getting cold. upper 20's to near 30 on thursday. we do look dry here friday heading into the weekend. we'll break down the timeline right now as the "eyeopener" continues. >> now on newscenter 5's "eyeopener." emily: flooding forces hotel guests out into the cold. and the cause of that mess could hit homes and businesses across the commonwealth. randy: passengers trapped in an airport for hours after weather diverts their flight. the hold-up that had nothing to do with snow and rain. this is ground control to major tom emily: tributes and trophies for music's brightest stars. the big winners at the grammy awards on the eye for this tuesday morning. >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." randy: roads, parking lots, sidewalk, they are slick and danger out there in many spots

snow and rain. the radar is clearing out now, but that could all change by tonight's commute. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm randy price. emily: and i'm emily riemer. cindy, the upside is some warm temperatures on the way, right? cindy: we sure are. we're waiting for that thermometer to pick up and melt all the ice out there this morning. it's like a skating rink out there really. although you saw the radar quieting down, the damage is done. it will remain slippery with that icy glaze north and west of boston through about 9:00 this morning. until the temperatures come up above freezing mark. you can see south of boston right now, it is up to 50 degrees in plymouth. we're in the 40's on the cape but from boston to beverly we're at freezing. as you head to the north and west temperature s are in the 20's right now from bedford to lawrence. you can see up toward nashua as well. just a little bit of pink showing up. we have light freezing rainfalling with the temperature of 25 in keene, 27 in orange.

is already a surface of glaze out there due to the freezing rain from overnight. there still may be patchy freezing drizzle even though the steadier precipitation is lifting north ward. we're watching a storm down to the south. as this lifts north, it will flood much warmer air in. by this afternoon, yes, everybody is in the 50's but between now and about 9:00 we're going to watch for those patchy areas of icing out there. as we get toward the evening commute, the concern between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. is heavy rain. the potential for damaging winds. you can see that heavier rain pushing toward the worcester area at 4:00 p.m. and crossing in through boston by 7:00 this evening. heavy downpours, a rumble of thunder with this. there could even be damaging wind gusts to 60 miles per hour. so lots to watch weatherwise today but as we get you out to the roads this morning olessa can't stretch how careful you need to be out the door. olessa: two hands on the wheel especially secondary roadways and smaller streets even a lot of the majors. you can see right now it just

crews are working hard on get the roads under good condition for the morning commute. so far you're in pretty good shape. you want to take it slow out there. 93 south no major problems to report. it's mainly rain and the pike and route 9 getting by at a pretty good pace as well. you want to give wrowr self-that extra travel time. we're expecting the trains and the buses to start the morning on schedule. for more on roads we'll head out to doug meehan who is on the roads keeping an eye on them for us. good morning, doug. doug: good morning, olessa. we're on 128 northbound just kind of approaching the lynnfield stretch. and i can tell you that we're starting to see an increase in volume and a rise in temperature. it's starting to improve the road conditions. that is not, however, to say that they are optimal. that is not going to be a good ride out here this morning. one other note. it's all north of the mass pike at this point as we were really start to go see the trickier road conditions. the secondary roads, as you're

get to the main roads, those are going to be really tough. oh, by the way, clear the top of your vehicles. we're already seeing sheets of ice coming off the top of some of the cars and trucks out here. that's it from 128. i'm doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily, randy. randy: doug, thank you. right now crews are working to clean up the flooding that forced a popular newton hotel to evacuate. about 250 people removed from the crowne plaza for fear they might get stranded. emily: the eyeopener's sera congi is live in newton with what started all of this. sera: emily and randy, if you take the pike, you know this hotel well. this morning it is eerily in the dark as you can see. firefighters say a pipe burst in an electrical room last night dumping four feet of water onto the floor. they had to cut power to the entire hotel last night and evacuate 12 floors. people were initially taken to a ballroom then transported to

