across a lot of the area. 1-2 as you get outside of 128. before that change over to sleet and freezing rain. look what happens. we start this evening 20's to around 30 degrees. temperatures rise overnight. by 6:00 tomorrow morning, it's in the 40's out the door. yes, we're heading into the 50's by tomorrow afternoon as this warm front lifts north ward. warmer air floods on in.

no charges have been filed. the woman involved is expected to be okay. spitzer quit as governor over a 2008 hooker scandal. right now an explosive mystery is under investigation in new mexico. a rental car is returned rigged to explode. a mechanic found an explosive device attached to the car after it was returned to a facility near the albuquerque airport. the bomb squad disarmed the device and nobody was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out how it got there and if anyone was targeted. emily: your economy headlines now. asian markets were mostly higher today, led by a jump in japanese stocks. wall street is closed today in observance of presidents' day. that's after u.s. benchmarks ended higher friday. the dow closing at 15,973. whole foods is changing up its management style in an effort to curb costs. up until now, local managers have made decisions about which products to purchase and even how the stores are designed.

started. right now boston police are asking for help tracking down this missing man from harvard. 22-year-old zachary marr was last seen early saturday morning near the bell in hand tavern in boston. family members say he stepped outside to make a call. emily: right now the body of supreme court justice antonin scalia is back home in virginia. investigators say the 79-year-old died of natural causes at a texas ranch this weekend. despite pushback from republicans, president obama will nominate a successor. right now dozens of people are back on the ground after getting stuck on a tramway in the bitter cold. randy: the eye's erika tarantal is here with the rescueand the investigation. erika: the breakdown had skiers, snowboarders, and sightseers trapped for hours on new hampshire's cannon mountain. a mechanical issues brought the tramway to a screeching halt sunday afternoon, less than 100

48 people were on board including a family with an eight-month-old child. passengers knew immediately something was wrong. >> it swung hard. it swung back. we knew that there was a problem. erika: firefighters helped passengers rappel from the cars before taking them down the mountain on snow cats. no one was hurt. it's not clear when the tramway will reopen. randy? randy: battling back from a devastating injury. the hockey player hurt during the women's winter classic shows her true strength. teammates on the boston pride calling denna laing an inspiration on and off the ice. they took the regular season title yesterday afternoon in brighton with number 24 in the crowd. laing surprised teammates in the locker room before the game. she's facing an uphill battle after a severe spinal injury on new year's eve. but perseverance is something this disciplined athlete is familiar with. laing: when i get down a little bit, it could be worse. it could be worse.

in between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. during the evening commute there will be snow around. the road surfaces are so cold that it's going to stick very quickly and it's going to become very slippery pretty fast. it will turn to a mix and then eventually rain. you can see that happening as the warmer air invades before midnight in boston tovment the north and west this pink area here from the merrimack valley down to northern worcester county typically this cold is is stubborn and slow to dislodge. i think even in the wee hours of tomorrow morning maybe just cold enough for a little bit of icing out that way. in terms of the snow a coating to an inch. not a lot. just enough to make things slippery tonight. as those temperatures coming up tomorrow we're talking about 50's with a wind-swept soaking rain. we'll clear things out for you on wednesday. let's get you out to the roads right now. olessa: very quiet out there. not seeing anything out there this morning. a live look at the pike for you. this is by allston/brighton the screen. it is a vacation week.

light all week long. we'll keep you posted. no problems in boston and south 24, 95 route 3 all making the speed limit. so is your trip on expressway right now. 10-15 braintree to boston. eastbound on the pike your ride is only 15 minutes 495 out to 128. and then north of town much of the same. 93 south quiet through andover down toward wakefield and a delay-free ride to the leverett connector. trains and buses on schedule. randy: breaking overnight. a raging fire under investigation in worcester. emily: the eye's frank holland is live at the scene with the information in overnight. frank? frank: one man was able to escape this three-alarm fire unhurt. the flames broke out the triple decker here on preston street. crews on the scene spraying water on this building trying to get out the hot spots. fire officials tell us this is the third fire in the city overnight. taking a look at cell phone video of this raging fire. flames exploded out of the windows and the roof. he they also battled a pair of two-alarm fires. they say the sub zero

fires extremely difficult. the cause of all three of these fires under investigation. frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: one man is dead after a fire in fall river. the man was found on the top floor of this three-unit building on eastern avenue last night. firefighters say the cold weather made their response more challenging. one firefighter suffered minor injuries after slipping. the cause of that now under investigation. three fires in the same town are under investigation. it started with flames ripping through a home on arnold street in weymouth before two other calls came into the department. investigators say in at least trying to stay warm and thaw pipes. no one was hurt. for a missing man from the town of harvard continues. he was last seen here at the bell in hand early saturday morning, and now his family is really starting to worry.