>> no word about the basement and it getting into the electrical and causing some problems. >> it's very frustrating because we've been here since 4:30 in the morning from chicago. we just want to get some rest and get some work done. sera: firefighters say the leak was repaired last night. they're still trying to get rid of all that water. no word on what time the crowne plaza will reopen. live in newton, sera congi, wcvb emily: right now they're dealing with a big mess in a revere neighborhood. a thick sheet of ice surrounding homes on arcadia street. the problem-- a tide gate installed several years ago. it's supposed to keep the ocean water out at high tide, but the sub-zero temperatures over the weekend caused the floodgate to freeze open. residents woke up sunday to their properties and street encased in ice and cars frozen for some families it means no access to their crawl space and everything inside.

underneath her home as well. >> at the moment i have no running water because the water has no way to drain through because everything is frozen underneath. emily: residents aren't sure how much damage will be revealed when all of the ice thaws out. right now passengers bound for new york are spending the night in manchester, new hampshire, after their flight had to make an unscheduled stop. the delta plane was headed from the dominican republic to j.f.k. last night. but it was diverted to manchester-boston regional because of weather. passengers had to wait for hours before leaving the airport for hotels because customs officials had to be brought in from portland, maine. they'll be put on another flight this morning. today's weather will be tricky. don't forget, you can take the latest stormteam 5 forecasts with you wherever go. just download the free wcvb mobile app for iphone and android. randy: right now three teenagers and a firefighter are in the hospital after an ice rescue in rhode island. the teens were skating on brickyard pond when they fell through. all three managed to get out of the water.

crews responded. they were all evaluated for hypothermia as a precaution. a massachusetts man is dead after a tragedy on the slopes. shirinian varter, of watertown, slammed into a tree yesterday. he was skiing with his family on burke mountain in vermont. state police say the 58-year-old lost control and went into the woods. he was not wearing a helmet. emily: today the state's fifth medical marijuana dispensary will open it's doors. patriot care will host a ribbon-cutting this morning on industrial avenue in lowell. the company plans to open facilities in greenfield and boston later this year. according to the state, there were more than 19,000 medical marijuana patients in massachusetts as of the end of january. somerville is suing over the proposed resort casino planned for neighboring everett. the city's mayor claims the steve wynn project ignored somerville's environmental and health concerns; namely, the congestion and exhaust caused by thousands of additional cars. a wynn spokesman called the lawsuit a purely political move

already being addressed. randy: new this morning, a malden police captain is going to court claiming the city blocked his efforts to investigate crimes involving city employees. that includes an alleged assault of a child at the ymca. captain john amirault, a 31-year-veteran of the force, says he was reassigned when he pushed the cases. a city spokeswoman denied the allegations but said the city hadn't seen the lawsuit yet. lawyers for bill cosby are expected back in a boston courtroom tomorrow. they're looking to set a trial date for the lawsuit over potential financial compensation to the women suing the comedian over rape claims. that trial could happen next february. cosby's insurance company issued him a policy in 2014 that protects against personal injury from defamation, libel, or slander. emily: commitment 2016. republican candidates are locked in a a southern brawl right now ahead of south carolina's primary. jeb bush looking for a boost to his poll numbers with a big-name

older brother george w. bush and his wife laura helped out on the campaign trail yesterday. never mentioning him by name, the former president took jabs at donald trump, saying the country needs a president with "humility." president bush: there seems to be a lot of name-calling going on, but i want to remind you what our good dad told me one time-- labels are for soup cans. trump: the worst attack ever in this country, it was during his presidency. emily: trump also making a couple of threats first about suing ted cruz because he was born in canada. then again hinting at a run as an independent, unhappy about being booed at this weekend's debate. the democrats prepare for their next early-voting state. the nevada caucus is also this weekend. hillary clinton campaigned there yesterday. she'll be in south carolina today. bernie sanders will also hold a town hall in south carolina today. he spent yesterday campaigning in michigan. the democrat primary there is

it is covered in ice. your windshield on your car may look like that as well. you're going to need some time this morning to navigate through this. through 9:00 this morning north and west of boston, winter weather advisories in effect for this icy glaze creating some hazardous travel. we also have fog right now. the visibility in worcester is a quarter mile. it is under a mile in beverly so lots of things going on this morning especially north and west of town. look south of boston. it's 50 degrees in plymouth right now. 40's on the cape. this warmer air is going to lift north ward for everyone here the deeper we get into the morning but right now you can see from boston up to beverly, we're at freezing. 20's from lawrence to bedford but we have radar overlaid on here. notice we're not finding additional freezing rain happening. sure, there might be a patch of freezing drizzle here and there but we're not looking at steady precipitation any longer. that is kind of shifting to the north right now. that will help the situation but the damage here is done from that glazing that occurred overnight after we got that little bit of snow. we are drying things out this

patches of drizzle here and there. but what we're waiting for is this. low pressure to the south is going to lift by to our west and drag in much warmer air so the temperatures will come up into the 50's this afternoon as the winds pick up as well. you're going to notice those wind speeds coming up over 20 miles per hour here late morning. they will be very gusty this afternoon and this evening, but it's pushing those temperatures up looking for a high close to 55 degrees in boston here by this afternoon. let's plan things out for the future. as as we go through the morning hours, patchy areas of drizzle. maybe a spot shower through lunchtime but the heavier rain, that comes in bad timing here during the evening commute, between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. at that time in addition to downpours there could be some damaging winds. and you can see that line shifting toward worcester by 4:00 this afternoon. and then right through greater boston by about 6:00 or 7:00 this evening. during this time downpours, there may be localized poor drainage flooding and also a rumble of thunder can't be ruled out.

this evening with clearing skies through the overnight. in terms of the rainfall it is about an inch, inch-and-a-half of rain in a lot of areas. those winds will be strong. could see gusts to 60 miles per hour especially along the coastline. some gusts over 40 miles per hour possible farther inland. we will drop back tonight down near the freezing mark. tomorrow is a much quieter day. we'll come up in the mid 40's in the afternoon. on thursday i have the threat for a couple of coastal snow showers. you can see them kind of dropping south ward here. that sunshine over the interior but those northerly winds and colder air moving over the water may create ocean-effect snow showers. not expecting much of any accumulation with this. something on thursday, otherwise, dryer and seasonable to end the week. there may be light rain or snow on saturday but it doesn't look like a big storm. olessa: (clapping) you need two hands on the wheel. i thought you were doing a brace yourself wherever you're going. here's a live look outside. route 1 in saugus southbound

the screen. you can see a little bit of shine on the road surface here. north of town and farther north of this camera shot we're seeing slippery conditions so you really want to be careful. heading over to the maps we're the ramp. also a crash on 128 in beverly. this accident on over by 114 on 128 southbound so there's an indication. entrance and exit ramps, secondary roadways parking lots will all be tricky this morning. eastbound on the pike so far you're doing okay. route 9 not seeing too many problems. the same south of town where we're seeing rain and the trains and buses are starting the morning on schedule. randy. randy: this could have been much worse. a garbage truck flies off interstate 95 and lands in a park. take a look. police in miami are trying to figure out how this happened. somehow the truck smashed through a guardrail on the elevated highway and plunged 100 feet just barely missing an apartment complex. the truck driver does have serious injuries, but he was the only person hurt. emily: your economy headlines this tuesday. u.s. markets are back open today after taking a break for

right now, stock futures are slightly higher. with no guidance from wall street being closed, asian markets rallied for a second day today. the lobster industry is sending less of its catch to canada as processing grows right here in new england. lobstermen have long sent a large amount of their catch to canada for processing, but that trend is slowing down with a booming lobster catch. more local processing plants are allowing fishermen to sell the lobsters, which could mean products may become more affordable. you've heard it before. it's never too early to start thinking about retirement. and experts say there are some important moves that can really help grow that nest egg. first, step up the pace. you should aim to contribute at least 10% more if you got a late start. second, review the fees. since 2012, employers have been required to spell out 401-k fees so there's no reason not to be aware of how big a bite they're taking out of your savings. and finally, get back on track. if you're in your 40's, you might have slowed contributions because of college bills or other spending.