sleep. randy: former boston mayor ray flynn is resting at his south boston home following surgery after a crash. doctors implanted a defibrillator after flynn passed out and crashed into his neighbor's home last week. according to a family spokesman, doctors believe flynn may have suffered a condition known as "aborted sudden cardiac arrest." emily: republican presidential candidates set their sights on south carolina, ahead of the primary there. donald trump, ted cruz, marco rubio, ben carson, and jeb bush, joined by brother george w. bush, will hold events today. john kasich will campaign in michigan. meantime, democrat hillary clinton will hold three events in nevada ahead of the caucuses there next weekend. rival bernie sanders will campaign in michigan after an event in nevada yesterday. randy: senator john mccain is looking to subpoena the 10 u.s. sailors held captive for one night in iran. the republican senator says the sailors should testify about their brief detention if the

provide any findings by march 1. the sailors were held on january 12 after two patrol boats strayed into iranian waters. they later blamed a navigational problem. emily: a startling report from the united nations. the number of civilian injuries in afghanistan's long war with the taliban rose last year-- the highest number since 2009. more than 3,500 civilians were killed and another 7,000 injured. the report found most of the dead or injured were caught in crossfire. randy: pope francis continues his historic trip to mexico. he will celebrate the country's indigenous population today, presiding over a mass in three native languages. yesterday, the pope held an outdoor mass in one of the most dangerous suburbs of mexico city. the pope has been speaking out against the drug trade during his five-day trip. emily: snowy weather in indiana is being blamed for a series of pile-ups sunday afternoon. fifty cars were involved in the crashes on interstate 65 about 30 miles northwest of indianapolis.

and sections of the highway had to be shut down so the road could be cleared. randy: the governor of michigan is looking for more medicaid coverage for people in flint amid a devastating water crisis. governor rick snyder is asking the federal government to expand the benefit to cover people under 21 and pregnant women. snyder says about 15,000 flint residents would benefit. tomorrow, the u.s. surgeon general plans to visit the city. emily: police in san francisco are investigating after two people were hit by blow darts while walking across the golden gate bridge. one man who'd been hit in the leg flagged down a highway patrol officer. a five-inch-long dart stuck in his leg. and as emergency workers were talking to that man, a woman approached and said she'd been hit in the knee. they're both going to be okay. randy: four people are in custody after a billion dollar drug bust in australia. police say the methylamphetamine was discovered in important boxes of silicon bra inserts and art supplies. it's the country's largest bust ever of the drug in liquid form.

if convicted. emily: a kentucky state lawmaker uses a new bill to make a point about women's healthcare. the state adopted a bill last week requiring women to see a doctor before they can have an abortion. a state rep. then filed a new bill that would require men to see a doctor before getting viagra or similar drugs. the democrat says men are not subjected to the same government interference as women in their medical decisions. randy: not what you'd expect in the aftermath of a raging fire. but in philadelphia this is what was left after a six-alarm fire at an auto-repair shop-- a frozen building. temperatures were so cold, the water from the firefight frosted over. policeosted these images the next day. emily: the nba showboats in its all-star game. isaiah thomas, the lone celtic on the court. he got 18 minutes last night in toronto, scoring nine points. 196-173 the final. and a standing ovation for kobe bryant.

a quick live look outside. i have to show you this. unbelievable sunrise this morning. cindy: gorgeous this morning, olessa. a golden glow in the sky. what a changeable day. we have sunshine to start clearly but snow to finish the day. winter weather advisory goes into effect at 3:00 this afternoon. we'll see a burst of snow this evening change over to sleet, freezing rain overnight and eventually all rain by tomorrow. big changes coming today. out the door right now though it is cold. still below zero in many areas. seven below in plymouth. 16 below zero. that's the temperature not the wind chill. worcester. it is five above currently in boston. we do recover this afternoon into the 20's to near 30 degrees late in the day. so a temperature recovery today. but we're watching this warm front down to the south. area. that is lifting in our direction. we'll see the clouds begin to today. and then by about 6:00 this out across the area. so during the evening commute, i would say between 4:00 and

because it's been so cold lately, i think the roads are going to become very slippery quickly with this system coming on in. and then overnight we're going rain. you can see that by 11:00 i think we flipped over to rain in boston. to the north and west there may be stubborn cold that lingers from the merrimack valley to northern worcester county. there could be prolonged freezing rain overnight tapering off early tomorrow morning with pockets of mist and drizzle. only an inch or two of snow across most of the area before that changeover. look at the temperatures climb overnight. by 6:00 tomorrow morning, it's in the mid 40's. we jump into the 50's tomorrow afternoon as this warm front watching the cold front off to the west. that's going to send a band of heavier downpours late in the day and during the evening. at that time there could be stronger damaging wind gusts over 50 miles per hour. we have a high wind watch to take you through the day tomorrow because the morning hours aren't all that wet. just showery weather through lunchtime. as we get into the afternoon look at the downpours moving in area. could be a rumble of thunder