cindy: a lot of you may be up getting ready to head out the door this morning. just a heads-up. we had snow overnight and sleet and freezing rain. it has created an icy glaze out there this morning. for that reason, a winter weather advisory is up north and west of town until 9:00 this morning. temperatures south of boston well up into the 40's, even 50 degrees but from boston north and west, it's going to take a while to push those temperatures up. we are heading into the 50's this afternoon. we transition from that icing concern this morning to heavy rain and strong wind potential for the evening commute.

around the state. sera: the mess at this hotel and the warning from local plumbers about your home today. randy: and new overnight. an abrupt end to a delta flight strands passengers in new england. why they couldn't get to their destination. on the eye. >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." randy: 5:30 on this tuesday morning. we're looking at route 1 in saugus. things have been quite slow out there especially to the north. ice slowing down some drivers although you might be wondering what we're talking about. a lot of the area affected by the ice and the conditions on the roads. good morning to you. i'm randy price. emily: and i'm emily riemer along with cindy and olessa. the message this morning is take it slow as you're heading out, right, guys. olessa: be careful. cindy: it depends on where you are. north and west of boston this morning is where we have the trouble because we did have that snow overnight. then a period of freezing rain

everything this morning. until the temperatures warm up over the freezing mark, we're going to deal with the slippery conditions. until 9:00 this morning you need to be on guard. we are sitting at the freezing mark right now in boston and beverly. but north and west of there, notice all the 20's. also notice south of boston, yeah, it is 50 degrees right now in plymouth with lots of 40's down through the south shore and the cape this morning. so big changes in temperature wherever you are. notice from lawrence to bedford we've got the 20's back to fitchburg, nashua, orange as well. in these areas we're not seeing additional freezing rainfalling at this point. there might be patches of freezing drizzle, but we are starting to dry things out this morning. really the damage is done. things will change in a big way this afternoon as this low lifts north and westward. it's going to flood warmer air on in so we jump into the 50's everywhere this afternoon. we're going to be watching for heavier rain. that is not a possibility here through noontime. nothing more than drizzle or a spot shower. but by 4:00 this afternoon, here comes a band of very heavy

thunder. all the while the winds are going to be whipping up as well. timing on this is during the evening commute. it should be shifting off shore by about 9:00 this evening. the potential is there for wind gusts possibly to 60 miles per hour. so it will get pretty wild here with those downpours this evening. let's get you out to the roads right now. it is all about the icing concern out the door this morning. olessa: absolutely. you want to be careful. take it slow no matter where you're heading. the southbound side everyone going slow. the northbound side in crews are out treating those roadways. just budget in that extra travel time. let's go to the maps and see what else is going on. as you travel north of town watching a few early morning accidents 128 south at route 62 there is a crash there. and that's taking out one lane. there's also an incident here if you're traveling 114 trying to get on to 128. there's a spinout there on the ramp on the southbound side. so an indication of how tricky the roads are. as as you travel 93 south not too bad. the pike looks okay in this dress. but out of worcester another accident coming in eastbound by

crowne plaza hotel here in the dark. last night they had to evacuate everyone because of flooding. and plumbers are expecting even more problems today with temperatures on thize. many homeowners have experienced freezing wipes without water and heat. the pipes most susceptible are those without insulation and close to cold exterior walls. when those pipes freeze, they expand and split but you wouldn't know it until they thaw. plumbers say there are some steps you can take to protect your home. >> the first thing you should know is where the water main shut-off is. always know where that is so you can shut it off in an emergency. you see the water flowing, run for that first thing. shut off your heat. call the plumber. sera: lovett says if you have frozen pipes and have to leave the house, shut the water main off. that way, you can help prevent serious damage. live in newton this morning,

randy: right now there is a lot of cleaning to do at this school in waltham. a faulty sprinkler caused water to leak through stanley elementary school yesterday. the water spread through the hallways, the stairwell, even out the front door. the good news-- students are on vacation this week so there's plenty of time for repair before emily: other stories we're following right now on the eye. passengers bound for new york are spending the night in manchester, new hampshire. the delta plane was headed from the dominican republic to j.f.k. last night. but it was diverted to manchester-boston regional because of weather. randy: a massachusetts man is dead after hitting a tree while skiing in vermont. shirinian varter of watertown was with his family at burke mountain yesterday. lost control and was not wearing a helmet. emily: funeral services are today for the milton teacher killed in a freak crash on i-93 last week. hundreds waited in line in winchester last night during a wake for caitlin clavette.

crashed through her windshield on friday. randy: new this morning. more than 100 boston municipal employees are driving city-owned vehicles in suburbs around the state according to a new report. "the globe" survey found 106 workers drive those cars to 52 suburbs with taxpayers paying for gas and maintenance. on average, those employees with cars were paid salaries of $190,000 in 2015. emily: paying it forward. a local woman helping a total stranger and setting off a chain of good deeds. sofia andrade won $200 on a scratch ticket. she was at a stop sign in new bedford when she spotted glen williams who has been homeless for three years. when she found out all the local shelters were full, she spent the lottery winnings on a motel room for him. williams is overwhelmed by the

a rhode island mother is giving after she got the surprise of a lifetime in her living room. little cameron bren wasn't due for another ten days. but at 3:00 yesterday morning while mom was trying to get comfortable on a living room recliner, cameron decided it was time. without much warning, heather bren delivered her baby on her own on the second push. >> the only thing i could think of is i hope he's going to be okay. as soon as he came out, he cried. i put him right on my chest, wrapped him in my sweat shirt. he snuggled right in to me. emily: dad was sleeping upstairs the whole time. mom and baby were rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. everyone is healthy and happy. randy: keeping a close eye on the roads this morning. dough meehan coming back with an update from behind he wheel. and eating less might start with making a change in your kitchen. some incentive to tidy up, ahead. plus a special birthday celebration for the boy with some fist-bump finesse.

it looks like we have more snow headed our way. cindy: we do. it's a mess out there. the evening commute will have a whole different type of trouble. heavy rain, gusty winds. can't rule out thunder. likely going to be poor drainage. emily: thunder in winter. cindy: until 9:00 this morning north and west of boston watch out for the icy glaze making things very slippery. look at the difference in temperatures. 50's south of boston. 52 plymouth. 52 marshfield. taunton 52 degrees. you jump up to boss tofnlt it's 32. 20's up into southern new hampshire and back into worcester county as well. it will take a while this morning. through about 8:00 or 9:00 we're going to hover close to freezing. we jump up into the 40's to near 50 by noontime. we're in the 50's this afternoon. that's where everybody is headed today, into the 50's so this icing concern really just with us this morning. afternoon. we're going to get melting in. you can see on the radar right now, the widespread areas of freezing rain have lifted to our

just drizzle here and there. here is the storm. as it lifts north strong southerly winds will bring up more warmth. noontime, nothing more than a spot shower. so the icing concern will ease after 9:00 this morning. but then we focus on a band of heavy rain that comes through 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with damaging wind potential as well. you can see that band shifting toward the worcester area at 4:00 this afternoon. and then bad timing for the evening commute. it is moving through greater boston through 7:00 this evening. within this line rumbles of thunder not out of the question. very heavy downpours. all of it exiting through about 9:00 p.m. the potential is there for an inch, inch-and-a-half of water out of this. flooding, poor drainage areas a concern with ponding of water as well. notice those winds gusting potentially over 60 miles per hour right along the coastline. tomorrow we dry it out. still mild in the 40's, turning colder. upper 20's on thursday. let's get you out there this morning watching icing north and west of the city. olessa: absolutely. a few problem spots because of that icing. first a look look outside route 1 in saugus.

bottom of the screen. i just saw crews go through this stretch clearing the roadways. let's see the rest of your ride. north of town an accident just cleared away in beverly. that accident had a lane block od 128. another accident from 114 the entrance ramp on to 128 just cleared as well but there you go. the entrance and exit ramps will be tricky. 9 south not too bad. we're still watching a crash eastbound on the pike. this is by route 146 out of worcester. as you travel south of sown so far you're in pretty good shape. the roads mainly wet. trains and buses for now running on schedule. for more on the roadways we'll head out to doug meehan. good morning, doug. doug: north of the city really the sloppiest conditions. we're on 495 right now southbound. we just got off 95. this is really the worst conditions we've seen in a while. 128 was a little better. not quite as icy. but the on-and-off ramps are

the sanders and salters are out here doing their best. as those temperatures continue to rise, we're seeing a lot more melting happening out on the roadway. as that happens, we're starting to see a lot more water out on the roadways as well. so that could hamper the commute quite a bit as well. we're live on 495 approaching haverill this morning. doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily, randy, back to you guys. randy: doug, thank you. a hotel evacuated in newton. emily: the eye's sera congi is live outside the crowne plaza with the flooding clean-up this morning. sera: emily and randy, if you take the mass pike, you know this hotel well. this morning you'll notice it is in the dark. power was shut off after a pipe burst last night which flooded the electrical room in basement with four feet of water. all 12 floors were evacuated. about 250 people had to leave. at first they were sent to the ball room but then they had to be transported to other hotels. firefighters say the leak has been repaired.

with all of that water so it's unclear at this point when the hotel will reopen. live in newton this morning, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: it was an unexpected night in new hampshire for a plane full of passengers diverted away from new york's j.f.k. airport. the delta flight from the dominican republic had to change course last night. a delta spokesperson confirming j.f.k. was dealing with landing problems all day monday due to weather and manchester was the fastest solution. after a long wait on the plane and then in the airport, the airline ultimately put the passengers up in hotels. they take off for new york this morning. emily: erika, thank you. today the state's fifth medical marijuana dispensary will open its doors. patriot care will host a ribbon-cutting this morning on industrial avenue in lowell. the company plans to open facilities in greenfield and boston later this year. according to the state, there were more than 19,000 medical marijuana patients in massachusetts as of the end of january. randy: a shrewsbury firefighter accused of inappropriately touching his children's

in court today. according to court papers, the alleged assault happened in the firefighter's auburn home. sean bohdiewicz will be arraigned in worcester district court. emily: a new hampshire high school is boosting security after threats to a school tradition. sanborn regional high school will have extra police officers at friday's pep rally. the superintendent says a student made threatening comments to some of his friends. police say the extra presence is just a precaution. randy: friends and family are still searching for a missing harvard student after he walked out of a popular bar and vanished. zachary marr was celebrating his 22nd birthday at the bell in hand tavern. his relatives and friends have hung up signs throughout boston hoping someone will recognize zach. surveillance video shows him heading towards the surface

night. emily: a planned parenthood clinic in colorado has reopened nearly three months after a deadly shooting attack. robert lewis dear is charged with murder after three people were killed and nine others injured on november 27. yesterday, part of the building was opened to the public. repairs are still underway in the remainder of the building. randy: a series of deadly airstrikes on two hospitals and a school in syria are now being blamed on russia. at least 50 people were killed, and dozens more wounded, in yesterday's attack north of aleppo. the raids come just days after russia and other world powers agreed on a ceasefire to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid. emily: pope francis continues his five-day trip in mexico. today, he'll head into the heart of the drug-trafficking industry to meet with young people on the drug-trade and gang violence. yesterday, the pontiff celebrated mass in three native languages. while there, he invited a child bound to a wheelchair up onto the platform and blessed the boy. randy: new concerns about widely-used heartburn drugs. they may increase your risk of

temperatures are allowing for those icy conditions this morning especially north and west of boston. but look to the south. it's close to 50 degrees down around the plymouth area this morning and all that warmth is lifting north ward as low pressure rises to our north here off to the west. it's going to drag out those warmer temperatures for everyone today. in boston i think we're up around 50 here by lunchtime. and then in the 50's this afternoon. even north and west of town where it is icy this morning. so a little bit of an icing concern here for the next few hours. i think that lifts here through about 8:00 or 9:00 this morning and then the focus becomes some heavy rain. 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at that time damaging winds are a concern as well. you can see this heavy line of downpours approaching the worcester area by 4:00 this afternoon. and then during the evening commute, it is moving through greater boston with a rumble of thunder possible. everything off shore by 9:00 this evening. as that heavy line of storms is coming on through, there could be wind gusts close to 60 miles per hour so it is a wind and rain. that is the concern this
